"AbstractProduction from the Excelsior Reservoir has amounted to approximately one million barrels. This production has caused a 'Pressure •drop of 10 p.s.i. from the original pressure of 1,245 p.s.i.g. Volumetric balance calculations indicate that the pool as being produced by a water drive whose strength is •probably unsurpassed in Western Canada. It has also been shown by 'unsteady state' calculations that the reservoir will still be above the saturation pressure of 915 p.s.i.g. at the time of depletion. The average permeability of the producing formation is approximately 1,000 millidarcys and, consequently, well draw-downs are very low. The field is essentially a bottom-water drive and calculations have shown that gravity drainage will greatly assist the recovery of oil. Water flooding data on several cores •have placed the flushing efficiency at •approximately 50 per cent, which indicates a recoverable oil-in-place of 17.7 million stock tank barrels. Calculations and field data indicate that the MER for the early life of this field is probably as high as 8,000 to 10,000 stock tank barrels per day.IntroductionTHE EXCELSIOR NISKU oil reservoir is located about twenty miles northeast of Edmonton. The field was discovered in November, 1949, by Imperial Excelsior N.o.1 well, in Lsd. 13, Sec. 3, Twp. 56, R. 22, W. 4, at a depth of 3,850 feet.Since discovery, development has continued on a 40~acre spacing pattern. At the end of 1951, drilling over approximately 80 per cent of the estimated productive area of 1,680 acres had established 32 we1ls capable •of production. At present there is considerable confusion in the asbestos industry with regard to density and porosity measurements of asbestos. In order to clarify the situation, various notions of porosity and density are defined by means of simple schemes and clear symbols are proposed to denote them. An experimental procedure is then preposed and outlined, which is based upon Archimedes' principle. Experimental conditions at each stage of the method are explained clearly in order to minimize the opportunity for errors. Finally, the results of a study on the porosity and density of asbestos minerals having various characteristics are presented.

Archaeometallurgical remains can be a valuable source of information about past technological activities and, by inference, the societies that undertook them. Material traces of former metal-producing or metal-working centres can include raw materials, products, or metallurgical installations such as mines, furnaces or forges. Of these remains, the most common is slag, often left undisturbed since its original production. Physical and chemical analyses of archaeological slag and metal can often reveal the processes and materials involved in their formation. Mineral composition and softening temperature of a slag, for instance, can indicate the conditions of the metallurgical operation, such as temperature and atmosphere and, thus, help identify metallurgical processes which took place at a site(1). The present report illustrates the value of such analysis. Metal-working remains from Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, near Midland, Ontario, on the south side of Georgian Bay have been analyzed in order to determine the techniques and processes used by the 17th-century blacksmith who worked at the mission headquarters from 1642 to 1649. Samples were selected from a very large collection of blacksmith refuse which was excavated from the site by archaeologist Kenneth Kidd in 1941-42(2).

"In late 1985, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited announced the Namew Mine/Mill project. Environmental baseline monitoring and planning began in early 1985 while a major drilling program was under way to delineate the ore deposit. This paper overviews the environmental assessment work conducted for the mine/mill operation, and outlines the tailings and water management practices.Planned environmental works and approach were affected in late 1988 when a massive water problem was encountered in the mine. The requirement to depressurize the rock surrounding the underground workings led to the need to develop, on short notice, an environmentally-acceptable procedure to dispose of a large volume of slightly-saline water.Biological toxicity tests performed on the depressurized effluent proved the effluent to be non-toxic and thus allowed resolution of the disposal problem. This resolution includes the conversion of a large water body from native fish species to a rainbow trout fishery."

