Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.

"Abstract - The size, morphology, surface texture, per cent mineral inclusions, and bulk chemistry (Ag and trace elements) of placer gold particles vary systematically according to transport distance from source rocks, as indicated by a case study from the Pioneer district in Montana, and data from the literature.Placer gold samples show a rapid decrease in mean and maximum particle length, and a gradual increase in flatness index (F.I. = length + breadth/2 X thickness) from about F.I. = 2 in bedrock deposits, to as much as F.I. = 45 over transport distances of several tens of kilometers. Primary mineral inclusions (mainly quartz, sulfide minerals, and iron oxides) are mostly lost within 10 km to 20 km of fluvial transport; this loss of quartz and trace metals causes a major change in bulk chemistry of placer gold samples. Following the loss of inclusions and the development of flakes, edges of flakes are folded and the mean number of folded edges in a sample increases with distance. When viewed under the electron microscope, surface textures of placer gold particles also become progressively more pitted with distance.Analysis of placer gold particles can be used to help evaluate placer source-area problems (placers with no known hard-rock gold deposits). For example, coarse placer gold containing abundant inclusions indicates a proximal source. On the other hand, an abundance of thin flakes is evidence of a long transport distance and possible reworking from older gravels. Placer gold characteristics can therefore provide information on distance to mineralized source rocks."

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. "The Moa JV was formed in December 1994 as a 50/50 joint venture between Sherritt Inc. and General Nickel Company S.A. of Cuba. The joint venture consists of the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba processing plant in Moa, Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Throughout its now nearly 23-year history, the Moa Joint Venture has faced a number of global, operational and process challenges. Global challenges have included high input costs such as for fuel oil and sulphur, as well as low nickel prices. Operational and process challenges have included increasing ore haulage distances, decreasing ore Ni + Co grades, and increasing ore impurity contents. For example, increases in impurities such as Mg and SiO2 in the ore result in increasing acid demand in leaching and decreasing solids content of preheated leach feed slurry, respectively. In spite of these challenges, the mixed sulphide production capacity from the Moa Joint Venture has increased from 12,500 to 37,000 t/y Ni + Co since 1994 by judiciously targeting expansion projects and by continuously performing process and operational improvements.INTRODUCTION The Pedro Sotto Alba high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant at Moa Bay, Cuba has a long history (Maslenitzkiy, 1969; Chalkley, 1996; Carlson, 1960; Roy, 1961; Carlson 1961). The plant was constructed by Moa Bay Mining Company and started up in late 1959 after several years of process development by Freeport Nickel Company, including operation of a 10 t/d plant in Hoskins Mound, Texas and a 50 t/d plant in Port Nickel, Louisiana (Southwick, 2004), as well as development work by Chemical Construction Company (Chemico) to precipitate metal sulphides (Roy, 1955a; Roy, 1955b). The Moa plant had an original reserve of 50,000,000 t of ore, graded at 1.35 wt% Ni, 0.146 wt% Co, 3.70 wt% Si, 1.00 wt% Mg and 4.5 wt% Al. At original design rates of 2,000 kt/y of ore, the design capacity of the plant was around 25,000 t/y Ni + Co as a mixed sulphide product, which would be shipped to the Port Nickel Refinery in Louisiana for processing. In 1960, the plant changed ownership and was restarted in 1961 under Cuban management. Between 1961 and 1989, the plant was also supported by involvement from the former USSR, supplying spare parts and consumables. In 1994, Sherritt Inc. partnered with the General Nickel Co. S.A. of Cuba and formed the Moa Joint Venture. This joint venture includes the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba HPAL processing plant in Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Under this partnership, ore is processed in Cuba to produce a nominally 55 wt% Ni and 5 wt% Co mixed sulphide product that is shipped to Canada and processed by Corefco to produce class 1 nickel, high grade cobalt and byproduct ammonium sulphate fertilizer."

