During this, the Centennial year of the discovery of the Hall-Heroult process, it seems appropriate to review some of the developments which have taken place in Canada and to explain why it has become an important world centre for the production of primary aluminum. For many years after it was recognized that the element aluminum existed, scientists were frustrated in their efforts to isolate it. In the early 1800s H. C. Oersted and Frederick Woehler prepared small quantities sufficient to measure some of the physical properties. A quasi-commercial process involving reduction with metallic sodium was developed by the French scientist H. St. Claire Deville in 1855 but the cost was very high ($30. 00 per kg). It was not until 1886 that Charles Martin Hall in the United States and P.L.T. Heroult in France, more or less simultaneously but completely independently, discovered the process which is essentially that in use today. Some of the early pioneers in the industry quickly recognized the potential of the hydro-electric resources in Canada as economic energy suppliers for aluminum production. The first commercial production in Canada was in Shawinigan, Quebec in 1901, only 15 years after the process was discovered. Subsequently operating plants were established at nine different locations in Canada (Quebec and British Columbia) (Table 1). Operations continue today in all locations except one (La Tuque). The table shows present plant capacity which for the older plants was reached in an evolutionary manner including replacement of obsolete capacity or upgrading and modernization of existing designs.

Old iron nails are one of the most common objects which entice the general public to ask questions about the history of metallurgy. There is a lot of history in old nails - history of the manufacturing industry, and social and economic history. Nails, therefore, are fine teaching tools; whether students have to acquire metallurgical skills or explore the structure and properties of wrought iron, whether they want to look into the history of inventions and the development of machinery, studying nails tells a story better than any teacher or any book. I have used this approach often and the following note is based on several student projects, particularly the work of Carmina Herrero and Vicky Marchant. Nails, those essential metallic fasteners, have long been with us. Their size, shape and design is basically a compromise between the makers' ability to control and manipulate material and the demands of the intended application. There were copper and bronze nails in antiquity, but in this paper I want to deal only with iron nails. In Rome, iron nails were common, and Cleere carried out the fine metallographic investigations on a large stock of nails recovered from a Roman fort site in Scotland. Those nails were hand forged; sorting them at the site on the basis of length, shape of head and shape of shank (in cross section) indicated that there seemed to have been some nail standardization. It appears that the Roman smiths used a series of heading dies starting with a 1/s-in. size. Each successive size increased by approximately 1/16-in. The metallographic inspection of the microstructures of the nails showed that the smaller nails were made in the one operation; i.e. both the tapering and the formation were accomplished on the heated rod without reheating. However, in the case of the larger nails, the nail had to be reheated for the tapering after the head had been forged. Most nails were tapered on all four sides of the shank and the shanks were square in cross section; only one group had rounded shanks. Most heads were flat disks, but in one group the heads were pyramids and another group had conic heads. Figure 1 shows the procedure used to produce the pyramidal heads. Obviously, Roman nail making was sophisticated and each nail design was meant for a particular use.

"In 1960, with the opening of the Chisel Lake mine near Snow Lake, Manitoba, the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, commenced a new phase in their mining operation -that of bringing ore to Flin Flon over 100 miles of railroad.The schedule of operations required to accomplish this, together with an outline of some of the problems of handling ore at 40° and 50,0 below zero, are discussed. The facilities required to thaw and unload from twenty to fifty cars per working day are also described."

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. Extractive metallurgy is concerned with the winning of metals from their ores and concentrates. It is therefore not unexpected that extractive metallurgy in Canada has always been closely linked with mining. The discovery and exploitation of new orebodies has provided the impetus for the building of many of our smelters and refineries - past and present - and for the development of new metal extraction processes. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of those early metallurgical developments, and to highlight the continuing expansion and diversification of the Canadian metallurgical industry.

