The metallurgical testwork program is generally the most important critical path item for the completion of a bankable feasibility study and hence can become the critical parameter for financing of potential mining projects. This paper presents generic detailed testwork programs suitable for bankable feasibility studies for a gold leaching and polymetallic flotation study. The design of the metallurgical testwork program for each of the two differing processes is discussed and the critical factors that effect the selection of the testwork programs are highlighted. The importance of the metallurgical testwork results in predicting the metal recoveries and cash flow prediction for the project is presented. The detail of the testwork programs costing is broken into activity based methods based on the laboratory and management hours/costs, such that generic rule of thumb costing guidelines can be generated. The scheduling, costing and importance of the metallurgical testwork program to process feasibility studies are discussed in this paper.

The total systems model for underground oal mining planning and design is a set of omputer programs which encompasses a realis- ic reproduction of the interaction between he geological, environmental, equipment, meth- ds and the health and safety aspects of the ining plan. The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

Finding a balance between practical and acceptable groundwater management, and providing for the needs and impacts of mining developments remains a challenge. The changes that accompanied the recent implementation of water reforms have provided greater flexibility for the water manager and greater certainty for the resource user. However uncertainty associated with understanding of complex aquifer systems, balanced against providing for the needs of mining developments, the rights of existing water resource users and expectations of the broader community have not diminished the conflicting issues faced by water resource managers and resource developers. Licensing under the Water Act 2000 provides the regulatory link with the taking of water for water supply purposes or as a consequence of the mining activity. This paper outlines key elements of sustainable water resource management involving certainty of access to water and adaptive environmental management that are delivered through conditioning the water licences issued for the particular mining development. Implementation of this approach is illustrated through a case study involving the BHP Billiton Cannington Mine in North West Queensland.

Tanking of tunnels is now often specified when inflows exceed as little as 1 L/s/km with a unit distance of 100 m. To demonstrate inflows over a 100 m segment of a tunnel are less than 0.1 L/s with a standard error of 0.01 L/s by timed, gravity filled, volume measurement up and downstream of the segment, the measuring cylinder volume (L) must exceed 10 Q, where Q is the flow in L/s, and the number measurements taken and averaged must exceed 20 . If a standard error of 0.02 L/s is acceptable then 5Q2 measurements must be taken and averaged. The Key Centre for Mines consists of the School of Mines of the University of New South Wales and the Departments of Geology and Civil and Mining Engineering of Wollongong University. The Key Centre for Mines/International promotes, markets and develops overseas activities in applied geology, mining engineering, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy specifically in response to the perceived needs in the region for mineral resource and other related earth-science based development. the Key Centre for Mines/International will be involved in the overseas marketing of formal courses; special training activities such as short courses and in-house programs; technical and educational consultancy; research and development projects, and in the establishment of regional links through twinning, exchange and various network arrangements with other organisations in the region. Activities which are now being developed include a training program for Korean mining engineers and geologists, teaching and curriculum development in the Mineral Resources Engineering Faculty of the University Sains Malaysia and a staff development proposal for the Department of Geotechnology of Khon Kaen University, Thailand

Conceptually coal reserve assessment is simple but in practice it presents many problems. These arise from the origin and geological history of coal seams and from the diverse nature of the coal itself. The suitability of a coal for a particular use depends upon its type and so sheer quantity of reserves does not guarantee the adequacy of coal reserves for all requirements. Codes have been formulated to counteract the effects of subjectivity in reserve assessment. The code for calculating and reporting coal reserves published by the Standing Committee on Coalfield Geology of New South Wales has wide acceptance but the Committee itself recognises that it has shortcomings. Currently the Committee is engaged on the commendable but difficult endeavour of formulating a code that will meet the needs of scientific rigour and professional and commercial ethics and that will allow the specification of an assessment method without constraining it. It is generally agreed in the coal industry that the assessment of coal reserves can not conveniently be incorporated into codes formulated for other resources.

Each technological process can be reduced on the transport networks, and namely on the parametric networks and the non-parametric ones. The parametric networks are created by the piping, electrical cables or channels. The non-parametric network is created by the ways, suspended grooves, trackages and also by the belt conveyors or other conveyors for continuous material transport. If we reduce the technological process on transport networks, then, by the creation of these networks models and their mutual interconnection we obtain the model of the whole technological process. The model can be understood as the universal one, without exaggeration, because it is valid for any technological process. However, for us the mining production process is important what represents the mining and transport of raw materials under the support of the ensuring system. In this contribution one of the first attempt is described, and namely how to connect the parametric network which has been already worked out very properly with the non-parametric network what is presented in this contribution by the transport line of belt conveyors.

