The regrinding stage is necessary to achieve the particle size (liberation) for the final upgrade in the cleaning flotation process. At present, vertical mills (Vertimill) are employed at industrial scale, using small steel balls as grinding media. The regrinding process characterization requires mixing regime knowledge along with the mean residence time of the liquid and solid phases. The residence time distribution (RTD) and the actual mean residence time estimations from theoretical relationships are complex due to the presence of three components (solid mineral, balls and water), mass transport characteristics and segregation affecting solid holdup. Therefore, the experimental RTD determination is suitable for industrial mills. In this work, RTD measurements were performed in two different industrial flotation plants. Both plants operate with Vertimills of 1000-1500 HP in the regrinding process with different circuit arrangements according to the plant treatment capacity. The RTD was measured using the radioactive tracer technique. This technique allows for non-invasive tracer detection where the procedure consists of selecting a liquid (Br82 in aqueous solution) or solid (irradiated solid) tracer for RTD data acquisition in real time. The RTD was modelled by the Large and Small Tanks in Series (LSTS) model, which allowed the characterization of the different mixing regimes for both liquid and solids in the regrinding mills. Effective mean residence times in the range 2-11 min were obtained with RTD shapes similar to those obtained in tumbling ball mills. It was found that residence times of liquid and fine particles were similar, which is consistent with results observed in other mixing systems, e.g. mechanical flotation cells. Also, the mean residence times estimated from the RTD allowed the mass balance adjustment to be validated from metallurgical sampling data. Beneficiation of alumina rich iron ore slimes is a major challenge for the Indian iron ore industry. One of the methods by which this problem might be addressed is by design/screening of suitable reagents (flocculants/depressants/collectors) which act selectively towards either aluminum containing minerals (gibbsite and kaolinite) or iron bearing minerals (hematite and goethite) in order to separate them. Our earlier work indicates that separation of iron oxide minerals from gibbsite is relatively more difficult than from kaolinite. Accordingly, our research work has been focused on finding selective reagents for iron oxide ? gibbsite separation. We have performed density functional theory (DFT) computations to evaluate the interaction energies of seven different reagent groups - carboxylic acid, flotol, hydroxamic acid, phosphonic acid, iminobismethyl phosphoric acid, xanthate and starch with hematite and gibbsite surfaces. The objective was to identify if any of these groups show selective adsorption towards one of the mineral surfaces. Among all these reagents, starch exhibits the highest selectivity towards the hematite surface with a difference in interaction energy of ~63 kcal/mol between hematite and gibbsite surfaces. This is consistent with experimental findings at our laboratories on slime samples from Noamundi mines wherein it is being observed that usage of starch as a flocculant does lead to an improvement in the final grade of the ore with significant reduction in the Al-content. A binuclear complexation mechanism based on affinity between Fe and Ostarch atoms combined with a geometrical templating effect, arising out of a close correspondence between Fe-Fe distance on the hematite surface and O-O distance in starch, is proposed to explain the strong adsorption of starch on hematite surface. "Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."

Beneficiation and dephosphorization of refractory oolitic hematite ore are investigated in this paper. It is shown that single magnetic separation, gravity separation or flotation is unable to recover iron effectively from the ore due to the complex mineralogy. The joint separation by spiral chute-shaking table shows a prospect for the treatment of the ore. An iron concentrate with 58.67% iron grade and 51.93% recovery is obtained by the joint separation of spiral chute and shaking table under the fineness of ?0.074mm 90% and dispersant dosage of 2kg/t for a sample ore of 37.51% Fe and 0.88% P. However, P content in the concentrate is still up to 0.52%. Dephosphorization from the concentrate is hence carried out. The final iron concentrate assaying 59.26% Fe and 0.056% P is obtained when the concentrate obtained by joint separation is leached by sulfuric acid of 1% (mass fraction) with solid percentage 10% at room temperature for 10min.

