A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. "This paper describes the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for mineral exploration by using the Eskay Creek area of northern British Columbia as an example. Data entry, analysis and output are discussed. Examples of some of the capabilities of the technology are presented.The main benefit of the technology is being able to perform complex and sophisticated searches of large and diverse data sets to highlight exploration targets. A GIS is a powerful data management tool that can be used in mineral exploration. It is a computer based system that is designed for the collection, storage and analysis of objects and phenomena where geographic location is an important characteristic. The main function of the GIS is to produce information for the geologist from a variety of sources (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral deposits and so forth) quickly and efficiently. This allows the geologist to examine large amounts of data in a fraction of the time than can be done using conventional manual methods."

"IntroductionThe Coal Branch region of west-central Alberta has been the focal point for unprecedented exploration and development activities over the past ten years prompted by the renewed markets for high-quality thermal coal. Although mines were developed and operated extensively throughout the region from 1910 until 1960, information relating to the detailed stratigraphy of the coal measures and their areal distribution tended to be localized to individual mine sites. Continuity along trend was impaired by a paucity of outcrop restricting geologic mapping to stream bank and roadside exposures. Recent studies and subsequent publications by Jerzykiewicz and McLean of the Geological Survey of Canada (1978, 1980) have established a detailed sedimentological model and defined the stratigraphic nomenclature for the region . The term Coalspur Beds has been adopted to describe the coal-bearing sequence between the overlying Paskapoo Formation and underlying Brazeau Formation. Complete sections of the Coalspur Beds have been compiled from sub-surface borehole data and published by Manalta Coal Ltd ., Dentherm Resources Ltd. and Luscar Stereo Ltd. This paper is an attempt to correlate this information on a regional basis to illustrate trends within the Coalspur Beds."

"Abstract - Based upon an extensive database, this paper analyzes the record of modern mineral exploration success and establishes the 50-year trends in discovery. The record clearly shows that the overall discovery rate rose during the 1950s and 1960s, peaked in the 1980s, and fell during the 1980s and 1990s. By commodity and ore-type target, the pattern of discovery is not continuous. Typically, it is episodic as a series of waves with minor resurgence. The waves reflect the order of the so-called discovery booms, led by uranium, then nickel, and copper, polymetallic base metals and gold. With the possible exception of gold, the discovery booms appear to be independent of metal price, although favorable perceptions of the price outlook may well have initiated the boom or led resurgence. Although difficult to quantify, an emerging trend in modern discovery is the integration of several detection techniques into the search process. No doubt, this trend will continue as orebodies become more and more difficult to find. The record of the past two decades shows that greenfield discovery rates have progressively fallen even though the level of investment in exploration has risen to an all-time high. This trend reflects increasing discovery risk. Several factors are contributing to this trend. Perhaps the two most important are: (1) deteriorating economics as increasing real costs and decreasing real prices continue to raise the economic hurdles for minimum acceptable exploration targets, and (2) increasing exploration maturity in many search terrains, particularly those in the traditional regions of North America and Australasia. To succeed cost-effectively in this new environment of increasing discovery risk will require extraordinary creativity, innovation, and technical skill coupled with commercial discipline."

Improved depletion allowance rules, expanded investment tax credits, better use of business losses, and inflation proofing of personal capital gains on Canadian common shares are all part of the measures included in Mr. Lalonde's first budget to try to reinvigorate the battered Canadian economy.Improved DepletionUnder the Income Tax Regulations, a taxpayer who incurs Canadian exploration expense (and certain other eligible expenses) is permitted to deduct not only the full amount of the Canadian exploration expense (""CEE""), but also an additional allowance (the so-called earned depletion allowance) equal to one-third of the CEE. Thus, a taxpayer in certain circumstances can claim a deduction of $1.33 for each $1.00 of eligible expenditure, including CEE.Although CEE can be deducted from any source of the taxpayer's income (for example, from investment income, salary income, and so on), prior to budget date the earned depletion allowance was deductible only from the taxpayer's resource profits. This restriction on the deductibility of the earned depletion allowance substantially reduced the attraction of the allowance: few individual investors or investment companies, for example, have the required stream of resource profits, at least when the CEE or other eligible expenditure is made."

