"The Falconbridge Limited approach to employing communication equipment is first, to determine what is required in a given situation, second, to evaluate the possible alternatives, third, to select the most suitable hardware and, fourth, to determine what modifications, if any, are required to ensure not only successful implementation but continued low-cost reliability. Two examples are examined.The first situation required remote video monitoring of an acid loadout station. Several alternatives for linking to theremote site were investigated, including hard-wired, slow-scan and microwave. A comparison of these alternatives is shown and an appraisal of the performance of the selected microwave link is presented.The second situation required direct voice contact between the two members of an underground tram crew. Alternative solutions are described and an evaluation of the selected system- SHF portable radios - is presented.ObjectivesIn general, projects must have four main objectives: (1) to improve the safety of its operations; (2) to reduce its operating and capital costs; (3) to increase the efficiency of its work force; and (4) to increase its productivity. ScopeCommunication, when used wisely, can be a good tool to achieve these objectives. Projects can be kept simple using existing technology and adapting it to a particular task. To ensure the success of the project, it was necessary: to determine the project objectives; to evaluate the possible alternatives; to select the most suitable hardware; to adapt the hardware to the application, if required; and not to provide more than is necessary.Application at FalconbridgeTo illustrate this approach, two examples of actual installations at the Sudbury Operations are presented, sulphuric acid loadout, and the Falconbridge Mine haulage system."

"The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. "The roasting and gas handling circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at the Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs.Product from the up-stream dry grinding circuit requires roasting to maximize gold recovery. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type “double refractory” ores. Double refractory is indicative of the gold being difficult to direct leach due to a combination of pyrite encapsulation and the carbonaceous preg-robbing of the ore.A very extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NO, reduction before venting to the atmosphere.The roasted calcine is quenched, neutralized and then thickened before leaching in the carbon-in-leach-circuit.INTRODUCTIONBarrick’s strategic development plan integrated the production of gold from Goldstrike’s carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1 996. Processes considered included autoclaving followed by a proprietary ammonium thiosulfate leaching process, fine grinding/autoclaving as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by then Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike’s carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated."

"Pamour Porcupine Mines of Timmins, Ontario operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the area. The area milling concept was adopted by Pamour in 1971 and has been used successfully since then. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages and the problems of area milling. Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the Porcupine region. The area milling concept was adopted as the route to survival for Pamour and has worked successfully. HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDProduction of gold from the Porcupine region in Northern Ontario started in the early 1900's and has been continuous since that time. Some of the major operators were companies such as Mcintyre, Hollinger, Dome, Pamour, Paymaster and the list goes on. An underground survey would reveal hundreds of miles of drifts and raises. The main group of mines extends from South East of Timmins to the Pamour Mine, 15 miles to the east. During the lean years of the sixties when gold prices were low, labour costs were rising rapidly, and ore grades were dropping, many of the area mines closed down their operations."

"EPD (Electric Pulse disaggregation) and HS (hydroseparation) are exceptional technologies for research, concentration, evaluation, and mineral extraction of specific minerals such as precious metals (Au, Ag, PGM), kimberlites (extraction and concentration of indicator minerals), zircons and baddeleyite (recovery of objects for geochronology), and even gemstones (method of evaluation and production of the 100% gemstone concentrate of ideal crystals) etc. EPD is used for recovery of pristine undamaged crystals of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire etc, including large crystals. It was tested on various hard ores and was especially successful for recovery of “soft” minerals from “hard” matrix. EPD products are very convenient for HS processing, resulting in representative concentrates of all heavy minerals including the finest particles (5-10 µm). The combined EPD and HS method enables high sensitivity (20 ppb) for evaluation of precious metal ores providing objective information about original grain size, associations, and recovery using a very small amount of sample (1-3 kg). Latest developments of EPD and HS techniques at CNT Mineral Consulting Inc. include the HS-21 hydroseparator (50 kg/hr) and the Spark-21 EPD (5 t/hr), which enables use of both techniques for prospecting and mineral processing of industrial size samples of certain ores.INTRODUCTIONThe main task for mineral processors is to find a reliable technology for testing of mining feasibility and the efficiency of mineral extraction procedures. Among various mineral processing approaches of extraction and concentration there are two alternative cost-effective methods that can be described as the most environmentally benign and complementary: electric-pulse disaggregation and hydroseparation. These techniques were tested on many different ore types and process products with great success providing a precise and comprehensive mineralogical determination of different accessory precious metal and other useful minerals constituent in rocks, ores, and tailings.This article describes several examples of EPD and HS use: native gold from the Kostomuksha deposit (Karelia, Russia), a Ag-Au deposit in South America, zircons from ancient ultramafic igneous rocks of SW Greenland, bauxites of West Australia, PGM from the Driekop dunite pipe and gemstones (ruby, sapphire, emerald and demantoid) from different deposits."

"Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. "COMMON METHODS OF ELIMINATION: The four methods most frequently used to dispose of cyanide wastes are:1. Oxidation2. Dilution with water or with cyanide free wastes3. Acidification and dilution of resulting gas with air4. Alkaline ChlorinationMost operators practice a combination of the first two methods, allowing oxidation and dilution of cyanide waste in tailings ponds. Then, pond effluent is introduced to a stream for further dilution andoxidation which is expected to take care of the cyanide. This method oftreatment does work to a certain degree. Atmospheric oxidation in tailings ponds and in receiving streams chemically breaks down the cyanide radical to form carbon dioxide and nitrogen.2(CN) + 202 2 CO2 + N2The monetary advantage to this method is obvious to the operator but too frequently though, climatic conditions are ignored. Length of winter, and reduced flow of the receiving stream in summer, adversely restricts the result of this combined method. For those of us who rely mainly on dilution it would be wise to remember that 70 million pounds of water are required to dispose of one pound of sodium cyanide (1).The third method outlined involves addition of acid in a closed vessel and venting resulting gas to atmosphere with or without air dilution by mechanical means. Cost, safety and some form of secondary treatment to complete destruction of cyanide remaining in the solution usually make this method prohibitive.The alkaline chlorination method is the one most commonly accepted for treating cyanide bearing wastes since it is felt that cyanide is completely eliminated in this manner."

Portland cement is primarily used to solidify backfill in underground mine workings and it represents a major cost in mining operations. CANMET-MMSL has invented an alternative binder technology that does not contain any amount of Portland cement and is made using waste materials, such as development rock and smelter slag. The technology has been successfully tested with many types of base metal and ferrous slag. Research conducted in collaboration with several mining operations in Canada has shown that the CANMET-MMSL binder has considerable potential as a replacement for Portland cement in mine backfill. An integral part of the overall mining operation, backfill is used for two main purposes: safety and environmental remediation. Depending on the mining method used, backfill provides a working surface, stabilizes stope and pillar walls, as well as the surrounding rock mass, and controls caving of stope backs. There are several benefits associated with the replacement of Portland cement in backfill, including reductions in (i) the footprint by placement of slag waste underground, (ii) the environmental effects and long term liability resulting from disposal and containment of slag waste on surface such as acid rock drainage, (iii) GHG as a result of reduced Portland cement usage (the production of 1 ton of Portland cement produces 1 ton of GHG), and (iv) the significant costs associated with reduced Portland cement usage.

In presenting a thesis on this subject it is advisable to explain a few of the reasons for its seeming incompleteness. World progress has brought us to a position where approximations are not only to be condoned, but regarded as absolute essentials. Production in anticipation of demand is always accompanied by mistakes on the part of the producers. Only through trial and sometimes erring hypotheses may there be evolved the true course and theory upon which the steady triumphant march of world-wide industry depends. The average person likes to have everything placed ?before him in a clear and convincing manner. It is the impossibility of doing this which, in many cases, arises to confound the writer on shales. All that one can do is to present, as lucidly as possible, the known hypotheses' and theories on the subject and leave the reader to study and work out the truth for himself. Many theories have been advanced on the origin of oil-shales ; some may be correct in certain instances and not in others; however, the writer will attempt no decision as to which are and which are not correct, but .will merely point out the relative merits of each. The figures given for reserves of oil and shale in different countries are only approximations and give but a rough idea of the true conditions.

