The instrumentation and monitoring of rock behaviour have played an important and necessary role in the practice of potash, rocksalt, gypsum, trona and coal mining. The art of rock instrumentation applied to soft rock and coal mining has progressively evolved over the past years and will surely continue to advance at a faster pace in the future as a result of the technological revolution we experience today. The development of sophisticated mine-wide data communications systems is being used for instrumentation and sensor automation, and laser, sonar and geophysics technology are being continuously adapted for rock monitoring purposes. In this paper, the author provides an overview of typical rock instrumentation used today and offers some views of the progressive evolution in rock mechanics instrumentation sophistication and design.

MR. E. L. Longmore (l), in presenting this paper at the Annual General Meeting, suggested that it was neither desirable nor necessary to read any but the briefest portion of the paper. He wished to emphasize that the scale of the milling operations at the Hollinger not only provided several units in continuous operation to ensure that the test work was being carried on under normal conditions, but also provided a large and competent staff to supervise such an extensive experiment and to criticize intelligently the recorded results. He wished to acknowledge the enthusiastic co-operation of the group of assistants whose excellent work was responsible for the confidence with which the conclusions could be presented. The following data were given as a supplement to the published paper. Following conclusion of the test work described in the paper, the size of the balls fed to the mill was changed from 3-in. diameter to 2Yz-in. Within a short time, a gradual rise in the tonnage rate took place and, as no other condition had been changed, the increased tonnage was credited to the changed character of the ball load. At present, the average daily tonnage for the mill with low discharge is 1,507 tons, an increase of 77 tons over the 1,430 tons ground when feeding a 3-in. ball. A similar increase in tonnage should be credited to the high-discharge test, if the 2;Y2-in. ball had been used at that time. This would raise the 1,117 tons ground at that time to a new figure of 1,177 tons. From a study made to determine those factors influencing the rate of pulp flow through the low-discharge mill, it became evident that the ball screen used on the high-discharge mill must have been restricting the flow through the mill, although this was not recognized at the time. Accord-ingly, it was decided to repeat the high-discharge run. Additional length was added to the 21-in. ring grizzly originally used, and the length of the reverse spiral was increased. The end of the grizzly was left open so that, if necessary, excess pulp might flow out. A coarse mesh 3 ft. by 3 ft. flat screen was provided to catch stray balls.

"Within the last decades, mainly the base metals, like zinc, copper and lead were recycled from different industrial residues without taking into account that accompanied minor side-elements are often also present. A high supply risk for critical raw materials derives mainly due to the high share of the worldwide production in a limited number of countries. Examples include indium and germanium in China, PGM in South Africa and Russia or cobalt and tungsten in the Democratic Republic of Congo. By taking the market of critical metals into account, the recycling of potential residues does not only contribute to an economic treatment but also to the European strategy to decrease the supply risk of certain metals. Depending on the metal discussed, political unrest, decreasing primary resources leading to supply risks in different countries or also simply economic interests moved these mentioned side elements and with this the residues where they are present in, into the focus of the recycling industry.Because of this, the typical routes of lead, zinc and copper production are evaluated concerning generated residues and their typical contents of contained minor elements. Finally, the paper tries to answer the questions how a possible treatment of these wastes could contribute to the overall supply of for example silver but also other minor elements."

Fine coal aggregation in concentrated coal-water suspensions was studied through steady-state rheological measurements. The wettability of coal particles was modified by dry oxidation of a bituminous coal. The degree of hydrophobicity was monitored using film flotation. The rheological measurements revealed that hydrophobic coal particles aggregate in aqueous suspensions, over a wide pH range, and produce slurries with high yield stresses. As the degree of coal oxidation increases, the coal particles become more hydrophilic and such suspensions exhibit lower yield stresses values. The yield stress values for suspensions prepared from oxidized/hydrophilic coal become a strong function of pH and correlate well with the surface charge as determined through electroacoustic measurements. These results indicate that the yield stress of aqueous suspensions of coal, and hence coal particles aggregation, is strongly affected by the wettability of coal particles.

There are numerous advantages in replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated anodes in copper electrowinning; for example, lower energy consumption, improved working conditions for operators and less environmental impact. Since 2012, Permascand AB in Ljungaverk, Sweden has evaluated Permascand coated titanium anodes in copper electrowinning pilot trials at Glencore Nikkelverk in Kristiansand, Norway. The investigation has proceeded in three different steps (Phase I, II and III). In Phase I, different Permascand coatings, electrode structures and coating methods were investigated. The results showed that improved current distribution, lower energy consumption and longer service life could be obtained with expanded mesh electrode structure in a box configuration compared to rod anodes in a single-mode construction. In addition, improved current distribution and less coating wear was found when electrostatic spray coating was used instead of brush (manual) coating. It was also found that the extrapolated service life from controlled lab experiments at 200 A/m2 was much shorter compared to what was experimentally obtained in copper electrowinning pilot trials at similar current densities. This was mainly attributed to different coating failure mechanisms in lab and industrial copper production. INTRODUCTION Traditionally lead-based anodes have been used in copper in electrowinning due to lower cost. But there are many advantages in replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated titanium anodes in copper electrowinning, such as lower energy consumption, higher corrosion resistance, improved working conditions for operators and less environmental impact. Still, many facilities are using lead-based anodes, although the progression of using metal oxide coated anodes in copper electrowinning has slightly increased (Robinson et al., 2012).