"Place Dome Canada's Detour Lake Mine is a low-grade gold producer located in northeastern Ontario. Production is targeted for 2850 tonnes of ore per day. As reserves and mining areas continued to be found below and far to the west of the shaft (Fig. 1), it became necessary to review and upgrade the materials handling facilities. This paper deals with the selection, design and construction of an underground crusher and conveyor system capable of handling up to 450 tonnes per hour from the lowest existing level in the mine.BackgroundThe Detour Lake mine site is accessed via secondary Highway 652 which runs northeast out of Cochrane, Ontario. The road consists of 200 Ian of hard top followed by 100 Ian of well maintained gravel to the mine site. A 1500 m airstrip is maintained at the mine site for emergency use. Prior to 1991, the workforce was flown to and from the mine site. Crews were now bused to the site from Timmins. Remnants of a winter road exist to the southeast which at one time ended in La Sarre, Quebec. This was the route used to haul bulk items during the construction period and early production years.A town site has not been established at the site for the current operations. Instead, a rotational scheme is being utilized whereby most personnel will work seven days on site followed by seven days off site. For some employees, however, the work week is termed as a four/three schedule where they work 42 hours between Monday at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with the following three days off. All surface employees and maintenance employees underground work 12-hour shifts. All underground employees work a lOV2-hour shift. Supervisors work a similar schedule as their crews, however, other staff may overlap their rotation during the week.A five-compartment shaft was sunk in 1984 from surface to the 610 m elevation. Shaft stations were established at the 120 m, 260 m, 360 m, 460 m, and 560 m levels. The cage compartment consists of a single deck, 4O-man cage in balance with a counterweight. The cage hoist is an Ingersoll-Rand 10H and is regulated to travel at 4.1 m/s. Two 9 t skips operate in balance at a travel speed of 7.1 mls. The skip hoist is a 3.05 m drum Nordberg. Both hoists are automated to function without a hoistman during normal skipping and cage service runs."

"I ASSUME that any effort on my part to deal with the question of the importance of the mining industry is going to be largely an exercise in preaching to the converted, but there are one or two aspects that I'd like to particularly mention.The first is that, in terms of almost all factors, the mining industry is a very important industry in Canada. It is important in terms of employment in relation to the gross national product of Canada and it is particularly important in the international trade of Canada. So far from being insignificant domestically, it is also an extremely important factor in the international picture. That's an important point to bear in mind, because as we talk about all the other matters we never can lose sight of the fact that mining management always has to be conscious of its international competitive position. It is something that one forgets at one's peril, and to a somewhat greater extent than is true of many other industries, those managements have to compete in an international context for their markets, to some extent for their people for specialized skills and of course for finance. In the evolution of domestic policies it is a very, very perilous step to take to impair that competitive ability of the domestic mining industry."

We could enlarge or reduce it depending on the current in-put.D. Doyle Then chemically bound material we might not see. If you are restricted to 1 micron then you would not be able to separate things smaller than this. Is this not so?Reply We won't be able to analyse it but we will see it as the scanning electron microscope has a resolution down to about 0.1 microns. We should be able to get the general composition of such a grain plus its surrounding grains. We feel we can then make a reasonable estimate if it were as small as 0.1 microns. The hydraulic air compressor (HAC) is driven only by water, held up by a dam, to create relatively low head (typically 10-20 metres), such that the developed hydropower is used to cause flow in openings deeper underground. Air is entrained in the water at the inlet to the sub-surface openings (an air to water volume ratio of 1:1 is reported to be optimal) and is compressed as it is carried along by the deepening water flow. At depth, and with lower water velocities arising from larger cross sectional area tunnels, air bubbles separate out of the water flow and are collected in a receiver space above the flowing water. Water, free of air, then passes back up a return shaft (up-pipe) and rejoins the river or stream flow. In principle, an HAC can produce any pressure and flow rate required, given large enough shafts and enough water supply with head sufficient to overcome frictional resistance in the sub-surface tunnels. Practically, as air solubility in water increases with pressure, HAC installations with depths greater than 100 metres may lead to higher rates of compressed air loss, without special separation measures. A modern HAC application for mine refrigeration and cooling is presented.

