Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A model for column bioleaching is investigated to identify and understand aspects of bacteria in bioleaching applications, which have implications in heap bioleaching operations. The model is used to simulate scenarios that would otherwise be time consuming to perform experimentally. This study uses a model of bacterial transport and attachment/detachment to ore particles, with a bioleaching model for the depletion of a copper-sulfide, also accounting for liquid and gas flow and gas/liquid oxygen mass transfer. The model includes aspects such as oxygen and ferrous ion consumption, coupled with leaching of a copper-sulfide via the shrinking core model. The model is used to investigate how the rate of leaching is affected by the bacterial concentration in the columns, by the bacterial regeneration of the leaching oxidant ferric ions. The model is also used to assess the impact of oxygen limitation and inoculation method on the copper leaching. Some comparison of the model with experimental data will be shown.

The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) operates the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine and process plant on the island of Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara (Barat)  NTB, Indonesia. The plant consists of a nominal capacity 120 000 t/d conventional semi-autogenous ball milling crushing (SABC) circuit followed by sulfide flotation to produce a bulk copper concentrate for sale. Process control is effected by a plant wide distributed control system that overlays an extensive integrated programable logic controller (PLC) framework. The system is enhanced by a supervisory expert control system.Since plant commissioning in September 1999, over US$4 million has been expended as part of a systematic continuous improvement approach to optimise plant control performance. Works completed to date include: redesign and upgrade of architecture of the control system to ensure long-term system reliability, security and upgradeability and to provide a suitable platform for advanced control; integration of supervisory and advanced control tools, techniques and instrumentation; and implementation of sound network communication and plant data reporting tools. This paper outlines the evolution of process control and associated systems and tools that contribute to successful operation and ongoing performance optimisation at Batu Hijau.

The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand near the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 45 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. The Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) is owned jointly by New Zealand Oil & Gas Limited (NZOG) and private investors.   The project has followed a long and difficult road towards project implementation which is now a reality with mine construction scheduled to commence in November 2005. The first stage of the project, the consent and land access process has been the most difficult. Resource consents for the project were first applied for, granted and appealed in 1998. A second round of modified resources consents followed a similar path in 2001. Following consultation with a range of parties including local and central government as well as the Department of Conservation, in March 2004 the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through Department of Conservation land. In October 2004, the Environment Court issued a Memorandum of Consent granting resource consents with conditions that had been negotiated between PRCC and the appellants.   The second stage of the project, investigation and design, commenced in December 2004 and was completed in June 2005 with the PRCC board ratifying the project capital and operating budgets. While the investigation and design work was proceeding, PRCC were also engaged in securing private equity and bank debt funding for the project. Formal Board approval to proceed with project construction was granted in September 2005 following completion of fund raising.   The project consists of a number of significant construction activities, namely: +        10.5 km of mine access road through previous logged and virgin rain forest; +        2.2 km of tunnel through metamorphic rock; +        a coal preparation plant about 8.3 km from the mine portal; +        an underground coal preparation plant; and +        a major slurry pump station, high and low pressure underground water supply systems to support hydraulic mining units and underground coal transport respectively.   Project construction is expected to be completed in April 2007 with completion of the ventilation shaft. Mine production will commence in December 2006 with coal from pit bottom development which will be carried out by the mine owner.

