We often read and hear, especially in the United States, that we are running out of critical metals. These are vague forebodings of stagna- tion or winding down of our civilization. Our technological progress has been rapid in the last 50 years and is still advancing at an accelerated rate, and predictions of its long-term impact on consumption and production of metals are more hazardous than ever in the light of the great economic and political shifts that are bound to continue. There are many factors that will have a hardly predictable but profound effect on pro- duction and consumption of metals over a time span of, say, 25 years. Among such factors are recycling, substitution, availability of capital, direct involvement of governments in financing and production, and the capability of producing much lower grade ores at possibly much higher prices relative to costs in the event of scarcity. I must state at the outset that my discussion of this topic does not take into account the role that deep-sea nodules containing copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese may play, because I don't believe production from these deposits will be of much significance within the 25 year span I will be discussing.

During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). It was once considered sufficient to revegetate old mine sites using grass or trees. At the commencement of the Stawell JV (SJV) operation in 1981, management determined that pre-existing vegetation would be replaced. This policy was somewhat 'ahead of its time'. The cost of rehabilitation at SJV averages $8000 per hectare. Rehabilitation of this calibre requires a practical understanding of local ecosystems.

THE auriferous sulphide ores of the eastern end of Gippsland, and notably of the Cassilis and lVIitta districts, are amongst the most complex and refractory in Victoria-perhaps in Australia. The minerals occurring in these ores are pyrite, arseno-pyrite, zincblende, galena, and (in smaller amounts) some of the copper, sulphides, as chalcopyrite and covellite; and some of the antimonial minerals, notably stibnite and jamiesonite. In the oxidized portions of the lodes, the oxidized lead and iron minerals, and small amounts of the hydrated arseriiate of iron, are found.In the Cassilis mine, near Omeo, copper is present usually in quantities of under 1 %. The magnetic sulphide of iron is of fairly common occurrence. In, the upper levels of the Cassilis mine tin was usually present, the amount going up to 3% in some samples of concentrates. These minerals occur sometimes banded, but usually as an intimate mixture-pyrite and arseno-pyrite predominating. The gangue is usually quartz (blackened by enclosed particles of sulphides). Calcite, magnesium silicate and felspar are also present in varying amounts.

The Fitzpatrick area is the deepest section of the North Mine, with the orebody located between 1450 and 1800 m below the surface and some 600 m NE of the main No. 3 Shaft orebody and separated from it by the intensely sheared Globe Vauxhall Shear Zone. Development towards the Fitzpatrick area commenced in 1977 after earlier initial exploration drive development. However, it was not until 1982 that mining in the Fitzpatrick area actually began with the silling out of No. 36 level at a depth of some 1600 in. Since that time mechanised cut and fill mining from an incline ramp system with connecting stope accesses has progressed some 25 m above No. 36 level. Initial sill development on No. 37 level at 1660 m depth also commenced in July 1987 to further develop the Fitzpatrick area.

Dilution and ore loss have an important bearing on the success of open pit mining projects. Their impacts on production costs, revenues and production rate require that they are correctly modelled in the long-term mine plan. The estimation of dilution and ore loss is therefore an essential part of any Ore Reserve estimate or mine schedule. Large open pit mines are driven by the economies of scale that are achieved at the cost of less selectivity in the discrimination of ore and waste. Planning for these mines is facilitated by the use of block models for mine design, scheduling and the conversion of Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves. This paper reviews various approaches to the estimation of dilution and ore loss, as implemented in computer block models. In the case of orebodies with well-defined sharp boundaries, rather than irregular stockwork mineralisation, the geological interpretation is a critical factor. Variability in the geometry of orebodies is common within large open pits and must be taken into account when estimating dilution and ore loss. A method of regularisation, controlled by the wireframed geological model, is demonstrated, using examples from large open pit stratiform copper and magnetite deposits. This can be carried out without special computer software modules.

Roller seed screens were installed at The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (B.H.P.) Whyalla pellet plant to replace vibrating screens on the green ball circuits. The installation of roller screens was justified by improving the sizing of the green balls. This improved sizing increased the yield of fired pellets produced from green balls thus decreasing the fuel consumption. The fired pellet sizing was improved also. This paper discusses the configuration of the roller screens installed at Whyalla, quality of green balls produced, advantages of roller screens compared with vibrating screens and future development of roller Screens.