"Bayan Obo mixed RE concentrate is the largest RE source in the world. RE elements occur dominantly in bastnaesite and monazite. This paper describes a clean and green technique for processing Bayan Obo mixed rare earth (RE) concentrate. A two-step oxidation method can lead to the effective recovery of REs, thorium (Th), fluorine (F) and phosphorus (P). Ce has a property of valency change, enabling the separation of it from other RE(III) elements. Making use of the interactions of cerium (IV) (Ce(IV)), F and P, a new extraction system was created to separate Ce(IV) effectively from other RE(III) while recovering F, P and Th by complexing F and P following the oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV). The method includes two parts. Firstly, bastnaesite is oxidized by air roasting and sulfuric acid leaching. And then a first leach liquor containing Ce(IV), F and P is obtained. Secondly, monazite was converted into REhydroxide through alkaline attack and then Ce(III) in the RE-hydroxide was oxidized into Ce(IV) by wetair oxidation. After sulfuric acid leaching the oxidized RE-hydroxide, a second leach liquor is obtained. The two parts of leach liquor containing Ce(IV), F and P are then extracted by Cyanex923 to obtain CeO2, CeF3 and CePO4 based on the complex of Ce(IV) with F and P. The raffinate was further extracted by the primary amine N1923, and Th-product was recovered as ThO2. The RE elements recovery yield during the whole process is greater than 92%. The new technique not only provides a new way for Bayan Obo RE ore utilization, but also avoids resource waste and environment pollution.INTRODUCTIONRare Earths (REs) refer to lanthanides, including scandium and yttrium. Owing to the similar structure and property of RE(III), it is difficult to separate them from each other, especially for the adjacent elements. According to the United States Geological Survey, in 2010, the whole world has about 142 million tonnes of rare earth reserves. In that, China ranks the second with 22% following Brazil which ranks first with 32% (Cheng, 2011). There are three main RE ore types in China with about 80% mixed ores in Bayan Obo, 10% bastnaesite ores in SiChuan and ShanDong province and 2.9% ion adsorption ores in Southern China. Bayan Obo mixed RE concentrate consists of bastnaesite and monazite. The concentrate contains CeO2/_REO of 50% and there are 7–8% F, 4-6% P and 0.2–0.3% Th."

"Treatment of oxide, e.g. roasted gold ores has received relatively less attention than sulphidic ones and recently, handling of oxide gold ores is becoming essential. In this study, the influence of roasted gold ore (RGO) slurry (at 35% solid ratio) on the electrochemical dissolution of gold has been examined using pure gold and iron oxide minerals (hematite, maghemite, and magnetite) as disc electrodes by zeroresistance ammeter mode either in one or two separate containers. The presence of slurry decreased galvanic currents, i.e. corrosion rates due to the release and increase in the amount of soluble and/or insoluble species that could retard further the anodic behaviour of gold. Higher galvanic currents were observed in two separate containers than that in one container indicating the primary importance of galvanic interactions. SEM-EDS results observed iron hydro/oxide coatings on gold surface in case of magnetite test. However, in case of RGO electrode it is not a perfect passivation, although somewhat decreasing trend was observed on gold dissolution. These findings have revealed that passivation is not only a laboratory phenomenon, but also it could be responsible for the slowdown of gold dissolution in industrial practice.INTRODUCTIONThe cyanidation of gold is an electrochemical corrosion process thus; the dissolution of gold can readily be studied by electrochemical techniques. The outcome/summary of previous electrochemical studies of gold leaching can partially be summarized as follows: Filmer (1982) and Lorenzen and van Deventer (1992) reported the negative effect of pyrite and pyrrhotite on gold leaching due to the galvanic interactions; Aghamirian and Yen (2005) studied gold galvanic corrosion in presence of sulphide mineral electrodes only in one cell using zero-resistance ammeter (ZRA) mode; Dai and Jeffrey (2006) discussed, individually, the anodic and cathodic behaviours between gold and sulphide minerals, and Azizi et al. (2010, 2011) used a bed reactor to examine the influence of sulphide minerals on gold dissolution in one and two separate cells. Accordingly, a slowdown in gold leaching has generally been attributed to the passivation phenomenon, although the indication of this phenomenon is still an undergoing debate. For instance, Mrkusic and Paynter (1970) identified the passivation as the film formation of dissolved species from calcine, Crundwell (2014) explained passivation, in the case of corrosion of metals, as the formation of a layer which is composed of a new chemical species on the mineral surface and this layer inhibits or blocks further reactions. He suggested that passivation is related to the oxidation of the metal, and the formation of a passive layer that retards the rate of dissolution by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, galvanic interactions, passivation phenomena, or combinations of them are considered significant electrochemical factors affecting gold dissolution (van Deventer, Reuter, Lorenzen, & Hoff, 1990; Azizi, Petre, & Larachi, 2012). It is important to note that generalizing the influence of a mineral/metal on gold dissolution may not be correct in all cases, since contrary behaviours/results (for pyrite) have been observed (Aghamirian & Yen, 2005). Therefore, electrochemical study of gold is still a subject of research and need to be examined further in detail."