Heavy rainfall and typhoon oftentimes cause the collapse of hillslopes across mountain roads. Disastrous consequences of slope collapses necessitate the approach for predicting their occurrences. In practice, slope collapse prediction can be formulated as a deterministic classification problem with two class labels, namely ?collapse? and ?non-collapse?. Nevertheless, due to the criticality and the uncertainty of the problem, evaluating the collapse susceptibility of an area is a challenging task. This study proposes a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach, named as K-Nearest Neighbor Based Bayesian Classifier (KNNBC), to deal with slope collapse assessment. In the proposed model, Bayesian inference is used as a framework to achieve probabilistic prediction of slope collapse. Meanwhile, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) is employed as a density estimation technique. Equipped with probabilistic outputs, the K-NNBC is able to yield predictions with different levels of confidence and diminish misclassified cases. Experimental results point out that the proposed model is very helpful for decision-makers in slope collapse assessment and disaster prevention planning.

Ultramafic soils display high concentrations of nickel (Ni) and a number of nutrient deficiencies (e.g. N, K, P). Ni-hyperaccumulator plants have evolved on such environments, developed specific metal homeostasis showing concentrations of Ni sometimes above 1% in their aerial biomass (Baker & Brooks 1989). Alyssum murale, a Ni-hyperaccumulator, is commonly found around the Mediterranean but can grow on non-ultramafic soils as well, with an altitudinal extension ranging from sea level to 2000 m.a.s.l. Rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with Ni-hyperaccumulator plants can differ from those of non-accumulating plants growing at the same site. Among edaphic factors that could influence the phylogenetic structure of the bacterial communities, altitude and metal-bioavailability and in particular nickel could be significant. However, most studies have focused on analyzing soils with techniques that provide little detail about the phylogenetic structure of these bacterial communities present in ultramafic soils. The objectives of this study were to understand the specific changes in the structure of A. murale rhizosphere bacterial community that occur across two gradients: 1°) elevation and 2°) Ni geochemistry, using pyrosequencing technique (454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene). It was found that the higher the soil chemically-available Ni contents, the higher the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. On the contrary, the abundance of TM7 decreased with increasing levels of available Ni. Moreover, Chloroflexi was present with 53 to 77% of relative abundance. These results demonstrate that soil chemically-available Ni drives the bacterial community diversity in the rhizosphere of Alyssum murale regardless the elevation gradient and other different soil physicochemical parameters. These results should now be confirmed in different ultramafic edaphic environments worldwide (e.g. ultramafic lateritic covers) and in the rhizosphere of different hyperaccumulator taxa.

"Crack initiation stress is one of the characteristic stress thresholds in the rock deformation process under compression. By analyzing AE responses of brittle rocks in uniaxial compression, a new method which is called cumulative AE hit (CAEH) method is proposed for determining the crack initiation stress. An advantage of the CAEH method is that the method removes the user's subjective judgment. To verify the CAEH method, uniaxial compression tests with AE measurement using 77 crystalline rock specimens were conducted. The test specimens cover eight rock classes with different mineral grain distributions. Crack initiation stresses of these specimens were determined by the proposed CAEH method and the LSR method, and the resulting mean crack initiation stresses determined using the two methods were comparable. In addition, taking one rock class with 20 specimens for example, the mean crack initiation stresses determined using the CAEH method and those from several established strain-based and AE-based methods were similar. Hence, the CAEH method can be used as an alternative method for crack initiation stress determination.INTRODUCTIONExperimental observations indicate that the failure process of brittle rocks is associated with crack initiation, crack propagation, crack damage and final strain localization (Brace et al., 1966; Bieniawski, 1967; Lockner, 1993; Wawersik & Fairhurst, 1970). Compression tests on cylindrical specimen are often used to characterize the crack development process. The crack initiation stress (sci), crack damage stress (scd), and peak stress (sc) represent important stress thresholds during the failure process of brittle rocks. Among the three characteristic stress magnitudes, sci is difficult to be determined objectively, directly from examining the stress–strain curves. Some researchers argued that sci obtained from laboratory compression tests is an important parameter for estimating the spalling failure observed in brittle rocks around underground excavations (Andersson et al., 2009; Diederichs, 2007; Martin, 1997). sci can also be used to estimate rock tensile strength and Hoek-Brown failure criterion parameter mi (Cai, 2010). Over the last 40 years, various strain-based methods have been proposed to determine the crack initiation stress in compression tests (Brace et al., 1966; Diederichs, 2007; Eberhardt et al., 1998; Lajtai, 1974; Martin & Chandler, 1994; Stacey, 1981). Nicksiar and Martin (2012) proposed a Lateral Strain Response (LSR) method for establishing sci for low-porosity rocks. Meanwhile, they also used different strain-based methods to evaluate sci of Äspö diorite, and the results showed that all strain-based methods gave acceptable crack initiation stress values. Subsequently, they utilized the LSR method to further investigate the crack initiation stresses in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks in compression tests (Nicksiar & Martin, 2013). Compared with previously proposed strain-based methods, an advantage of the LSR method is that it removes the user judgment when interpreting sci. However, the use of the LSR method relies on accurate determination of scd and on having a polynomial fitting equation to find the maximum LSR value."