This paper documents the 1988 discovery and subsequent evaluation (to 1991) of diamond bearing kimberlites in the Fort à la Corne area, Saskatchewan, by Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited. Cameco Corporation began participating as a joint venture partner (50%) in mid-1989. The first indications that kimberlite-type intrusions might exist in the area carne from Geological Survey of Canada aeromagnetic maps. Because of the overburden thickness (over 100 m), magnetometer surveys continue to be the main exploration tool in defining pipe locations and sizes. Magnetometer surveys in varying levels of detail have outlined one main cluster and two sub-clusters, the main group being some 10 km by 50 km in size. In excess of 70 individual targets have been interpreted from the magnetics as probably representing kimberlites. The size range of the individual magnetically-defined bodies is between 1 ha and 74 ha. Proof that the magnetic anomalies were kimberlite intrusions carne in 1989 when each of seven test holes, all drilled on different targets, intersected the potential diamond host rock. The majority of the targets tested were diamond-bearing, with the indicator mineral chemistries suggesting that both peridotitic and ecIogitic diamond parageneses could be expected. To date, 18 individual kimberlite bodies have been drill-tested. A total of 39 bulk samples, amounting to 186 t (representing 360 t of theoretical sample recoveries) were processed in 1990 and 1991. One hundred and sixty diamonds were recovered, averaging 0.04 carats in weight, the largest being 0.6 carats. Most of the bulk sample grades are less than 2 carats/loo t; only three bulk samples have higher grades, the best being approximately 10.5 carats/l00 1. The diamonds are predominantly gem-quality stones.

Abstract - A method to extract certain types of error variance information from paired data is presented, which constitutes an important tool for the calibration of Gy’s formula for variance predictions in the sampling of broken ores. The research summarized here complements publications by others on geochemical precision. The model and method proposed for treating duplicate data provide a practical means of deriving separate estimates of the purely analytical and aliquot sampling variances, from a unique set of duplicate assays, and, hence, proposes a new avenue for estimating effective mineral grain size.

There is an increasing trend between increasing consumption of water and the production of metal concentrate. Along with this trend we see that ore grades are declining and getting more complex to concentrate around the world. This will not only complicate processing but also generate new requirements for the management of water and waste streams on mining sites. The mining industry is a large user of water and its water consumption is growing rapidly. The processing of lower quality ores requires greater volumes of water. For these reasons, the need for efficient use of water and water management at mine sites is becoming more urgent. The perception of water in the mining industry has changed from thinking about it only in terms of "water treatment" to actually seeing it as a valuable resource, a resource that needs proper management. This resource management needs to involve various aspects, such as optimizing water usage of the entire mine or concentrator site, minimizing fresh water usage, minimizing or eliminating waste generated in water treatment and implementing practices for water reuse and water recycling. This paper presents trends and new developments relating to waste and water management in the mining industry.

The effect of welding speed on the microstructure of friction stir processed (FSPed) AZ31B-H24 magnesium alloy was studied using light microscopy, image analysis, and microhardness tests. The grain size of the magnesium alloy was observed to increase after FSP from about 3.5 µm in the base alloy to about 8 µm in the stir zone. The aspect ratio decreased from 1.60 to 1.55 towards the center of the stir zone. The changes in the grain size and shape caused the microhardness of the samples to drop significantly across the FSPed region from 75 HV in the base alloy to below 55 HV in the stir zone. Decreasing the welding speed increased the grain size due to a greater input of heat energy. The faster heating rate due to the lower welding speed caused a deeper penetration of the annealing effects of FSP. It was also observed that the annealing effects caused by FSP were less pronounced with increasing distance from the interface between the sample and pin tool shoulder. The Hall-Petch type relationship of the micro-indentation hardness as a function of the grain size was observed to hold true after FSP.

Introduction In the aggregate, directly and ?indirectly, the pulp and paper industry ? consumes very large quantities of a variety of minerals, or compounds prepared from minerals. This is especially true in the manufacture of news-print, but fine papers, also, account for some of this consumption, in the processes of loading, coating, and otherwise improving the finish. The more important of the minerals used in the industry in Canada are briefly dealt with in the following pages. The list is by no means exhaustive, however. Thus, barite, lithopone, zinc oxide, zinc sulphide, and titanium oxide are used in small quantities in Canada in filling and coating paper. Up to the present time, however, the quantities of these materials used in the paper industry have not sufficed to encourage their manufacture in Canada. In the case of barite (barium sulphate)-or of witherite (barium carbonate)-it may be said that, should deposits of commercial size be discovered in Canada, the ore would have considerable export value, for use in the paper and other industries. China-Clay (Kaolin) Considerable quantities of china-clay are used for brightening and improving the finish of paper, and there is a growing tendency to use larger amounts of this material in newsprint manufacture. No china-clay suitable for paper manufacture is at present produced in Canada, but samples have been forthcoming recently from a deposit near St. Remi d'Amherst, Labelle county, Que., about thirty miles north of the Ottawa river and approximately midway between Montreal and Ottawa, and plans are under way to conduct large-scale tests with this material. Present sources of supply are the United States, England, and Russia.