"IntroductionThe western region of North America has long been considered a dynamic market supporting such diversified industries as lumber, agriculture, cement, and electronics. In recent years however, the region has also been the focus of a great deal of activity in the extender and filler mineral s business from companies seeking to position themselves to take advantage of the large demand for these materials both here and abroad.Extender and Filler MineralsExtender and filler mineral s include 15different products used in numerous end uses. The nine most important extenders and fillers are listed in Table I. These products range in price from under $50 a ton to over $4,000 a ton and basically represent the following three different types of minerals:Particulate products-Calcium carbonate; Kaolin; Silica.Platy minerals-Talc (Montana, Canada); Mica.Fibrous minerals-Talc (California, Eastern U.S .A.);Wollastonite.What distinguishes these products from other industrial minerals? For one thing, an important feature of extender and filler minerals is that they are used primarily in such consumer non-durable good s as paper, paint, plastics, sealants, and rubber which traditionally do not react as violently to swings in the economic cycle. In addition, these minerals are sold principally on key physical properties, usually brightness, particle size and shape, oil absorption, and hardness. As part of the physical minerals segment of industrial minerals, extenders and fillers are traditionally the most stable group and typically the most profitable. Studies by C.H. Kline over the past decade on extender and filler minerals has revealed historic average profitability (expressed as a percentage on sales) nearly double that of most other industrial mineral s.The demand for these minerals in the western region (Fig. 1), closely follow s the areas of greatest population concentration. These markets include pulp and paper, mainly in the Pacific Northwest, and paint, around Los Angeles and San Fran cisco. Non-energy raw materials are vital inputs for the EU?s economy and maintaining fair and undistorted access to these materials for EU industry and citizens is increasingly difficult. Within the EU, exploration and extraction have to face increased competition for different land uses and a highly regulated environment. While the EU is currently dependent on the importation of many metals, the overall potential for mining and quarrying in Europe is strong. In spite of this, the land area available for extraction in the EU is constantly decreasing, turning access to land into a key challenge for the extractive industry. The EOMINERS project aims at contributing to demonstrate how to improve the EU capacity in implementing new mining sites and their societal and environmental acceptability. The overall aim of EO-MINERS (Earth Observation for Monitoring and Observing Environmental and Societal Impacts of Mineral Resources Exploration and Exploitation) is to bring into play EO-based methods and tools to facilitate and improve interaction between the mineral extractive industry and the society in view of its sustainable development while improving its societal acceptability. EO offers a unique opportunity to collect necessary spatial parameters that play a key role for better assessments of mining-related environmental and societal impacts. It could enable the development of means to identify the site-specific environmental and societal footprints of mineral resource extraction and to determine their respective significance. This understanding of global and cumulative footprints along a causal chain is needed in order to target policy measures. In this way the expected reduction of environmental and societal footprints in the mining sector can be most effective for the environment and more cost-efficient for public authorities and commercial operators. The project first defined environmental, socio-economic, societal, and sustainable development indicators and criteria that can possibly be dealt with using EO techniques. After an analysis of policies related to the environmental and social footprint of mineral industries, project expertise and stakeholder interviews (national and on-site) as well as site investigations led to the establishment of a list of indicators to be monitored, either directly or indirectly, through accessible parameters. Development of EO-based monitoring tools is then carried out over three demonstration sites: the lignite open pit of Sokolov in Czech Republic, the Mpumalanga coalfield centred on the town of Emalahleni (previously Witbank) in South Africa, and the Makmal gold mine in Kyrgyzstan. From these developments, it is subsequently intended to contribute to the development of generic, standardised EO data integration schemes, in particular in view of characterising affected ecosystems, populations, and societies and prepare indisputable documents that will make the basis for a sound ?trialogue? between industry, governmental organisations, and stakeholders. This paper discusses results obtained after three years into the project, focusing on product development over the demonstration sites and their relevance to the observation and monitoring of environmental and societal footprints of the extractive industry.

"This paper describes the revisions to the heating and ventilating system at the Frood-Stobie mill, which resulted in substantial savings in energy costs.IntroductionInco Metals Company, a unit of Inco Limited, is involved in the mining and processing of nickel-copper ores. The Ontario Division of Inco Metals consists of 10 operating mines, with 5 mines and open pits on a standby basis, and 10 pro- cessing facilities, located in Sudbury, Port Colborne and Shebandowan. In 1980, the Ontario Division's energy expenditures amounted to $87,000,000.Due to the accelerating cost of energy, the Division established an Energy Management Program in 1975 to define, evaluate and implement measures to reduce energy cost and consumption per unit of output by 10% by 1980. This falls in line with the goals set by the mining and metallurgical task force on voluntary energy conservation.To effectively implement the program, Plant Committees were established at each plant and mine area, with an energy management coordinator appointed to coordinate the activities. The Plant Committee's responsibilities include identifying the major areas of energy consumption, isolating areas with large potential losses and determining what action should be taken to improve energy efficiency.Within a five-year period from 1975 to 1980, the Ontario Division has been able to cut its energy consumption by 8.9 trillion BTUs, the equivalent of 1.5 million barrels of oil."