"After cooling and thickening, slurry from the second stage of the Hudbay zinc pressure leach circuit is filtered and washed on a belt filter prior to disposal. At times, the belt filter can be a bottleneck to the process. Preliminary studies show that filterability of the second-stage (HAL) autoclave leach residue can be indicated by particle size distribution of the filter feed and filtered residue cake. In particular, the Volume Weighted Mean Diameter, D[4,3], generated by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer from samples of HAL Filter feed, shows residues that filter more poorly have a lower Volume Weighted Mean Diameter than those that filter better. INTRODUCTIONHudbay produces cast zinc metal from blends of zinc concentrates at its metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, using Sherritt’s two-stage pressure leach process (Collins et al., 1994; Collins et al., 1995; Barth et al., 1998; Shairp et al., 2006). Pressure leaching replaced the original roastleach- electrowinning process in 1993.Filtration for the second-stage (HAL) leach residue originally consisted of two stages of vacuum drum filtration with intermediate cake repulping stirred tanks. As part of Hudbay’s 777 Project, with a designed increase in cast zinc production, a pre-feasibility study by SNC-Lavalin Inc. showed that losses of soluble zinc in the zinc pressure leach residue could be reduced by installing more efficient filtering and washing equipment. Based on laboratory performance, capital cost, installation ability, and potential operating cost savings, a 70 m2 Filtres Phillipe belt filter was chosen for the HAL residue, and commissioned in 2000/2001.When the HAL belt filter is performing well, there is no pooling of water on the surface, moisture content is relatively low, and subsequent analysis shows that water soluble zinc content is relatively low. "A series of new, grease-based, solvent free open gear lubricants were developed to meet the demanding service requirements of mining equipment. The use of these products has resulted in better performance under conditions of temperature extremes and in terms of longer component lives. They have gained widespread acceptance within the mining communities for such applications as the lubrication of mining shovels, draglines and ball mills.These products are WHMIS non-controlled and are environmentally acceptable. The benefits and advantages of using this type of product to lubricate mining equipment as well as the field evaluation and experience will be discussed."

This paper briefly describes some of the phenomena encountered when materials are submitted to extremely high pressures, such as those produced by the detonation of an explosive charge placed in contact with the material. It was found that extensive changes take place in the? microstructure of iron and steel. Diffusion-controlled processes, such as the transformation of lamellar pearlite, the recrystallization and grain growth of ferrite, and the homogenization of the pearlite-ferrite structure, can take place within micro-or milliseconds. Mechanical twins can propagate without deviation from ferrite to pearlite, thus indicating a proeutectoid ferrite-pearlite-ferrite orientation relationship. The propagation and interaction of intense stress waves in materials was demonstrated with the use of Armco iron. Finally, a comparison is made of the damage produced in metals by the formation of craters made by explosive shock and by hypervelocity impact. Despite the phase-out of earned depletion allowances for most oil and gas operations as part of the federal government's new National Energy Program, earned depletion provisions are still alive and well for the mining sector, although they might well be slowly strangling to death in their own entanglement of complexity!"

AT the Eagle mine, near Gilman, Colorado, where the Empire Zinc Company have installed an underground mill, transportation problems were comparatively simple. A railway siding on the Denver and Rio Grande railway is equipped with an unloading dock or platform at the portal of their service incline adit to the mill. This 18-degree incline is approximately 600 feet long from the unloading track to the head of the mill skipway. For the Big Missouri mill, upwards of 2,500 tons of material and equipment had to be trucked from tidewater at Stewart, B.C., a distance of 21 miles to the Big Missouri camp at elevation 2,800. From that point, this freight had to be moved either over or through the Big Missouri ridge, rising to elevation 3,450, to its final location 800 feet from the surface between elevations 2,150 and 2,350. Immediately after leaving the government dock at Stewart, the road crosses the International boundary line into Hyder, Alaska, and then follows a water grade for eleven miles along the lower stretches of the Salmon river. leaving the river, the road climbs for two miles before crossing back into British Columbia territory at Silver Heights, and then continues for another mile and a half to where the Big Missouri road branches off from the main road to the Premier mine. For a distance of four miles from the junction of the roads, the Missouri road is very narrow, with many sharp curves and with irregular up and down pitches and grades up to 25 per cent until it reaches the Summit. From there on, a fairly easy grade leads a mile and a half to the end of the road on Joker Plats. In winter, the last stretch of road is subject to heavy snow drifting, especially through a narrow funnel-shaped gulch, known as 'The Gap', where the snow may pile up to a depth of over twenty feet.