Production scale experiment study was carried out in a limestone open-pit for testing the theory and method proposed by the author(Zou, 1987). The results of experiments indicate that the mathematical model and computer programs, which include the consideration of both the three dimentional distributions of the weak planes and the energy densities of explosion stress waves, reflect the physical process of rock bench blasting quite well. The predicted fragment distributions coincide well with the practical fragment distributions measured with the photo-image analysis method proposed by the author(Zou,1989). The paper "A Three Dimensional Mathematical Model for Calculating the Rock Fragmentation by Bench Blasting in the Open-pit"(Zou,1987), which was published in some conferences and journals, has interested some scholors and researchers. In order to test and improve the model, a group of production scale experiments were carried out in a limestone open-pit during 1986-1987. The procedure and results of the experiments are illustrated in this paper.

The 1986 PACLARK Expedition established that propagation of a seafloor spreading zone into continental crust has created a complex series of volcanic basins on the floor of the Western Woodlark Basin. In addition to abyssal basalts, felsic volcanic rocks were recovered - especially at the leading edge in the extreme west. A recent deposit of hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxides was discovered on an axial seamount of basaltic andesite, and seawater plume anomalies suggest current hydrothermal venting elsewhere. As a modern analogue for the settings in which ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide orebodies probably formed, the Western Woodlark Basin warrants further investigation.

Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. Mining professionals recognise the need and application for reconciliation and value tracking. It is necessary however to examine our current reality, and evaluate the following. Do our reconciliations really balance correctly, and are we able to track value effectively throughout processes? If we are honest, in most operations the answer is a resounding no. This means that we are surrounded by fluctuation and deviations that we do not account for and do not understand. This is astounding, because given our level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should have a good understanding of our environments and be able to manage them effectively. How do we manage effectively if we are surrounded by so much uncertainty? The purpose of this paper is to describe, at high level, the principles of reconciliation and value tracking, to highlight some areas where deviations are introduced into the mining process, and to propose a different approach to the apparent reconciliation and value tracking conundrum. The paper also poses several questions that need to be critically addressed at most operations. Instead of making the same mistakes each month in reconciliations, mining professionals need to acknowledge two facts. Firstly there will be uncertainty that we need to accept, since all our estimates are based on sampling, an orebody is not homogeneous and peopleÆs behaviour will influence the process, etc. Variability will always exist and lead to uncertainty. What is the current approach in the reconciliation process when a deviation occurs and how do we use reconciliation and value tracking to manage and improve our business? The second fact is that we need to stop using reconciliation and value tracking to only measure and report. We need to adopt a new approach to manage mining throughput, where reconciliation and value tracking are enablers to the success of the business. In most mining operations, significant effort goes into planning and measurement for the purposes of reconciliation and value tracking. The importance of accurate and effective reconciliation and value tracking should be to ensure the maximum utilisation of the resource, maximising throughput and enabling the business to deliver a product to its client, of the correct quality and in a timely manner.

Blasting is at first sight a simple operation. Blastholes are drilled in a suitable pattern, primed, charged with explosives, stemmed and finally the blastholes are connected together to give the appro- priate initiation sequence. In practice the action of the explosive takes place in the interior of an opaque rock mass and only the external faces of the rock mass to be blasted can be easily observed. The mechanisms of blasting cannot be observed directly and must be inferred from observations of the free face and meas- urements of particle movement made by sensors grouted into holes in the rock. Explosives react very rapidly, in some microse- conds and any instrumentation of a blast must have an appro- priate response time. In many mines several rock types can be encountered during production. Several different methods of blasting may be necessary to cope with changes in rock types espe- cially if weak rocks are found in the final limits. This also makes it difficult to be sure of getting a large enough volume of rock to perform a series of reproducible experiments. While there appears to be agreement on the mechanism of blasting it is unlikely that a detailed understanding of how all the variables that can be encountered in practice affect blasting. The ease of assessment of the results of blasting depends on the criteria used. It is easy to isolate, measure and count over- size boulders. It is however difficult and costly to get a complete fragment size distribution. Methods used to assess blasting can vary significantly from site to site and the ways in which data are collected, presented and analysed will vary making compari- son of blasts at several locations very difficult. The definition of an optimum blast can also vary with the type of blasting. The muck-pile profile and fragmentation will be different for a dragline to that for a truck and shovel operation. In order to be able to assess blasting the mechanism has to be understood. Th rock and explosive properties considered rele- vant to blasting can then be determined. The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.
