Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

Computers are playing an increasing role in the management of technical data in mines. Companies are re-assessing the role of their data processing departments as users demand computer resources in non-accounting areas. Data of all kinds is now being seen as a, company resource, and the role of computing professionals is to help to manage the data flow, not merely to manage computers. The concept of distributed data bases puts the responsibility for data entry, editing and updating with the user. This challenges conservative views of centralized control of computing, suggesting, instead, centralized co-ordination. A survey of the possible applications of computers in technical areas points up the special requirements of handling raw, processed and consolidated technical data. Technical data bases have become flexible as mini- computer hardware and software have rapidly developed. Management has the ultimate responsibility for efficiently administering corporate data bases, and it must ensure suitable policies are developed for this purpose, with enough flexibility to cope with the impact of fast changing technology.

The Golden Cross is the first large precious metals mine to be both commissioned and closed in the æmodernÆ era in New Zealand. This paper discusses the life cycle of the Golden Cross mine, with emphasis on the closure process and post closure management.   The closure process has generally been very well managed, and successful, but in spite of that some on-going issues remain unresolved. Nearly nine years after the end of mining the mine owners are still actively managing the site, with no immediate end to that in sight.   The site has been described as atypical, due to the identification of a deep seated landslide below the tailings and waste rock storage facilities. However that should not be given too much emphasis when addressing the overall closure and post-closure management issues, which could well apply to other existing and future mine sites in New Zealand.   The Golden Cross can provide valuable lessons for other miners, and the issues arising at this site should be watched closely by the industry as a whole.

Mining Lease 908, situated on Gorge Creek near its confluence with the present Cape River system, has been subjected to intensive recent exploration for alluvial gold.The gold is hosted by a buried palaeochannel, the Gorge Creek Lead and by an overlying remnant meander of the Cape River. The principal, if not sole, sources of gold within the Gorge Creek Lead are the northwest trending Great Australian Reef and Green's Specimen Reef systems which are situated on adjacent high ground. Lower grade gold bearing eluvial ground separates the reefs from the Gorge Creek Lead. The sources for gold within the old Cape River system channel (Canton Lead) are thought to be situated some distance upstream, one source perhaps being the Lolworth Diggings located 30 kilometres to the northwest.Exploration of previously "heavily dug" ground on both leads consisted of detailed geological mapping followed by the collection and treatment of bulk samples from eight costeans. The wash samples varied in size from 120 to 396 cubic metres. Treatment was undertaken through a commercial sized conventional wet screen and jig plant.

The Illawarra Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy over recent years has established an enviable reputation for organising and conducting conferences, colloquia and symposia. And this Symposium must surely enhance that reputation. The subject of the Symposium, Seam Gas Drainage has become a matter of great import- ance to the Australian Coal Industry in a comparatively short time. Our short experience being due to our operations, until recent times anyway, not being unduly affected by gas. The Australian Industry, by virtue of its mines getting deeper and higher rates of extraction being required is now encountering the difficulties with gas which have for so long been part of the coal mining scene in many other countries. Because these gas emissions affect our working conditions by way of creating hazards and affect our production by way of bringing about cessation of operations from time to time this Symposium must be regarded as being very timely out here. I must congratulate the Branch Committee on the general set,yp :o.f the programme of papers. The classification of papers into four groups and the sequence in which the papers were presented provided an excellent flow through from introduction to finality. A fundamental error of sampling occurs when a sample is extracted from a larger mass of ore or lot. The act of sampling requires that all particles belonging to the lot have an equal chance of being extracted. This type of sampling is called unbiased sampling. The sampling equipment (herein referred to as the sampler) should be constructed with some additional mechanical characteristics to guarantee that the samples will be unbiased. Samplers, extracting increments from a continuous flow, such as a conveyor belt, collect aliquots at regular time intervals. These time intervals relate to the number of aliquots extracted from a given mass of lot, whilst passing through the continuous flow. The frequency of extractions will influence the precision or the error of the sample (integration error). Further, the ore variability influences the amount collected from the continuous flow. Normally, the sampling protocol utilised is designed for the extractions obtained from the conveyor belt, omitting any error committed during this operation, ie the error of extracting from the continuous flow. This study aims to analyse the error of sampling a continuous flow by using a variogram with added on auxiliary functions. Each different piece of material passing through the flow will exhibit a distinct temporal variogram, which should influence the frequency of the samples being extracted for each chosen sampling error. The methodology used is presented in the form of a case study from a coal processing plant.

THIS instrument, depends on the principle that, over a short period, the surfaee of a porous substance from which a liquid is evaporating receives the same amount of heat by conduction, convection, and radiation as it loses in the latent heat of the evaporating liquid. If, then, the amount of heat being received by a surface can be measured, the rate of evaporation can also be obtained. The Kata thermometer is also based on this principle differently applied.The instrument, as shown in Fig. 1, consists essentially of a thermometer with a sliding which is divided by three pointers into two equal parts which may be spaced so as to cover a distance of, for example, 5° of the thermometer scale. The instrument is calibrated so that the amount of heat required per unit area of the bulb to raise the menissus is known. The method of using the instrument is as follows:The slide is first set so that thc central pointer is at the temperature of the evaporating surface.The thermometer is cooled by any convenient means so that the meniscus is several below the lowest pointer. The thermometer is then placed near the evaporating surface, when the Ineniscus begins to rise and the time taken for it to rise from the lowest to the top pointer is measured. From this and the calibration results the amount of heat retained per unit area of the bulb at the mean temperature...

