This publication presents abstracts of articles and investigations pertaining to the utilization of fly ash. The terms "fly ash" and "flue. ash," as' used in most of the papers, refer to the ash from pulverized-coal firing collected by electrostatic precipitators or mechanical collectors. Several investigators do not define the material on which they report beyond calling it fly ash, but they probably refer to the fine material resulting from burning pulverized coal. A few of the papers report on investigations involving not only the use of fly ash but boiler slag as well. These can be identified by the title of the articles. Bibliographical information and the abstracts are arranged according to the date the papers were published, with the most recent listed first. With the continually increasing use of pulverized-coal firing, profitable disposal of the fly ash is becoming a problem of greater importance to many utility and industrial companies. Also, in recent years, the public demand for cleaner air, and the more highly efficient fly-ash collectors available have resulted in the collection of a greater percentage of the fly ash produced. The solution to better utilization of fly ash has, therefore, been the object of research for some years.

With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

"The present world-wide demand for increased production in all branches of essential industry involves a matter of vital concern t persons engaged in the mining industry, namely, the productive capacity of the individual mine employee. This applies particularly to coal-mining, upon which other industries so largely depend.The folded and faulted condition of the coal beds in some countries, as well as the thinness and depth of the seams, the adaptability to the beds of available mining machines and equipment are factors which cannot be overlooked in determining what increase in individual output may be looked for in any given country. This subject, while of fundamental importance, can only be referred to in a paper of this length, the primary object here being merely to present a comparative tatamant of individual output under prevailing conditions.The quantity of coal produced by a miner does not accurately indicate the miner's capacity as a workman, not only because of the natural conditions referred to above that limit his annual output, but also because of human factors which may possibly, however, be controlled, such as the demand for coal, the car supply, use of labor-saving machinery, number of days worked during the year, accidents in the mine, etc. It will, however, be an aid in answering the important question as to how and where the immediate need for coal throughout the world may best be surlier, if we examine the output of the miners in the important coal-producing countries over a period of years.Complete official information for recent years is, for several countries, jacking, particularly for France, Austria, and Prussia, but partial data from unofficial sources may be used to show the individual output of the miners in these countries."

This report summarizes the work performed on Bureau of Mines Contract J0199106, "Portable Trailing Cables, Splices, and Couplers - Design and Installation Considerations," from May 1, 1979 until December 31, 1981. Splice installations and considerations for the possible use of conductive-rubber shielding in low-voltage trailing cables as well as coupler installations in high-voltage cables were the principal tasks. Flammability measurements on cable components and general testing facilities for mine electrical equipment were secondary tasks. Theoretical and empirical data indicate that conductive rubber with high resistivity values is an unsatisfactory shield design for current-sensing fault detection. Elimination of partial discharge in coupler installations requires meticulous care.

This document contains most of the materials needed to use the exercise. The main part of the document is the instructor's copy. It tells how to use the exercise, presents the objectives, the master answer sheet, the scoring key, and discussion notes to be used following the exercise. The next section summarizes results from field tests of the exercise, and reports the miners' evaluation of the activity. The last part of this document is three appendices. Appendix A is the exercise problem booklet. This booklet can be duplicated locally. The booklets are reusable. One is needed for every person in the classroom. Appendix B is the answer sheet. The section has been driven about 4,000 feet from 4 West Mains. One of the shuttle car operators took a call from the fireboss saying that there was smoke from an unknown source coming into your section. You attempt to contact someone to find out where the smoke is coming from but get no response. You assemble the crew and start riding out of the section on the mantrip when you encounter heavy smoke. At this point, you decide to take your crew and travel on foot in the belt entry that is on a neutral split of air. After traveling about 6 crosscuts in the belt entry, you encounter heavy smoke at which time you and your crew don your person-wearable SCSRs (PWSCSR). After donning the apparatus, you and your crew continue traveling outby in the belt entry. Near the mouth of the section, one miner in the group starts to have trouble breathing from his SCSR. Because breathing resistance is increasing with the length of time the apparatus is worn, the miner is "outbreathing" the device since his oxygen requirements are greater that what the PWSCSR can supply. Studies were made in the Bureau of Mines Experimental coal mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a few extinguishing agents and techniques for controlling a fire on a simulated mining machine. The investigation showed that water containing an alkali-metal salt or a surface-active (wetting) agent was more effective than water alone. For close attack, fog applications was the most effective technique studied; high rates of agent application controlled the fire more quickly than low rates. The ability to control the fire increased as the distance of attack decreased. Dry powders controlled the fire when applied by shovel but not when applied airborne by rock-dust distributor or by hand fire extinguishers. Dry alkali-metal salt powders (potassium and sodium bicarbonates and sodium tetraborate) quenched the fire more readily than limestone dust. In each instance the finer powder, the greater its effectiveness. In an open ventilated entry, smoke and hot gases backed against the air currents. An airspeed of 230 feet per minute was required to permit approach to within 10 feet of the fire. At lower airspeeds, approach could be made by extending the brattice across the bottom two-thirds of the entry, by pushing the smoke ahead with water sprays, or by discharging dust from a rock-dust distributor. In a dead-end entry, the fire was approached to within 30 feet by coursing fresh air along an airtight line brattice; however, it was safer, easier, and less time-consuming to attack the fire from a fresh-air base 100 feet away with a solid stream or by high-expansion foam; the latter method was more effective.

