Lithocaps are potentially voluminous zones of advanced argillic and associated argillic alteration located above the subvolcanic intrusive environment. They constitute exploration objectives for epithermal and porphyry-type deposits. High-sulphidation epithermal deposits may be sought within lithocaps, whereas low-sulphidation deposits may exist on their edges. Porphyry Cu-Au/Au deposits may be accessible beneath lithocaps if systems are telescoped sufficiently. Oxidation of the basal, pyritic parts of lithocaps may promote supergene sulphide enrichment under appropriate tectonic and climatic conditions.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach for modelling jointed and veined rock has been at the forefront of caving geomechanics research for years. A well-constructed and calibrated SRM model can capture the full rock behaviour at a macroscopic scale. Traditionally, SRM technology employed bonded particle models (BPM) due to their ability to model rock’s response to loading without prior specification of behaviour. The SRM modelling process requires the BPM to simulate intact rock and the subsequent introduction of fractures or veins by changing bonding characteristics between the particles. However, bonded particle materials have difficulty reproducing both the compressive and tensile strengths of intact rock. This and other limitations of BPM have been the driving force in exploring the potential of grain-based (2D) and bonded block (3D) models (BBM).This paper reports on recent work exploring the applicability of both BPMs and BBMs in 3D to the modelling of intact rock. The advantages and limitations of both BPMs and BBMs are addressed based on the results of numerical simulations using the PFC3D and 3DEC distinct element codes. The preliminary results suggest that BBMs are better suited for simulating intact rock behaviour than BPMs. Ongoing work aims to better qualify the applicability of BBMs under different conditions. The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferro-silicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

The Tick Hill Gold Mine is situated approximately 110 kilometres south of Mount Isa, and 14 kilometres north of the township of The Monument. It was discovered in October 1989 by Mount Isa Mines Exploration in an area which had been targeted as high in potential for copper-gold mineralization.A mining lease application was made in March 1990. Mining, and the construction of the plant and infrastructure, began'in early August 1991 after the lease was granted on 20 June of that year. Commissioning of the plant began in December 1991, and the first gold was poured on site on 31 December 1991.The development of the underground mining operation commenced in January 1992 with the drilling of the ventilation shaft. The access decline was started in March of the same year, with the first ore produced from underground in August.

Stability control plays a prominent part in the planning and execution of coal winning in the deep open cuts in the Latrobe Valley operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Different stability mechanisms affect the individual overburden and coal faces. These are the classical rotational slip in overburden and the three-dimensional tetra- hedral wedge or planar block slip in the coal faces. The stability of the overall batters is affected by the so-called "block sliding" mechanism, which is unique in Australian open cuts. The basal stability of the open cuts is affected by pressure from water in confined aquifers underlying the coal being excavated. This paper describes each of these mechanisms and the current monitoring and con- trol techniques practised by the SECV.

Mechanical models are established in accordance with the degree of mining on both sides of the coal pillar, and formulae were derived which calculated the superposition stress distribution and the width of the plastic region. The stability of the coal pillar was analysed and a reasonable size of coal pillar determined, in accordance with the elastic region rate. Mine planning for ore recovery by open stoping and pillar recovery is becoming more sophisticated, but there are basic operating constraints which must be imposed if this planning is to realise the production results on which the mine is dependant. The production reliability of an open stope is usually a high priority and common design problems can be identified. A range of practical considerations which should be considered at the mine planning stage are reviewed including equipment performance, blasting technology, ventilation requirements, development layouts, lead time, ground conditions, support, backfilling and ore recovery.

Presently the dust particle count standard is being correlated with gravimetric dust standards. Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema are also coal mining related diseases. Methane is the commonest of a number of coal mine gases. Oxygen deficiency symptoms may result from high gas content of mine air. The explosive nature of methane-air mixtures is well known. Mine gases will always present a potential threat to safety.

BlIP Minerals is a large, diversified, international mineral producer. This paper describes the company's operating strategy, and identifies the role of mineral processing in this strategy through three examples: the column flotation installation at Escondida in Chile, the leach-SX-electrowinning plant, proposed for Escondida, and the whole-ore roasting process being constructed for the Syama gold operation in Mali. It is concluded that the application of appropriate and sometimes novel mineral processing technologies can achieve significant benefits in reduced operating cost, improved product quality, and in some cases the exploitation of previously uneconomic deposits, thereby providing strategic advantages to the company.

The successful application of flotation is now over one hundred years old. However in a practical industrial sense, it still remains predominantly an art rather than a quantifiable science. Moreover, the laboratory testing, interpretation and application of the technology can still be tedious, time consuming and costly. This paper outlines the use of proven statistical design of experimentation software for rapid optimisation of flotation testing with limited representative sample utilisation. This results in less costly required testing, a more thorough understanding of results and the ability to simultaneously optimise several variables and outcomes at once. At the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing, this testing methodology has been used successfully in many metallurgical development and plant optimisation projects thereby confirming its real world utility and application.

A computer simulation is being developed for in-situ leaching of unbroken, Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide ore. Ferric chloride is the selected reagent. Experimental work showed that a diffusion control model of the kinetic aspects was better than a surface chemical reaction control model. Entrapped reactive grains were accessible to reagent in the samples tested. Precipitated sulphur did not seriously hinder the reaction.