Commonly held ideas about effective training have long emphasised the importance of realism. Realistic training builds better experience among the trainees and a better perspective on the training material, making training more effective. While great strides have been made in this realm for mine safety and mine rescue training there are still areas that can be improved. One possible area is the expanded use of a mine fire simulation program where the migration of gases and smoke can be realistically displayed in an emergency, and outcomes varied as different conditions are being simulated. The use of mine fire simulation software potentially allows for the creation of more realistic scenarios in that smoke advance rates can be measured and recreated in evacuation scenarios, or that gas readings in mine rescue training can be dynamically and realistically changed to show the effect that time has on the fire scenario.CITATION:Slaughter, C and Tien, J C, 2015. Since 1975 two electric hydraulic drills, a Robbins 11ND and an Atlas Copco C0P1038, have been part of the production drilling fleet at Mount Isa Mines Limited's Isa Mine. As might be expected with innovative and technically more complex machines, breakdowns and mainten- ance problems have been greater than those experienced with pneumatic drifters. This has been especially so with the COP1038 but in co-operation with Atlas Copco, many modific- ations have been made to alleviate operating problems. The training and quality of the maintenance workforce is of great importance. The use of coloured pictorial diagrams for hydraulic trouble-shooting will aid in minimising maintenance downtime. Both machines have achieved good operator acceptance. This is the result of many factors, the major ones being the more acceptable environmental conditions, the relatively low amount of physical effort and the high degree of mechanisation. The drilling area is one in which there is great potential for cost savings and product- ivity gains. Because both machines are capable of a high drilling output, Isa Mine is confident of achieving these aims.

The 1980s witnessed a major revolution in the application of airborne geophysics to mineral exploration. The now commonplace term `high resolution aeromagnetics' (HRA) evolved from advances in survey specifications, instrumentation, data processing and imaging techniques which greatly improved the quality and geological information content of the final maps. Although initially HRA was successfully applied in `hard rock' basement terrains, eg the Archaean Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, the technique along with the radiometric and electromagnetic techniques is now gaining wide acceptance in all geological terrains including inaccessible sedimentary rock dominated mountain belts such as New Guinea for mineral and petroleum exploration. It is also being used in more and more diverse roles away from exploration, such as environmental monitoring. The main reason for this acceptance is of course the very cost-effective surface and sub-surface mapping capabilities of the various airborne techniques. Although the three main techniques (magnetic, radiometric and electromagnetic) have been in use for some time, they are continuously being improved. The Clermont Goldfield, from which about 300,000 oz of bullion have been extracted, was one of the major gold producers in Queensland. This paper is derived from a systematic study of the mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotope geochemistry of the deposit, based on detailed field work and logging of 57 reverse-circulation percussion drilling holes at the Black Ridge Gold Deposit (Fig 1), aimed at addressing the long debated question of gold-ore genesis at Clermont, i.e., whether it is of fossil placer or hydrothermal origin.Detailed petrologic and mineralogical studies indicate the hydrothermal alteration at Black Ridge is dominated by extensive siderite (+rhodochrosite-ankerite) veinlets and stockworks, which are concentrated along the deformed unconformity between the Anakie Metamorphics and basal conglomerates of the early Permian Blair Athol Coal Measures. Siderite alteration is also moderately developed in all other rock units represented at Black Ridge, including the Tertiary basalt. Weak to moderate phyllosilicate alteration is common throughout the deposit, including chlorite-sericite along the shear zone of the unconformity, and sericite-clay in the conglomerates. A sulphide-oxides zonation also has occurred, including pyrite below the unconformity, (pyrite)-chalcopyrite-marcasite-(hematite) along the deformed unconformity, and marcasite (hematite, pyrite) in the conglomerates.