"Vizcachitas is an advanced stage copper–molybdenum porphyry deposit, fully owned by Los Andes Copper and located in Central Chile. The property contains an indicated resource of 1,038 million tonnes grading 0.37% Cu and 0.012% Mo, and an inferred resource of 318 million tonnes grading 0.345% Cu and 0.013% Mo (Coffey & Alquimia, 2014). The deposit occurs in the same geological belt as several other giant copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits including Río Blanco-Los Bronces, Los Pelambres-Pachon and El Teniente. In 2018, the original Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) study from 2014 was updated; this paper presents the geometallurgical testwork that was performed to support that update. The testwork focused on the metallurgical characterization of 40 DDH samples and the development of a more profound orebody knowledge by relating geological features with metallurgical performance. The scope of work included complete chemical and mineralogical QemSCAN characterization; SAG, ball mill and abrasion testing; complete rougher and cleaner kinetics including locked-cycle-test; environmental ABA and settling tests on rougher tailings. The results show that the ore can be classified as medium-hard, with a hardness that is slightly below the average for large Cu/Mo deposits in the region. A good correlation was found between lithology and breakage characteristics, implying that the specific energy consumption (kWh/t) is well correlated to rock type. The results of the flotation tests were very encouraging and did not show significant variability. An overall Cu recovery of 91% can be expected for the flotation circuit. The use of a relatively coarse primary grind size gave good final recovery and grade for both Cu and Mo, and deserves further attention in future work, as this impacts positively both energy consumption and water recovery.INTRODUCTION Los Andes Copper Ltd. is a Canadian exploration and development company focused on the acquisition, exploration and development of advanced stage copper deposits in Latin America. Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. Purified Na-montmorillonite samples were used as the starting materials to prepare organically modified montmorillonites (OM), and a series of OM samples were prepared by intercalation of al-kyl quaternary ammoniums with different alkyl chain length. The interlayer spacing (d001) of the OM was determined by small angle X-ray diffraction and its gelating performance was characterized by measuring the viscosity of OM/dimethylbenzene mixture. The effects of alkyl chain length, dosage of alkyl ammonium, intercalation duration and layer charge of the starting material on the OM structure and gelating properties were investigated. According to the results, the adsorption quantity of the alkyl ammonium is dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length, the dosage of the alkyl ammonium and the retention time. The adsorption quantity of the alkyl ammonium increases with the chain length and the dosage, and extra adsorption more than the CEC of the montmorillonite sample was observed under the dosages of more than 1.3 CEC. The interlayer spacing (d001) of the OM shows a dynamic variation with the dosage and the retention time, and super interlayer spacings greater than the length of the alkyl ammonium were observed under larger dosages and shorter retention times. However, the gelating performance of OM does not follow the variations of the adsorption quantity of alkyl ammonium, an optimum viscosity value of OM/ dimethylbenzene gel was observed with the moderate adsorption of the alkyl ammoniums. Furthermore, the layer charge plays an important role on the gelating performance of OM. The OM synthesized by the starting material with lower layer charge shows better gelating performance in the dimethylbenzene solution.

"This paper presents a new magnetic separator, which can be applied to increase the grade of fine magnetite ore feeding of ball mill. This innovative equipment possesses a rotating magnetic system and has a magnetic field of rapid polarity change which can strengthen the destruction of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of minerals to improve the quality of separation. Now this type separators have been successfully applied in several large concentrating plants such as Shuichang Iron Mine under Shouang Mining Company in China. Finally, this paper outlines practical results focused on feed grade and tailing yield, the results are showing that the quality of feeding can be improve tremendously. Hence, a new generator of rotating magnetic field has been paved. INTRODUCTION Jidong region in China is the important origin of iron ore, the characteristics of the iron ore in this region is low grade and complex, the iron mine discharges fine powder tailings reaches tens of millions of tons each year, in the wind action easy to form sand, this poses a threat to the atmosphere environment of Beijing. In order to reduce the mixing of large amount of useless ore and reduce the energy consumption of mill operation, a high efficiency pregrinding equipment is needed. Rotating magnetic field separator (RMS) is an advanced equipment, the main advantage of RMS is the significant reduction in particle entrapment and can easily break magnetic agglomeration. This reduction is so significant that RMS is capable of operating very close to theoritical limit for separator precision and can increace efficiency in selection process.Some expenrimental work on dry rotating magnetic field separation has been carried out in July 1998 in the company Ka Pty Ltd, then in 2008 BGRIMM developed industrial separation XCTG0816 in Shandong province . The wet RMS was researched in1960s in Former Soviet Union and the first industrial equipment was developed by BGRIMM in 1970s,then in 1990s wet RMS was applied in Ansteel group corporation. In 2017,6 units large wet RMS (SXCT1230)which were the largest RMS was applied in Sichuan province. No matter wet RMS and dry RMS, although they are used in differenct applications, they have some common research.in addition ,they all have good use effect."

