Hydraulic transport has been considered as one of the most economical methods in transferring granular materials over relatively long distances. In the natural world, it is used to transport basic material required for the support of life; in industry, it is a method widely adopted for handling materials. But the phenomena of hydraulic transport has not yet been thoroughly understood. As most of them are conditioned by a number of hydraulic and mechanical parameters, of which the basic relationships are not fully known, the traditional approach in relating these parameters to the energy requirement is purely empirical in nature. Empirical formulas, such as that proposed by Durand, (1) only give satisfactory results over a selected range of (particle size)/(pipe diameter) ratios and slurry concentration. When the case is more complicated or when new situations arise, the empirical formulas fail to give good predictory results. In fact, most of these formulas are based upon dimensional analysis, where the underlying physical interaction is not explicitly considered. Apart from the loosely related, non-dimensional groups incorporated in the formulas, there is practically no analytical means for modifying the formula so as to enable it to cope with more complex real physical situations. Although it seems quite remote that a complete rigorous solution to this highly complex problem could be generated in the near future, it is generally recognized (2, 3) that research in this area should be directed to more comprehensive studies of the obscure phenomena. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a continuous mining machine during the maneuvers required at the face area of a mine. The system consists of commercially available angular position sensors and a computer interface developed and tested at the Bureau. The sensors employed are laser-based scanning devices that report the angular location of retroreflective targets within their 90° field-of-view. The targets are mounted on the continuous mining machine; the laser scanners are mounted on an external reference structure. The computer interface consists of a single-board computer-controller programmed to gather and process the angular position information, and to calculate the machine's position and heading relative to the reference structure. A sensor fusion algorithm will be incorporated into the computer interface programming to increase the accuracy and reliability of the system.

This report summarizes the incidents that preceded the December 9, 1970, propane-air explosion in Port Hudson, Mo., and then attempts to establish the nature of the explosion from the ensuing events. Special emphasis is given to possible ignition sources, the distribution of flammable vapors, and the analysis of blast damage. Both near-and far-field damage indicated that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating TNT.

This is the final report for U.S. Bureau of Mines contract HO-122122, which was in effect from June 30, 1972 through January 4, 1976. The work resulted in the design and construction of a large laboratory scale coal dust burner and the use of this burner to study gaseous and coal dust flammability. A new technique for determining gas phase flammability was developed and the effect of solid and gaseous suppressants on the propagation of coal dust flames was studied. In addition, a technique for measuring the C/H ratio in the flame was developed and the C/H ratio that was measured in a coal dust flame on this burner showed that the burning process was preceeded by pyroysis of the coal dust. Both experimental and theoretical studies showed that radiative trans-port is very important to the propagation of a coal dust flame.

"SUMMARYMagnetic and gravimetric surveys wore conducted over an area of ap¬proximately 1,400 square miles in the bauxite district of central Arkansas. The primary purpose of these surveys was to discover any possible buried and hitherto unknown syenite masses favorable for the occurrence of bauxite and to determine the approximate position of the buried flanks of the known syenite masses which might offer conditions favorable for the discovery of new ore bodies.Those surveys indicated that the various syenite outcrops were domes or bosses on a large batholith and that ether similar domes occurred on the batholith but did net outcrop.Drilling on the local geophysical anomalies proved the presence of 10 buried domes, but only 2 of them were found to project above the upper surface of the Midway clays, a requisite of conditions favorable for the occurrence of bauxite ore bodies. The geophysical data indicated the approximate configuration of the buried flanks of the known syenite coutcrops, and the portions of these flanks that project above the Midway have now been outlined more accurately by drilling.The geophysical surveys have produced evidence permitting the elimi¬nation of a large area as unfavorable for the occurrence of bauxite.Magnetic surveys extending along the Midway-Wilcox contact from Gurdon, in Clark County, on the southwest to Searcy, in White County, on the northwest have proved the improbability of the existence of other syenite masses similar to those found in Pulaski and Saline Counties. A detailed magnetic survey of the Magnet Cove area in Hot Spring County has proved that the syenite mass exposed in that locality is an isolated intrusion and entirely unrelated to those of Pulaski and Saline Counties. This syenite mass does not occur under conditions believed to be favorable for the occurrence of bauxite."

In a previous report,6 results were given that showed the amount of natural ventilation in a manhole having a capacity of 74.l cubic feet when the number of ventilation openings in the cover was varied. from no openings to a maximum of 48. The results showed that the ventilation (air changes per day) in the manhole was proportional to the area of the openings in the cover, and also that the number or area of the openings was the factor that chiefly affected the ventilation.

