The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

Solid Energy New Zealand operates the Stockton Opencast Coal Mine, a unique deposit consisting of high quality hard coking and thermal coals. Stockton's uniqueness includes high variability of the shipment specifications, strict quality constraints, minimal stockpiling capacity in the coal transport chain and the variability of coal quality both vertically within the seam and laterally across the deposit. The process of resource proving and modelling results in a high level of understanding of the deposit to allow detailed planning to be undertaken. The use of computer aided mine planning tools is an important component of the mine planning at Stockton. Detailed planning is implemented in the field through selective mining practices and monitoring to minimise dilution and maximise recovery of the coal resource. The quality variability in the coal, the æjust in timeÆ approach of the coal transport chain and markedly varying quality specifications from shipment to shipment requires a large coal inventory and the mine to be driven by quality constraints rather than material movement capacities.

The Phoenix mine is one of NewmontÆs open-pit operations located in Nevada. Mining started in 2005, with the mine producing gold, copper and silver. The mine life is about 20 years. The gold grade estimation uses the Newmont in-house indicator kriging approach to handle the high variability in drill hole composite grades and support mining selectivity. Each block contains up to 200 subblocks with different gold grades. A flotation mill is designed to process oxide and sulfide ores, recovering gold, copper, and silver. An additional copper leach process is currently under study to process low gold and high copper oxide material with low copper recovery in the mill. The metallurgical recoveries and processing costs are dependent on many variables including rock formation, metallurgical domain, cyanide soluble copper and sulfide contents. This paper describes the Newmont in-house indicator kriging procedures and the revenue based mine planning software system implemented at Phoenix mine to address the complexity resulting from multi-process, multi-metal and indicator kriging model.

This subject is to be discussed in greater depth by Mike Sharwood. It has also been the subject of a mini-symposium by the Melbourne Branch of the AusIMM in October, 1993. The papers from this symposium were distributed to the membership late last year "to raise their consciousness and to promote greater awareness and understanding of the wide range of liabilities that may arise". The Curragh coal mining operation was designed and constructed to produce two coals initially at a rate of 4.3Mtpa. These are a high thermal energy steam coal primarily for domestic electricity generation and a low ash high quality coking product for the export market. Treatment of coals from four seams to achieve this requires a large and complex preparation plant and blending facilities incorporating state of the art technology. This facility was constructed during 1982/83. It has been designed for expansion to 6.8Mtpa capacity. The preparation and handling facilities were built at a cost of approximately A$80 million. Equipment includes 500 plus electric drives with a total capacity of 20 000kw. Commissioning was carried out in three phases : Staging - of the control system Coal Handling Facilities - conveyors, stackers and reclaimers for raw and product coals The Coal Preparation Plant - heavy media cyclones and froth flotation. A period of three months was devoted to the commissioning of the plant before requiring product coal to contract specification. This paper will describe the planning, implementation and results achieved.

The Australian gold industry has in recent years experienced a tremendous growth period, though not to levels prevailing at the turn of the century. There are, however, a number of dynamic factors at play which collectively indicate that it would be unwise to assume that this growth will be maintained; indeed the future discovery of viable new deposits may be insufficient to prevent an industry decline in Australia.The higher gold prices of the 1980's together with technological advances, made previously worked mining centres areas of excellent prospectivity. These resources, signposted for us by the oldtimers, are being rapidly depleted. Whilst there can be no doubt that these resources can be replaced the real question is whether it is economic to explore for new deposits when it is likely that:The cost of future exploration will increase as exploration must focus on grassroot areas with few signposts. Almost by definition this primary exploration effort will be subject to a lower success ratio.The cost of future exploration will increase as new deposits will be located in more remote areas and at depth.

Alcoa of Australia's Western Australian bauxite mining operations in the Darling Ranges, south east of Perth, present major challenges in the control of air blast. The close proximity of rural communities and the face profile make the traditional methods of air blast control difficult. An extensive blast noise monitoring programme has been established. The develop- ment of a computerised blast noise prediction model and the establishment of a radiosonde weather balloon facility have reduced blast induced complaints by a factor of ten. The meteorological factors affecting blast noise transmission are discussed and examples are given of adverse weather condit- ions for the south west region of Western Australia.

The Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is responsible for several sets of legislation, which, among other things, regulate the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods as well as every aspect of the life cycle of explosives in order to prevent explosions, fires and spillages. The legislation with particular relevance to explosives includes: The Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act 1961; the act deals with the storage, manufacture, sale, import, authorisation and use of explosives. It is primarily framed for use of explosives and fireworks in the general community but also has relevance for storage on mine sites. The Dangerous Goods (Transport) Act 1998; this act regulates the transport of explosives on public roads, but not on mine sites. The Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (MSI Act); this act and supporting regulations deal with the full spectrum of occupational health and safety in the mining industry. There is a substantial section in the regulations dealing with the use of explosives at a mine site.DoIR has identified the need for security upgrades of the Government Explosives Reserves, the need to tighten security measures at mine sites, the need for improved security checking for licensed shotfirers and the need to restrict the availability of explosives to authorised people who have had appropriate security checks. It is also clear that we need restrictions on the sale and use of ammonium nitrate (AN). A number of additional security measures are being proposed and all proposals are being refined by ongoing industry consultations. These will be adopted into new explosives regulations in association with the new Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2002 (DGS Act). Government finalised the act in June 2004. The act remains dormant until new explosives and dangerous goods regulations have been prepared. When the DGS Act and a suite of regulations are proclaimed as a package, sometime between December 2004 and April 2005, the old legislation consisting of the current two acts, will be automatically repealed. It is also proposed that all explosive regulation, including those under the MSI Act will be consolidated in one place under the DGS Act for user friendliness.

Sparse geochronological data have been combined with data on felsic suites and depositional facies of rocks to provide an overview of the development of the Arunta Block. The study provides a basis for construction of a map showing the distribution of granites and associated felsic extrusive rocks in the Anmta Block. The tectonic evolution can be subdivided into a series of significant time intervals. Only in the initial stage, to about 1880 Ma, was there any subduction-related magmatism. All later felsic magmas were crustal-derived melts. The early, pre-1880 Ma arc-related units in the SE contain small showings of Cu, probably including the small Cu deposit in the Casey Bore Inlier at the edge of the Simpson Desert. The most significant time-interval for formation of mineral deposits was 1820-1760 Ma, when volcanogenic Cu-Pb-Zn deposits formed in the Strangways Metamorphic Complex and also in the Jervois district. "A personal account of my journey from a student from suburban Melbourne in the 1970s through 40 odd years in and around the mining industry including the important events that have moulded my thinking and, as result, have formed the guiding principles of the mining contracting business and related entities that make up the Byrnecut Group. On reflection the game of chance has played a big part in the journey, from the selection of initial study based on my parents financial capability and the one and only offer of early employment by Western Mining Corporation where the formative phase of my career took place in what was the vibrant can do environment that existed in Kambalda in the 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequently the unplanned meeting with Frank Lubbock drawing me back to Kalgoorlie from Fiji in 1987 and the resultant formation of a private mining contracting business, the excitement of the mid 1980s Kalgoorlie mining environment followed by the turmoil of the 1987 stock market crash where business survival was the game, resulting in a relationship with the German based Thyssen Group.Thereafter the development of a large privately owned international multifaceted mining services group and the principles behind that growth. These include: development of strategic personnel and retention of those personnel cashflow management and debt within a private company scenario recognising opportunity for synergetic growth but insisting on market forces driving those business elements, as opposed to internal divisions group-wide sustainable business systems, particularly in relation to leading safety and training processes innovation and renewal to provide the elusive advantage in a competitive market the role of entrepreneurial small businesses in development of technology.The above principles combine to make a margin in a cut throat contracting environment, competing on the world stage against other contractors and owner mining options.CITATION:Coughlan, S, 2014. This paper describes the design of an expert system used as a part of a diagnostic system for diesel hydraulic drives. A PC-based diagnostic system ruDi (KeBler and Burgwinkel, 1993) was developed to minimise the time for diagnosis and repair work of vehicles with diesel hydraulic drives used in the mining industry. One part of ruDi is an expert system that helps to locate errors in any of a vehicle's subsystems, and supports technicians in removing the cause of a malfunction. Apart from the standard knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic transmissions, the expert system supports the interpretation of the data obtained during sophisticated engine analysis tests such as high-resolution speed analysis or high-pressure analysis of the diesel injection system. The expert system is designed to diagnose various vehicles of the same type. Data for each vehicle is stored separately allowing checks to be carried out individually for each machine. An additional feature of this system is a database interface to a Maintenance Planning and Control System (MPCS) that allows an automatic generation of work orders for the defects found during the expert system sessions.

