Gallium occurs at above background levels in most samples collected from 11 of the major geothermal areas in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Concentrations of Ga in the 48 samples ranged from 8 to 144 mg kg-1 and varies widely from place to place within each geothermal area. Gallium is contained within the alumino-silicate structure of clay in the mud, having substituted mainly for Al. Suggested deposition mechanisms for Ga also involve co-precipitation with Sb, As, and SiO2 colloids. Digestion trials, carried out to determine extraction conditions for possible commercial exploitation, showed that heating the mud to 500 - 600¦C for 1 hour followed by acid/alkali treatment gave complete recoveries.

The major strata control considerations which affect the optimisation of roadway driveage in highly stressed strata is the performance of reinforcement placed and the extent of stress induced rock deformation. High development rates and opening stability requires efficient rock reinforcement and stress relief strategies which maximise the integrity of the rock about roadways created. Current studies demonstrate the capability to reduce lateral stress distributions across panels and research is aimed toward a higher capacity bolting system. It is the intention to provide industry with more efficient reinforcement and stress control alternatives which will allow high production development equipment to operate without the restriction of delays caused by poor ground Conditions.

The Bowen Basin of Central Queensland covers a total area of 3 200 000 ha. The Basin has proven reserves of about 24 000 000 tonnes of coking coal and steaming coal which constitutes about 70 percent of the known coal reserves in Queensland. Large scale open cut coal mining in the Bowen Basin commenced at Moura in 1959. There are now 16 open cut mines operating in the Basin and they collectively mine through about 3000 ha of land each year. Most of the land which has been mined has previously been used for extensive grazing. No mining has yet taken place on cropping land although coal reserves underlie land which has been cropped or has potential for cropping. The primary objectives of almost all of the mining companies operating in the Bowen Basin are to rehabilitate mined land to a stable and productive form which is compatible with surrounding land use which is dominantly grazing. The acceptability of these objectives is considered against the prospect of mining of cropping land and the qualified success of the return of rehabilitated land to grazing uses.

Most developing projects face a range of technical and non-technical challenges, and examination of development histories can potentially provide insights into improved approaches to project development. The Kestanelik project in the Canakkale region of Western Turkey was acquired by Chesser Resources Ltd in 2008. Turkey is a significant and growing source of gold production, with sector participation by both domestic and international companies. While the broad ranges of challenges faced by developing projects is well known, there are relatively few case studies in which the range of technical, environmental, social and governance challenges are presented in a single contribution. Recent studies of undeveloped complex orebodies have particularly shown the extent to which environment, social and governance (ESG) complexities contribute to project delays and failures. The Kestanelik project faced a full range of technical and ESG complexities, and provides an illustrative example of the associated challenges. CITATION: Valenta, R, 2018. Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

GHD-Black & Veatch (GHD-BV) have completed design and specification of the ash thickening plant at Tarong Power Station, including operation of a pilot plant. Construction of the plant is in progress and commissioning is planned for early-2004. The objective of the new plant is to convert the low concentration (lean phase) ash slurry currently generated by the power station into concentrated slurry which will then be pumped to the existing ash dam. Water recovered from the lean slurry will be returned to the power station for reuse. The drivers behind this project are to extend the life of the ash dam and to reduce water pumping costs. A maximum flow of 1000 litres per second is expected in the thickening plant. The process involves a screening phase, which removes large material that could cause blockages or equipment damage. A 50 metre diameter thickener then concentrates the screened lean ash slurry to 55 - 60 per cent w/w solids. In addition, the thickener plant will allow the harvesting of floating cenospheres (hollow, spherical ash particles) from the lean slurry. Cenospheres are currently collected from the surface of the ash dam and drained on a pad adjacent to the dam. The new system will use a surface skimmer to remove the cenospheres from the thickener and transfer them to settling ponds for further classification. The settling ponds simulate the detention on the existing ash dam, and allow entrained fine ash and slow settling cenospheres time to settle. As settling occurs in ponds, the slow settling cenospheres can be completely recovered whereas when they settle in the dam, the opportunity for recovery is lost. Cenospheres are a valuable by-product produced during the combustion process, and recycling of this material reduces the waste generated by the power station. Water recovered from the thickener drains to a three megalitre reservoir. Water is drawn from the reservoir for thickener plant service water and various other uses in the power station. The bulk of the water is used to sluice ash from the power station to the thickening plant. In the current configuration, surface water from the ash dam is reused but must be pumped several kilometres back up to the power station. The dam also holds an inventory of several thousand megalitres of water and has significant evaporative losses. Therefore the current raw water make up demand is substantial. In addition, some areas of the power station traditionally using raw water will be modified as part of this project to allow the use of recovered water, further reducing the raw water demand. The design incorporates many features of sustainable water management. By more effectively recovering water from the lean ash slurry, the amount of raw water make up required by the system will be significantly reduced. This method of water recovery provides a more sustainable and energy efficient ash-transport mechanism.