One of a series published by the Bureau of Mines covering research investigations in rock drillability, this report of field drilling results extends earlier laboratory findings and provides a relatively simple procedure for predicting percussive drilling rates with reasonable accuracy. Two percussive drills mounted on a truck were used to drill a total of 25 rock types, and the results were used to develop a prediction equation. The equation was tested on a set of unrelated laboratory percussive drilling data, and the comparison between predicted and actual rates is shown in tabular form.

This report is a continuation and expansion of a previous USBM grant (No. G0254004) which examined alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams in a surface mining operation. The alternative methods consist of equipment implementation in either a stowing or haulback technique. Following a typical strip mine conformation, the parting is directly stowed or hauled back and placed in the pit bottom after second seam removal. The objectives are to produce an environmentally sound material placement technique and to increase prime stripping machine utilization. This report contains the engineering philosophy behind two computer programs created to evaluate parting handling methods over d wide range of coal and parting thickness ratios. The nature of the computer approach allows cost sensitivity analysis and quick updating of costs. The two programs are clearly presented with documentation and examples such that consumers may apply then to their own operations.

This study concerns itself with two topics of the mine ventilation - mine fire interface which, when the work for this study began, did not seem to receive sufficient attention. Section 1: Comments on Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in Mines It is attempted to describe heat generation, heat and oxygen transport, in such a way that existing experimental data for U.S. coals can be used to assess conditions inducive to spontaneous heatings quantitatively. Investigated are, in particular, critical air velocities, minimum sizes of coal accumulations, moisture contents and the influence of mining factors. An extensive, practice oriented literature survey is included. Section 2: The Early Detection of Mine Fires by Assessment. of Mine Gases The suitability of the major constituents of combustion products for an early detection of fires is discussed. The same is done for gas concentration ratios. Since it was felt (at least at the time when this report section was written) that the value of the carbon monoxide/oxygen deficiency ratio was overestimated, the usefulness of monitoring this ratio as compared to monitoring CO concentrations was critically investigated. The state of art concerning instrumentation and organization of fire detection systems is reviewed also.

The Bureau of Mines, in support of its overall goal of helping to meet future U.S. demand for minerals, undertook this study to aid the quarry entrepreneur and/or operator in developing quarries near urban areas. In response to increased environmental concerns, the quarry operator often must take steps beyond those required in the last decade toward gaining permits for quarrying near metropolitan areas. Following the steps suggested in this report should increase the chances to obtain the permits to open and develop a quarry. Each task and question in the general plan flow diagrams are described in detail, with the flow diagrams aimed at the goal of acquiring the necessary permits. The appendixes include (1) types of projects for which Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) may be prepared and Federal agencies responsible for preparing them, (2) State contacts for information regarding environmental impact assessment requirements and mining and mineral land reclamation laws, (3) a checklist of environmental inventory factors, (4) a tabulation of different regulations that affect mining in Michigan and the number of townships and counties that have each of the listed regulations, and (5) environmental logic associated with site selection. A central recommendation is that the quarry entrepreneur and/or operator coordinate plans at the beginning with local government officials (such as township supervisors and/or city and county planning board members), State and Federal officials, and public groups that will be affected.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the past 12 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development, of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. These plants, as the first step in the development of a synthetic fuels industry, would serve a threefold purpose:"

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 89 water well drillers died on the job between 1992 and 2002, and 28 of these deaths were electrocutions (Figure 1). In fact, elec­trical accidents are the leading on-the-job killer of water well drillers. The use of electricity is such an integral part of our lives that we usually take it for granted, but if we don?t understand or choose to ignore the hazards associated with electricity, the results can be deadly. Why is electrical shock so dangerous? If the voltage (of a shock) is sufficient to drive electrical current through your body, just 10 milliamps of cur­rent (1000 milliamps = 1 amp) can cause muscles to contract and prevent you from releasing an energized wire or tool in your grip. As little as 30 milliamps of current can paralyze your breathing, and 75 milli­amps can cause your heart to stop pumping blood (ventricular fibrillation). As a comparison, a small bedroom night-light draws about 30 to 60 milliamps. Other factors influence how severely you?ll be shocked if you touch a live electrical circuit, such as the path electrical current takes through your body and how long it flows, as well as your body weight. How much voltage is needed to drive electrical cur­rent through your body? Not much! Generally, any power source at 50 volts AC or higher is considered dangerous.