"The Special Standard Surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO) has been plagued with flow problems and wear, and corrosion issues for it’s entire working life. Investigation showed that the carbon steel construction, bin geometry, and resultant funnel-flow pattern were directly responsible for production losses and disproportionate maintenance and capital costs. Potash enters this bin at between 140°C and 165°C, but the stagnant potash outside the active flow channel was much cooler, allowing moisture to migrate toward the outer regions, which caused corrosion of the walls and reduced live capacity as the potash in this area hardened and built up on the walls over time.A 2013 inspection revealed holes and paper-thin areas in the lower cylinder wall sections and in the conical hopper. The only thing preventing major leaks and even a potentially catastrophic failure was the buildup of stagnant hardened product on the cone walls. It was concluded that the cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement. VPO’s original plan was to replace the cone in kind and repair the cylinder as necessary; however, a failure-mode and bin-performance investigation combined with a lifecycle- cost analysis indicated it would be better to redesign the hopper.For success in retrofit projects, it is essential at the design stage to consider the bulk solid flow properties and the operating environment involved. Because education in this area is not offered at a university level, engineers often do not fully appreciate the effects of the flow properties of bulk solids on bulk material handling equipment.Jenike & Johanson conducted flow properties tests on samples of potash and using the data, redesigned the bin and the feeder. After the modifications, VPO’s surge bin provides safer, more reliable operation with a much longer predicted working life. Using this retrofit as an example, we aim to provide a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing the design to the appropriate flow properties in the cost effectiveness, reliability, and safety of a bulk material handling system."

"Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized. These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. In this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dissolving huge cavities in the evaporites. The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds. In at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation.Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore wne, and drops in topography > 10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies. Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

Recently, the effects of global climate changes have become top concerns for governments? decision making regarding infrastructure investments. Extreme weather events that exceed the capacity of existing systems have considerably increased in frequency, and the potential effects of changing trends in temperature and rainfall on infrastructure are difficult to ignore. It is essential for governments to estimate the costs and benefits of adaptation to climate change to properly assess the financial feasibility of infrastructure adaptation strategies. This paper proposes a framework for estimating the economic aspects of infrastructure adaptation to climate change. The framework is composed of three steps of implementation: establishment of alternatives for infrastructure adaptation, performance prediction of infrastructure using future climate scenarios, and asset valuation based on costs and benefits. The first step specifies target assets, their adaptability to climate change, and applicable adaptation technologies. The second step evaluates the effects of climate change on the performance of infrastructure. The last step determines the optimal adaptation strategies among various alternatives based on their net benefits. The framework reasonably incorporates future climate scenarios into the estimation processes for climate change effects and provides a basis for budget allocation for governmental infrastructure investments. The framework is expected to assist government decision makers in establishing adaptation strategies in a rational manner under uncertain future climate change.

"The process described has been developed to utilize low-grade scrap -turnings, borings, tin cans and other types of ferrons scrap which currently has been of limited or no use in conventional steelmaking processes. If scrap of this type can be converted into high-purity iron by chemical means then there is a potential saving of several million tons of metal annually in North America.The process is chemically quite simple and consists of dissolving ferrons scrap in hydrochloric acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization of the resultant solution to yield ferrons chloride crystal.s. These crystals are dries, briquetted and converted to non sponge by reduction in hot hydrogen. The HCl produced from the reduction step. is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid so produced is returned to the dissolver circuit. The hydrogen produced from the initial dissolution of the scrap is used to reduce the ferrons chloride. Purity is maintained by bleeding off impure chloride solutions from the evaporator-crystallizer circuit, and converting these chlorides to oxides and HCI in a high-temperature spray roaster. The HCl produced in the roaster is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid returned to the dissolver."

Renewable assets have large upfront capital costs but minimal operating expenses over their lifetimes. In some instances, deals can be structured so that direct capital investment is feasible, with paybacks typically within 5-7 years. In others, the burden of renewable CAPEX must be removed in order to create an attractive alternative to fossil-fuel-fired generation. Hatch has designed and oversees the construction of a renewable installation, which is financed, owned and operated by a special-purpose entity. Renewable energy is then delivered to the mining company via a customized power purchase agreement at a price that is lower than the levelized cost of fossil fuels. In this way, the mining company removes the burden of the renewable energy CAPEX from its balance sheet, thus freeing up capital, decreasing risk, and making the predictable, lower cost of renewable power more attractive than the variable cost of fossil fuels. This paper presents the above business model and success stories of hybrid power at remote sites (wind and solar coupled with diesel engine).