In the above mechanism; the surface re- actions appear to be fast and not rate controll- ing. In a carbon surface deficient bed the diff- usion of oxychloride intermediate through the boundary layer to the carbon surface becomes the rate controlling step. In a zircon surface deficient bed the diffusion of oxychloride away from the zircon surface controls the reaction. This postulated mechanism can be used to ex-, plain the observed experimental effects.

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The gas dispersion properties that are the subjects of this communication include three measured parameters, gas superficial velocity (gas rate), gas holdup and bubble size, plus derived parameter, bubble surface area flux. Over the past ten years sensors to measure these parameters have been introduced and those originating from McGill University are briefly described. The sensors have seen extensive use in plant campaigns and experiences on four cell types at three sites are discussed. The impact of frother in controlling bubble size by retarding coalescence is illustrated, introducing the need to understand chemistry/machine interactions in interpreting gas dispersion results. An increase in Sauter mean bubble size (D32) with superficial gas velocity (gas rate, Jg) was found, which followed the empirical relationship where Do ~ 0.5 - 0.6 mm and C and n are fitted parameters dependent on the system (machine and chemistry). Following this trend in Db - Jg, consistent bubble surface area flux (Sb) - Jg trends are also observed. The trend in Sauter mean versus number mean (D10) is used to help interpret the nature of the distribution; as the means approach numerically, the distribution is narrowing. Analysing gas holdup versus gas rate shows both a dependence on location in the cell as well as cell position in a bank, factors which must be accounted for when comparing data from different plants and circuits. The instrumentation and methodologies being developed are presenting new opportunities for incorporating cell hydrodynamics into metallurgical diagnostics. A case study at one plant serves as illustration.

The ERA - Ranger Mine ore processing operation consists of a sulphuric acid leach followed by counter current decantation and solvent extraction circuits. The most expensive unit processing operation at Ranger is the sulphuric acid leach. In 1992 and 1993 changes were made to the operation of the leach circuit. These changes have reduced power and reagent consumption in leach by 30 per cent and 20 per cent respectively with minimal effect on extraction efficiency. The first change was to operate the leach circuits at higher pHs than previously attempted. In addition a cap was placed on the amount of acid added to the leach circuit. Secondly, an on-line pH measurement system was installed and has reduced the variation with time of the leach circuit pHs. Finally, the number of leach vessels used was reduced from ten to seven. This action was undertaken after an examination of the uranium profile and the residence time in the leach circuit from previous years. This paper examines the above changes and assesses their effectiveness on plant performance and costs.

The exploration industry generally has a low opinion of the quality of the service supplied to it by government departments. In particular, the academic research-related emphasis of the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the relatively low level of explora- tion assistance offered by several Mines Departments are of concern. In a number of areas of geoscience research, the industry perceives a mixup of priorities and a lack of understanding on the part of governments as to its needs. While government's sights are, and should be, set on the future needs of the community at large, the industry doubts that government budget allocations to the BMR and Mines Departments are either large enough or being cost-effectively spent. This is certainly the case for such areas as exploration assist- ance, provision of basic exploration data, and applied geoscientific research. On balance, the exploration industry's perceptions are misguided in a number of respects because of a lack of communication with government. However, this reinforces the need for changes in the manner in which govern- ment departments communicate with industry and, in particular, the criteria upon which research priorities are based. At a time of contracting oil and mineral exploration expenditure, and near-record levels of geoscientist unemployment, the government's role is critical and should be open to question.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan includes mining of the:unmineralised banded iron formation (BIF), Mt Whaleback Shale, Mt McRae Shale, Mt Sylvia Formation, and parts of the Wittenoom and Jeerinah Formation. With the exception of BIFs, all other units contain zones with varying amounts of sulphides and carbon û æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has a propensity to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulphide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Mining reactive shale at the Mt Whaleback mine must be undertaken in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Key tasks in the mining process include:100 per cent identification of blastholes that may contain reactive shale; 100 per cent correct loading of blastholes with specified blasting products; 100 per cent of reactive shale mined, hauled and dumped in designated overburden storage areas; 100 per cent containment and treatment of ARD water onsite; and ongoing research into ARD, self-heating and spontaneous combustion. Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments.