The experiment adopted magnetic separation-priority flotation (first to float copper,then float lead) combined technology to deal with a complex Cu,Pb ,Zn multi-metals ore which has high sulphur content, difficult to separate Cu, Pb ,Zn minerals from sulphur and separate Cu from Pb. Floatable pyrrhotite was separated through magnetic separation which could eliminate the adverse effect on the flotation followed up. And then adopting the priority flotation process to recover the Cu, Pb ,Zn from the magnetic tailings. In priority, flotation Cu, BP(a kind of ethionine ester collector ) and ethyl xanthogenate were used as the collector, LD-1 and sodium sulphite were used as the depressant.The depressants combined with humic acid sodium and lime were used for chalcopyrite ? pyrite separation to further improve the copper concentrate grade. Considering the raw ore that contain 0.32% copper, 0.54% lead and 25.54% sulfur. The copper concentrate grade is 23.61%. The lead content of copper concentrate is only 0.85% . The recovery of copper is 75.03%,and the lead concentrate grade is 54.58%, the copper content of lead concentrate is only 0.81% and the recovery of lead concentrate is 62.24%. The mineral processing indexes were excellent, finally realizing the high effective separation of Cu, Pb , Zn and pyrite. This technique provides a new approach to highly utilize complex copper-lead-zinc ore.

"It has been suggested that hydroxo species, particularly those of calcium, selectively adsorb onto gangue minerals. Such species enhance the depressive action of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto gangue via an acid-base interaction between the positively charged mineral surface and the negatively charged CMC molecule. Thus, the hydrophilicity of gangue minerals is enhanced, preventing the dilution of the concentrate. However, as there is little evidence to support these claims it is important to investigate. Adsorption data and mineral surface charge analyses will allow a fundamental understanding into how electrolytes and their ionic strengths affect gangue-depressant adsorption. It is strongly anticipated that decoupling these effects will allow process operators to tailor their process water quality needs towards best flotation operating regimes and in the long run effect closed water circuits. Thus, using talc and pyrrhotite as proxies, this work investigates the influence of the ionic strength of process water on the adsorption of CMC onto minerals in sulphide flotation.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of gangue depression in mineral flotation is of critical importance as regards the attainment of a required concentrate grade. This thus suggests that the depressant of choice has to have a highly selective affinity for the targeted gangue minerals. This would ensure the necessary prevention of gangue from reporting to the concentrate without inadvertently depressing the value bearing mineral. The chemistry of the environment regulates the manner in which gangue depression occurs. In sulphide flotation, polysaccharides are used as depressants of choice to depress naturally floatable gangue which may in the case of Merensky ores exist as talc. The two widely used polysaccharides in the South African context are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and modified guar gum. It is suggested that polysaccharides depress gangue by rendering the surface of gangue hydrophilic or by preventing the formation of hydrophobic layers on gangue mineral surface, forming large gangue aggregates and thereby increasing their heterocoagulative nature (Shortridge et al., 1999)."

Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

"The study was conducted with the sulfide mineral from the province of Zamora Chinchipe. It was characterized physical, chemical and mineralogical, obtaining between its main results a copper concentration of head ore of 0,58 %. The mineral was homogenized and taken to direct closed circuit: rollers mill - vibratory sieve (mesh # 16). Flotation was carried out in two stages: the collective and selective where in each one were performed 6 water recirculation as suggested by the technique used to relate information of a batch flotation to a continuous circuit called cyclic flotation tests (LCT). In the collective flotation (bulk) 2 Kg of mineral were grinded with 10 Kg of balls for 30 minutes and 62.5% of solids, the pulp was taken to the flotation process with solids percentages of 33.3% and pH 7, it was conditioned with 45 g / t of KAX 1%, 50 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 20 g /t of Pine oil. The concentrate and tailings bulk obtained were filtered separately for the recovery of water and it was recirculated to the next grinding of 2kg mineral. In the selective flotation 1Kg of bulk concentrate was carried to regrind for 40 min, 62.5% percent of solids, 10 g of lime and 5 g of tannin FLOATAN T5, the pulp was taken to the roughing-collection-refining flotation circuit controlling the pH between 10.5 and 11 where conditioning (60 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 30 g/t of Pine oil) and adding lime to the circuit and FLOATAN according to the procedure. The four fractions obtained from the circuit were filtered; the water was recirculated to the regrind process of the bulk concentrate. In the collective flotation process tends to stability in the fourth recirculating water to obtain a copper content of 4.5% and a recovery of 87%, recirculated water represents 69.8% of all water used in the 6 recycles. In the selective flotation circuit the fifth recirculating of water is the optimal where obtaining a copper content of 13% and a recovery of 72%, recirculated water in the selective flotation circuit represents 95% of the total water used in the 6 recycles."

