The development and maintenance of underground roadways are increasingly important aspects of the modern mining process. With the trend toward automation and track-less mining, roadbeds capable of with standing increased wheel loading have proven necessary to maintain high vehicle speed and reduced maintenance costs. Concrete has been used successfully on some roadways in order to obtain the required characteristics. However, this solution usually involves unacceptable expense. The objective of the Road Router project was to create a drift floor profiling machine capable of cutting a smooth surface out of the existing rock floor of development drifts and ramps. This surface would provide a durable, high strength, low rolling resistance roadbed that would allow for reduced operating cycle times and lower maintenance costs of scoops and haulage trucks. The Road Router has the potential to offer an alternative to concrete with substantial cost savings.

"Resin-anchored rebar is commonly used for rock support in mining. The rock properties and environment determine the average bond strength, allowing mine engineers to select the appropriate length and installation pattern for the support. In weak material such as potash, the average bond strength tends to be lower than for a typical hard-rock installation. Determining the failure mechanism by which the support fails in soft-rock applications could lead to improved bond strength and better calculated installed support capacity. This paper reports on research conducted at a potash mine in Saskatchewan and analyzes the failure mechanism of the support.RÉSUMÉ Dans les mines, les barres d’armature enduites de résine sont fréquemment utilisées pour soutenir le roc. L’environnement et les propriétés du roc déterminent la résistance moyenne d’adhésion, permettant ainsi aux ingénieurs miniers de choisir la longueur de barre appropriée et le diagramme d’installation du soutien. "IntroductionIT HAS BEEN SAID, with good reason, that the future of the coal mining industry, in our mountainous regions at least, depends on ability to extend operations successfully to depths greater than those reached until now. However, at many points, Nature has given definite hints that trespassing there could be fraught with very un-pleasant possibilities, unless the intruder be governed by a series of rigidly observed principles. In the coal mines of British Columbia, so far, bumps have taken place only at the Coal Creek colliery, but there they gave ample evidence of the extent to which they can hamper underground operations. Some of these manifestations have also been experienced at the McGillivray Creek colliery, in Alberta, at Carbonado, in Washington, and at Sunnyside, in Utah.Cognate phenomena, known as 'air blasts', have been experienced also in some deep metalliferous mines in British Columbia. Such occurrences were responsible for three fatal accidents at the Le Roi and War Eagle mines, near Rossland, in 1916 and 1917.In more or less disturbed coal fields, another form of stress release, equally detrimental, has been still more generally experienced than have been the bumps. Coal outbursts have taken place at Morrissey and Coal Creek, in the Crow's Nest Pass district, and at Cassidy, South Wellington, and the Nanaimo Reserve colliery, on Vancouver island. Manifestations of this kind have been made the subject of intensive study in European countries where they occurred on a really impressive scale, which must not be construed as meaning that some of our own outbursts did not approach a comparable magnitude."

Many miners are exposed to dangerously high levels of noise on a daily basis. Over the past 15 years, a continually increasing number of occupational hearing loss has been reported from the mining community in the United States, of which, more than 95% is attributed to prolonged noise exposure. Although the noise exposure levels may differ between coal miners and metal and non-metal miners, in the absence of noise control at the source, the solution is the same: use of personal hearing protection devices (HPD). While protecting the miners? hearing it is also essential to no longer hinder their ability to communicate. With access to an advanced HPD that is customized to the miners? ears we are able to combine these two requirements. Using an intra-aural instantly custom molded HPD miners are protected from high levels of noise. The HPD is equipped with wireless capabilities, and contains both a speaker and an In-Ear Microphone (IEM). Therefore, the miners? speech may be captured from inside the ear and transmitted to the remote listener. This IEM signal is relatively noise-free since it is isolated from the background noise. The IEM speech signal, however, is ?boomy? and is missing some high frequency content, making fricative consonants hard to understand. Nonetheless, the IEM speech signal is correlated with the natural speech signal and may be manipulated through statistical techniques to more closely resemble natural speech. By improving the intelligibility and quality of the IEM signal, numerous applications may be enabled. One use of the enhanced IEM signal will be for radio communication. Using wireless radio communication in a noisy mining environment is sometimes the only practical and affordable solution to allow communication between miners equipped with personal hearing protection devices. Traditionally, one of the weaknesses of such wireless radio communication lies in the lack of designating receivers: whether they are the intended receiver or not, all those carrying a radio receiver are subjected to the broadcasted signal. The current work will detail a new concept of a "radio-acoustical virtual environment" where the radio signal will only be received by miners within a given spatial range, such range depending on the user?s vocal effort as well as the ambient and perceived background noise levels.

