"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

"In an effort to increase productivity, the use of fly ash as a binder for consolidated backfill was studied. From laboratory and underground tests f or its cementitious properties and environmental effects, it was found that a portion of Portland cement could be replaced by the same amount of type ""C"" fly ash to produce an acceptable consolidated rockfill product for use at Kidd Creek.The environmental concerns in terms of dust control and emanation of radon gas were unfounded from measurements. The dust count was comparable to the use of Portland cement only, or with ground blast furnace slag, and the radiation readings were low, averaging one-seventh the regulation level.Since May 1984, a total of over 100 000tonnes of fly ash has been consumed as a binder blended with Portland cement, producing over four million tonnes of consolidated rockfill. To date, the fill in the stopes has performed very satisfactorily, while yielding considerable cost savings.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of base metal sulphide ore annually. The mining method for both No. I and No .2 mines is mainly sub-level blasthole stoping with delayed backfilling.No. 1 mine was developed with a shaft to a depth of 930 m in 1973 to recover the ore between the floor of the open pit at the 216 m horizon, and the 792 m horizon. Stopes are normally 18 m wide, 22 m to 65 m long, with heights varying from 90 m to 135 m. Vertical rib pillars between stopes are typically 24 m wide and sill pillars are 30 m thick.Pillar recovery is implemented after the consolidated rockfill placed in the mined stopes has cured for a period of at least three months. This allows a maximum recovery of the ore with a minimum of dilution, while also maintaining safe working conditions.No. 2 mine was developed from a second shaft, sunk to a depth of 1530 m in 1978, for the recovery of ore beneath the No. I mine. Sub-level stoping in No .2 mine is similar to No.1 mine in methodology, yet differs in sequencing, as no rib pillars are left."

"The need to continually improve efficiency and lower costs in mining operations is of paramount importance to all concerned in the industry. Mining operations are constantly testing new methods and equipment in order to lower costs and improve productivity. Equipment suppliers strive to fulfill the demands of the mines through improved design and innovative ideas for productivity increases. In some cases, however, an increase in productivity does not require new equipment design, but rather the application of an existing mining method into different operating parameters. Such is the case in applying longhole methods to narrow vein ore deposits.Bulk mining methods have long been recognized as efficient, low-cost alternatives in narrow vein operations. Typically, shrinkage and some cut-and-fill methods are employed. The shortfall of these methods is the tendency to be labour intensive. The demand for miners skilled in these methods far outweighs their availability. Consequently, labour-efficient methods have to be employed to fill the void. The application of longhole drilling techniques to narrow vein deposits is one such method.IntroductionPercussion longhole drilling evolved in Canada in the early 1940s. Prior to percussion drilling, blast holes were drilled using diamond drill equipment. Jack Gardner, of Gardner Steel, began testing with carbide percussion bits and extension drill steel in applications where diamond drills had been previously employed. Percussion drilling equipment proved to be considerably more productive and cost-efficient. The experiment eventually led to the replacement of diamond drills in this application.Over the years, the percussion methods were improved, with particular emphasis on the equipment used. Rifle bar rotation machines evolved to independent rotation. Bar and arm set ups evolved into self-contained mobile drill carriers that increased productivity while reducing the physical labour. The introduction of hydraulics further improved efficiency and production figures. Today, it is not uncommon to see fully computerized jumbos in production longhole drilling applications. These machines represent the ""state-of-the-art"" in longhole drilling equipment.Production longhole drilling is considered to be one of the most efficient bulk mining methods in use today. Production statistics normally exhibit low-cost, efficient ore extraction. As a rule, longhole (blasthole) methods are associated with substantial ore deposits. These methods have exhibited high production figures and low mining costs.Over the past decade, long hole methods have been applied to several narrow vein deposits. These applications have proven that, given the right parameters, longhole methods will produce the same advantages in narrow vein deposits as are seen in more conventional applications."