Producing robust agglomerates with desirable structural properties is the key to success of the heap leaching of complex, low-grade nickel laterite ores. Mechanically strong but porous agglomerates with narrow size distribution (e.g., 5 ? 40 mm) are required to build permeable and perennially stable heaps of 4 ? 10 m height. The characterization of granules? microstructure is essential for greater understanding and correlation with the concomitant mechanical properties and robustness. In this study, we used non-destructive, computed X-Ray tomography analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in tandem with conventional compressive strength,and integrity/stability tests to draw links between nickel (Ni) laterite agglomerate strength/stability, internal microstructure (e.g.,porosity, inter-particle bridges) and binder type. It is shown that binder composition (e.g., tap water vs. 30% w/w H2SO4) and post-agglomeration drying both significantly impact on granules? physicochemical and microstructural properties. Acidic binder, in contrast with tap water, leads to significant incongruent leaching of different species from particles during ore-binder mixing and agglomeration. Upon wet agglomerate curing, solidified/recrystallized leached species form strong intra-granular solid bridges which, lead to greater compressive strength of dry agglomerates. Structural stability/integrity of cured agglomerates in acidic solution, however, decreases dramatically due to greater porosity and acid solubility of intra-granular solid bridges. These findings are useful in shedding more light on agglomerate structure characteristics and their optimization for enhanced column and heap leaching with concentrated sulphuric acid.

The objective of this work is to investigate the inadequacies of current CFD based methodologies of model development for predicting combustion behavior of pulverized coal in furnaces. In the present paper, a steady state CFD model was used for in-depth analysis of pulverized coal combustion. The model accounts for turbulence, coal combustion, convective and radiative heat transfer and motion of coal particles. It also uses coal combustion models to account for important processes such as devolatilization, combustion of char and the evolution of fuel nitrogen during coal combustion. The model predicts fluid flow, heat transfer, progress of combustion and pollutant formation (NOx, etc.). The model uses several parameters, which need to be tuned with experimental data, which is not only limited in quantity but also insufficient in detail. Various existing methodologies like part calibration method for tuning of the parameters are discussed. In the present work, the parameters associated with coal combustion models were tuned and validated with published data obtained from an experimental furnace using one such part calibration methodology. The results clearly show that the model predictions differed with the experimental data not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. These discrepancies were attributed to part calibration methodology. A detailed parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the importance of parameters from various classes, namely, combustion kinetics, heat transfer, process and geometry parameters, and CFD model parameters. This investigation clearly indicates that parameters from different classes have significant effect on combustion behavior. The discrepancies in current methodology are discussed and a need for comprehensive methodology is highlighted. Systemic process mineralogy study on Baerbulawu refractory hematite ore in Kazakhstan has been carried out. The ore contains Fe 41.34%, and 87.26 % of which exists in hematite. Most hema-tite occurs as fine or ultrafine grains and its average size is only 0.015mm. The gangue is mainly composed of quartz, mica, chlorite, kaolinite and other clay minerals. The liberation of hematite is only 66% when the ore is grinded to 75% ?0.074mm, while part of gangue is already liberated from hematite under this grinding condition, so these gangue can be cast away by magnetic separation in advance. Hematite will not liberate completely from gangue untill grinding fineness reaches 86% ?0.038mm, at the same time, free particles of ultrafine hematite tend to coagulate randomly with quartz and clay minerals, so appropriate dispersant is necessary to pre-vent hematite and clay minerals from coagulation. Based on the process mineralogy research, final technology flowsheet is high-intensity magnetic separation by coarse grinding?rough magnetic concentrate regrinding?inverse flotation, and an ideal index is achieved. The yield of final iron concentrate is 43.46%, and its grade and recovery are 66.76% and 70.55% respectively. The research result is also useful to other similar iron ores.

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to produce titanium-rich material from Panzhihua ilmenite. The results showed preoxidation with sodium salt additive especially for Na2B4O7 signif- icantly advance the reduction of iron in Panzhihua ilmenite. Acceleration mechanism of preoxidation with Na2B4O7 has been studied here. The maximum metallization of iron 92% can be obtained under conditions of preoxidation at 850? for 30 min and subsequent reduction at 1100? for 150 min. The rusting separation technique to reduced ilmenite has been further studied, obtaining titanium-rich product with TiO2 over 82% and the recovery of TiO2 above 97%.