Aluminum alloys are frequently grain refined during solidification in order to promote the formation of an equiaxed grain structure in the casting. The application of Ti-based grain refiners and/or Ti containing master alloys for improving mechanical properties may result in formation of Al-Ti based intermetallics. Although the grain refinement produces many desirable qualities in aluminum castings such as improved castability and mechanical properties, the addition of Ti to Al-Si foundry alloys may lead to the formation of some undesirable intermetallic particles such as AlTiSi and cause a number of operational problems such as nozzle blockage due to segregation and agglomeration of aluminide particles within the nozzle. There are several questions to be clarified when minor amount of Ti is added to Al-Si alloys. They include nucleation and growth of AlTiSi particles, their morphologies and orientation relationships with aluminum matrix and the dissolution of these intermetallics during the course of solidification and/or post solidification treatments. The current study was initiated to study the process and possible mechanism of aluminide dissolution and the related phenomena such as segregation and agglomeration. It reports the results found during reheating of laboratory prepared Ti-added A356 alloy at three temperature ranges of below solidus, mushy zone and above liquidus.

"Laboratory and miniplant testwork was carried out to reject uranium from an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposit that contains an average of 60-70 ppm uranium with high variability. The dominate copper bearing mineral is chalcopyrite with minor bornite and trace covellite. The main gangue minerals are iron-rich chlorite, quartz and magnetite. The main uranium-containing mineral is uraninite (UO2). Downstream processes require the maximum uranium level of no more than 80 ppm in final copper concentrate.Mineralogical examination reveals that uraninite particles are finely disseminated with grain size of less than a few microns in the deposit requiring fine regrind in order to liberate uraninite from chalcopyrite particles. A lab flowsheet was developed to include ultrafine regrind of the rougher concentrate to the particle size of 80% passing 11-13 µm with up to four stages of recleaning in flotation columns. Finer regrind to 80% passing 5-6 µm may continue to improve liberation but does not decrease uranium level in the final concentrate. In each of the successive recleaning stages by flotation column after fine regrind, uraninite is rejected into the column tailings, with the final copper gold concentrate containing less than 70 ppm uranium from a feed containing 83 ppm uranium. The conceptual flowsheet was further tested in an integrated, continuous miniplant showing average 94% copper recovery with average 74 ppm uranium. The uraninite particles that report to the final concentrate are either locked with chalcopyrite or entrained as liberated particles of less than 5 µm in size."

"Electrodialysis (ED) is an electro-membrane technology based on electrochemical process using electrical energy for the production of chemicals. The process can be used for concentrating, extracting, separating products, modifying molecules, purifying solutions, pH adjustment and regenerating salts into their base and acid. This paper reviews the principle of ED, present some of the different options and discuss applications that are relevant to the hydrometallurgy and mining industries for the treatment of effluents focusing on recovery of chemicals (acid and metals) and recycling of water minimizing the environmental footprint.INTRODUCTIONElectrodialysis (ED) is usually defined as an electrochemical separation process in which electrically charged membranes and an electrical potential difference are used to separate ionic species from an aqueous solution and other uncharged components [1]. ED technology consists of an electro-membrane technology based on an electrochemical process using electrical energy for the production of chemicals. It is a method combining electrolysis and dialysis was proposed for the first time in 1890 by Maigrot and Sabates [2]. In the late 1930s Teorell, Meyer and Sievers discussed membrane phenomena, revealed membrane potential, electric conductivity, transport number [3]. Meyers and Strauss introduced a multi-compartment ED apparatus consisting of two electrodes and a stack of ion-exchange membranes between them [1]. They succeeded to double the concentration of a KCL solution [3- Tarleton]. In general, ED consumes less energy than electrolysis to perform salt splitting. In that regard, one can expect an energy reduction of about 30% [4–5]. ED offers a great versatility in the domain of separation processes. Indeed, it can be used for concentrating, extracting, separating products, purifying by desalination, pH adjustment and regenerating a salt to acid and base components. This paper reviews the principle of ED, presents various options available and discusses potential applications relevant to the mining and metallurgy industries with economics of some successful industrial applications."