"During the early part of the 1980s, four new surface coal mines commenced operation in the Province of British Columbia. Each represented a major investment in both persons and materials in order to protect this investment in one significant area-the fixed portion of the surface coal handling system-a substantial amount of work was undertaken to ensure that the system was well protected from an outbreak of fire. A great deal of effort in this field had already been made by those coal mines which had been in operation for a number of years and experience gained at these operations was utilized in determining the level and extent of fire protection for the new mines.This paper summarizes the major problems, and suggests some of the methods of solution, in providing an adequate degree of fire protection for surface coal handling systems. It will also discuss the potential for gas and dust explosions together with ways to minimize this potential.The Fixed Coal Handling SystemNote: The word ""fixed"" has been used in its present context to denote that part of the coal handling system where the coal is moved via fixed installations such as a conveyor. It differentiates from that part of the system where coal is moved by mobile equipment.The raw coal delivered to the truck dump will undergo two major processes on its way to the rail load out. The first will be at the coal preparation plant where coal of specified quality will be extracted from the raw feed to the plant. If this coal is of metallurgical quality, and sometimes if it is of thermal quality, it will pass through a thermal dryer where part of the moisture acquired during coal preparation will be removed, i.e. the second process. As the complexity of both the coal preparation plant and the thermal dryer is such as to warrant separate considerations they will not form part of this paper. Each of the processes, however, is generally, housed in its own building, thus, containment of any hazards is usually more attainable than those existing or caused in the rest of the system."

"Eight volcanogenic massive sulphide districts in Canada and Japan, ranging in age from Archean to Miocene, were selected for analysis. The study revealed that: {I) each district has an average diameter of 32 km; (2) the districts contain 4 to 20 deposits each, with an average of /2 deposits; (3) the average total base metal content per district is 4.6 million tonnes, with a coefficient of variation of32%; (4) ranked in order of size, the largest deposit in each district contains, on average, 67% of the total metal and the second largest about 13 %. The remaining deposits range downward in decreasing proportions. Empirical observations such as these may be used f or evaluating the undiscovered potential of new districts as well as contributing to a better understanding of the distribution and genesis of this important class of base metal deposits. Previous WorkThe characteristic geological features o f volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits have been described by numerous authors over the past fifteen years and it is now widely accepted that these deposits comprise a major ""deposit-type."" In addition to these geological parameters, however, it is now becoming apparent that volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits show several distinctive grade-tonnage relationships. For example, Singer et al. (1975) demonstrated a slight negative correlation between copper grade and ore tonnage in their sampling of 146 volcanogenic deposits. In a study of 110 Canadian Precambrian deposits of this type, Boldy (1977) showed that the size of the modal deposit is 0.39 million tons, that of the median deposit is 1.40 million tons and the arithmetic average is 6.85 million tons. Moreover, Boldy's data show that the average grade of combined base metals (Cu + Zn + Pb) for each of the se three deposit-sizes is, respectively, 6.25%, 5.35% and 6.47%. Because the lead content of Canadian Precambrian volcanogeni c deposits is most frequently less than 1%, the total metal grade is effectively Cu + Zn . From Figure 2 in Bold y (1977), it can be seen that 83% of the deposits fall in the range of 0.l to 10 million tons ."

"No Canadian or his family is likely to escape the effects of proposals for pension reform tabled on October 9, 1986 by Finance Minster Michael Wilson. New tax rules are proposed for Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), company pensions, and other forms of retirement plans. Draft legislation is expected to be released in the first half of 1987.IntroductionOver two years ago on February, 15, 1984, Mark Lalonde, then Finance Minister, tabled two White Papers. The first, Action Plan for Pension Reform, proposed improvements to the public pension system and increases in the minimum pension benefits standards to be mandated by the federal government. Since then changes have been made to the Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Canada Pension Plan programs. Also, benefits provided under pension plans subject to the federal Pension Benefits Standards Act have been improved significantly.The companion paper, Building Better Pensions f or Canadians, proposed to standardize and, in many cases, improve retirement savings through private plans by revising the tax rule s. The tax proposals in the Notice of Ways and Means released by Finance Minister Wilson on October 9. 1986 implement, with modifications, the tax treatment of retirement savings originally proposed in the May 1985 budget in response to that second paper."

"Selected methods of pressure loss predictions in horizontal slurry flow in pipelines are presented. For a given combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, the slurry and its flow conditions are described, and an appropriate method of pressure loss prediction is outlined. The wide range of conditions treated in this paper may be found in practice in areas varying from the hydraulic transport of low concentration slurries to dense-phase conveying of paste backfill in underground mines.IntroductionThe hydraulic conveying of solid particles in pipelines is a major component of the mining and mineral processing industry. Whether the objective is to transport ore to the processing plant or to make use of mill tailing as backfill material; the need for well designed, economical hydraulic conveying systems is recognized.The contribution of this paper is part of an on-going research program at McGill University involved in optimizing and developing techniques for total mine waste disposal. One of the main concerns in the conveying of solid-liquid mixtures is the prior knowledge of the pumping power input required. This energy requirement is directly proportional to the pressure losses incurred in the pipeline system. Understanding the sources of such pressure losses and predicting their magnitudes should enable the system designer to make informed decisions regarding the optimum mode of hydraulic transportation commensurate with the over-all requirements of the operation.This paper is an attempt to classify pressure loss prediction methods encountered in the literature for solid-liquid mixtures. In spite of the large number of publications spanning thirty years of research in the field of slurry transportation, it is sometimes difficult to correctly identify the appropriate methods applicable to a given situation. This is partly due to the inherent complexity of the mechanics of slurry flow and the ensuing uncertainty about the nature of the flow regime under investigation.Our approach is to use three fundamental parameters, namely: flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size (for solid particles with a given density) to characterize the slurry and the flow conditions, and to match them with an adequate pressure loss prediction method. For each combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, a description of the most likely prevalent flow conditions and some known methods of dealing with them will be presented. Qualitative definitions of ""high"" and ""low"" magnitudes of the aforementioned parameters will be given as a general guide to the classification scheme presented in this paper."