Commercial production of barite commenced in British Columbia in 1940; shipments have been recorded from ten deposits, of which four are particularly significant: The Brisco, Silver Giant, Parson, and Mineral King mines. Parr of the barite production is a by-product of base metal deposits in which barite is a major gangue mineral. About one hundred occurrences are known. COMMERCIAL production of barite in British Columbia dates back to 1940. Production volumes rose and fell and reached 39,900 tonnes in 1972. The main producer is Mountain Minerals Limited . There are two principal areas of barite deposits in British Columbia: ( I) The southeast part of the province along the Rocky Mountain Trench , which is the source of all production to date. (2) Stratabound occurrences in northeast British Columbia in the Gataga-Ketchika rivers and Muncho Lake areas which are not yet developed. Of the approximately one hundred reported barite occurrences, only ten have recorded commercial shipments, some of insignificant amount. So far, four deposits have proved to be important producers: Brisco, Silver Giant, Parson and Mineral King. The Mineral King property is situated near the confluence of Toby and Jumbo Creeks, 35 km southwest of lnvermere. The lead-zinc-copper-iron-barite deposits, as described by Fyles (1959, 1962), replace Proterozoic Mount Nelson dolomites of the Purcell system on the limb in the trough of a complex, tight syncline. The mine operated from 1954 to 1967 and 2,097,900 tonnes of baritic ore that was processed for base metal concentrates and also produced 22,680 tonnes of by-product barite. Since 1970, some 136,000 tonnes of barite have been recovered from the old tailings pond. The deposit is now considered depleted. The Silver Giant mine is located 10 km northwest of Spillimacheen. Barite and lead-zinc sulphides replace Cambrian Jubilee limestone near their contact with the overlying Ordovician McKay slate. Mineralization is located in the nose of an overturned plunging anticline. Between 1951 and 1957 800,000 tonnes of baritic ore were processed for lead and zinc concentrate. After 1959 barite was also produced , first from open pit, and later from reworked tailings. Up to 1979 production of barite totalled approximately 180,000 tonnes. Two other producing mines in the area are descri bed by G.R. Manson (this volume). Large, bedded stratabound barite deposits are reported from northeastern British Columbia. Six major shale-hosted Industrial Minerals in Canada lead-zinc-barite occurrences are known in the Devonian Gunsteel Formation. These are: Driftpi le Creek, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Pie, Fluke and Elf. In addition, numerous occurrences of strati form blebby or nodular barite and locally massive white crystalline barite are known from the Driftpi le Creek and Ak ie River districts in Gunsteel shale and from the Kechika, Road River and Ware map areas from Silurian siltstone . The size of these deposits is impressive; the baritic horizon at Mount Alcock is reported to be 25 to 30 m thick , and dri ll ing results from the Cirque deposit indicate reserves of 30 mi llion tonnes of baritic lead-zi nc-si lver ore. Similar bedded barite deposits are also reported from Midway area, near the Yukon border.