Grain refinement is effective to enhance strength and ductility of metallic materials. However this advantage has not been utilized fully for magnesium alloys in industry because microstructure control through thermomechanical treatment is difficult owing to their poor deformability. The authors proposed a high-speed heavy-reduction rolling for production of Mg alloy sheets. It was found that the deformability is significantly improved at high speed and that the thickness can be reduced 60% by one-pass operation even at room temperature without fracture at the rolling speed higher than 1000 m/min. In this study, commercial AZ31B sheets were rolled at 2000 m/min between room temperature and 350°C, and quenched immediately after the rolling. The sheets rolled at 200°C show the finest recrystallized microstructure with the mean grain size of 2.2 Rm. They show outstanding mechanical properties with the tensile strength of 293 MPa, and the elongation of 25%. It is concluded that high-speed rolling is very advantageous for grain refinement and improvement in mechanical properties as well as deformability and productivity.

"Since the computer program is far from complete this must be only a brief progress report on the computerization of flotation metallurgy at the Ecstall concentrator at Timmins.Ecstall is currently treating about 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types. One is a low sulphide copper-zinc ore, the other is a high sulphide lead-zinc-silver ore. The concentrator is divided into three individual grinding and flotation circuits. In effect there are three mills under one roof. Normally there are two circuits on copper-zinc ore and oneone lead-zinc-silver ore. At this point in time one of the copper-zinc circuits is under computerized metallurgy control.The first step in this control is the use of an ARL on-stream x-ray analyzer, coupled with a Honeywell 21 computer which types out assays and recoveries for each individual circuit. Our approach to a computer program was to keep it simple. The program was written to coincide as closely as possible to what an operator would do in the performance of his duties based on the in-formation he was getting from the x-ray analyser read-out. Initially, computer control was put on just the copper circuit of the ""A"" Division, controlling the collector addition at three points in the circuit; primary, secondary, and scavengers. The control was based on recoveries and the grade of the copper concentrate. Targets like 95% recovery and 24% copper concentrate grades that it was felt the circuit could achieve were set to start with. It quickly became apparent that this alone was not enough because if on a certain ore the best recovery that could be made was only 94.9% the computer kept calling for more reagents until the circuit was completely out of control. On another ore it might have been quite possible to get 96% recovery but when the set point of 95% was reached the computer stopped trying for any more. To overcome this problem a very simple optimum seeking program was devised by one of the Ecstall staff and it has worked very satisfactorily since being put into use in July 1970.In the copper float only the two collectors R-208 and the xanthate R-317 are under computer control. The addition of frother and depressant is left to the operator. The flotation cells have automatic level controls which can be adjusted by the operator. pH is controlled automatically through a lime loop-sensor arrangement."

RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events, and so maximising health and safety performance. A comprehensive body of knowledge has been compiled from diverse mining industry experts for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This paper presents an overview of the body of knowledge captured from diverse mining industry experts for the management of unwanted strata incidents, and explosions in the underground environment. This knowledge is divided into a series of initiating events within both topics (as listed) with further degrees of classification based on design, operation, and management concerns. Slope problems arise on mining properties from cuts for roads and railroads and from open pits. When it is 'realized that 1,000,000 extra tons of waste may have to be mined as a result of an average slope being reduced by 1 ° it is easy to appreciate that the slope problems connected with open pits are of far greater importance than the others. The type of slope failure that can occur can be classified in different ways. The most useful classification would be one that separates the causes in such a way as to provide a basis for studies to deal with problems of prevention and control. Using this criterion the types of slope failures are classified into four groups. "What is now known as the 'Waite section' of the property of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, was originally the Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery mine. It includes a group of twenty-eight claims lying on either side of the Duprat-Dufresnoy township line, and about 8 miles north-northwest of Noranda, Quebec. ,The original discovery of ore on the property was made by Thomas Montgomery in Block Q, Duprat township, and was staked by him on behalf of himself, I. C. Waite, and C. H. Ackerman, in the summer of 1925. The property was optioned late in 1925 to N. A. Timmins who, after trenching and drilling the deposit, sold his 85 per cent interest to Noranda Mines, Limited. Early in 1927, a company known as Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, was formed and shaft sinking and development undertaken. Production commenced in August, 1928, ·and continued tJ May, 1930, when, owing to falling metal prices, shipment of direct smelting ore was stopped. Development of the mine by shaft sinking, drifting, and drilling continued until March, 1932, when owing to the prolonged low price of metals, the property was closed down. In September, 1933, an amalgamation with Amulet Mines, Limited, was effected, the new company being called Waite Amulet Mines, Limited. Early in 1937 operations were resumed, first by direct shipments to the smelter and later by aerial tramway to the Amulet mill. Operations have been continuous up to the present time, reaching an average of 720 tons a day milled for the year 1940. Production during the initial period (1928-1930) amounted to 75,811 tons, having an average grade of 7 .11 per cent copper, 4.47 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton. During the second period (1937 to end of 1946) , 1,060,524 tons, having an average grade of 4.53 per cent copper, 2.97 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton, were produced."

Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54' North, longitude 158" 17' West; and latitude 23" 42' North, longitude 163° 45' West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

"Chromite ore is one of the essential raw materials for ferroalloy and steel industry. Boula-Nuasahi belt of Sukinda region, Odisha, is the only resource of chrome ore in India. The Indian deposits are typically characterized as ferruginous and siliceous type ores. Chrome ore is generally mined by open cast mechanized mining method in these areas. The run-off-mine (ROM) ore from the various mines is sent to beneficiation plant via stack yard for further up gradation. The chrome ore beneficiation plant (COB) has two major circuits: comminution (feed preparation) circuit and beneficiation circuit. In the comminution circuit, the ore is reduced to <1 mm size ( for complete liberation of chromite) from -220 mm size in stage wise crushing (primary and secondary crusher) followed by screening and single stage grinding in a ball mill. Fraction having size <1 mm is further upgraded in the beneficiation circuit to produce three different concentrates having specific chemical composition and Cr: Fe ratio. The beneficiation plant is a complex circuit comprising of combination of unit operations (spiral concentrator, Floatex density separator, hydrocyclone, wet shaking tables). In the recent years the overall performance efficiency (grade and recovery) of the beneficiation circuit got affected with numerous changes in the run-off-mine ore quality (physical and chemical), mineralogical composition, etc.In this article, attempts made for improving the performance of chrome ore beneficiation circuit is discussed. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered while the process were also highlighted. The results of the trials has shown an improvement in the performance of the cyclone (d50 : 56 µm – 40 µm) and chromite losses into tailing to <12%.INTRODUCTIONChromite has a wide range of application, from refractories to metallurgical industries, and from chemical to non-ferrous alloy industries. Chromium ore (Fe2+, Mg) [Cr, Al, Fe3+]2O4) occurs exclusively in rocks formed by the intrusion and solidification of molten lava or magma which is very rich in the heavy, iron containing minerals such as pyroxene and olivine. With the richness of silica and iron, the chrome ores are broadly classified as siliceous type and ferruginous type. Pure chromite with composition FeCr2O4 is rare because magnesium usually substitutes for ferrous ion and aluminum and ferrous ion substitutes for chromium. Generally the associated gangue minerals are talc, quartz, hematite, goethite, limonite, gabro, serpentine, anorthosite, dunite, pyroxinite, etc. Around 96% of the chromite ore production is consumed for metallurgical applications of which 94% is converted into different grades of ferrochrome i.e., high carbon ferrochrome and charge chrome as shown in Figure 1. Stainless steel being the leading consumer of ferrochrome, any change in the dynamics of the stainless steel industry impacts overall chrome ore demands significantly."

