The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in arid areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, the Pacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinen- tal metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly re- lated to S-type granite of crustal source, that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of min- eralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metalloge- netic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASSM) offers lucrative employment opportunities to the locals of most developing countries. The major drawback of ASSM is its adverse impacts on the environment resulting from improper mining and processing techniques. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has very active ASSM activities. The artisanal and small-scale gold mining in PNG provide employment at local and national levels and the sector is an important source for inflow of foreign exchange into rural communities. However, small-scale mining activities are associated with sensitive health and environmental issues. The process of recovering gold by retorting and heating the amalgam over an open fire is a dangerous health practice. This paper discusses artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations in PNG and their impacts on the local environment.

Longhole stope overbreak has always been a source of unwanted cost within the underground mining industry, and efforts to control it using various rock reinforcement systems have long been a rock engineering challenge. At the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations trials have been carried out using an innovative cable bolt reinforcement system known as Rib-Roc. The system, based loosely on the Swedish Rib-in-Roc concept, utilises zones or ribs of heavily reinforced rock in the troublesome hangingwall and back areas of longhole stoping. The trials were carried out under a strict qualitative and quantitative scientific stope measurement program utilising rock mechanics instrumentation. Not only did the trial demonstrate the success of the system but data obtained was useful in implementing the system virtually as standard practice throughout the operation.

Standard microeconomic theory suggests that the behaviour of mineral extraction and processing firms with respect to their demand for water can be modelled and a market demand for water subsequently derived. Such a model, although an abstraction of the real world, should be able to predict the responsiveness of quantity of water demanded to change in price, and, change in demand to a range of factors including: expectations about reliability of supply, changed commodity prices for mineral production, and change in water technology and storage at mine site. This paper demonstrates that the price of water is particularly responsive to changes in demand and that although price increases would result in some additional supplies, physical constraints on supply suggest that the industry will be paying considerably higher prices for water in the future. It is recommended that the mining industry undertakes quantification of possible price increases to position itself to minimise the impact on their operating costs as well as to make responsible capital investment decisions to facilitate future expansion or commissioning of new mines. Substantial investment is required to commission a new mining venture with expected rates of return subject to risk and uncertainty due to fluctuations in world commodity markets as well as reliability of secure supplies of inputs. If a reliable supply of water was subject to uncertainty and water was a critical input for production, then the initial mine design would typically consider a range of production decisions contingent on levels of uncertainty with respect to water supply. These states or sets of water supply, will affect production decisions and future water demand. Modelling production decisions contingent on different states of nature, termed the state-contingent approach, provides a number of insights about producer behaviour under uncertainty. This paper investigates the assumptions underlying the derivation of the market demand for water by the mineral resource industry and identifies the drivers of demand and the responsiveness of the industry to change in price and supply, particularly in relation to capital investment in water-use technologies. The usefulness of these models to the mining industry is considered by reference to the increasing demand for water by the industry in Queensland, in a climate of water shortages.

In recent years a large amount of work has been done at various plants overseas, and also at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Port Pirie, South Australia, on the use of Dwight Lloyd sintering plant gases for sulphuric acid manufacture by the contact process.Several plants have modified their sintering machines and operating procedure, and some have adopted gas recirculation techniques, to obtain a relatively high proportion of the sintering plant gas at an S02 concentration acceptable to a contact acid plant 1.These adaptations were investigated at Port Pirie, and it was found that gases of suitable S02 concentration could be obtained. The results justified installation of a contact acid plant and a decision was accordingly made in 1949 to construct such a plant.However, the local conditions presented some difficulties not generally encountered at other plants, the chief differences being:a. For maintenance of production of 98% H2S04 , an unusually high S02 concentration is required, because of the prevailing high temperature 'of the purification train cooling water.b. The entire sintering operation is conducted on two large machines, 55ft. x 10ft., operating in series as "First" and "Second over" machines (a two-pass roast.) Any interruption" to either machine causes a complete interruption of plant operation and gas flow.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. In south-eastern King Island, sediments and lavas of possible Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian age have been intruded by Lower Carboniferous granitic rocks.Within the contact aureole of the Bold Head adamellite north of Grassy the sediments and lavas have been metamorphosed to hornblende hornfels facies grade. The thermal gradient within the contact aureole was small, as the hornfelses exhibit no mineral zoning over a distance of 700 ft from the adamellite.Skarns occur both within the adamellite near its contact with the country rocks, and within the country rocks as partial replacements of three dolomitic limestone horizons. The latter type, the exoskarns, commonly have an andradite-salite mineralogy and carry economic concentrations of scheelite. These resulted from the replacement of carbonate beds due to both diffusion and infiltration metasomatism. Silica, tungsten, minor sulphides, and water were introduced from the adamellite, while aluminium and iron diffused from the enclosing pelitic sediments. Calcium released during marble replacement countered the loss of iron and aluminium in the pelitic hornfelses transforming them to diopside-rich rocks.Endoskarns within the adamellite are the result of two way diffusion across the contact; calcium, aluminium, and iron diffused from sediment to adamellite as silica, potassium, sodium, and water diffused from adamellite to the sediments. From estimates of the lithostatic pressure and mole fraction of CO2, the mineral assemblages of the hornfelses imply that the temperature of metamorphism lay between 530° and 710°C. This temperature range is in good agreement with minimum temperatures, between 610° and 710°C, for the recrystallization of the marbles of the contact aureole, calculated from the determinations of the solid solution of the magnesite molecule in calcite.