Recent legislation and expected future legislation is aimed at reducing the dust levels developed in underground coal mines. Several techniques for reducing dust levels are being evaluated. One of these is the modification of cutting parameters such as feed rates, cutting speeds, and pick configurations in order to reduce the amount of dust generated. In order to evaluate the feasibility of modifying cutting parameters to reduce dust, the Bureau of Mines commissioned Battelle to construct a small scale mining machine which could be used for evaluating the effects of those changes in cutting parameters. Specific features of this machine were that it should be highly instrumented to measure various cutting parameters, should have a wide range of feed and speed controls, and it should be possible to vary the pick configurations and geometries on the machine. In addition, it was desired that this machine should have cutting capabilities which greatly exceed present coal mining practice and also that the unit should be small enough and portable enough that it could be taken into and out of operating coal mines with a minimum of interference with the normal coal mine operations. The first step in constructing a machine to meet these requirements was to determine the cutting forces and approximate sizes of components which would be required to cut at the speeds and feeds specified by the Bureau of Mines. Initial calculations using; published data on cutting forces indicated that cutting forces in the neighborhood of 5,000 lbs and power levels of approximately 30 horsepower would be adequate for the application. However, further data developed during the course of the project indicated that when low efficiency picks are used, cutting forces and powers can be two to three times as high as these initially estimated values. Two computer programs for the real-time calculation of concentration distributions in the ventilation system of underground mines were designed. They allow one to simulate the movement of fumes or other contaminants with the ventilating air, the calculation of concentrations at any given point and time, and the determination of the total contaminant exposure at different places in the mine. Multiple and time variable contaminant sources can be handled and recirculation is no obstacle. The, first program is based on an airflow distribution which has, in the input data, to be stated. The second program has been linked to in existing program for the calculation of airflow distributions. Two versions of this second program are provided to accommodate the two existing programs. Several executed examples demonstrate the program performance.

The oxidation of structural materials at high temperatures in gas-cooled systems can be greatly retarded by the addition of small amounts of hydrogen to the inert coolant. In experimental equipment for gasifying coal with heat transferred by helium, the oxidation of graphite and metals (molybdenum, tungsten, and certain stainless steels) by trace impurities in the coolant helium was virtually eliminated by adding 0.1 to 1.0 percent hydrogen. The reaction of hydrogen with praphite does not preclude its use to retard oxidation; at 2,400° F. only 0.2 pound of graphite per square foot per year is lost for each percent of hydrogen in the helium. The addition of hydrogen appeared to prevent the mass transfer of carbon often associated with oxidation of graphite, without causing noticeable embrittlement of stainless steels and molybdenum or other damaging effects. This method has been tested in precision gas-recycle systems and applied successfully for more than a year in a pilot-scale unit operating at 250 pounds per square inch gage and 2,400° F. It is now used routinely and can be applied to many gas-cooled systems operating at high temperatures.

The petroleum industry continued to be the most important mineral activity in Bahrain during 1978-79. Revenues generated by the petroleum sector increased from $378 million' in 1977 to an estimated $419 million in 1978 and approximately $522.5 million in 1979, despite decreasing production over the 2 year period. There were two oilfields that produced revenues for Bahrain, the Awali oilfield, the nation's only onshore producer, and the Abu Sa'fah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf, north of Bahrain, The Await oilfield has been decreasing output from a high of 27,973,000 barrels in 1970 to 19,000,000 barrels in 1979. Bahrain shared the revenues from the Abu Sa'fah oilfield with Saudi Arabia, as settlement of an ownership dispute. For the first time, in 1978, revenues from the Abu Sa'fah oilfield represented over 50% of the total receipts from the petroleum sector. The years 1978-79 saw the gradual takeover of the Bahrain Petroleum Co. (Bapco), formerly a subsidiary of the California Texas Petroleum Co. (Caltex), by the Government-owned Bahrain National Oil Co. (Banoco). By yearend 1978, Banoco owned 60% of Bapco, and Caltex the remaining 40%. The Government-owned company controlled exploration concessions, managed domestic marketing of petroleum products, and controlled natural gas production and marketing. On December 15, 1979, the Bahrain Government completed full takeover of the Bapco operations. Bapco will continue to own and operate the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery located near Sitrah, as well as handle foreign marketing of petroleum products.

A field study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of a secondary ventilation system retrofitted onto an Eickhoff EDW 340L double-drum shearer as a technique for controlling respirable dust generated during a longwall mining operation. An airflow duct was formed by enclosing the bottom of the undercarriage with steel plate and cutting air channels through the ends of the undercarriage frame. Air intakes were provided behind each cutting drum and at several locations along the undercarriage. Grills were installed at the intakes to prevent the broken coal from entering the ducting. A dust collector consisting of 5,000-ft3/min fan, water sprays, and a minicyclone panel was installed on the shearer at the tailgate end. Field results indicated that the secondary ventilation system reduced respirable dust more than 60% along the face. Reduction was less near the intake airway and when secondary dust sources occurred.
