Structural fatigue damage of haul truck frames is a costly problem associated with the operation of large mine haul trucks. A monitoring programme is described which has been instigated to measure stresses in the frames of haul trucks under actual mine operating conditions. The instrumentation used and methodology employed in the computer analysis of the results is briefly described. The results of the monitoring programmes are reviewed, and the effects of various factors affecting structural fatigue damage of three common types of rear dump truck are considered. Factors discussed include the effects of haul route features (for example shovel, dump and crusher areas); the effect of operations such as turning, braking, loading and dumping; the influence of payload; the effects of malfunctions in suspensions; and the influence of haul route surface quality. It is shown that with respect to payload, while structural fatigue damage is increased with payload, the structural damage per unit of payload does not change significantly for moderate increases in payload above the nominal value. Finally, on the basis of these results, recommendations are made for haul route design and operational practices which will increase the structural fatigue life of haul truck frames.

The nickel exploration boom of the late-1960s and early-1970s led to the discovery of numerous komatiite-hosted nickel sulphide deposits, associated with variably serpentinised bodies of olivine-rich cumulates. Subsequent research has shown the importance of volcanological processes to understanding the genesis of these deposits. Crucial developments have come through consideration of the fluid dynamics of magmas and magma-crystal mixtures, through observation of the dynamics and geometry of modern day basaltic lava flows, through application of theory and experimentation on the kinetics of crystal growth from magmas, and most importantly from extensive detailed field mapping of komatiitic sequences in the Yilgarn Block and elsewhere. From these studies has emerged a new integrated view of the volcanological setting of komatiite-hosted deposits, and a recognition that a complete continuum of deposit types exists. Nevertheless, komatiite associated magmatic nickel deposits generally fall into two overall types based on the nature of the sulphide ore. In the first type the bulk of the ore is either massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide or a variable mixture of massive sulphide and an ore characterised by olivine crystals in a continuous matrix of sulphide occupying between 30 and 75 per cent by volume of the rock (called Matrix Ore). Nickel grades of massive sulphide ore range from 2 - 20 wt% and those of the matrix ore generally fall in the range 1 - 5 wt% (average 2.5 wt%) Ni/Cu ratios of the sulphide fraction are generally >10.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) developed a new construction method (the M-2 method) that could drive a long, curved small-diameter tunnel (4>1.2 m) without human labor. This method employs the cast-in-place lining system, using quick-hardening resin mortar, so that it can greatly increase the driving distance and execute both long distance driving (longer than 500 m) and curved driving with a radius of curvature of 200 m. Furthermore, the central control system with a mini-computer in a vertical shaft enables all work in a small-diameter tunnel, i.e., excavation, lining, and transportation of excavated soil and materials, without human labor. NTT conducted several field tests and a Practical Application Test (P.A.T.) under a public road bearing great traffic. Good results were obtained and the practicability of this method was demonstrated. Therefore, from now on, NTT will apply this ii-2 method to drive telecommunication cable tunnels in urban areas. This method will also be applicable to constructing public tunnel facilities, such as for water, sewage, electricity and gas.

the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace at Cockle Creek, NSW, was constructed in 1961 and is the oldest facility using the Imperial Smelting process in operation. In recent years there have been significant improvements in many areas of the operation, including production, safety, hygiene and environmental performance. Steps taken to achieve these improvements are described. Plans to secure a profitable future while meeting environmental requirements are outlined.

The integration of digital twins in mining represents a significant advancement towards enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making. Central to this development is the role of visualisation, a crucial element in mining digitalisation. This paper aims to develop a data-driven visualisation solution for the construction of mining digital twins, highlighting how this innovation revolutionises the representation of physical mining environments. It spotlights the shortcomings of conventional visualisation methods, particularly their inability to accurately depict complex underground environments and their predominantly historical orientation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel, data-driven approach. This approach extensively utilises CAD files, encompassing data from geological surveys to intricate mine plans, thereby significantly elevating the precision of digital twins. It supports real-time updates and enables flexible interaction with a variety of data types. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive data diagram alongside the adaptation of a 3D tile index. This strategy ensures the efficient rendering of extensive mining environments, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive digital twin model. In conclusion, the implementation of data-driven visualisation in the construction of mining digital twins marks a pivotal advancement in the industry’s digital transformation. It promises a more detailed, accurate, and dynamic depiction of mining operations.