Rock mechanics involves characterizing the mechanical properties and behaviour of rock material and the natural discontinuities of the rock mass, while rock engineering is concerned with specific engineering circumstances, for example, how much load will the rock support and whether reinforcement is necessary. Rock engineering models developed depend considerably on the input data such as boundary conditions, the properties of rock material and rock mass. Correct evaluation of these properties frequently requires laboratory and in-situ tests, supplemented with a high degree of experience and judgment. Accordingly, since 1974, the ISRM Commission on Testing Methods has spent considerable effort in developing a succession of the ISRM Suggested Methods (SMs) for different aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering with the contribution of a number of working groups and cooperation of some other ISRM Commissions. This paper emphasizes the need and importance of standardization of rock testing methods within the context of the ISRM SMs, gives a guideline for developing ISRM SMs and finally discusses on some implementation and contractual issues associated with rock testing and experienced in practice, and briefly introduces main future trends in rock characterization, testing and monitoring. Shizuyuan deposit is a compound type of greisen and skarn associated' with W,mo,Sn,and BI mineralization. Tungsten-bearing skarns are located at the contacts between carbonate rocks and granitic stock. Ore-bearing greisens occur in the top of granite or superimpose on the skarn rocks. Although mineralization and alteration are heterogeneous,there are clear patterns in the preferred associations of minerals on all scales, and an orderly sequence can be distinguished. The sequence of mineralization Isom bhar. Gsesus-.contactròoctaard is characterized bòyVtia of L, a4[~!kient assemblages W(mo,~P),,,W,(,Mo,Sn,Bi),Sn (Bi), and Sn. Skarn formation is divided into an early sk.arnoid stage and a late metasomatic stage. The skarnoid stage formed grandite garnet and diopside pyroxene in the limestone. The iron content of garnets decreases significantly away from the granite, whereas pyroxenes maintain a relatively constant diopsitic composition. The metasomatic skarn stage is charac- terized by hydrous silicates. The mineral assemblages of. greisens are regularly distributed in space. The feldspar-quartz-fluoride was usually formed in-the deeper part, upwards giving way to muscovite-quartz, and topaz usually occurs in the uppermost part. The distribution, and miner- alogical relationships of alteration facies suggest that they formed as a result of the progressive reaction of an ascending hydrothermal solution with aluminum-nearing limestones an-d granitic rocks respectively. The ore elements were mobilized and deposited in association. with hydrosilicate alteration of skarns and greisens.

Sulfur isotope data are available for 18 low-sulfide orogenic gold systems hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales including those in the northern Hill End Trough (Hargraves, Hill End, Napoleon Reefs, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town, Windeyer) and adjacent areas (Bodangora, Lucknow, Springfield), the Gilmore Fault Zone (Adelong, Sebastopol) and those in the Parkes district (Calarie, London-Victoria, Wyoming One-Myall United). Other systems for which data are available include Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, McMahons Reef and Yalgogrin. The d34S data for many of the larger deposits including Adelong, Bodangora, Calarie, Hargraves, Hill End London-Victoria, Lucknow, Sebastopol, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town and Windeyer (Group 1) are all very similar and have average d34S values close to zero per mil. Near 0ë d34S signatures imply that sulfur was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. Furthermore, the large Wyoming One deposit has d34S values significantly below 0ë with the data implying that sulfur was sourced from a fractionated magmatic reservoir. Group 2 deposits include those at Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, Napoleon Reefs, McMahons Reef and Springfield . These deposits have average d34S values significantly above 0ë. With the exception of Springfield where sulfur was probably sourced from the Hill End Trough, Group 2 deposits are an order of magnitude smaller than Group 1 deposits. The results suggest that many of the larger orogenic-related gold deposits hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales derived sulfur and gold as a result of leaching and recycling from a magmatic reservoir. Alternatively, there may have been direct mantle-derived input; however, this is considered unlikely on geological grounds. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The first geological maps of parts of Australia were produced in the 1830s and 1840s, many being for purely practical purposes, such as indicating the occurrence of coal, iron and other essential materials. Mineral location maps were also first made about the same time.More systematic geological mapping commenced in the 1850s when large parts of New South Wales and Victoria were studied in government-sponsored surveys by geologists such as Samuel Stutchbury, Alfred Selwyn and Reverend William B. Clarke. Their work coincided with the opening up of most of the major goldfields of eastern Australia, which led to the establishment of Departments of Mines in the separate Colonies (later States within the Commonwealth of Australia).A few companies employed consultant geologists at this time, and the mapping by Frederick Odernheimer is particularly notable. Geological study of Australian ore-deposits and mineralisedareas was influenced by the continental European geological ideas of men such as Odernheimer as well as by those from England. Both geological and mineral maps were a feature of Colonialdisplays presented at major international exhibitions during the second half of the nineteenth century. The maps accompanied rock and mineral collections which showed the known and potential mineral wealth of the Colonies. Such displays raised interest in the potential for development amongst government officials, entrepreneurs and investors in Australia and abroad.By the 1880s most of the Colonies had produced basic geological maps, and several maps of the whole continent had been published. Although systematic mapping of the continent become a reality only in the 1950s, the nineteenth century geological and mineral mapping formed the basis for the development of the major coal, artesian water, and metalliferous mining regions of Australia.