"Previous investigations, too numerous to be listed in entirety, have been performed to determine the physical properties of rock. When considered according to their objectives, most of these investigations can be grouped as follows: First, the geologic group (1,2),4/ in which the purpose was to obtain information on the physical properties of the rocks that make up the earth's crust. Particular emphasis has been placed on the determination of the elastic constants--that is, Young's modulus, the modules of rigidity, and Poisson's ratio – as these quantities determine the propagation characteristics of seismic waves. Second, the structural properties group (3 - 11), in which the physical properties of architectural or monumental stone, concrete and aggregate rock, road blocks (cobblestone), and the like were desired. The tests have been quite general and include, besides the elastic properties; the compressive and tensile strength, and the toughness, hardness, and weathering properties of many types of rocks.To .a lesser degree, investigations have been carried out to determine the physical properties of mine rock. A few reports (12 - 14) present data on the crushability and grindability of mine rock, and a large number of papers discuss grinding and crushing procedures and methods of analyzing the data (for example, see references 15 - 17). Some of the latter group also have given the results of tests on mine rock; however, comparatively few include an adequate petrographic description or information on other physical properties of the rock. A few papers,(18 - 22) have reported studies of the strength of rock specimens in respect to the strength of parts of mine structures, such as pillars, roof, arches, etc. Other papers (23 - 26) have discussed investigations on such subjects as primary and secondary crushing, diamond and pneumatic rock drilling, explosive breaking and shattering of rock, rate of drifting and miring, and other allied problems. The majority of these reports have given no more than a cursory, description of the rocks and have included no statement regarding the physical properties. When statements have been given regarding the physical properties, they have usually referred only to isolated tests, making correlations between variations in the physical properties and variations in the .test under consideration difficult, if not impossible. Some reports have included handbook values on such characteristics as the crushing strength, hardness, and toughness. This practice is not satisfactory, because these values are usually given for col¬lective types of rocks, such as granites, limestones, and marbles, and it is known that the variations of the physical properties within these groups is often larger than the differences between the groups."

It is outlined more definitely by geologists however, as that area underlain by the south half of the Permian Salt Basin4/ and includes Scurry, Mitchell, Sterling, Howard, Glasscock, Reagan, Crockett, Upton, Midland, Martin, Gaines, Andrews, rotor, Crane, Pecos, Ward, Winkler, and Loving Counties in Texas, and.. Lea and Eddy Counties in New Mexico. The oil fields of the area, of which more than 70 have been discovered, are shown in fire 1. Approximately 4,200 producing oil wells have been drilled in these fields. Oil has been produced from limestones and dolomites of Permian age in most of the fields in the West Texas Permian Basin. Some of the fields produced oil from sandstone beds above the limestone, and in two fields production has been found below the limestone in formations of Ordovician age.

1. The Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning beds are the most important beds in Clearfield County, Pa., from the standpoint of production. The Lower Kittanning bed has the largest remaining recoverable reserves of any of the beds in the county. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,909 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 1,177 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Roof-rock instability in advancing sections of underground coal mines is a major contributing factor to accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries. Such roof-rock conditions can also result in loss of production due to additional cleanup time and increased amounts of reject material. The Bureau of Mines is investigating fundamental geologic factors affecting coal mine roof-rock instability in order to develop techniques to predict zones of potential unstable roof-rock. Two distinct directional trends of unstable shale roof-rock in a mine working the Upper Kittanning Coalbed are delineated: one trend is associated with the sandstone-shale transition zone, the other with a fault system. The unstable shale roof-rock associated with the transition zone, a consequence of differential compaction, is comprised of slickensided roof-rock. Whereas, the unstable shale roof-rock associated with the fault system, a consequence of structural deformation of the strata, is comprised of fault planes. These faults, small in comparison to the sandstone-shale transition zone, are difficult to delineate with a standard drilling program. Trends of the transition zone associated with the sedimentary facies change are projected into unmined portions of the coalbed with the aid of exploration core data.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. The XVIth International Conference on Coal Mine Safety Research was divided into eight half-day technical sessions. In accord with the established practice of these conferences, at each session, presentation of the papers was followed by a discussion period. Questions and comments submitted in writing to the session chairman were answered or discussed by the authors of the relevant papers or by their representatives. These discussions were tape-recorded in the original language of the speaker and subsequently translated into English when necessary. Questions to which no answer was available at the time and a few comments that exceeded the scope of the session have been omitted.