The Bendigo Goldfield is AustraliaÆs second largest goldfield, having produced 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Development of the modern decline mine, initially for underground exploration and bulk sampling, commenced in 1998. The project is targeting new reefs below and along from historic workings beneath the city of Bendigo. The major technical challenge for the project is the inability to solely use drill core gold assays to estimate the grade of reefs, due to the coarsegrained nature of gold mineralisation, known as the nugget effect. In 2002, a program of bulk sampling commenced, resulting in the development of factors for converting drill hole grades to in situ reef grades. In mid 2006 commercial production commenced following the construction of a 600 000 t/yr processing plant adjacent to the Kangaroo Flat Mine portal, with plant feed being derived from four reefs in the Sheepshead and Deborah lines of reef. In early 2007 it became clear that the initial ore reserves had been overestimated, leading to an immediate change of strategy from production to exploration. A cash conservation program was also put in place. Exploration refocused onto the more historically productive Garden Gully and New Chum lines of reef, whilst a new grade estimation tool based primarily on the visual assessment of drill core was implemented. Immediate exploration success occurred with the discovery of four reefs in the Garden Gully line in early 2007. Successful step-out drilling during the year led to the decision to undertake trial mining in Gill reef. Trial production commenced in June 2008 and includes the processing of discrete ore blocks and the introduction of selective mining techniques. This paper examines the steps that have been taken to refocus exploration and to gain confidence in new exploration results, particularly through the visual grade estimation technique and assessment of trial mining Gill reef on the Garden Gully line. In addition, project factors relating to human skills, community relationships and financial management in a dynamic external environment are also addressed.

"Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Variography can be used to estimate the variance of the lot mean for different sampling modes.Gy also defined weighting error, which is made if a simple average is calculated from the assays of samples taken from a continuous object (eg from a process stream) where the flow rate varies with time and is correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the stream.The effect on sampling uncertainty of the three sampling modes and their interaction with the following factors in estimating the uncertainty of the mean concentration is studied using simulated lots, and lots having heterogeneity patterns similar to those of real data sets, including the effect of: the type of heterogeneity (random, grading and clustered heterogeneity patterns) increment size and number employing composite sampling weighting error. Prior to the commencement of mining, the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of the waste rock to be produced by an open cut mining operation is assessed by a variety of techniques carried out on drill-hole samples. These include, among others, acid base accounting (ABA), net acid generation (NAG) testing, and kinetic testing. Based on the results obtained, a strategy for the identification, separation and selective placement of waste rock having different potentials to form ARD is developed. During the course of mining, the waste rock classification scheme will be re-assessed periodically to confirm that it is appropriate. This re-evaluation may result in a change in classification scheme, and waste rock dump samples may be obtained for ARD assay purposes to confirm the appropriateness of the revised scheme. The paper describes the evolution over time of the scheme used to classify waste rock at a major open pit gold operation in New South Wales, Australia, including the development of a hydrological model. To confirm the appropriateness of the revised scheme, ARD assay testing was carried out on drill-hole samples collected from dumps having different ARD potential designations, including Non-Acid Forming (NAF), Potentially Acid Forming (PAF), and Low Grade Ore stockpiles. The results of the ARD assay testing and water quality monitoring confirmed the appropriateness of the ARD potential designations and the revised classification scheme, which has been adopted.

Prediction of ground deformation caused by soft ground tunnelling is an important problem facing design engineers. The ground deformations are caused by the closure of the gap formed around the tunnel due to the tunnelling procedure and soil intrusion via the tunnel face into the tunnel. There are three different approaches that are commonly used in practice to estimate the ground deformations due to tunnelling, namely, empirical methods, analytical methods and finite element methods. One of the important issues of tunnelling in urban areas is the assessment of the likely impact on adjacent pile foundations of ground movements arising from tunnel construction. The main objectives of this paper are two-fold: first, to assess the available methods to estimate the tunnelling-induced ground deformations, and second, to examine the effect of such ground deformations on adjacent piles. Analytical solutions to predict the tunnelling-induced ground deformation developed by the authors are used in this study. These estimated ground deformations are imposed on the pile in simplified boundary element analyses to compute pile responses. The influence of various factors such as tunnel geometry, ground loss ratio, pile diameter and ratio of pile length to tunnel depth are examined in this study.

The Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator of OZ Minerals Limited in South Australia was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. It has a design ore throughput of eight million tonnes per year (Mt/yr). While the flow sheet has many items in common with other plants treating ores from iron oxide-hosted copper-gold deposits, the Prominent Hill concentrator also has some unique features. Plant design has been based on a 'template' of the very successful Ernest Henry concentrator. Initial options considered for processing Prominent Hill copper-gold ore are briefly examined as well as potential complications arising from the presence of a considerable tonnage of 'gold-only' material present in the deposit. Metallurgical test work and the subsequent decisions leading to the selection of a conventional crushing, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and rougher flotation circuit is discussed. One particular difference with other plants treating this ore type is that metallurgical tests and mineralogical studies identified that rougher concentrate had to be reground to a P80 of 20 - 25 microns or finer for adequate liberation of fluorine-bearing minerals. Subsequent satisfactory separation of fluorine-rich gangue material from the valuable copper sulfides requires highly efficient cleaner flotation to make a commercial quality copper-gold concentrate. Xstrata Technology's IsaMillÖ and Jameson Cell technologies developed to meet similar taxing fine grinding and flotation duties for the treatment of the refractory zinc-lead-silver ores of the Carpentaria-Mount Isa Mineral Province were selected for regrinding and cleaner flotation. Plant design has features aiding ergonomics for ease of operation and maintenance not commonly seen in recent projects with large sulfide flotation concentrators.

The genesis of giant hematite ore deposits in northwest Australia remains a contentious topic in part because key evidence supporting a unifying genetic model has not been found at all deposits. In particular, several papers have proposed that carbonate replacement of silica layers in banded iron formation (BIF) by basinal brines is a requisite first step toward ore formation. This initial hypogene stage is inferred primarily from the presence of silica-poor, carbonate-rich rocks found below ore and along normal faults at the Mount Tom Price and Giles Mini deposits. However, until recently such rocks have not been identified at the largest martite-microplaty hematite deposit, Mount Whaleback. In this study, samples of the upper Mount McRae Shale are examined for their chemistry, mineralogy and petrography. These samples were collected from several key locations, including within drill core that penetrates an area immediately beneath ore along the Mount Whaleback fault at Mount Whaleback. Compared to unaltered black shale from Wittenoom Gorge in the north and altered black and red shale at Mount Whaleback, reddish-green shale below the Mount Whaleback deposit is significantly enriched in MgO and CaO and depleted in SiO2. Samples of this shale consist predominantly of fine- to medium-grained dolomite and ankerite cut by chlorite and carbonate veins, contrasting with unaltered equivalents that contain mostly stilpnomelane, K-feldspar and relatively minor carbonates. This alteration is distinct from assemblages developed during regional metamorphism, and possibly represents hydrothermal alteration after metamorphism. Although several questions remain unanswered, these results support models that invoke an early hypogene stage during the formation of the martite-microplaty hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province.

A series of physical tests have been conducted to determine the actual performance of bunton to shaft side wall connections typically used in new shaft construction in South Africa. The test set-up is described, together with the applied loading, which incorporates a cyclical load component and a quasi-static load component, in an attempt to simulate actual conditions in the shaft. The test results are given and it is shown that generally the performance is adequate, provided double-slotted holes are not used. Generally the fatigue performance is found to be good, with the only exception being cases where the bottom of the bunton is lower than the seating level for the bunton to side wall connection. Arising from the tests, typical design values of connection stiffness, strength and fatigue life are proposed and a design procedure including these three key aspects of connections is described.

Historically, the silica content of zinc concentrates treated at Cominco's Trail Operations has been low. Silica in the roaster calcine seldom exceeded 1.5 per cent because of the low silica content of concentrate from Cominco's Pine Point mine. With the shutdown of Pine Point, alternate sources of concentrate were required and it was anticipated that calcines containing greater than two per cent silica (with excursions above three per cent) would have to be treated. Previous experience indicated that the existing leaching circuit could not tolerate such high levels. Therefore, a research program was undertaken to identify the key factors affecting silica precipitation; to compare different process alternatives; and to make recommendations for modifications to the existing plant. A project to modify and upgrade the leaching circuit has now been completed. Calcines with higher silica contents are successfully treated, but the upper limit of the circuit is unknown. The results of the research work will be discussed and the new leaching plant will be described. Recent operating results will also be presented.