"Louvicourt Mine's concentrator, located near Val d'Or, Quebec, treats an average of 4,300 tonnes of ore per day composed mainly of copper, zinc, gold and silver. An analysis of concentrator revenues and metallurgical losses shows a potential for additional gain, particularly in regards to precious metals (kustelite) where recovery is usually around 67 -70 %. The planning, installation and trial operational period of two Outokumpu SK-240 flash cells at the underflow of the primary cyclones took two years. The use of (( flash flotation )) technology has made it possible to exploit the favourable conditions at the underflow of the primary cyclones such as precious metal concentration and the presence of liberated coarse chalcopyrite. These conditions permit early flotation (fresh surfaces) of the kustelite and the liberated copper. Since the start-up of the flash cells, the metallurgical gains have turned out to be very positive with increases in metal recovery reflected in appreciable NSR gains. Also, significant savings in reagent consumption and a coarser copper concentrate have made it possible to reduce the drying cycle of the Larox filter presses since the cells were put into operation.BACKGROUNDLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. (30% ownership) on behalf of its partners Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corp. (25%). The mine is located in northwestern Quebec about 600 km north of Montreal and about 25 km east of the mining town of Val d'Or. The mine commenced commercial production in July 1994.The massive sulphide ore deposit lies at depths varying between 450 m and 900 m. Mining reserves (2% Cu equi. cut-off) as of Jan. Is', 2000 are estimated at 7.5 million tonnes of ore averaging 3.4% Cu, 1.8% Zn, 28.0 g/t Ag and 0.9 g/t Au. Delineated ore reserves permit the use of a mechanized transverse blasthole mining method. The extraction order is a typical 1.3.5 mining sequence. Primary and secondary stopes are 15 m wide, 15 to 70 m long (25 m long average) and 30 m high. Backfilling for pillar recovery and regional stability is required."

This paper describes a focus of work presently being conducted at the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the University of British Columbia. The underhand method under consolidated fill ensures a high recovery under an engineered back that is comprised of cemented rock fill and/or cemented paste fill. This method of mining is generally necessary either due to a weak rock mass comprising the immediate back and/or high induced back stresses. A major concern in the design of sill mats is the loading and strengths associated with the overlying sill mat. This paper reviews past practice coupled with present observations and measurements from over ten(10) mines throughout North America. It outlines areas of concern in terms of design requirements.

"Changes have recently been applied to the Sullivan Concentrator lead and zinc circuits to treat fine-grained ores which make-up the majority of ore reserves in the mine. Pilot plant test work conducted in 1990-91 indicated that concentrate grades would be substantially improved by reducing the particle size (P,0) of the lead from 38 to 15 µm and the zinc from 45 to 24 µm.Circuit revisions involved installation of major new equipment including: two GUO kilowatt Vertimills for regrinding, a 4 metre diameter column flotation cell and a 4 metre diameter hyperbaric pressure filter for dewatering. Duties of the existing regrind mills were reassigned.IntroductionThe Sullivan ore body is a massive sulphide deposit consisting of fine grained mixtures of sulphides, sometimes inter-banded with country rock and varying widely in their content of lead, zinc, iron and silicates. Principal economic minerals are marmatite and galena. Iron is mainly present as pyrrhotite (85%), and to a lesser extent as pyrite (15%) .The orebody has been actively mined since 1923, with 1992 ore reserves estimated at 15,800,000 tonnes with an average grade of 4. 7% lead and 7. 9% zinc. Current plans call for treatment of 1,600,000 tonnes/year, (7,000 tonnes per operating day), with flotation feed grades of 5.9% lead, 10.1% zinc, and 22.0% iron."

