1991 saw the completion of a three-year $1.1 million research and development program in mineral sands beneficiation, funded in two associated projects by the Australian mineral sands industry through AMIRA, and carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre. It is believed to be the largest R&D project in mineral sands ever conducted by a university research group. It covered dry plant operation, and delivered several products to the industrial sponsors, including: ò A detailed characterisation of the radiation properties, mineralogy and size distribution of inhaleable dust arising in dry plants. ò New process models of magnetic and electrostatic separators. ò New on-line instruments for elemental assay (in association with AMDEL) and bulk conductivity measurements of dry process streams. ò Demonstration and evaluation of the Magstream magnetohydrostatic separation technology.

The CSA Mine is located at Cobar, New South Wales, where it was in continuous operation from 1966 to the time it went into receivership on 29 January 1998. When it closed it was under the ownership of Golden Shamrock. Glencore International, in conjunction with Mt Lyell Mining, undertook a due diligence study to determine the feasibility to re-open the mine. This envisaged operating CSA Mine as a low-cost, copper concentrate producer under the direction of Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL). The new workforce would consist of contractor trades people in operating functions under the co-ordination of CMPL staff, both on the surface and underground. This was the key to establishing the new culture in the workforce. The orebodies at CSA Mine are steeply dipping with copper-lead-zinc mineralisation in zones of strong alterations in a fine-grained siltstone host sequence. The predominant economic minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The major gauge minerals are pyrrhotite, pyrite, chlorite, sericite and quartz. Ore for the project is being developed and mined from two high grade copper lenses within the QTS North system. Chalcopyrite occurs in two forms. The first consists of coarse chalcopyrite grains in association with pyrrhotite or pyrite. The second form consists of chalcopyrite grains intergrown with pyrrhotite grains. This form of chalcopyrite is quite rare. It allows electrochemical interactions between grains, resulting in rapid oxidation of the chalcopyrite surface. Physically this ore looks like, and has been mistaken for æpeacock oreÆ, ie bornite, but is infact oxidised chalcopyrite.

Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

FaulIing west of the Mount Isa mine is described and is shown to be related to three groups of folds that have been recognized in the area. The first period of faulting postdates the first generation folding; these faulIs are regional faults (tectonic discontinuities) which are folded by second generation folds. The faulting accompanying the second generation folding divides the area west of the Mount Isa mine into four structurally and metamorphically identifiable blocks. The most prominent of these second generation faults is the Mount Isa Fault, which is characterized by a number of distinct zones of intense second generation folding and the presence of localized layers of mylonite. Only limited evidence for brittle deformation has been observed and the major movement appears to be associated with the plastic deformation of the rocks. Confined to the areas of second generation folding in the Mount Isa Fault are numerous third generation kink folds. A detailed description of the Mount Isa and other faulIs is presented together with evidence for their existence. The displacement accompanying this faulting cannot be established because of the complexity of the structure.Postdating these faults and all the folding of the area are minor cross faults.

Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite û montmorillonite-kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a CO2-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

Naturally occurring organic plastics have been in use for over 2,000 years. Plastics based on chemically modified organic polymers date back only about 100 years, and those based on synthetic polymers about 50 years. The development of ,these two latter groups up to the present day is outlined, and the basic techniques currently available for polymer-building and modi-fication (blending, copolymerisation, quantitative and qualitative struc-tural control, and'si de-group reactions)-are reviewed.

Prior to 1986, users of satellite based remotely sensed data were almost exclusively reliant on the United States Landsat series of satellites to monitor our Earth's resources. This situation changed when France, Belgium and Sweden launched SPOT-1 in 1986. The year of 1988 saw the Japanese also enter into the earth resource satellite business. The Japanese launched an earth resource monitoring satellite with an emphasis on marine resources, hence the name MOS-1 (Marine Observation Satellite). Many more remote sensing instruments are planned for launch by these nations and others in the next 10 years.