"This paper describes the Sasol coal liquefaction process, as used in South Africa. It covers coal supply, coal gasification, gas purification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the major utility systems involved and the economics of the process.IntroductionThe Sasol coal liquefaction process is based on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which are in turn obtained by gasification of coal with steam and oxygen. The process is shown schematically in Figure I.The first step in the process is coal preparation, in which the coal is crushed and screened to a 3-50 mm size for gasification on one side and to -3 mm size for steam and power production on the other. Oxygen needed for coal gasificatoin is produced in the air separation plant.Coal is gasified under pressure by steam and oxygen in the Lurgi gasification plant, where raw, impure gas is produced . The raw gas is first washed in a scrubber with a circulating gas liquor, heat is then recovered from it in a waste heat recovery boiler and the gas is further cooled for purification. Water-insoluble materials (tar oils) in the gas liquor are separated from aqueous solution and sent to tar refining for the recovery of tar products. The aqueous portion of the gas liquor goes to a Phenosolvan solvent extraction process, where phenols and ammonia are recovered. Water then proceeds to the effluent treatment plant.The scrubbed and cooled raw gas goes to a Rectisol gas purification plant, where all components other than hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane are removed as completely as possible by absorption in refrigerated methanol. The acid gases (CO2, H2S) stripped from the methanol in the Rectisol unit are processed in a Stretford plant for recovery of sulphur. Regenerated methanol is returned to the process. The purified synthesis gas is passed to the fluidized-bed Synthol reactors, where Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions take place.The synthesis products are recovered in a product recovery unit as separate streams of decant oil containing higher-molecular- weight hydrocarbons, light oil comprised of lower-molecular- weight species, the aqueous stream containing water solubles, a C3/C4 stream, a C2 stream , a methane stream and a hydrogen-rich stream. Most of the hydrogen is recycled to the Synthol reactors; a major portion of the methane is reformed to hydrogen and carbon monoxide for recycle; the C2 fraction goes to an ethylene plant; and liquid streams proceed to the product refinery.The product refinery is used to upgrade and purify the Synthol products to specification fuels and chemicals.Sasol l, the first coal liquefaction plant in South Africa , was built in 1955. It is still operating and has a product output of about half a million tonnes per year. The Sasol II plant is in a commissioning stage and will be in full operation in 1981. It is about five times the size of Sasoll. It uses over 12 million tonnes of coal and produces more than 2 million tonnes of saleable products annually (1,2,3). The Sasol llI plant, which is a mirror image of Sasol II, is under construction and scheduled for completion in 1983."