"The Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy located a drillhole at Riverside Corner, Hants County, Nova Scotia, to examine the stratigraphy, structure and potash potential of the Kennetcook River gravity low. This evaporite-related gravity anomaly is one of the largest virtually unexplored gravity anomalies in Nova Scotia. The drillhole intersected a structurally complex sequence o flower Windsor Group ('B' Subzone) evaporites. Downhole geophysical wireline logs were used, in conjunction with detailed lithological descriptions, to interpret the structure and stratigraphy of the sequence. Similar application of total gamma ray, density, caliper and neutron-neutron log responses allows stratigraphic correlation of Windsor Group carbonate marker units separated by up to 35 km in Cape Breton. This work confirms the value of downhole geophysical logs as a tool in the exploration of evaporite deposits regardless of the presence or absence of high quality core. INTRODUCTIONThe exploration methodology for evaporite (specifically salt/potash) deposits in eastern Canada (and worldwide) is relatively simple: identify a negative gravity anomaly within a favourable geological setting, Windsor/Cordroy Group sediments in eastern Canada, and drill it (Anderle, 1980). Although this is an obvious oversimplification of the necessary expertise in the planning and complet ion of an exploration program, those familiar with potash exploration drilling can attest to the risks and expense, in terms of time and problems , associated with the location and drilling of diamond-drill wildcat holes. Potash exploration programs in eastern Canada, their results and inherent difficulties, have been documented by Anderle et al. (1979), Cooper (1981), Dekker (1982), Carter and Boehner (1986), Carter (1988) and Carter and Anderle (in prep .).Downhole geophysical wireline logs have become an important tool in the stratigraphic and structural interpretation of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada and, in many cases, represent the only information recovered or the only information available due to the drilling method (rotary) and/or the long term instability of evaporite cores. This paper documents examples of downhole geophysical log responses which, combined with detailed lithological examination of drill core, or in the absence of core, are used in the interpretation of the complex lithology and structure of a deformed evaporite deposit. Geological and geophysical data from the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (NSDME) Riverside Corner 85-1 drillhole are presented here as a partial case history and prime example of the use of this method to interpret the complex structure of an evaporite deposit. Drilling of NSDME Riverside Comer 85-1 was conducted in late 1985and early 1986by the Department (Carter and Boehner, 1986) under a program to assess the potash potential of selected areas of the province as part of the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement 1985-89. A reinterpretation of a portion of the available data from two exploration drilling projects on Cape Breton Island in the Canso-Bras d'Or area is also presented (see inset, Fig. I). Several drillholes have intersected the Windsor Group evaporite sequence in these areas and the available geophysical logs are a valuable tool in the interpretation of the structure of the deposits. However, no attempt has been made to present or discuss the detailed geological investigation and comparison of these two deposits. They are presented here as an example of the reinterpretation of existing data and their application to stratigraphic correlation and structural interpretation of complex evaporite deposits. Further work is necessary to document the stratigraphic and structural correlation of these two areas."

"LocationThe Key Lake operation of Cameco Corporation is located at latitude 57°N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southem boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest city is LaRonge, located 240 km to the south. Access to the mine is by all-weather road and by private airstrip.Description of OperationThe mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8. Current production is fourteen million pounds from 2.0% feed.Following grinding, the uranium is leached using sulphuric acid and oxygen in autoclaves. An eight thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium-bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium in solution is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit. The purified uranium is then precipitated using ammonia, calcined at 840°C, and packaged in drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover excess ammonium sulphate produced in the process, and a waste treatment circuit.HistoryUranerz Exploration and Mining discovered the Gaertner and Deilmann orebodies in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Between 1975 and 1977, Uranerz conducted laboratory studies and delineated a process for the Key Lake ore known as the ""Bonn process."" In 1977, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. was retained to conduct further studies in cooperation with U ranerz. The technical feasibility of the Bonn process was generally confirmed. Howeve1~ alternative processing methods also appeared feasible, and over the period 1978-1979, a detailed research and development program was conducted to finalize the processes to be used and to provide data for design of the plant."