The Fimiston reserve is being depleted at the rate of one million ounces per year; most of which is processed by the Fimiston plant, with the remainder being stockpiled. As for most other large open cut mines around the world, Fimiston has an excellent dispatch and tracking system. Reconciliation is used to determine how the various models used in mine planning (such as a reserve, budget and schedule models) are tracking against production. It is also used to gauge the performance of grade control estimation against production; however, analysing the results of this can be complicated and, at times, misleading. The reconciliation process involves adjusting the monthly production data to equal the mill reported tonnes and grade, plus the change in stockpiles. This adjusted number is then compared to the grade control reported tonnes and grade, the scheduled model (monthly planning model) tonnes and grade and against budget (Reserve) tonnes and grade. This paper includes explanations of all assumptions made in the reconciliation process, including the end of month closing stocks balance, the application of adjustment factors to the dispatch data to create a new balanced set of production data and the monthly sign off to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements of the North American owners. The reserve is reconciled by proved and probable classification. This tool is used to assess the robustness of the classification scheme utilised and identify any reconciliation issues as they arise. Within the Fimiston deposit there are still issues that are clouded by the assumptions made concerning the scale of observation, poor data support and the mining of the narrow lode areas of the deposit. The declared ore mined (DOM) number (which is defined in the paper) can be significantly affected by these assumptions, and these need to be clearly stated and understood when looking at the reconciliation data. The DOM tonnes and grade is a good indicator of real mine performance as it adjusts mined tonnes and grade to take into account the milled tonnes and grade each month, and prevents cumulative errors from building up in mine predicted dispatch numbers or end of period stockpiles. This number allows monthly monitoring of the mine to mill performance and allows valid comparisons to be made back to budgets and reserves over a period of time. KCGM uses three month rolling averages to monitor performance against reserve and budget models. This ensures that monthly distortions in the figures due to stockpiling issues or over mining in a particular period do not lead to false conclusions. Reconciliation performance over a longer period (12 - 18 months) is used to adjust reserve models should significant variance be observed. By closely monitoring the reconciliation performance at the Fimiston operation, fine tuning of all aspects of the grade estimation process from reserve through to grade control can be made. This allows the most accurate data to be used when planning from reserve data for the Life of Mine Plan through to grade control data for short-term mill feed.

The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

Compact and field portable infrared spectrometers have been increasingly used over the past few years by an exploration industry constantly searching for a technological edge and the ability to more accurately and rapidly assess project areas. In particular, this technology allows large amounts of data to be rapidly collected on-site and sample mineralogy, mineral crystallinity and mineral composition to be quickly assessed. In recent years, short wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy has proved useful in a wide range of geological environments and at various stages of exploration programs, from grass roots reconnaissance through drilling programs and resource evaluation. Unfortunately these data have frequently been analysed and interpreted in isolation using time consuming data analysis techniques removed from the realities of a fast moving exploration industry. This paper presents new analysis techniques which allow these data to be efficiently integrated in the exploration program. Although SWIR data contain a wealth of mineral information it is impractical to use this information in its raw form. A more effective approach involves the extraction of key characteristics of these data (ie mineralogy, mineral composition and crystallinity) as numerical values, and the integration of this ædigital mineralogyÆ with more conventional exploration datasets (eg geochemistry, coordinate data, etc). This paper demonstrates that the integrated analysis of sound geological observations, geochemical, spatial and spectral data can quickly lead to a greater understanding of the nature and distribution of target mineralisation. As a first step, software driven pattern matching routines enable the identification of the major clay mineral species in a series of samples (eg kaolinite, montmorillonite and sericite). This allows the major alteration facies and their spatial distribution to be identified. Quantification of diagnostic absorption feature characteristics then allows more accurate determinations of mineralogy to be made (eg mineral composition and crystallinity). Examples of the application of SWIR analysis for alteration mapping from selected porphyry and epithermal systems from around the Pacific Rim are discussed. The data presented are derived from a variety of locations and sample types including drill core, ridge and spur rock chip samples, soil samples and geochemical pulps. In these large alteration systems, the spectral data can be used to describe and map the distribution of various alteration facies as many of these are characterised by clay and phyllosilicate mineral assemblages and are detected by SWIR analysis (eg smectite, chlorite, biotite, illite, muscovite, kaolinite, dickite, pyrophyllite, alunite, etc). In addition, the ability to evaluate even subtle trends in mineral crystallinity and composition is often vital in these systems when looking for vectors towards higher temperature parts of the system. In addition to detailed evaluation of mineralogy, the integration of digital mineralogy data with geochemical data leads to the ability to describe not only geochemically anomalous intersections or regions but also to recognise associations between subtle changes in mineralogy and target mineralisation. This is often important because understanding these mineralogical associations can lead to more accurate targeting and rapid assessment of the project.