Introduction The property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited is situated at the northeastern end of Kirkland lake, Ontario. It lies immediately east of the Lake Shore mine, and about in the centre of the Kirkland Lake camp. The district is served by the Swastika-Rouyn branch of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario railway, the town of Kirkland Lake being four miles northeast of Swastika, which is 63 miles north of Cobalt and 392 miles north of Toronto. The mine is developed by three shafts and has more than twenty-eight miles of underground workings. There are two main producing veins, which lie in a porphyry boss 1,350 feet wide. Milling started in May, 1921, and to-date (January, 1933) the mine has produced gold to the value of $21,770,183. Present production is at the rate of 800 tons of ore per day. For a description of the geology, reference may be made to the report by E. W. Todd on the Kirkland Lake Gold Area (1). Structure and Ore Deposits The two major productive veins on the Wright-Hargreaves property are known as the North vein and the South vein. In the vicinity of the shafts these veins are approximately 550 feet apart. A third vein, known as the Inclined vein, has been worked from its junction with the South vein at the 2,000-foot level to its intersection with the North vein at the 800-foot level. This inclined vein has to date been found only in the area east of the eastern major north-south fault. The main North vein and South vein have a general vertical dip, although local rolls and post-ore faults throw certain sections out of line. From the surface to 3,900 feet, the North vein is displaced south less than 200 feet, and the South vein at the same horizon is almost perpendicularly beneath the surface showings.

At present, most ore milling is done in tumbling mills, consisting of huge cylinders turning on their horizontal axis. This rotational motion causes the ore charge and the grinding balls to interact by impact, compression and abrasion, to reduce the size of the ore. This method is very inefficient since only around 12% of the energy supplied is used for actual grinding, the rest being used in moving the large mass of balls and ore within the mill. This work aimed at better understanding the milling process by evaluating the movement of the load through the Discrete Elements Method (DEM). First, the number of bodies (balls and ore) moving inside the mill is determined, to correlate to the potential impacts that constitute one of the milling mechanisms. Then, the number of high energy impacts is evaluated to correlate to the bodies in motion. At this stage, a differentiation between grinding media and the ore, as well as between the types of contact taking place in the mill, has to be made. This latter issue is of great relevance since from the five identified contact types (ball-ball, ball-liner, ore-ore, ball-ore and ore-liner) only the last three actually contribute to the milling process, the other two causing structural damage to the mill.

"Kirkland Lake Gold introduced battery equipped vehicles (BEVs) at the Macassa Mine in 2011. The fleet of underground BEV haulage trucks and loaders has grown over the years to over 30 units, the world’s largest, currently handling approximately 80% of the daily production tonnage. The inflow and outflow of air occur through a limited number of relatively small openings, which limits the air volume delivered to the underground workings. In addition to improving air quality, the reduced heat load generated by the BEV (when compared to diesel equipment) had a significant positive impact in the workplace. The use of BEV for material handling has enabled increases in production that would not have been possible using diesel equipment.INTRODUCTIONMacassa mine was developed as a track-drift access mine, with the most recent shaft (#3) sunk in 1986. A new mining complex, the South Mine Complex (SMC) was discovered below the 5025 foot elevation south of traditional mining areas, and the majority of mining now occurs in the SMC. The discovery of that zone has led to an internal ramp which is used to access the SMC and haul ore to #3 shaft.The amount of airflow that can be moved through the mine is limited by the existing infrastructure to surface. This amount was recently increased to near its practical maximum from 118 CMS (250 kCFM) to 151 CMS (320 kCFM).Both diesel and electric equipment are used at Macassa. Tethered Load-Haul-Dump Machines (LHDs) have been replaced with Battery Electric LHDs, due to their increased mobility and depth of the mine. Battery trucks continue to replace locomotives to transport both ore and waste to the shaft, as mining has transitioned from tracked levels to trackless level and haulage has transitioned from horizontal levels to an inclined ramp.EQUIPMENT FLEET AT MACASSAMost of the primary material movers utilized at Macassa Mine are battery operated. As the mine goes deeper the battery technology will continue to be critical to the success of the operations.