The increase in the number of higher and larger buildings is expected to require the buildings' outer wall maintenance process, which includes cleaning, painting and monitoring, still depends on manpower. In this study, we proposed the robotic building maintenance system and aimed to reduce the jerk effect through the motion control of the system, improve the performance of the maintenance task, and ensure longer life and safety by improving the stability of the building structure and robot system. Through the results of the motion control and field-test with the proposed system, in specific, horizontal sliding module (HSM) showed that the jerk oriented by impact force was significantly reduced, feasibility of the proposed method was verified, and the robotic challenges were explored.

"Extensive deposits of tectonically sheared coal of the Mist Mountain Formation occur in the south eastern Canadian Cordillera. The quality of the coal varies markedly; it is commonly partially oxidized and poor washability characteristics.Oxidation of the sheared coal has been promoted by its fine grain-size and by fractures in adjacent rocks which have facilitated penetration of atmospheric oxygen and circulation of oxygenated waters. Oxidation has resulted in a loss of coking power, a decrease in vitrinite reflectance, and an Increase In oxygen and decrease in carbon content.The relatively low clean coal yields of the sheared coal are primarily the result of the greater volume of mineral matter present, which in turn reflects both the greater susceptibility to shearing of coal with abundant rock partings and the shearing and dissemination throughout the coal of formerly discrete rock partings. The high ash content of some sheared coal seams may be artificial, resulting from the difficulty in distinguishing and separating sheared roof rock and floor strata from the coal seam during mining. There is little variation between the quality of the washed sheared and unsheared coal, with the exception of the somewhat higher ash content of the clean sheared coal compared to clean unsheared coal. This poorer separation of the ash from the organic fraction of the sheared coal is considered to be a product of the large amount of fines present as well as the local formation of aggregates of organic material and ash resulting from plastic flowage of the vitrite and clarite during shearing.IntroductionIn the southeastern Canadian Cordillera, coal seams of the Lower Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Gibson, 1979 were in part sheared and comminuted during Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectonism . Extensive deposits of sheared coal exist, and even in areas of mild deformation the coal may be locally sheared (Bustin, 1979). "The objectives of the Wabush Mines tailings stabilization program are to control dust Ii/t-off and to rehabilitate the disposal area. The evolution of the program started with test plots in 1970, these being continued and expanded upon through 1974. In 1976, a 35-acre vegetation field trial was attempted and failed, part of the failure being attributed to lack of adequate equipment. Subsequently, equipment was purchased and during the summer of 1979-80 extensive areas were treated. The program was also expanded to include the evaluation of chemical and water spray stabilization versus vegetation in areas where shorter-term control is required. In addition, during the summers of 1979-80, spruce bog material was spread over about 100 acres and seeded.The approach to reclamation by vegetation at Wabush is one of soil building. Work to this point indicates that iron ore tailings can be converted to a soil capable of supporting plants. Plans for the Wabush tailings disposal area should make dust lift-off from inactive tailings areas negligible within the next few years."

Laboratory studies had shown that the magnetite contained in serpentine asbestos ore was not uniformly distributed. Ore particles containing chrysotiye fiber responded to a magnetic f field; particles containing little or no chrysotile were essentially non-magnetic. Larger-scale tests, run with a magnetic pulley being fed various asbestos samples ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 5 inches, confirmed that magnetic separation could be used as a concentration step in an asbestos mill. Magnetic concentration was installed at the Black Lake and National mills of Lac d'Amiante du Quebec and has allowed the extraction of lower-grade ore, increasing the life of the mines. In addition, preconcentration early in the flowsheet increased the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section. An increase in fiber production was achieved, as well as a decrease in maintenance costs due to removal of flow-grade tailings early in the flowsheet. Magnetic concentration of a coarse tailings from the mill resulted in recovery of additional fiber previously discarded to tailings.