I would like to start by thanking The AusIMM and CSIRO for organising this excellent conference and inviting me to give a keynote address. Today I will focus on some broad observations of our industry, and leave the technical discussion to my colleagues who are presenting specific papers covering a wide range of topics. In preparation for this paper, I did a little research into the early history of the Pilbara iron ore industry. I was fascinated to read a quote attributed to Harry P Woodward, the Government Geologist in the late 19th century, before Federation. Mr Woodward described the Pilbara as an iron ore country and observed that æthere is enough to supply the whole world should the present sources be worked outÆ. Mr WoodwardÆs prediction could be viewed as wishful thinking and certainly at Hamersley Iron I would gladly envisage the Pilbara supplying the worldÆs entire iron ore needs! In reality, Western Australia accounted for 162 million tonnes or 36 per cent of seaborne trade in 2001. An impressive effort, but not quite the total world supply as Mr Woodward imagined. But we shouldnÆt dismiss these historical musings out of hand û perhaps we could see it as a challenge for the industry to æwork outÆ the present sources. We all know there is abundant iron ore in the Pilbara, and I expect it is only a matter of time until our collective technical expertise and sheer hard work will enable us to utilise its greater range of ore types. Opening up new markets will be a key pathway to creating additional value from the Pilbara ores. Today I will examine the state of play of our industry and the major influences that shape our business at present, before considering what the future might hold for us. I canÆt guarantee the accuracy of my crystal ball, but the stability and long-term nature of our industry does enable some reasonable hypotheses on where we are heading. I will also spend some time examining the way in which the iron ore producers are working to maximise the value of their resource base and obtain more from their existing capital assets.

An important aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineral processing attributes, which leads to improved orebody understanding. One of these attributes is flotation performance. Several methods have been developed as indicators for flotation performance, including batch testing leading to kinetic information and the standard grade-recovery curve. This paper makes a preliminary statistical comparison between a newly proposed geometallurgical batch flotation procedure and the æstandardÆ batch flotation test commonly used to measure flotation performance in the laboratory. The new test uses much less material than the standard test, and is much faster. It is concluded that the new method follows the final recovery of the standard method well, suggesting that it will be effective in reflecting ore variability for geometallurgical purposes. Comparison of the methods based on the full grade-recovery curve shows less agreement, but this may be due to the fact that the curve is sensitive to the particular experimental set-up and conditions, which make such comparisons quantitatively challenging. The physical properties of monazite and the minerals with which it is associated in east coast beach sands are studied and discussed. Possible means for improving recovery are examined. In particular, it is suggested that the practice of splitting the heavy mineral concentrate into two parts as a preliminary to treatment in separate "rutile" and "zircon" mills can be modified in a simple fashion by the addition of an extra magnetic separation stage so as to aid monazite recovery.INTRODUCTIONBeach sand deposits on the east coast of Australia are a major source of rutile and zircon, and supply 80 per cent or more of world requirements. The deposits also contain a small amount of monazite, averaging about 0.5 per cent of the total heavy minerals. Yet despite a steady price in recent years of £150-160 per ton, monazite production has remained relatively small.On the basis of rutiIe production, potential monazite production on the east coast was about 1,500 tons in 1956, but only 102 tons of high-grade concentrate was produced. The main deterrent to increased production has probably been the capital cost of the necessary equipment. Separate electrostatic and magnetic equipment and separate table concentration and drying constitute a considerable outlay for a by-product contributing 4 to 5 per cent of the revenue from rutiIe.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss monazite concentration generally and to suggest modifications to flowsheets, which may facilitate monazite production while maintaining the main objective, simple and cheap means for maximum rutile production.

ROES« is a proposed new mining system for underground hard rock mines. Ore is accessed from within a shaft, which is located close to or within the stope, and pitched either vertical or within approximately 20 degrees of vertical. The shaft is designed to exclude personnel entry so production drilling and explosive placement is done using remotely controlled or automated machines. Routine remotely controlled survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope is typically done following each blast. The survey may include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation and geotechnical characteristics. Blastholes are surveyed before placement of explosives. This provides mine operators and engineers with real-time data, allowing them to monitor production performance and risk factors so that they can make rapid changes as required. ROES« is designed to apply to open stoping or sublevel caving situations either in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein orebodies. The technologies developed for ROES« will also have potential applications to block caving operations to reduce the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES« will reduce the amount of stope-associated development by about half and therefore will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at significantly reduced cost. Other savings are expected to flow from the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity. CSIRO and Orica Mining Services are developing the required technology and AMIRA is seeking sponsorship for a project to trial the mining method. This paper details the ROES« method, expected benefits and applications and includes typical stope and mining block designs and design requirements.