Material sampling theory is well established in mineral process monitoring, improvement and control. It has been much enhanced by fundamental contributions due to Gy. When GyÆs sampling theory is applied to sampling inspection and monitoring, it provides estimates of average quality or extent of contamination. It also provides estimates of uncertainty, but these often ignore uncertainty in estimated variograms or other measures of variability. Risk assessment is often an implied task in sampling inspection and quality monitoring. A valid technique of risk assessment needs to take into account the uncertainty in the variational measures themselves. Standard statistical tolerance limit calculations which do take such uncertainty into account can be adapted to develop a technique for handling uncertainty in variational measures such as the variogram. Data from a published example is used to illustrate the technique.

Stresses around mine openings at depth can cause the surrounding rock to fail, releasing stored strain energy. When this happens, the rock may literally explode or `burst' into the opening without warning. As mining progresses deeper into the earth, the possibility of seismic events and rock bursts increases. Researchers at the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) are currently studying seismic activity in three underground hard-rock mines in the United States: the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD; the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID; and the Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, ID. Waveforms from seismic events are recorded by personal-computer-based hardware and software. This information is archived and transferred from the mine sites to the USBM via modem communication links. Then, using USBM-developed software, the events are analysed to determine various parameters, including magnitude, frequency, and location. In addition, researchers are modelling the deep levels of the Homestake Mine using a finite-element code. These models generate stress and displacement values for a given loading condition. By studying material properties, in situ stresses, and seismic activity along with actual scope sequencing, researchers can make correlations between stresses induced by mining and the frequency and magnitude of seismic events. Information on seismic events coupled with results from finite-element analyses have increased understanding of rock mass behavior and the mechanisms that may lead to rock bursts. Optimisation of slope sequencing designs as a result of these studies could reduce rock burst hazards.

While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it. Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. The following thesis is an outcome of an investigation undertaken by the writer, at the suggestion of Professor Skeats, of the dykes and associated auriferous reefs of the Walhalla-Wood's Point belt, with the view of determining what relation, if any, existed between the petrological nature and the extent of llietasomatic alteration undergone by the dykes, and the genesis and localization of the gold.Although the greater part of the writer's time in the field and laboratory was occupied in studying the dykes and auriferous occurrences, a study was also made of the general geology as a basis for the special investigation. In addition, it soon became evident in the field that secondary enrichment had played a marked part in re-concentrating the gold and some interesting data in this connection have been collected. For example, indubitable evidence has been found of nuggets of gold having been formed by secondary processes.

The largest single operating loss in many hydrometallurgical plants is the poor recovery of leached product in the solids sent to tailings. Any reduction in the concentration of the valuable species in this stream will improve the project economics. Conventional design, to reduce the soluble loss, is to increase the number of wash stages or the wash/water ratio. This approach is limited in effectiveness as it can only reduce the soluble loss to that dictated by the concentration in the returning solution. For copper plants this concentration is set by the recovery in the solvent extraction (SX) plant. When using a single grade of SX feed a single grade of SX raffinate is produced generally with five to seven per cent of the copper still remaining in solution. An alternative approach has been developed by Cognis Corporation and implemented on a number of recent projects using engineering input from Miller Metallurgical Services. The SX plant feed is æsplitÆ into two different streams: a high-grade stream containing up to 75 per cent of the copper and a low-grade stream with the remaining copper. This Split-CircuitÖ concept has significant benefits in terms of both copper recovery and reduction in acid costs. The high-grade stream has the bulk of the copper removed and the raffinate sent directly back to the leach; to fully re-use the acid that has been generated during extraction in the SX process. The recycling of this higher concentrated acid stream considerably reduces the acid in the raffinate sent to washing steps. It represents a significant saving in acid consumed via the tails stream. The low-grade stream has a significantly lower SX feed grade and hence produces a lower raffinate acid and copper concentration. This lowers the economic species in the wash solution and hence reduces the soluble loss accordingly. Other operating improvements are realised with lower neutralisation costs (with the lower acid in the wash stream) and from a decreased need for in-circuit neutralisation to improve SX performance. The SX plant itself is also split into a high-grade extraction and a low-grade extraction stream to enable the low-grade raffinate to be produced. A number of circuit alternatives have been utilised that have provided a range of benefits. The circuit concept has been included into both new and existing plant operation. As a result of this experience other methods of incorporating the concept into a circuit have been developed.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender.