"This paper provides an overview of the use of uranium and coal in Ontario Hydro's generation program. The dynamics of available supply sources including mining and transportation infrastructures and regional considerations are described. Included is a discussion of needed procurement strategies, both in place and planned, to meet fluctuating fuel requirements while ensuring adequate supply security and cost effectiveness. IntroductionDuring the first half of this century, Ontario Hydro or the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario, as it was then known substantially supplied all of the province's electricity needs from a large number of hydraulic generating stations. Although hydraulic power still provides a very significant part of Ontario energy requirements, this paper will concentrate on the role of uranium and coal in their generation program. To provide a perspective on the importance of these two fuels, Figure I shows the approximate value of each for the past few years in relation to Hydro's total operating costs. The trend toward increasing nuclear output and a corresponding decline in coal use is also clearly illustrated.Figure 2 shows the currently installed capacity of their three main energy sources, hydraulic, nuclear and coal and the 1986 production totals for each, followed by Table I which compares the average operating or running cost on the basis of dollars per megawatt hour for each type of plant. It demonstrates dramatically why Ontario Hydro base load s its hydraulic and nuclear plants, and why coal has become the swing fuel on the system. Although they have a 1200 megawatt plant in Toronto with natural gas-burning capability, and a 2000 megawatt oil-fired station near Kingston, both are presently mothballed and have not been considered in this paper.This paper starts with a user's perspective of the nuclear fuel supply situation which will be discussed in relation to the usual considerations of security, flexibility and cost."

"Grinding ore is an important step in the flotation process. Not only does grinding reduce particle size and liberate minerals, it also creates conditions for reactions to occur on particle surfaces that can aide or inhibit flotation. There have been numerous studies examining various grinding regiments and the effect on flotation pulp chemistry, including autogenous grinding and using media of variable composition. There have been however, few studies looking at the effect of variability in grinding media size on pulp chemistry and subsequent flotation. This study attempts to link changes in pulp chemistry in response to variations in grinding media size to flotation recovery. It uses probes mounted in the grinding chamber (pH, Eh, DO, and conductivity) to monitor pulp chemistry changes during grinding of a Cu-Zn ore. Surface chemistry analysis by ToF-SIMS was performed on sphalerite from the mill discharge. Activator and depressant species were monitored on the mineral surfaces and their presence was evaluated in the context of variability in pulp chemistry linked to differences in grinding media and its ball size.INTRODUCTIONIt has been widely recognised that not only does grinding reduce particle size and liberate minerals but the grinding environment has a large effect on the flotation of sulphide minerals. This effect is attributed to Eh change, iron hydroxide coating on surfaces, oxygen reduction, precipitation from solution and galvanic coupling (Grano, 2009). As early as 1960, it was reported that after grinding the ores in an iron mill the natural floatability of sphalerite was reduced significantly (Rey and Formanek, 1960). Kocabag and Smith (1985) studied on the industrial circuits showing that the depression of sulphides flotation in a steel mill is possibly due to the coating of iron oxidation products. Peng, Grano, Fornasiero, and Ralston (2003a, 2003b) found that iron contamination from grinding media plays a dominant role in depressing galena and chalcopyrite flotation. Huang, Grano, and Skinner (2006) reported the same observation in the flotation of arsenopyrite."

Shebandowan Mine presents a unique opportunity for the mining industry to demonstrate its willingness and ability to use electrical energy effectively. The mine is a typical 250D-ton/day operation supplied by a i5-MVA power transformer. it is a recent, up-to-date design and operates on a four-day/week, two-shift/day basis. The paper outlines an energy profile based on historical data. It accurately describes the individual and total energy input For: (1) production and non-productive junctions; (2) production and down-time periods; (3) peak and average activity levels; and (4) principal energy utilization equipment. A comparison is then made of production data to electrical data, and production and electrical data to design data. The paper concludes that energy management has an important benefit for the mining industry by assisting in maintaining a competitive operation through reduced costs and fewer production slow-downs in the event of energy shortages.

"A microcomputer-controlled multi-probe K-40 monitoring system was developed internally for the Phase II mill at the Lanigan potash mine. The K-40 probes were mounted in a variety of positions in several process streams, ranging from dry ore on a conveyor belt to brines and slurries. A description will be presented of the objectives, the equipment and the difficulties encountered in correlating results.IntroductionThe successful control and optimization of most metallurgical processes involves monitoring not only physical parameters such as flow rate and temperature, but also the chemical compositions of critical streams. Composition has proven difficult to measure on -line in industrial scale processes. However, in potash processing there is a convenient chemical parameter that has long been utilized to measure in situ the concentration of potassium chloride (KCl). Potassium has a long-lived isotope which is slightly radioactive. K40 decays by beta elimination to Ca40, ultimately radiating a characteristic gamma-ray photon. This gamma emission when detected by scintillation counter can be used to estimate the concentration of potassium in a process stream."