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates two mines; one open pit (No. 6) and one underground (No. 12), approximately 20 miles south-west of Bathurst, New Brunswick. Both are massive sulphide deposits containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. The No. 12 property began operation in 1963 and is presently being mined at a rate of 3600 tons per day underground and is in the completion stages of an expansion to achieve 11,000 tons per day underground by the end of 1930.Originally at Brunswick Mining, acid mine drainage was added to tailings and neutralized by an excess of lime in the tailings. A conventional recycle system was established with a biostabilization pond for the treatment of thiosalts, a liming station and sludge settling area for neutralization of acidic water and a final reclaim pond with a pumping station for reclaim water.We found that not more than one third of the reclaim water could be used as it upset the flotation circuit every time it was used. It was established that the mine water and surface drainage were the cause due to oils and detergents in the water. It was also found that the biostabilization pond method Cf thiosalt treatment was not efficient for year round operation in our climate.In 1974, we reviewed the problems and began a 3 phase program to control effluents from the property:"

The paper explores the substance, circumstances and significance of the Whelpley and Storer Copper Process. The 1866 Whelpley and Storer patent specified a process combining mechanical and chemical engineering. The process called for a down-drafting shaft furnace with a horizontal flue connected at the bottom of the shaft. Powdered sulphide ore was roasted in the shaft and then sent forward fully oxidized to a bath of sulphuric acid and/or calcium chloride. The “water furnace” was developed in Boston, at a time when the city was home to most Michigan copper mining companies. The process was field-tested at Quebec’s Harvey Hill copper mine. In 1865 James Douglas, Jr. took over management of the Harvey Hill mine with the challenge of saving the family investment. He needed a way to make money from low-grade sulphides. Through his relationship with chemist T. Sterry Hunt, Douglas learned of a possible way ahead using the process developed by Whelpley and Storer. The paper confirms the centrality of publications, meetings, and networking in the advancement of metallurgy. The process is of interest historically, as much as anything, because it is one of the pillars of James Douglas’ distinguished career in copper. INTRODUCTION At the 1866 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Buffalo, New York, T. Sterry Hunt (1826–1892) read a paper “On the Metallurgical System of Messrs. Whelpley and Storer.” The paper is part of a chain of events that constitute the foundation of James Douglas’ (1837–1918) success in the copper mining industry. To understand the career of Douglas over the early years of modern copper mining, we must necessarily start with Whelpley and Storer. Going back to Hunt’s paper, he concluded his remarks by asserting that the Whelpley and Storer Process was “capable of such wide and varied application, that it is probably destined to have a very important influence on the industry of the world” (Hunt, 1867a). He reached this conclusion reasoning that the process had overcome a critical metallurgical hurdle (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt, a geo-chemist in modern terms, recalled that the chemist of those years easily separated copper from “sulphuretted” ores by converting it to a soluble salt from which pure metal was precipitated by “an equivalent of iron.” The problem was to “…apply this principle in the working of copper ores on a great scale...” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt noted that this very problem had “…engaged the attention of many metallurgists, and has given rise to various processes for obtaining copper by the moist way, many of which are nearly or quite perfect in their operation, but are lacking in practicability and cheapness” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt thought Whelpley and Storer had overcome the low-grade sulphide hurdle with a commercially viable engineering breakthrough. Yet in the history of copper metallurgy, the process is missing. Ground instability and subsequent rock falls are a major concern in underground mines. As a result, several mining companies are conducting risk assessments of the ground support installed in their mines. Risk assessment is now commonly used to provide mine operators with a systematic process to assess the strategic risks that could lead to injury to personnel or loss of production, and evaluate possible risk control measures. Risk assessments can be carried out to identify major hazards, assess the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of each hazard and estimate the level of risk. This process allows assessment of possible remediation actions to minimize the risk and likelihood of occurrence or mitigation of the consequences to a level that is reasonable and practical. This paper presents two practical mine applications of qualitative risk assessment of ground support to highlight the benefits of this process. Yearly or bi-yearly risk assessment of mine excavations can assist mine operators in prioritizing resources and areas that require support remediation. In addition, it provides a mechanism for proactive response to reduce potential risks associated with personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental impact. It also provides a baseline against which changes in ground condition can be compared and quantified.