By explosion rock mass behaviour is conditioned by preset complex of rocks natural characteristics. Very important role of blockness, which is percent (share) content at examining massif of natural separatenesses of different dimensions and configurations, separated each from other by the cracks of geological and technogene origin. Besides natural properties of massif the power, detonational characteristics of applied explosives, parameters of explosives charges disposition at massif and technology of explosion influence vastly at lumpiness (granulometric structure) of exploded rocks. The mathematical model of rock mass destruction by explosion had been elaborated and substantiated. It ties mutually the initial data (rocks properties, parameters of the charges disposition) and final results of explosion (granulometric structure of exploded rocks). The program of this complicated problem solving had been compiled. Analysing the received results of the problem solving, one can reveal contribution of each group of influence factors for lumpiness of exploded rocks. This fact creates preconditions for elimination or diminution of negative role of some controlled initial data.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite, and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferrosilicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

An industry initiated project, sponsored by the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Council, has worked for two years in developing design guidelines for underground coal mining machinery.Continuous miners and shuttle cars were selected for the initial development of design guidelines as these machines were linked with 7500 lost workdays and 490 reported injuries during the preceding two years.

Performance trials followed the commissioning of three large mine fans at Mount Isa in 1965. Actual performance characteristics were determined. These were in good agreement with predicted performance. Piezometer rings for volume flow and pressure measurement were calibrated, and the performance of some aerodynamic components of the installation was studied.Test equipment, preparation, and conditions are described.

The areas of impact when employing high productivity long wall systems are reviewed and the financial implications of the most significant areas highlighted. This paper reviews the role of fill in mining including consolidated fill both histor- ically and currently as determined by a recent survey of the Fill Subcommittee of the Canadian Advisory Committee on Rock Mechanics (CACRM). It covers the application of fill in modern min- ing methods including mechanized cut and fill, undercut and fill, post pillar cut and fill and longhole pillar recovery between stabilized fill. An automated fill preparation plant and recent developments in rotary drilling of hydraulic fill conducting holes are described briefly. The paper also summarizes the findings of some of the important laboratory and field work carried out on the behaviour of fill in Canada, the United States and Australia and again draws on current information obtained from the Fill Subcommittee of the CACRM. Space limitations and unavailability of suitable material prohi- bit the summary of similar information from other countries.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bear in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked tug, Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No. 2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fau I has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by 2 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It i composed of bands of milky "buck" quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains withi quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.

The present geology of the northwest quadrant of the Circum-Pacific is the product of the interact-ions between plates or paleo-plates which have oc-curred since the earliest part of the earth's hist-ory. Almost every possible geologic structures are observable there; stable continents, collision belts, and subduction arcs as well as extensional basins. This suggests that almost all the possible tectonic processes occurred through geologic time and the present overall structure of the Quadrant is no more than a time section of the long lasting tectonic history which the region experienced.

Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.

Reservoir Engineering has developed into an art. One phase of this art is forecasting the futi. perf ormance of oil and gas reservoirs for property valuations. A discussion of the necessity for oil property valuation isgiven. A brief 'discussion of the four most common methods is included and the engineering method is explained in more detail. As an example of oil property valuations, a producing oil lease in Shackelford County, Texas, USA is evaluated.' This paper examines the new water-hydraulic (hydro powered) drill rigs that have been developed and proven in the last decade primarily in tabular, shallow-dipping, narrow-reef, hard-rock South African mines. These include - drill rigs for flat end tunnel development, narrow inclined raises and winzes, large inclines and declines and long hole based developments such as orepasses and vent raises. The hydropower technology rigs offer advantages both in safety and performance over traditional compressed air powered, hand-held development are generally more cost effective than imported oil electro-hydraulic drill rigs. Furthermore, hydro powered rigs are inherently energy efficient. The benefits of hydropower are discussed and a æcomprehensive development modelÆ is presented which demonstrates that orebodies can be accessed in significantly shorter times. æLocalisedÆ half level hydropower systems are introduced and a range of ancillary equipment available is listed.CITATION:Fraser, P D, 2012. The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.