Four conditions are commonly accepted as being needed for the development of native sulphur deposits in sedimentary rocks : (1) ample sulphate-bearing evaporite, normally anhydritic; (2) proximity to petroleum deposits; (3) a hydrodynamic system of communication between these two; (4) a stratigraphic or structural trap to prevent escape of the sulphur and sulphur -bearing reaction products. When any of these requisites are absent, apparently no significant residual bio-epigenetic sulphur deposit will form. These requirements are, however, satisfied in some areas, which include both the Triassic and Devonian evaporites of northeastern British Columbia.

"Geerite (Cu1.6S) is a rhombohedral copper sulphide which occurs naturally in epitactic replacement of sphalerite; cell dimensions closely approximate those of the host sphalerite.Geerite-type structures can be produced by leaching digenite (Cu1.8S) in ferric sulphate solutions. X -ray diffract ion and electron microprobe studies indicate that eight metastable geeritetype structures can be produced, depending upon the concentration of f erric sulphate solution used and the duration of the each. Although compositions cluster on or near values observed for natural phases, optical properties indicate that we are dealing with polymorphs of these phases. Leaching of chalcocite (CU2Sj in dilute f erric sulphate solutions produces similar results. In contrast, leaching of chalcocite in more concentrated solutions seems to produce true analogues of natural minerals.During froth flotation, sphalerite is activated with a monolayer of floatable copper sulphide with the composition, CuS, of the mineral covellite. However, covellite is not significantly more floatable than sphalerite, and has an incompatible structure because of the presence of covalently-bonded atoms of sulphur. Leaching ofdigenite was used to produce a polymorph of covellite with a geerite-type structure, compatible with that of sphalerite. This polymorph has a flotational behaviour similar to copper-activated sphalerite, suggesting that the monolayer has a geerite-type CuS structure. IntroductionIn an ideal close-packed sulphide structure the distance between sulphur layers, D, is equal to 2R 2/3, where R is the radius of the sulphur atoms. In sulphides with covalently-bonded sulphur layers, such as covellite (Fig. I), D will be an average of the number of covalentl y-bonded and close-packed sulphur layers, weighted as to the relative number of each type of layer. Both D and R are spacings which are readily identifiable structurally and on X-ray diffraction patterns. Goblel has shown that for copper-iron sulphides with metal-to-sulphur ratios between 0 and 2 and copper-to-total metal ratio s between 113 and I there are strong correlations between composition and measured D and R distances (Fig. 2). D can be represented by a single empirical equation relating interlayer spacing to composition; R must be represented by three equations relating the radius of sulphur atoms to composition. One of these equations (R, in Fig. 2) represents ideal close-packed behaviour, the other two represent sulphur radii greater than (R1) or less than (Rh) the ideal."