Depending on material commodity market conditions, material contained in open pit waste disposals can hold potential value, Segregating subgrade material into separate disposals i.e. 'sub ore' stockpiles, affords open pit operators the opportunity to modify production strategies to reflect changes in market conditions. Discussion of the concept of subore stockpiling is presented. A two-step mathematical model and a nonlinear programme are employed to answer questions such as, 'how can the value of sub-ore material be determined to distinguish sub-ore from true waste?' and 'when and at what rate should sub-ore be processed?'

Consideration of the questions: (i) is it feasible to study groups of processes in a generalised way? (ii) to what extent does purpose affect the form of a process model? (iii) are there any significant, novel investig- ations which can be made by computer simulation? (iv) what long-term developments are desirable in extractive metallurgy? has led to some new broad objectives for research in hydrometallurgical process engineering. Propositions for grouping processes, developing models for different specific purposes, using a systems engineering approach and developing high technology processes are discussed, and the role of computer simulation indicated by reference to particular projects.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a ælook behindÆ the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act 2002. The more important policy considerations in the development of the Act are described along with a summary of the main provisions of the Act. The Act, together with supporting regulations and other instruments will formalise the use of risk management as a necessary discipline in the systematic management of occupational health and safety. It must be recognised that the purpose of this paper is not to provide a legal interpretation of the legislation nor is it to provide legal advice. An improved method of sample recovery for use with rotary percussion drilling has been developed. Cuttings can be recovered continuously from either dry or wet drilling, and the recovery under dry conditions is seldom below 99% of the cuttings brought to the surface by the rig. The system is designed for use with top drive drilling rigs using flush-jointed drill rods. The key feature of the system is a self-aligning mechanical seal around the drill rods. The sealing unit is removably fixed to a collar section of cas ing. the cuttings are recovered in a plastic bag attached to the bottom outlet of a cyclone. A valve at the bottom of the cyclone permits the cuttings representing various depths to I,e recovered separately for examination eind 0(iclysis. Hydrodynamic conditions such as gas dispersion, mixing intensity and solids suspension are known to govern the metallurgical performance of the flotation process. Understanding flotation cell hydrodynamics is therefore important for the optimisation of existing cells and for the design of the larger and more efficient cells which are needed to handle the finer, lower grade ores currently being mined. This paper presents the results of numerous studies that have been carried out to characterise the hydrodynamic conditions in a number of different types of flotation machines both in Australia and South Africa. Measurement techniques that have been developed to determine gas dispersion and other hydrodynamic properties in industrial flotation cells are described along with applications for their use. The results show distinct differences between the way flotation cells are operated in the two countries.

In recent years, wide consideration has had to be given to methods of improving the condition of the mine environment in many coal mines, and significant developments and changes have evolved. Thus even after substantial increases inòair flow rates at the working place (they have increased over three fold in the last generation), environmental conditions have arisen for which it has been necessary to introduce or consider: i) additional ameliorative measures, such as good housekeeping; ii) layout changes: such as Y or Z layouts; iii) homotropal ventilation; and iv) air conditioning. In certain countries, consideration has been given also to: v) additional payments reduced working times; vi) heat acclimatisation programmes; and vii) the use of cold or cooling suits At many hot and humid mines, the principal benefits from adopting (i), (ii) and (iii) have already been realised. The commercial outcomes from new mining projects or brownfields expansions often fall short of feasibility study forecasts because of technical under-performance. This paper: reviews past feasibility study performance; identifies the key drivers of underperformance; and proposes actions that can be taken to manage the risk of underperformance. There have been a number of published reviews of feasibility study performance since the 1970s. The results of these studies are summarised together with recent unpublished data. Key drivers of underperformance include inadequate metallurgical testing, simultaneously pushing a number of project parameters beyond comfortable limits and a failure to recognise the linkage between mining rate and head grade. Actions can be taken during the data acquisition phase and during the feasibility study to manage project technical risks. These generally require a more flexible approach to study management than can be achieved under a ælump sumÆ contract.