Introduction Several basins of the Nanaimo series, a group of coal-bearing sedimentary rocks of Upper Cretaceous age, underlie parts of Vancouver island and the adjacent gulf islands. One, the Nanaimo basin, occurs on the southern half of the west shore of the gulf of Georgia. About fifty square miles at the north end of this basin are known to be underlain by productive coal seams, this area being known as the Nanaimo coal field. Coal has been mined from two horizons- that of the Wellington seam, fairly low in the series, and that of the Newcastle and Douglas seams, about the middle of the series. Coal has been mined here since the fall of 1852. About fifty million tons have been produced, almost half the total production of British Columbia. About seventy-two years ago, James Richardson of the Geological Survey made a reconnaissance of the coal measures on Vancouver island, and thirty-five years ago C. H. Clapp mapped and reported on most of the Nanaimo coal field. Twenty-four years ago, J. D. MacKenzie extended the work to those areas not mapped by Clapp. MacKenzie died before the results of his work could be published, but did issue a revised estimate of the Goal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island. Work by the present writer is a further contribution by the Geological Survey to knowledge of the island coal measures. Having spent more time in the field, and having had more data at his disposal than were available to his predecessors, the writer has been able to throw additional light on the Nanaimo, and other, coal fields on Vancouver island. "The operating cost of a gold mine employing granular activated carbon to recover gold can be greatly affected by the condition of in-circuit carbon and its attrition losses. To accurately identify and quantify carbon losses requires careful study. Carbon attrition in the mill can be attributed mainly to physical or mechanical breakage due to the transfer of carbon in the circuit and to carbon oxidation and thermal fracture occurring in the carbon reactivation kiln. Of the equipment involved in carbon transfer, the water powered eductors are the major cause of abrasion and should be replaced with pumps or alternate methods that can serve the purpose. This paper also reviews the impact of carbon stripping and washing on overall operations.IntroductionHolt-McDermott Mine operates a 1360 tonnes per day Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) mill to recover gold. The relatively high carbon consumption and high remaining gold values on carbon after stripping were viewed as a challenging project for research. Extensive metallurgical testwork was initiated to reduce these values. Figure 1 below indicates the carbon flowchart prior to any significant changes in the carbon handling procedures.Carbon consumption after commissioning which was as high as 10""/o of carbon eluted, has been brought down to less than 5%. "When the Canadian uranium milling plants went into operation during the early 1950's, they utilized flowsheets developed at the Radioactivity Division of the Federal Mines Branch in Ottawa. Since then, numerous process improvements have been made by the Mines Branch, by the operating companies themselves and by other research organizations. This paper will consider uranium milling technology from the standpoint of a new mine operator charged with the responsibility for the design of an economic flowsheet, and will indicate the range of process elements available to him and the testwork required to enable an intelligent decision to be made."