The cylinder test allows us to determine the expansion of a copper cylinder by the detonation of an explosive charge inside. This test, originally designed for military explosives, has been adapted for industrial explosives with non-ideal behaviour. From data obtained with this test and known physical relationships, an analytical procedure has been developed to calculate the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters for five ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and six emulsion-type explosives. A new radial wall expansion function is proposed considering a non-zero initial velocity with the consequent positive Gurney energy at unit relative volume. A set of equations is established to determine the JWL parameters, three of them obtained at the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) point and the other three at different relative volumes. These equations, along with some constraints to ensure a physically sound solution, are solved for the JWL parameters by a non-linear least squares scheme. A 2D Lagrangian axisymmetric finite elements (FE) numerical model is developed for each tested explosive to validate the analytical results, in terms of expansion histories, with good agreement. The Dampier Port Upgrade Project (DPU) involves an upgrade to Hamersley IronÆs Parker Point iron ore port facility at Dampier, Western Australia. The $US700 million DPU Project will increase Hamersley IronÆs shipping capacity at Dampier from 72 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 116 Mtpa. The DPU Project comprises a new car dumper facility and rail spur, an upgrade to the existing stockyard and conveying system, a new screen-house and a 450 m wharf extension with two new shipping berths and a new ship-loader. This paper discusses the innovative design and construction of the new car dumper facility, which is capable of automatically unloading 240 car iron ore trains at a rate of 10 000 t/h. The facility design is unique compared to more conventional designs currently in operation, and greatly improves operation and maintenance functions.

Control of complex machinery through the internet is investigated through the construction of a vehicle prototype developed using off-the- shelf hardware. The vehicle was able to be controlled remotely through the use of a client side interface connected to a steering wheel and foot pedals. By attaching sensors to the vehicle, data could be collected from which one could infer the effectiveness of such a control system. The effect of latency on control was monitored by the introduction of an artificial latency, simulating a wide variety of internet-related issues, such as unstable connections and dropouts. Sensor data could then be used to gain an understanding of how the system could be improved though either control or interface design. A path tracking experiment was conducted to gather controllability data and it was found that such a system is plausible within a reasonable range of latencies. It is expected an area of future research would be an extension of this current project, applying the information gained to real world control systems.

A background characterisation study was carried out in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, New Mexico, to: quantify naturally occurring contaminant loads from mineralised areas; define site-specific background concentrations; and to determine key factors controlling spatial and temporal variations in contaminant concentrations. The study included a comprehensive sampling and testing program (paste pH/EC, ABA, leach extraction tests) of soil/bedrock from mineralised areas (including erosional scars), and a ground water and surface water quality monitoring program in selected mineralised watersheds. Results demonstrate that high concentrations of contaminants occur naturally in ground and surface water draining the mineralised area of the Red River basin. The erosional scars were found to represent the major source of acid rock drainage (ARD) (~66 per cent) in this area due to: high rates of weathering and erosion, which continually exposes sulfide-bearing outcrops; and high rates of run-off as a result of high elevation and lack of vegetation. The scar material is generally very acidic (paste pH ranges from 8.5 to 1.5; average = 3.6) with highly elevated concentrations of sulfate and leachable metals. The composition and concentration of leachable metals vary significantly, not only between scars but also within a given scar. While all streams draining the various scar watersheds are highly acidic, each has a characteristic æfingerprintÆ of sulfate and metal concentrations. Most of the run-off from the scars infiltrates into alluvial debris flow aprons and reaches the Red River via groundwater flow.

The design, construction and operation ofa laboratory scale rotary pot kiln are outlined. Charges ofup to 3 kg can be heated to temperatures up to 1200°C in a controlled atmosphere. Some examples of pyrometallurgical investigations carried out using the kiln are briefly described, including thermal reactivation ofcarbon using steam at 550-850°C, high temperature testing ofkiln liners for corrosion resistance to fluoride, and calcination oflimestone. Results obtained from these trials allow either direct scale-up to the Engineering Chemistry Laboratory's pilot-scale (50-100 kg/hr) rotary kiln or modifications to be made to commercial scale processes and/or equipment.