The analysis of rock fragment sizes plays a pivotal role in various stages of geotechnical and mining engineering. Traditional case-based methods often falter in addressing the variability in rock fragment images due to fluctuating geological conditions and imaging environments. To counter this challenge, AI-based models necessitate training on expansive and diverse data sets, encompassing a wide range of conditions and fragment types. However, the creation of such data sets is often hampered by financial and environmental constraints. This paper introduces a novel approach for rock fragment recognition, which leverages the power of AI for data augmentation, automated annotation and prediction. The methodology integrates three key components: Style-Based Generator Architecture for Generative Adversarial Networks (StyleGAN) for data augmentation, the Segment Anything Model (SAM) for automated annotation, and the multiscale version of you only look once (YOLO-MS) real-time instance segmentation model. The proposed method begins by training a new StyleGAN model using the original data set. It then delves into exploring the latent vectors of different rock fragment images to generate specific ‘style representations’. These latent vectors form the foundational elements of each image in a high-dimensional space, encapsulating critical features such as size, shape, texture, and colour variations. The next step involves conducting quality checks on the generated images to ensure their realism and suitability as training data. Subsequently, the augmented image set is annotated using modified SAM module, followed by training the YOLO-MS real-time instance segmentation model. The performance of this model, trained on the augmented data set, is compared with a model trained on the original data set, particularly in terms of generalisation abilities in new scenarios. The results exhibit a significant enhancement in accuracy, robustness, and generalisability of the model trained on the augmented data set, underscoring the potential of StyleGAN as a powerful tool for data augmentation in geotechnical engineering image analysis.

In this climate of increasing demand for commodities, it is becoming necessary to expand and optimise existing bulk material handling facilities in order to increase capacity to satisfy demand. Production capacity in these facilities is often adversely impacted during the expansion process. A successful and proven strategy to reduce this impact is to bring the additional capacity online in stages coinciding with routine maintenance or other short shutdowns. Compatibility of the automation systems with staged upgrades in capacity is the key to achieving a successful outcome. Since 1994, Hatch has been researching a generic, highly configurable product transport control system that can be reconfigured to cater for plant expansions or modifications without incurring significant risk to production capacity. In 2002, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPB IO) recognised the need for such a generic Route Selection and Sequencing (RSS) system and engaged Hatch to build a generic RSS system as part of the $US351 million BHPB IO Products and Capacity Expansion (PACE) project. In 2004, Hatch successfully deployed such a generic configurable control system at BHPB IO Port Hedland Ore Handling Facility. This generic system is known as the Hatch Product Transport (HPT) System.

Supergene lateritic iron ores are uncommon when compared with the vast tonnages of BIF-hosted microplaty haematite ores of the world or with the dominant supergene mimetic martite-goethite ores of the Hamersleys. In Australia and to a lesser extent in India and South America, mimetic replacement of gangue minerals by iron hydroxyoxides is a major factor in forming supergene iron ore from banded iron-formation (BIF) and results in the superb preservation of all of the original BIF features. This includes primary banding down to the finest inclusions, as a result of pseudomorphing of the BIF gangue at depth by goethite. The enrichment as a whole is an absolute accumulation of Fe at depth, dissolved from the surface BIF, and a removal of the gangue elements without loss of the original BIF mineral textures. Thus the ores grow upward to meet the downward destruction of the surface BIF by erosion. By contrast the supergene lateritic ores including the 'blue dust ores' are residual ores resulting from the relative accumulation of Fe. In the supergene lateritic ores derived from BIF, removal of the gangue is accompanied by repetitive solution and reprecipitation by secondary haematite and goethite. The final product of lateritisation of BIF and BIF-derived ores is typically complex, due to successive overprinting of earlier stages of alteration during the process, and because of the different precursors. This progressive lateritic modification tends to produce a varied surface complex including massive, vermiform, and botryoidal, or nodular aluminous/siliceous goethite and haematite, variously known as ferricrete, duricrust, canga, or 'hydrated zone hardcap'. The significant difference in these ores to the supergene mimetic martite-goethite ores is that they grow downward, with the total destruction of any of the parent BIF or BIF-ore textures.