Today tunnel segment liners are sealed with corner-vulcanised gaskets made of extruded elastomeric compression profiles. The profile geometries and the elastomeric materials have been further developed in course of time to meet the steadily increasing water-proofing requirements. After 40 years of using such compression gaskets, a wide range of proven standard profile geometries and well-known brands can be found on the market. Even so, there is still potential for further developments and improvement, not only with regard to the water-proofing performance. Permanently increasing cost pressure in the segment production plants demands further developments and new solutions with regard to application techniques. Following a period or small-scale activity a joint venture was formed between Ceramco Limited of New Zealand and Georgia Kaolin Company of USA. The initial concept was to process clays for the paper industry but it soon, became apparent that insufficient markets were attainable for the grades of china clay that could be produced for an economic unit. Ceramco Limited acquired the Georgia Kaolin interest in 1975 and proceeded to search for a market, of markets, that would: 1. utilise the unique properties of the product, and 2. enable a viable operation to be created. This paper describes the mineral deposits, the process, the properties of the product, and the marketing methods of New Zealand China Clays.

The Adavale Basin and Warrabin Trough are remnants of a much more extensive Devonian to Carboniferous depression which evolved through four tectonic stages; an initial period of rifting and three periods of foreland thrusting, which cannibalized much of the earlier depression. The Basin has subsequently been buried by sediments of the Galilee and Eromanga Basins.The Basin was initiated during the Early Devonian when the earlier cratonized Thompson Foldbelt rifted away to form a marginal sea comparable to the South China sea. This crustal extension was probably in a Northeast-Southwest direction. These initial rifts were the site of acid volcanism (Gumbarbo Formation) and later, deltaic and shallow marine facies (Eastwood Beds).

The Mineral Science Laboratory of the Government Chemical Laboratories has recently investigated various procedures for the analysis of the platinum group metals (PGMs). This investigation covered a number of methods for the extraction and preconcentration'of the PGMs from a wide range of geological materials. The nickel sulphide extraction technique proved to be overall the most applicable procedure. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETA-AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were examined for their suitability in analysing platinum group metals in solution. ETA-AAS and ICP-MS proved to be the instruments of choice due to their low detection limits.

The annual growth in lead consumption in the Western world has declined sharply in the past ten years, as lead has suffered a wave of substitution by other materials, and has also been the object of concern about its toxicity in daily applications. Like most metal industries, the lead industry has tended to be more production-oriented than market-oriented than is the case with some of its competitors. However, in recent times this pessimism and preoccupation with weathering the threats from environmental legislation, substitution and low prices appears to have been replaced with a new optimism in some sectors of the industry. This is indicated by renewed promotional activities and efforts to find more applications and market opportunities.

Expert systems have been employed in a number of areas for a considerable number of years. However, the traditional long development times associated with these systems have restricted their application. With the advent of powerful Expert System Development Tools such as COMDALE/X and the use of efficient development techniques, the time required can be drastically reduced. This results in the availability and applicability of this technology to a wide range of applications. This paper discusses some of the 'rules' which indicate amenability (or otherwise) of a particular problem to an expert system solution. Various problem types are examined and these are illustrated with reference to examples of their use at various operating sites.

An innovative process for the separation of carbonaceous minerals from bulk ores is presented. In this process, the surface of carbonate minerals is reacted with acid used to nucleate CO2 bubbles at the particle solution interface. Entraining the liberated CO2 gas at the surface via coating agent renders the particle more buoyant providing for a selective separation from non-carbonate containing masses. Different surfactants were tested to stabilise the bubbles and float the particles. In this paper, separation of dolomite from apatite using PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) as a coating agent, is discussed. Commercial pelletizing commenced in 1955 to agglomerate very fine concen- trates which could not be fed directly to the blast furnace. Extensive develop- ment has taken place and is continuing. There are now three main heat hardening processes in use. Plants are operating, or under construction, throughout the world capable of producing in excess of 125 million tons per year of pellets from concentrates or direct mined orefines. The Whyalla Pellet Plant, which commenced production in May 1968, is examined in detail to illustrate the general principles of pelletizing. This plant converts high grade iron ore fines into high quality pellets at a rate in excess of 2 million tons per year.

Erosion of unprotected batters, spoil banks, slopes, and stockpiled material creates a multitude of environmental problems. Winds blowing across these denuded surfaces can generate dust clouds capable of depositing un- desirable particulate material a considerable distance from the source. Water eroding these areas continually exposes new surfaces which may be oxidized. Iron pyrites can be dissolved in the flowing water, resulting in the addition of pollutants to streams and water sources. Silting of water sources can also occur as a result of this erosion. Valuable topsoil can be blown or washed away. In addition, the after-effects of erosion leave a visual pollution which is more difficult and expensive to correct than to prevent.

Hilton Mine is located 20 km north of the city of Mount Isa and Isa Mine in far north west Queensland. The sealed road used by the 500 employees to commute from the city is part of the Barkly Highway linking Mt Isa to the Northern Territory.Although discovered in 1947, major underground development did not start until late-1982 and first cut-and-fill production in mid-1987. The J53 exploration shaft was sunk in 1970-73 and the main P49 shaft in 1973-75. Since January 1990, most of Hilton ore production has been treated in the Hilton Concentrator, and concentrates trucked in slurry tankers to Isa for smelting or shipping.