"The Kiruna Electric System is an all electric ramp haulage system developed for underground mining. This electric truck haulage system is currently operating on three continents. This paper will review the technology of the system, existing installations as well as the economical benefits to the mining industry. The system was designed and developed to extend and exploit the economical advantages of ramp haulage. Performance information is provided. IntroductionThe Kiruna Electric System has been the subject of a number of technical papers over the past sever al years. During that period, the content of the presentations has changed from concept and theory to prototype testing to description of installed and operating systems.The intent of this paper is threefold:1. to present a brief review of the technical features of the Kiruna Electric Systems;2. to review the existing installations with performance data; and3. to provide a description of on-going developments within the Kiruna Electric Program during 1991.The Kiruna Electric is a high capacity ramp haulage system for underground mining operations due to an All-Electric Drive System, including two heavy duty electric traction motors. "Cluff Mining has successfully operated a gold recovery plant at its Cluff Lake operation in northern Saskatchewan to recover gold f rom Phase 1 uranium leach tailings. The operating circuit consists of tailings repulping, grinding, cyanidation, carbon-inpulp, gold recov ery, and cyanide destruction by acidification, volatilization and re-neutralization. The process is described and operating data and metallurgical results from the operation are provided.INTRODUCTIONCluff Mining, a Saskatchewan partnership, is owned 20 per cent by Cameco and 80 per cent by Amok Ltd. /Ltée. (Amok), manager and operator of the partnership.The current operation includes the Phase II uranium mining and milling facilities, located at Cluff Lake, 700 km north of Saskatoon, capable of processing 300 000 tonnes o f ore to produce about 4 000 000 lb UPs (1500 tonnes of uranium) per year.The Phase I operation was initially established to process the very high grade ""0"" uranium orebody from 1980 to 1983. The leach tailings from the Phase I mill operation were found to contain elevated level s of gold . These high gold values were partially due to the gravity pre-concentration step included in the uranium recovery circuit, and to the naturally high levels of gold associated with the uranium mineralization in the""0"" orebody .During the Phase I operation some 6475 tonnes of leach tails were produced and stored in a total o f 2916 large concrete containers (vaults). This method of storage was, at the time, deemed to be the preferred method of temporary storage for the tailings.This temporary storage of high-grade gold tailings facilitated the reclamation and reprocessing of the leach tail s for gold recovery. The primary reason for reprocessing the Phase 1 leach tails was to provide for long-term permanent disposal of the material as an admixture with Phase II tailings in the Cluff Lake tailings disposal area. Although there was limited tonnage, the high gold content in the material made the in stallation of a gold recovery circuit economically justifiable."

"This report describes the development and effective use of shaped charges as part of the Elliot Lake Mine Roof Stability Project to remotely remove the heads from roof bolts. With a slight modification, these same shaped charges are being recommended f or use to the Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited (Mining Division), to cut steel cable bolts.IntroductionThe Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) often receives requests to cooperate in solving problems encountered in private industry or other sectors of the government. CERL is equipped to design and test explosive and pyrotechnic devices and the policy is to treat each case individually.The first case reported evolved from a request from a sister laboratory at Elliot Lake. The intent was to remotely remove the head s of roof bolts as part of a mine roof stability project. The device designed for this use was 1000,70 effective in the laboratory and 80% effective in the mine.The second case reported results from a request from a private mining company knowledgeable of the Elliot Lake Project. Their requirement was to remotely cut cable bolts. This request was first treated as presenting a new problem. The solution, however, proved to be very similar to the former."

"The concept of geometallurgy has been extensively mentioned and used in the mining industry in the past years. However, each mining firm has a different understanding of what geometallurgy means, and its actual value varies significantly from site to site. Even in the case of properly constructed geometallurgical models, it is fairly common to observe a sub-utilization of the model in the actual operation, because of its low production forecasting capability on the short term. This disconnect between the geometallurgical model and operations is typically caused by a lack of tuning between the original model and the actual plant operation. Also, the absence of procedures and other standards for reconciliation, affects the confidence and the predictive quality of the model. The geometallurgical model should consist of three different levels: (I) adequate capture of information, (II) data analysis and modelling, and (III) development of the block model. Once the geometallurgical in-situ model is finalized, a process model should be developed of the plant at industrial scale, in order to scale up the in-situ geometallurgical parameters from their base or standard condition, to the actual operating reality of the plant. Finally, the stage of reconciliation will close this process, assuring that any deviation between the geometallurgical model and the actual plant operation is not due to lack of tuning, but due to operational issues such as unattended maintenance requirements or poor process control in the operation. The methodology as described in this paper has been applied at several large mining sites in Chile. The paper presents the characteristics of the proposed methodology, and quantitatively describes its benefits with examples from actual operations.INTRODUCTIONIt probably is fair to say that geometallurgy became widely used in greenfield projects in the Andes region during the mining boom of the 90’s, when massive orebodies were studied and developed, and upfront metallurgical characterisation proved its use for accurate economic evaluation including estimates of plant throughput, energy consumption, final product quality and overall recovery. A few examples of such greenfield studies for concentrator plants in the 90’s are Minera Los Pelambres (Antofagasta Minerals, Chile), Minera Escondida, Laguna Seca (BHP Billiton, Chile), and Rio Blanco (then Montterrico Metals, Peru). Large size hydrometallurgical operations such as Cerro Colorado, Quebrada Blanca and Lomas Bayas (all in Chile), also recognised early on the importance and value of relating ore mineralogy, geological characterisation and metallurgical behaviour."