A numerical groundwater model was used to predict the nature of interactions between heavy mineral sands mining operations and the groundwater regime at North Stradbroke Island, Southeast Queensland. North Stradbroke Island is formed mainly of massive vegetated Cainozoic aged dune sands. Since the 1950s, a number of operations have mined rutile, zircon and ilmenite on North Stradbroke Island. In such mining operations, a dredge and an associated processing plant are floated in a pond either above or below the prime groundwater table The numerical model was based on the North Stradbroke Island Groundwater Management Model, developed in 2001 by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M). This model was constructed using the modular, cell-centred, finite-difference groundwater flow model, MODFLOW, developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The NR&M model was refined to improve model resolution and detail for simulating dredge mine paths. Of particular interest were: water table fluctuations induced by mining for the identification of slope stability risk; the optimisation of sand spear arrays supplying mine make-up water requirements; inflow and outflow rates to the dredge pond for overall mine water balance; and interactions with Eighteen Mile Swamp and water supply bores controlled by the Redland Shire Council (RSC). Depending on the water level in the dredge pond compared with the surrounding groundwater table, water either flows out of the dredge pond into the groundwater regime or from the groundwater system into the dredge pond. The MODFLOW river package (RIV) was utilised for the modelling study. Dredge pond movement was simulated using specialised software developed by Watermark Numerical Computing (WNC) to interpolate pond positions and map the dredge path to the model grid both spatially and temporally. As tailings placement affects the groundwater system through increased recharge, the MODFLOW recharge package (RCH) was utilised to simulate different recharge efficiencies. Long-term model predictions were made for the period from July 2002 to May 2021. Results of the modelling showed that exchanges of flow between mining operations and the groundwater regime could be effectively managed. The study provided valuable information which was used to develop an appropriate mine water management plan.

Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

The properties of bearing metals are of considerable interest to mine engineers, since continuous running of mine and mill machinery is of vital importance. Of the several available types of bearing metal, the low melting point lead or tin base alloys are most generally used in mining plant because of the ease of replacement and the possibility of remelting scrap metal from old bearings. The most valuable property of these "white metals," however, is the plasticity which gives a self-aligning character to the bearings, enablingthem to adjust themselves to inequalities which may exist at the time of fitting, or which may develop during running. The object of the present paper is to explain in general terms the physical structures of white bearing metals, and to point out that constitution rather than composition determines the physical properties of these alloys. The same, indeed, is true of most engineering alloys. In steels, for example, a change in the structure may affect the properties to a far greater extent than a change of chemical composition.Structural changes in steels are produced chiefly by heat treatment. In the technical sense, as well as in the professional sense, the word 'model' can have many meanings. More than 23 000 references were uncovered by a simple literature search on keywords ' MO D EL#. and. (META LLURG#. or. M I NERAL#)' . For the purpose of this paper, 'models' will be considered to be mathematical formulations which attempt to represent or approximate a process. The model may be purely, or a combination of: ò fundamental models, based on the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics; ò semi-empirical or phenomenological models, where an intuitive concept of the process is formulated and found by testwork to fit observed behaviour; and ò empirical or 'black-box' models (including neural networks), where a mathematically convenient form is proposed and fitted. Even under this more restricted definition, which eliminates heuristic and statistical 'models', it is clear that the efforts expended in devising and using models have exploded during the years since the first APCOM Conference in 1961, benefiting from the dramatic decrease in the cost of computer power. This paper reviews the areas of usage of computer modelling in the metallurgical and mineral processing industries, from plant design, through off-line support, to on-line modelling and automatic control. In each area, frontiers of new development of the technology are mentioned. It is noted that, while modelling is now standard practice in design, it is not yet the norm in operating and controlling plants. The reasons for this partial acceptance are, it is argued, less related to the limitations of the technology than to the human and organisational factors involved in transferring technology to implementation.

In a stipulated hard rock situation, drilling and blasting costs per tonne in open cutting or underground operations are comparable. In open cuts the drilling and blasting costs per tonne of ore are multiplied by the waste ratio.Conventional underground loading and haulage practices are so batch-oriented that the cost per tonne of ore handled is a large integral multiplier of open out costs per tonne loaded and hauled.If underground costs are to be reduced to compare favourably with open out costs then loading and hauling practices underground must be converted to a non-batch continuous system. This can be achieved by utilising gravity to control ore to mobile crushers feeding conveyors running direct to surface.