"Heap leaching, currently being applied in the treatment of low-grade ores in the south western United States, is shown to have potential for use in north western Ontario. The history and operation of the process are described, and cost comparisons are given.IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering gold from low-grade ore. Although it is not currently being used in Canada on a production scale, it is being used extensively, and successfully, in the southwestern United States as well as elsewhere in the world. Especially suited for large deposits of very low -grade ore, it also appears to be practical for use on small, high-grade deposits because it avoids the high capital costs of mills. Eveleth (1980) and others suggest that the capital and operating costs required for heap leaching are approximately 20% and 40% respectively of conventional milling methods.Northwestern Ontario is noted for its large number of undeveloped, small, high-grade gold deposits. Although there are a number o f larger and higher-grade deposits in the area as well, it is the relatively small undeveloped deposits which would benefit most from heap leaching, if it could be demonstrated to be a viable extraction method.To assess the significance of these small deposits, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources recently commissioned a consultants' study of the gold reserves in certain parts of northwestern Ontario. This report, titled ""Feasibility of Small-Scale Gold Mining in Northwestern Ontario"", by J.N. Neilson and R.C.E. Bray (1981, OGS Open File Report 5332), documents 106 known gold deposits having sufficient information to calculate gold reserves. A total of over 7.8 million tons having a weighted average grade of 0.19 oz of gold per ton were compiled in the proven, probable and possible categories, with an additional 8.2 million tons in the speculative category. Many of these deposits could be mined by open-pit methods."

"The mine operator has two prime objectives when he operates a mine: (l) the mine must be safe, and (2) the mine must operate with the lowest possible costs. The operator constantly faces a dilemma; if he is over cautious with regard to safety, his costs may be very high, and if he is over-zealous in trying to reduce costs, the safety of his operation may be jeopardized.Modern bulk mining methods rely heavily on high productivity non-entry stoping techniques (e.g. open stoping, VCR, etc.). Such techniques have the advantage of removing the operator from the active and sometimes dangerous mining face and ofminimizing costly development. On the other hand, this generally results in a certain loss of flexibility in following irregular ore-waste contacts. If stopes are opened too large and/or are inadequately supported, severe dilution with resulting escalating costs usually results. If initial access drift support is inadequate for latter mine induced stresses high rehabilitation costs may also be incurred.Optimization of stope dimensions should logically occur as part of a general mine rock engineering program, within the over-all mine planning context. The same program should help highlight those areas where drift rehabilitation may be a problem.Whenever successful mining is performed, rock engineering is being applied, either by design or by chance. The cost implications of planned practical rock engineering as an integral part of mine planning and design can be very significant to the ultimate mining ""bottom line"". At Noranda Minerals Inc. allowable stope dimensions are derived using a combination of numerical stress analysis and empirical design techniques. This paper discusses the use of the above techniques and their limitations as tools for rock mechanics based stope dimension optimization. The potential cost implications of such design efforts within the general mine planning context are also addressed."

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. "This paper reviews the types of selective continuous miners (SCMs) available at present, and compares their main features. Furthermore, operating practices and mine planning aspects of the SCMs applications are reviewed and conditions for efficient application of this equipment are defined. Finally, the potential applications of the SCMs in surf ace mining of oil sands are discussed INTRODUCTIONIn the 1970s the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a program of investigations, design and demonstration of various continuous surface mining concepts, This included continuous mining equipment which was an adaptation of several civil engineering and/or underground mining machinery concepts to surface mining. Upon termination of this program, the related development was continued by a number of equipment manufacturers, leading to development of several types of SCMs. This new type of surface mining equipment is able to mine selectively hard and thin multi-layered formations at high, sustained, and economically viable production rates.While used mostly in coal mining at present, the characteristic features of this equipment permit conclusion that it may prove to be an efficient tool for surface mining of oil sand, and/or related overburden stripping. Of particular interest here may be the ability to mine thin layers of hard material, without a need for its earlier fragmentation, and the ability of the SCMs to load a variety of haulage equipment, including belt conveyors."

Many gold deposits in the world have not been developed clue to the presence of copper and other base metals which can cause metallurgical and environmental challenges clue to the formation of base metal cyanide complexes. SART technology (sulphidization-acidification-recycle-thickening) can resolve these issues by recovering copper as a high grade sulphide concentrate, recycling the associated cyanide back to the gold leach, and eliminating the downstream environmental liabilities. Project economics can be improved substantially, leading to a positive re-evaluation of new and existing gold-copper projects. Some aspects of the design and operation of two recently commissioned SART plants will be discussed.