Historically, there has been little incentive to process copper-arsenic concentrates by leaching, rather than via established smelting operations. However, with ever tightening environmental emission standards and more arseniferous concentrates being produced, increasingly sophisticated and upgraded off- gas handling facilities are required in smelting operations, generating greater quantities of challenging metallurgical dust. In this context, oxidative pressure leaching offers distinct advantages. The current state of pressure leach technology delivers high extractions from copper concentrates, while producing an environmentally stable process residue, without atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide or arsenic. However, as was shown in an earlier study, copper extractions and environmental leach residue stability are impacted negatively by arsenic levels above 2.5 to 3.0 wt%. In further studies on pressure leaching of copper concentrates, Sherritt has developed process conditions that allow even highly arseniferous (> 7 wt% As) feed materials to be converted into environmentally stable residues, with excellent copper extractions. At the same time, pressure leach residues can be generated that are amenable to silver recovery via direct cyanidation, without pre-treatment by lime boiling or hot curing. The results of pilot plant test work are discussed. INTRODUCTION As the production of copper has expanded over the years, resource exploitation has extended beyond relatively clean, high grade and easily accessible ores, and copper sulphide concentrates increasingly come with higher levels of contaminants, such as As, Hg, Sb and Bi, and lower copper and sulphide sulphur concentrations. However, as concerns on the impact of the emission of such contaminants into the natural environment have mounted, import/export restrictions have made the trading of copper concentrate more difficult, and, in particular, the export of concentrates with greater than 0.5 wt% As; under ever tightening environmental emission standards, these lower quality concentrates can be a significant strain on the off-gas handling facilities in smelting operations. The processing of arsenic bearing copper concentrates is, therefore, an increasing challenge as copper producers seek to exploit more complex mineralization and to extend the life of their operations. In this environment, processing arsenical copper concentrates with high temperature pressure leaching (>200°C) must be considered as an alternative to pyrometallurgical processing. Leaching kinetics for copper minerals at these temperatures are rapid and acid is generated for potential use in heap leach operations. Pressure leaching of copper concentrates eliminates gaseous emissions of arsenic and sulphur, while generating environmentally stable residues, as measured by the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP) (Kalanchey et al., 2007). Both medium and high temperature pressure leaching of copper concentrates have also proven themselves technically on an industrial scale (Marsden et al., 2004) with high copper recoveries.

This paper investigated the synergistic effect in the slurry-erosion process of carbon steel. In line with the mechanisms of material loss, the synergism due to interaction of erosion and corrosion was divided into the corrosion enhanced by erosion and erosion enhanced by corrosion. The erosion-corrosion tests were conducted with A1045 steel in slurries containing silica sand. Experimental results showed that the rotating of the sample in corrosive media raised both OCP and corrosion rate, but the impingement of solid particles did not affect the corrosion current significantly. In the quiescent solutions, the Faraday's law gave a good prediction for the weight loss caused by corrosion but for rotating samples, the weight loss experimentally measured was virtually greater than that predicted by the Faraday's law, indicating that the corrosion-enhanced erosion could occur in corrosive fluids in absence of solid particles. A half-logarithm relationship was observed between the weight loss due to corrosion-enhanced erosion and the anodic current density.