"IntroductionMinerals may be classed broadly as ferromagnetic (magnetite for example), as paramagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field convergence) and as diamagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field divergence). High-intensity separators are not necessary to separate ferromagnetic minerals from other classes. Rather, low-intensity units that generate fields below 5000 gauss are adequate for this purpose. However, paramagnetic minerals, such as ilmenite, with high magnetic ""attractability"" require fields of up to 10 000 gauss; those with low attractability may require even higher fields. Table 1 shows approximate ranges of field intensities necessary to separate ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals from minerals of lower attractability, along with the force with which they are attracted relative to iron in a standardized magnetic field.Uniform magnetic fields, not useful for separators, are generated between flat parallel surfaces; non-uniform fields, useful for separators, arise when at least one of the surfaces is of irregular shape. The diagrams below show how magnetic lines of force align relative to north and south poles.If a particle is placed in a uniform field, it feels no displacing force unless the particle distorts the applied field assymmetrically. This is not the case in non-uniform fields which are required for magnetic separators.Magnetic fields can be generated by permanent magnets (low intensity), by electromagnets (medium and high intensity) and even by superconducting coils (100 000 gauss fields and higher), although the latter are not as yet useful in production environments .The magnetic force of attraction per unit of mass, that acts on a paramagnetic mineral such as hematite, increases in proportion to the strength of the field . Unfortunately, the highest fields attainable with electromagnets is of the order of 20 000 gauss. Fortunately, the gradient of the fie ld (that is, the degree of convergence of magnetic lines of force) is important, because the attractive force per unit mass is proportional to it also . In this paper, the tribological and electrochemical corrosion properties of Al2O3/polymer nanocomposite coatings were studied using a micro-hardness test, a single-pass scratch test, an abrasive-wear test, and finally an electrochemical technique such as potentiodynamic polarization measurement, The coatings containing Al2O3 nanoparticles showed improvement in scratch and abrasive resistance compared with polymer coatings; this improvement is attributed to the dispersion hardening of Al2O3 nanoparticles in polymer coatings, Corrosion test results showed that the embedded Al2O3 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix do not sacrifice the corrosion resistance of the polymer itself.

In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called “crud” is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design. The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the seriesconnected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation. The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a “burnout” of the cathode. The carry-over of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show. To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl®. By this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimise the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper.

"Proper shale characterization is crucial in shale gas drilling, exploration, completion and production. Unlike porous sandstone and carbonate reservoirs, the challenge with shales comes from their micro- to nano-darcy permeability ranges and the anisotropy of their mechanical and hydraulic properties. Most porosity-dependent logs are not sensitive enough to capture the true behavior of shales. Consequently, mineralogy and other strength and stiffness-related properties must be determined to characterize magnitudes and variances in shale mechanical and flow properties. In addition, these properties must pass quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) practices to give confidence in their use in subsequent log calibrations, during geomechanical modeling, or in fracture design models. This paper presents a technique to integrate shale properties that are measured by various methods, and a methodology to perform QA/QC on the data before application.Shale properties originate from various sources, including downhole and laboratory measurements. Physical samples for laboratory testing are usually limited to a few depths. Lab tests are often costly, and replicating in-situ conditions can be difficult or impossible. In addition, results frequently show wide scatter, reflecting inherent depth variability and lateral heterogeneity. Wireline logs provide nearcontinuous data, but rarely yield direct measurements of rock strength properties. Although geomechanical and fracture models use log data, calibrating it with reliable and previously verified lab-measured properties is important. This paper presents a process to perform QA/QC on lab-measured data using various crossplots.Ten mechanical, microstructural and physical properties are graphically displayed to visually characterize shale strength behavior in ambient and in-situ conditions, whether measured or modeled statically or dynamically. These properties are often sourced from different departments. The properties are integrated but are individually subject to the previously mentioned uncertainties. Pairs of property values are crossplotted and compared with correlations from the literature or previously established with qualified data from related formations. Conformance with these correlations gives confidence in the data, whereas outliers are flagged as questionable. Repeating the process with questionable data crossplotted against other parameters for the same depth highlights the property with the greatest uncertainty. The determination of its value is investigated to locate the source of the inconsistency and establish a more reliable value. Where this is not possible, the user has a rational basis for rejecting that property value."