Methane and fire hazards have a vital effect on work safety and continuity of mining plant operation. In the 1990s, the SMP hazards monitoring and ventilation control systems, based on continuous measurement of air parameters, were put into operation at nearly 30 Polish mines. These systems provide continuous measurement of methane concentration within the range of zero to 100 per cent with automatic switching off of electrical energy immediately after detection of potentially explosive conditions. Early detection of coal spontaneous combustion and open fires is made by continuous measurements of CO, CO2, smoke and O2 content in mine air as well as temperature changes in air and rock mass. The essence of the system is intrinsic safety of all underground instrumentation and uninterrupted central power supply from the surface. All abnormal and critical states are signalled to the mine control room. These trigger alarm and emergency procedures. The computer based ventilation monitoring and control system also performs the function of an expert system for fire detection and underground fire fighting. The mine control operator (dispatcher) makes use of stored data in computer escape route schemes and procedures for the safe withdrawal of miners from hazardous areas. The operator can put in motion intrinsically safe alarm signalling units and banners with programmed messages indicating escape routes.

Roadheaders have had a chequered history in hard rock excavation in Australia since their introduction into the country in 1972. This has resulted in a poor reputation among both clients and contractors and subsequent reluctance to design tunnels and underground space around their performance characteristics.This has now changed because of the introduction into Australia of a new breed of Roadheader, the Mitsui. This paper sets out the history of development of the Mitsui range of Roadheaders. It describes the process which resulted in the introduction of this new machine, its performance to-date and the characteristics which have contributed to the success of the machine. The combination of these factors have led to a change in attitude to the use of Roadheaders in underground excavations.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. Mochia mine, in culmination of depillaring operations, fired India's largest underground pillar blast consuming 145 tonnes of explosive and yielding 0.55 million tonnes of ore in June 1994. To protect main mine structures (situated at a distance of 250 to 350 m from the blast site) from resultant ground vibrations, the charge per delay was restricted to 2300 kg. The post-blast observations revealed that no damage was caused to these structures. However, the damage assessment survey of the mine workings situated in close proximity revealed a general trend in consonance with the distance from the blast and found to be well correlated with peak particle velocity.

By 1996 ground control-related problems at Brunswick Mine had raised serious concerns regarding the safe and economical extraction of large portions of the reserves. These difficulties were mainly caused by high stress levels in pillars, instabilities resulting from wide spans supported by ageing support elements, and chronic difficulties supplying rock fill from the surface quarry to the underground workings, which resulted in many large voids remaining open for long periods of time. Significant changes have been implemented at the site since 1996, amongst which were a change of mining method, the introduction of paste backfill, the establishment of stress management measures, and the introduction of shotcrete on a large-scale. This paper focuses on the regional ground conditions associated with both the previously used primary-secondary mining method and the newly implemented pyramidal pillarless technique, as well as on some of the stress management measures implemented at the mine.

The results of iron ore exploration in Western Australia between '1961 and 1964 are outlined, with particular.reference to the Hamersley Iron Province. Exploration during: these three years has increased the known resources of the-,Statle from 275 million tons to almost 9,000 million tons of high- grade hematite ore. Surface oxidation is one of the most important factors that influence the flotation selectivity and recovery in the processing of complex sulphide ores. It is an inherent part of surface chemical reactions that determine whether the surface film formed on a sulphide mineral will act as a hydrophobic or hydrophilic one. Because of the highly complex surface chemistry and mineralogy involved the results of flotation tests may often be difficult to interpret. In this paper, the flotation behaviour of nickel-copper ores processed in the Sudbury area is discussed with emphasis on the effect of oxidation on individual minerals, primarily pyrrhotite. In general, moderate oxidation of a freshly ground ore promotes the flotability of all principal sulphides in the ore leading to a bulk flotation concentrate. The ease of individual mineral flotability under normal aeration conditions, which is chalcopyrite > pentlandite > pyrrotite, changes to pentlandite > chalcopyrite > pyrrhotite under oxygen-deficient conditions. This behaviour is correlated with the catalytic activity of these minerals for oxygen reduction. On the other hand, preferential oxidation of pyrrhotite may lead to a selectivity increase in flotation. Such a behaviour has been noted in the flotation of a pyrrhotite-rich process stream. The results have been discussed in the light of fundamental electrochemical interactions involving pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and grinding media and a mechanism has been proposed to explain the selectivity.

Industrial relations on Australian and New Zealand resource projects can be volatile. Therefore investors have become increasingly aware over the years that sound industrial relations during construction is vital to the overall success of their project. There has been a wide range of actual industrial relations performance, project by project, and the degree. of success often directly correlates with the degree and thoroughness of pre-project planning. However, although many projects have been crippled by delays and cost overruns because of labour disputes, good results are achievable. Total commitment to the project by all parties involved is essential and it is up to the employers to seek out this commitment and not just trust mother luck. Industrial relations must be taken very seriously as the price of failure can render a resource project unviable.