YOU have been kind enough to ask me to speak to you on "The War and Anglo-American Relations." A speaker always takes the liberty of putting his own interpretation on the scope of his subject. I am going to exercise that privilege, and try to look back over a generation of Anglo-American relationships and forward beyond the present war. I should like particularly to consider responsibilities as well as relationships. A more accurate caption for what I am going to say would be "Anglo-American Responsibilities.?? THE WAR WILL BE WON I am assuming that sooner or later we shall win this war. History and economics point to the same conclusion, that Germany has attempted the impossible and that the seeds of defeat are already sown. As to one ecof1:omic factor, I am already on public record as believing that Germany's oil supply is inadequate for the war she has launched. That opinion is unchanged. Aside from such tangible factors, moreover, I am convinced that the spirit of freedom is unquenchable, and that no combination of powers will be able to rout it from the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Stronger even than this conviction is my faith in a God who will not suffer the defeat of man's aspiration to be master of his own soul. I am sure that all of you share that faith, and that we need not argue it. We can start with the assumption that the war will end in victory. The subject we are to consider, then, is the relationship of the English-thinking peoples during the conflict, and their joint responsibilities in the difficult days that will follow it. A CANADIAN-AMERICAN No talk on such a subject is worth listening to unless the audience knows the background and fundamental beliefs of the speaker. No human statement stands alone; behind and beside and within it are the ideals and the bias of the man who makes it. Because I am a stranger to most of you, I am constrained to talk about myself before I talk about more important matters. "Abstract - "Les Mines Selbaie" is a large, generally low-grade, polymetallic (Zn, Cu, Ag, Au) "giant" volcanic-associated ore deposit in the Harricana-Turgeon belt, which is part of the northern Abitibi Subprovince of Quebec. Economically recoverable mineralization occurred in three zones: the A1 (open pit), A2, and B Zones (underground). The pre-mining resource was 54.9 Mt, including 8 Mt of sub-economic, locally silver-rich massive pyrite. In the Selbaie region, calc-alkaline andesitic volcanics form the "basement." The Brouillan Volcanic Complex formed within an islandarc setting on this regional basement. Evolution of this complex involved the formation of a felsic magma chamber and the development of a large caldera structure over the Brouillan batholith. Second- order linear and sub-parallel faults and rifts developed as a result of back-arc rifting/extension. The edges of these rifts were feeders for linear felsic volcanism (similar to fissural volcanism). During felsic volcanism, the feeder zones acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids with associated pervasive potassic alteration. The alteration is characterized both vertically and laterally by well-defined quartz, sericite, K-feldspar and/or, locally, biotite halos, to produce a mushroom-shaped morphology. This K-feldspar alteration is not common in most other volcanic-associated ore deposits. Mafic dikes cut all of the geological units and appear to occupy earlier synvolcanic structures. Regional greenschist- assemblage metamorphism and pervasive deformation affect all units. Thrust faults moved part of the Brouillan batholith and basement units over the Mine Sequence. Although there is no relationship between the earlier mineralizing events and these late thrust faults, the thrust faults probably played an important role in location of ore lenses. Three types of mineralization are present: 1) copper-rich veins and hydraulic breccias; 2) disseminated and stringer, low-grade and high volume zinc-copper mineralization; and 3) finely laminated, massive, locally silver-rich pyrite mineralization within structural basins. At the bottom of these basins and at the contact of welded acid tuff (WAT) units, massive pyrite zones are locally enriched in zinc, and contain the possible vestiges of black smoker-like material. The ore metals were probably derived from leached basement andesitic volcanics in a hydrothermal system powered by one or more heat sources within the Brouillan Volcanic Complex. The Selbaie deposits are mainly characterized by: (1) the presence of small volcano-tectonic subsidence basins, which host chemical sediments and volcaniclastic materials; (2) pervasive potassic alteration; (3) locally high-grade silver mineralization (up to 1-2 kg/t Ag); and (4) the presence of random zones of Pb mineralization. The Selbaie deposits can be closely compared with the copper-rich Murgul deposits, which belong to the eastern Pontides metallogenetic province in Turkey. If conventional classification criteria for the volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (e.g., Noranda, Mattabi types, and recent subsea floor deposits) are taken into account, the Selbaie deposits still exhibit many differences in terms of alteration assemblages, physical volcanology and some styles of mineralization (low-grade and large volume). Consequently, the "Selbaie" deposits belong to a new sub-type of volcanic-associated sulfide deposit, which may be used in future exploration programs."

"Recently, weight saving of automobiles has been strongly required to solve the global environmental problems. Mg alloys are one of the promising candidates as a new material for automobile components. However, the application of the Mg alloys is limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ preliminary study, an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated by hot extrusion and subsequent hot forging. The clad sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance and excellent super plasticity. More specifically, the elongation of the clad sheet was as high as 550%.Importantly, despite that the elongation of Al itself was only 40%without cladding with Mg, the ductility of Al was greatly improved in the form of the clad sheet. In the present study, in order to clarify the mechanism of the superplastic deformation of the Al part in the clad sheet, the microstructure evolution of the Al during the tensile de formation is investigated. The tensile tests were conducted at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rateof1.0×10-3s-1. The Al exhibited fiber-type texture at the beginning of the tensile deformation, and brass-type texture after the elongation of 50%.INTRODUCTIONMg alloys have been gaining attention because of their excellent properties e.g. light weight, good recyclability and high electromagnetic shielding. However, their practical applications have been limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ previous study, in order to solve this problem, Al coating on Mg alloy by hot extrusion has been proposed, and the Al-coated Mg alloy plate was fabricated(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2012). The plate was hot-rolled and an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated. No cracks or debondings were observed at the Al/Mg interface. The sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance in a comparable level as pure Al. Also, the sheet exhibited a large and uniform elongation of 550%in a tensile test at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rate of 1.0×10-3s-1without any breakings or debondings of the Al part(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2014).Mg alloys have been known to exhibit a superplastic characteristic when the grain size is small. However, it is known that the pure Al does not generally exhibit the super plasticity. As mentioned above, the Al-coated Mg alloy sheet exhibited 550% of elongation in the authors’ previous study (Tokunagaet al., 2014). However, the pure Al itself showed only 40% of elongation, while the Mg alloy itself exhibited 800% of elongation. Thus, it has been demonstrated that the pure Al was super plastically elongated when it was bonded with the Mg alloy. Generally, deformation mechanism of the super plasticity of the Mg alloy is known as a grain boundary sliding. On the other hand, the mechanism of the superplastic elongation of the pure Al is still unclear. The purpose of the present study is investigation of the deformation behavior of the Al part in the Al/Mg/Al clad sheet during tensile de formation."