"A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The smelting tests were conducted as part of a wider CSIRO Minerals’ research project aimed at developing a single-stage continuous copper-making process. The objective of the flotation work was to maximise copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases.In rougher/scavenger tests on the reduced low copper and self-pulverising slags copper recoveries above 92% were obtained with copper enrichment ratios varying between 2.3 and 2.9. For the oxidised high copper slag copper recoveries were poorer - only 47% of the copper was recovered with an enrichment ratio of 3.3. The presence of the slow floating copper-ferrite phases in the slags limited further (selective) copper recovery. Ageing of the high copper slag, that is, a significant delay between grinding and flotation, resulted in a deterioration of the copper flotation response.The critical parameter affecting the flotation of copper from direct converting slags was found to be the form of the copper in the slag. Slags containing a higher proportion of the more desirable form of copper for flotation will provide the best opportunity for high copper recoveries to be consistently obtained, allowing improvements in the economics of the overall copper-making process."

The results of the test work of four treatment options of three refractory gold-pyrite and gold-arsenic flotation concentrates are presented. These concentrates were obtained during the concentration of primary ores of large gold deposits. It was found that ultrafine grinding of refractory flotation concentrates did not increase the recovery of gold during subsequent cyanidation. The elimination of sulfur and arsenic during oxidative roasting is 99 per cent. 88-93 per cent of gold is recovered by cyanidation from calcines. After biooxidation of the flotation concentrates with a mixture of strains Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans 88-91 per cent of gold is recoverable by direct cyanidation. The recovery of gold from flotation concentrates by pressure oxidation is 88-99 per cent. These results suggest that gold recovery is important but the following strategies would have an impact on a plant performance and would be considered when developing an option to treat refractory ores: capital and operating costs, ore reserves, mine location, infrastructure and qualified staff. This investigation was undertaken to assess the possibility of ash and sulfur removal by microbial action of high sulfur-content coal. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans have been used for biodesulfurization of coal. Feed samples were provided from Tabas coal mine located in Yazd province, Iran. The sample contained 28.80% ash and 2.30% sulfur. Flotation tests were implemented to optimize the effective parameters in these cells which were constant during bio-flotation tests. According to the results, obtained from various tests using Taguchi orthogonal array design (L27), the values of optimized parameters were pH at 7, 1000 g/t gas oil as a collector, 10% solid content, 15 min conditioning time, 100 g/t MIBC as a frother and 800 rev/min rotor speed. Bio-flotation tests are carried out by means of laboratory double discharge cell and mesophilic bacteria as depressant reagent using above mentioned optimized parameters. The bio-flotation experiments were conducted based on a Taguchi orthogonal array design (L9) with four variables (bacteria type, bacteria count, rotor speed of mixer and bio-conditioning time). The collected data was analyzed by using DX7.0, Minitab14.0 and WinRobust1.02 softwares for evaluation the effect of each parameter on the optimization criteria. Considering the highest combustible recovery and the lowest ash and sulfur content, the value of optimized bacteria type, bacteria count, rotor speed of mixer and bio-conditioning time were Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, 5×107 cells/g(coal), 100 rev/min and 20 min respectively. Under this condition, ash and sulfur content and combustible recovery were predicted 12.39%, 2.08% and 82.03% respectively.

The major components of sylvinite ores, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), are separated by flotation. Since both these minerals are water-soluble, the process is carried out in a saturated brine, 6~7 mol/L aqueous solution of NaCl and KCl. C16~C22 primary amines, utilized as a collector, are practically insoluble in water. In commercial potash ore flotation operations these amines are melted by heating up to 70~90°C. They are then neutralized with hydrochloric or acetic acids, and such a hot emulsion/dispersion is introduced to the flotation pulp (which is at room temperature). This is immediately accompanied by the appearance of a white precipitate in the system. As our measurements indicate, the Krafft point of dodecylammonium chloride in concentrated electrolyte solutions is much higher than 80°C, and the Krafft point of C16~C22 amines is substantially higher than that. Introduction of a hot amine emulsion into a pulp, at temperature much lower than the Krafft point for the utilized amines, must cause precipitation of the amines. Some of these species are obviously flotation-active. It is interesting to observe that in summertime, when temperatures are high-er, longer chain amines perform better. It demonstrates that the colloidal amine species that precipitate serve as active species in the potash flotation. Therefore, at higher pulp temperatures, when the temperature difference between the pulp temperature and the Krafft temperature of the utilized amine is not sufficiently large, a longer chain amine, the amine with a higher Krafft point, is more efficient. The results reveal that premixing of an alcohol such as MIBC (common frother) with the amine significantly improves flotation performance of the amine. In the presence of such an alcohol the amine disperse system becomes less turbid, and the rheology of the system less non-Newtonian. All this indicates that MIBC, which does not operate as a frother in a potash flotation system, when used as a co-surfactant, enhances the dispersion of the amine colloidal system. The appearing colloidal species perform as an active form of the collector.