"Compound casting is a very attractive approach to reduce the weight of components for some specific applications while keep both the functional and the mechanical property requirements. In this work, Al-7Si-Mg alloy /copper compound castings were produced through a low pressure die casting process. To reduce the oxide present in the interface, flux coating of the copper pipes was tested. The interface layer formed between the two alloys was investigated using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Vickers Micro-hardness was also measured across the interface. Results showed that the flux coating prevented the formation of the metallic bond between copper and aluminum. Instead, high concentrations of potassium, magnesium and fluoride, coinciding with formation of KMgF3 and MgF2, were detected in the interface. In the castings without surface treatment, a continuous metallurgical bond was achieved. In the bond layer, various Al-Cu intermetallic phases have been detected. In addition, formation of primary silicon particles in the reaction layer was observed in all castings. The mechanism for the formation of the intermetallic phases and the strength of the interface layer have been discussed.INTRODUCTION Recent development in the automotive industry has focused on producing lightweight components, which can reduce CO2 emission and increase the efficiency. Often, one material alone is not able to meet the requirements for a specific use. The need for lightweight bimetallic components has therefore increased. Aluminum-copper bimetallic components can be used in wires and bus bars where conductivity is an important factor (Lee, Bang, & Jung, 2005). Compared to Al-Cu alloys, Al-Cu bimetallic components can reduce both weight and cost without reducing electrical and thermal conductivity (Sheng, Yang, Xi, Lai, & Ye, 2011). A challenge is, however, that aluminum and copper have high affinity to each other, especially at elevated temperatures. This causes formation of brittle intermetallic phases with high electric resistance (Liu, Wang, Sui, Wang, & Wenjiang, 2016). In addition, both metals are subjected to oxide formation on the surface. Copper is especially exposed to oxidation at elevated temperatures (Pinnel, Tompkins, & Heath, 1979), while a thermodynamically stable oxide layer will spontaneously form on the aluminum surface (Papis, Loeffler, & Uggowitzer, 2009). Oxides are known to be passive substrates, which will reduce wettability and will thus prevent the formation of metallic bonding between aluminum and copper (Papis, Hallstedt, Löffler, & Uggowitzer, 2008)."

Minera Sabinas in central Mexico treats a complex sulfide ore containing galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite as valuable minerals, and in some cases important amounts of non-magnetic pyrrhotite. For high pyrrhotite ores, results obtained by selective flotation showed good grades and recoveries in the lead-copper circuit, but a commercial zinc concentrate could not be produced due to the high floatability of pyrrhotite. When this is the case, an alternative method was proposed to produce a bulk concentrate by flotation which is then leached to recover copper and zinc from liquor in a SX-EW circuit. Leaching was conducted in an autoclave in order to study the effect of temperature and pressure, but bioleaching tests were also conducted. Leaching lead-silver residues were treated by cyanidation in order to recover silver values. The results obtained by selective flotation and by bulk flotation with leaching of the bulk concentrate showed that the latter alternative increased zinc recovery by 30 % with similar recoveries of the other metals.

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. During the last decade Antofagasta Minerals? Los Pelambres Mine has dramatically increased its ore throughput following the fast initial phase ramp up through a series of planned incremental expansions. The original 85,000 mtpd, two SAG line plant was commissioned in 1999 and rapidly exceeded nameplate tonnage in only a few months. Following this, the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit resulted in throughputs in excess of 114,000 mtpd and a recent, final third line SAG and ball mill addition have taken the plant to over 175,000 mtpd even with increasing ore hardness and changing ore feed characteristics. The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.

Gold passivation in thiosulfate leaching media is a major barrier to its implementation. Addition of Cu (II) into the leaching solution has shown to aid in gold dissolution, but the mechanism by which it acts, and its role in the passive layer, remains unknown. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), in tandem with linear sweep voltammetry, were employed to determine the dependence of leaching currents on mass transport and for fingerprint identification of sulfur species on the surface of gold. SERS leaching experiments were performed using gold nanorod electrodes that showed increased stability compared to other SERS active surfaces.

"Coupon testing has been used to investigate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of rockbolts in a laboratory based experimental program. This program has focused on the use of ASTM G39 three- and four-point bent beam coupon specimens, immersed in an acidified sodium chloride test solution containing hydrogen sulfide. The specimens were loaded to a range of stresses from zero, to just above the materials yield strength. It was found that only specimens above an applied stress of 580MPa failed by means of SCC, showing that rockbolts loaded to near their yield strength may be susceptible to SCC in-situ.INTRODUCTIONStress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a failure mechanism that affects material through the growth of hairline cracks when exposed to a corrosive medium while under stress (Jones and Ricker, 1999). SCC has been found to affect rockbolts in the Australian underground coal mining industry and has the capacity to cause the catastrophic failure of ground support systems, potentially leading to falls of ground in underground excavations, injury or death to mine personnel, damage or loss of equipment, and loss of productivity through the loss of roadway access (Crosky et al, 2002).Coupon testing utilises small scale samples that are intended to be indicative of the behaviour exhibited by a material in-situ (ASTM G39). The small scale, and usually high surface area to volume ratio of coupon specimens mean that they corrode at faster rate proportional to their mass, greatly reducing testing times. The small scale of the specimens allows them to be more easily prepared and handled, loaning them to mass manufacturing techniques.A previous study conducted by Vandermaat et al (2012b) into the use of three- and four-point coupon testing in-situ in an underground coal mine failed to result in SCC of the specimens. This paper serves as a follow up laboratory investigation in order to understand why these specimens did not fail. Previous studies into the SCC in rockbolts carried out by Gamboa and Atrens (2003) determined that rockbolt steel has a critical stress threshold of approximately 90% of the material ultimate tensile strength (800-900MPa). This study will focus on this critical stress threshold as a possible explanation for the lack of failure in the in-situ specimens (Vandermaat, 2012b)."