A new vapochromic material of formula [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(bipy)2]n (bipy = 2,2´ bipyridine) has been developed and used for the detection of some volatile organic compounds as acetone either in vapour or in water solution. The material is presented in the form of powders which colour changes with acetone vapours turning from bright yellow in the absence of vapour to white in the presence of vapour. By using the sol-gel technique, the powder ? dispersed in tetraethyl orthosilicate- was easily deposited on optical fibres. In order to study experimentally the behaviour of this material for construction practical optical fibre sensors, a sol-gel material doped with the vapochromic material is deposited onto an extreme of a monomode fibre connected to a coupler. The behaviour of the material was studied for different wavelengths and concentrations of acetone vapours and acetone/water solutions. Changes up to 4dB in the reflected optical power were detected. Optical fibre sensors have many advantages over conventional ones, such as electromagnetic interference immunity, passivity behaviour, possibility of using multiplexation techniques, low weigh and little size, etc. Actually, there is an increasing interest in developing optical fibre sensor for vapour detection in the chemical industry and in fact many sensor had been developed [1]. Some are based on the deposition of a sol-gel-based material either over the core of an optical fibre [1] or onto the thinner zone of a biconically tapered optical fibre [2]. Others are based on Fabry-Perot interferometers [3]. Also there are sensors based on the reflection of the light on films, on the fluorescence of dye-doped polymer cladding in fibre, on colorimetric reagents in the core of a silica fibre or on surface plasmon [4]. The possible materials for the construction of such sensor should be colorimetric reagents able to change the colour or refractive index in the presence of same organic vapours. There are not many metallic complexes with these properties, although same interesting examples have been reported in the chemistry of palladium and platinum as [Pt(p-R-C6H4NC)4][Pd(CN)4] described by Nagel [5] and Mann [6], which reported the construction of some LEDs. We recently reported the preparation of a novel vapochromic material (Fig 1) [7] which can be used for the construction of optical fibre tapered environmental sensors [8,9] of vapour organic compounds (VOC´s). Also we reported other nickel and palladium derivatives which present this type of behaviour [10]

"IntroductionREEFS of Silurian age are recognized in southwestern Ontario, both in outcrop and from subsurface information. This paper deals with the so-called 'pinnacle' reefs which are known only in the subsurface. For the purpose of this paper, the pinnacle reefs are arbitrarily defined as those structures having a height of over 250 feet and a length of less than two miles. This definition eliminates numerous mounds and other broader, more subdued, structures of less certain origin, found in subsurface beds.The term 'pinnacle reef' is perhaps unfortunate, but it is in common usage in Ontario and is used elsewhere for different types of reefs. A new name is justified by the unusual environment and structure of the Ontario reefs, but it is unlikely that any other term would gain acceptance. Rather than propose a new term which would be ignored or result in further confusion and misuse, the name 'pinnacle', as defined above, is used in this paper.Pinnacle reefs have been found over a fairly large part of southwestern Ontario. The known reefs of this type parallel the southeast edge of lake Huron and •follow the strike of the structure contours which circle the Michigan basin (see Figure 1). In total, twenty-five such reefs have been discovered in southwestern Ontario."