"All optimum pit design studies start from the geological are reserves inventory, the estimated grades of all blocks of potential are within the interpreted limits of the deposit. The actual optimization procedure is then carried out on block valuations based on these estimated grades. Thus, the relevance of any pit design can be seen to depend directly on the ore reserve estimation . To insure a proper pit design, a first step would be to use a geostatistical reserve estimation technique such as kriging, however, this is not enough. A frequently neglected fact is that the blocks of ore estimated during the planning stage of the mine are usually considerably larger than those on which the ore-waste selection will be made at the time of mining. Experience in the exploitation of large low-grade deposits has shown that large blocks, estimated to be are, when mined selectively in smaller blocks, often yield significant amounts of waste material. This phenomenon, known as internal waste, is a function of the variability of the grades, the size of mining unit and the amount of sampling information on which ore-waste decisions are made.In this study, it was proposed to consider the effect of internal waste caused by selective mining, on. pit design, using geostatistical methods to predict the tonnage and grade of recoverable reserves within large blocks.Optimum pits obtained using a block valuation formula taking into account the recoverable reserves within large blocks were compared with optimum pits obtained using a conventional block valuation formula. It was found that the optimum pits obtained by the proposed method had the highest total valuations and thus were, in fact, ""more optimum”. These pits were characterized by greater are tonnages at a lower average grade, the additional ore more than compensating for the drop in grade. It was also found that the consideration of internal waste in pit design could considerably alter pit limits in marginal areas of the deposit.It was concluded that selective mining had a significant, potentially critical, impact on the design of optimum pits especially in the case of large low-grade deposits."

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

"Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. "Paramount to sound aggregate resource management is an awareness of what resources exist. For the past six years, New Brunswick has been conducting granular aggregate resource inventories in and around urban centres as a means of documenting, both qualitatively and quantitatively, these resources.These aggregate studies require extensive ground truthing due to the often small nature of the surficial feature s as well as extensive foliage. Approximately 35% of the province's land mass has been mapped at a 1:50,000 scale as part of this on-going program. Reports are published annually and include data on size analysis, lithology soundness, abrasion and absorption.Aggregate deposits in New Brunswick frequently reflect the local bedrock lithology and, whereas much of New Brunswick is underlain by soft, friable sandstone of Pennsylvanian age, it is necessary to transport aggregate for higher-specification use considerable distances. Alternatively, the construction industry must turn to crushed stone as a source of asphaltic or concrete aggregate.Over 40% of New Brunswick's land mass is owned by the Crown, and aggregate resources are managed under the Quarriable Substances Act. "Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

The demand for nickel is continuing to exceed inventories, and producers are working vigorously to increase capacity. Many nickel processes utilize the fluidized bed technology for its fast heat and mass transfer, excellent temperature control and low maintenance. The following four nickel applications of the fluidized bed technology have been commercialized: I) Sulfide ore roasting; II) Nickel sulfide (matte) roasting; III) Nickel oxide reduction; IV) Nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. This paper examines the issues surrounding the application of fluidization technology to the above processes, from the stand point of the engineer modeling the process and designing the key equipment, based on the historical success stories and the fundamental principles of flow sheet synthesis. Using the available data in open literature, typical flow diagrams (with convenient bases of 1 t/h feed or product) are developed to illustrate the relative flow rates and to highlight the key features of each application. In addition, some historical background information is provided for each process with supplemental notes with regards to our company's involvements.

The company's operating environment and ""interim strategy"" from 1975 to 1980 will be described. The discussion will cover an environmental forecast and define the company's"" strategy for survival"" for the balance of this century.IntroductionIn December last year, I was asked to deliver a pa per for the management lecture series a t the Asian Institute of Management in Manila. The paper was entitled "" The 1970's: A Decade of Disaster For New Mining Projects"" . In that paper, it was my task to review the results of new mining projects in the Philippines during the previous decade. The task was not a happy one, for the results themselves were not only unhappy, but disastrous on a scale unprecedented in Philippine history. Out of a total of 17 major mining project s involving an aggregate capital investment in excess o f US $2 billion during the 1970s, only three project s have been profitable, and all the rest have either gone "" belly up"" or are teetering on the very edge of financial disaster.It is in the context of this shocking record of widespread financial dislocation in the Philippine mining industry, (which in varying degrees appears to have been paralleled in virtually every other country in the world where mining is an important sector of the economy) that I address myself tonight to the theme of this symposium. My paper is entitled ""Risk Management Strategy in Mining"" and it is sub titled ""Can Benguet Corporation Survive to Celebrate its Centennial in 2003?"". I have inserted the word ""Strategy"" and added the subtitle, because I wish to make it clear first, that my presentation to you tonight will be focused exclusively on the strategic aspect s of risk management, and second that I will limit myself to Benguet's own ""in-house"" experience and perspectives on this subject.