At the Sinclair Study Site it was found that the deeper the soil the greater the yield of corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and timothy. Yields at this location were generally lower than those at the Alston Surface Mine. At Alston the non-prime land treatments generally produced greater yields for all crops than did the prime farmland treatments, however, the intermediate soil thickness, 20 cm topsoil over 40 cm of subsoil, gave the best yields, provided it's subsoil had been limed. From a chemical point of view, acidic spoils do not need to be buried by 120 cm or 4 feet of soil, provided adequate lime is applied to these spoils as a barrier prior to placement of good quality topsoil and only forage crops are to be grown. The burial depth must be increased to as much as 75 cm when grain crops such as corn or soybeans are to be grown. This response to burial depth appears to be related to water storage needed by the crop and not due to toxic effects of the spoils. A conventional farm tractor-mounted subsoiler increased yields of soybeans and corn the first one or two years, but the effect was diminished with time. Subsoiling did not produce significant increases for alfalfa or wheat. However, ripping with a bulldozer produced significant yield responses, especially for corn and soybeans, that have lasted for at least three years. The ripping effectively reduced the bulk density at least within the zones through which the ripper had passed. Liming the upper 20 cm of subsoil significantly increased yields of alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. There also appeared to be an interaction between this lime treatment and soil depth. Yields of some grain and forage crops may be high enough to meet target levels for bond release for prime farmland. Based on the present study, one should not expect corn yields to be high enough to meet bond release. This statement should not be considered final since the experiment is not complete.

A pilot-scale treatment study was conducted on a copper-zinc bearing metal mine drainage using a pipeline treatment system called the In-Line System (ILS). The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to determine whether the ILS could be extended from the treatment of coal mine drainages to the treatment of metal mine drainages. Hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), quick lime (CaO), and caustic soda (NaOH) were used to neutralize the drainage. A novel reagent slurry of Ca(OH)2 and type C fly ash was also evaluated. Except for Ca(OH)2-fly ash slurry, treatment performance was evaluated for all reagents at pH values of 7,8,9, and 10. The Ca(OH)2-fly ash slurry was evaluated at a pH of 10. All reagents tested neutralized the metal mine drainage and substantially reduced the dissolved metal concentrations. It was concluded that the ILS could be useful in the treatment of metal mine drainages.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for removing dragline bucket wire rope terminations with the objective of finding efficient methods that are safer than the method most commonly used at U.S. surface mines, which is to use the explosive impact of a projectile fired from a cannon to remove the rope termination. Removal of a wire rope termination for repair or replacement requires separation of the wedge and socket that lock together to secure the rope end. The Bureau investigated currently used methods and improved upon and tested two safer alternate methods for removing wire rope terminations. A cannon test program was conducted, using 40-and 50-gr primer (detonating) cord, to establish the possible force produced with a 4-in-bore cannon and a 55-lb projectile. Wedge and socket units supplied from cooperating mines were separated under controlled conditions to establish data on separation force requirements. The two alternate methods investigated were use of the force generated by (1) a pendulum ram and by (2) a portable hydraulic pusher. Both methods are capable of providing sufficient force to effect wedge and socket separations on draglines with up to 78-yd3 buckets under normal conditions.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just inby the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized pro-gram, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.

The purpose of the work reported herein was to investigate whether available telephone multiplexing equipment offered a means to rapidly upgrade the traffic-handling capacity of present mine telephone systems and provide for selective calling for safer and more efficient mine operation. Common sense was used to decide whether or not an item could be termed "available." Since conventional telephone gear is not designed to interface pager phones for example, existing shelf items would require adapters to compatibly interface these two types of gear for independent operation over the present single twisted pair used in mines. These and similar small items were allowed, but if a system required any extensive design work to adapt it for the mines, we ruled it "not available."

This Bureau of Mines publication identifies areas having sufficient coal reserves to support synthetic natural gas (SNG) development and summarizes those areas having the highest potential. Capital requirements, mining and coal cost factors, water availability, and coal-quality data pertinent to SNG production are presented. Evaluation of individual coal reserve blocks was based upon coal and water requirements of the Bureau of Mines Synthane coal gasification process.

This report discusses fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety from three different directions. First, results of a survey prepared for the Fire Resistant Hydraulics Journal by the staff of the Fluid Power Research Center are analyzed. Second, operational limitations of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids are examined. Finally, laws and standards of various foreign countries are investigated. Three conclusions are derived from a close study of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety from these three directions. First, a significant number of experts in the fluid power industry are no in agreement about aspects of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid fire-resistance and toxicity. This indicates a need for more in depth research. Second, the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids involves a compromise between the decreased fire hazards and increased toxicity and machine incompatibility problems. Finlly, major foreign governmental agencies have thorough laws and standards concerning fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. These laws and standards may provide a solid framework for further international research into fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety.