The Tetreault mine, operated by the British Metal Corporation (Canada), Limited, holds a unique position in Canadian mining, being the only steady producer of zinc in Canada east of the Rocky mountains. Its importance in Canadian zinc production may be gauged with some accuracy, since, in 1927, it was responsible for over 13 per cent of the zinc output of the Dominion. In addition, it also made valuable contributions to the production of lead, silver, and gold. Location: Situated in the foothills of the Laurentian mountains, 600 feet above sea level, 20 miles from the St. Lawrence river, and 52 miles due west from the city of Quebec, the property is in the township of Montauban, county Portneuf, Province of Quebec, as shown in Figure I. The municipality of Montauban, immediately adjoining the mine, has a permanent population of 700 people and is six miles by road from Notre Dame station on the main line of the C.N. Rys. between Montreal and Chicoutimi-Notre Dame being n6 miles by rail from Montreal. Connection by 19 miles of dirt-and-gravel road with the Provincial highways&apos; system of Quebec Province, the city of Quebec, which is distant 78 miles, can be reached by automobile in less than three hours, while the distance to Montreal by road is 16o miles .

"Introductory and GeneralTHE Northwest Territories comprise all that region -of Canada lying between Yukon Territory and Hudson bay and north of the 60th parallel of latitude. For purposes of mine .administration the Territories are divided into three districts: Yellowknife, McKenzie, and Arctic and Hudson Bay. Mining recording offices for the respective districts are maintained at Yellowknife, Fort Smith, and Ottawa. The mine inspection for the entire area, and also for Yukon Territory, comes under the Federal Department of Resources and Development. Two mining inspectors are responsible for these inspections: the Chief Inspector of Mines, with headquarters in Ottawa, who makes trips into the north at least twice a year, and a Resident Inspector, stationed in Yellowknife.The Resident Inspector is constantly making inspections of active properties. This involves a considerable amount of air travel as the region is large and properties are widely scattered.Although there has been prospecting and staking of claims in each of the three districts of the Northwest Territories, actual mining has been conducted only in the Yellowknife district, and for purposes of this paper we are solely concerned with that district."

In September 1945, when the Lynn Lake nickel orebody was discovered Sherritt Gordon Mines was a small copper mining company with rapidly depleting ore reserves at its single producing mine at Sherridon in the Cold Lake area of Manitoba, 100 miles north of The Pas. The company has been formed in 1927, largely through the efforts of Eldon L. Brown, a 27-year old mining engineer, with the financial backing of Thayer and Halstead Lindsley and the Gordon family. The Lindsleys were American mine promoters who had been successful in the Sudbury area, and the Gordons had extensive interests in the lumber industry in northern Ontario. Carl Sherritt, who gave his name to the company, was an American trapper and prospector who had staked the copper property and sold his interest to the new company. Carl Sherritt died in a flying accident at The Pas in 1928. The Sherritt Gordon Mine started production in 1931, shipping copper concentrate to the new Hudson Bay copper smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba. In 1931 the price of copper was 18¢/lb. Within a year the price had fallen to 5¢ /lb and the mine was forced to close. It remained closed through the Depression years.
