There is a plethora of activities that have been, and continue to be, performed to improve the health, safety and well-being of workers involved in resource industry activities. These activities include implementation of risk management systems, performing risk assessments, constructing bow-ties, implementing critical control management systems, undertaking personal, process and functional safety initiatives, implementing psychological and physical health as well as industrial hygiene programs. Despite the significant work that has occurred over the last several decades, unacceptable levels of fatalities, injuries and illnesses continue to persist as evidenced by Safe Work Australia statistics.

Visual computing opens the design process to a wider audience and allows rapid communication of mine plans to all stakeholders. The integration of software and hardware technologies that take advantage of a graphical environment will continue to improve both long-term and short-term mine design (Figure 1). A good design must be adaptive to respond to decision changes as the mine develops and more information becomes available. The constraints on mine design predicate careful analysis in order to operate the mine as efficiently and safely as possible.Continuous improvement in mining is assured by developing innovative technologies that target mine survey, drill and blast, modelling, short-term design and pit and stope optimisers. The design life of a mine has to be sufficiently long to ensure the mine is commercially successful, justifying the high start-up capital costs. Being able to execute a plan so that it honours the design realises the rewards of computerised mine planning and the long-term investment in data acquisition.

Mine dust is the most serious occupation hazard in coalmines. And many coal workers suffer from pneumoconiosis because of long-term inhalation of respirable dust. Reducing the dust concentration of workplaces by effective technical means is an important way to prevent coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to overcome deficiencies in existing dust control technology for underground mining, especially the disadvantage of water spray technology mounted on roadheaders or continuous miners, the authors developed an integrated dust suppression technology utilising foam for fully mechanised heading faces. This paper presents an overview of the principles, materials, equipment and application of this technology. Among these, a jet type foaming device and a green foaming agent were developed, which can realise the goal of efficient preparation of foam. In addition, an arc fan nozzle used for foam spraying was invented, which can effectively cover and enwrap the dust produced by the roadheader at the cutting point and achieve the goal of efficient utilisation of foam. This dust suppression application of the proposed foam technology was investigated on fully mechanised heading faces. The results show that the dust concentration was cut down significantly with a dust suppression efficiency of greater than 85 per cent, an increase of over 30 percentage points compared to the water spray system. This study demonstrates that this foam technology can play an important role in dust suppression on fully mechanised heading faces, which provides an important method to improve the working environment and protect coal workers’ health.CITATION:Wang, D and Wang, H, 2015. This paper describes the ventilation analyses performed for the access tunnels at the New Level Mine project (NLMP) at CodelcoÆs El Teniente operation outside of Rancagua, Chile. This new mine is anticipated to reach a final production of between 137 and 180 kt/d. Production from the NLMP is scheduled to start in the year 2017. The main access tunnels (MAT) are approximately 9 km in length, with one for personnel and supply access and the second one for ore extraction through a conveyor system. These two tunnels are a critical component of the initial stage 1 development and will be constructed independently of the existing mine workings. The tunnels were originally designed to be constructed with two tunnel boring machines. However, later analyses changed the construction approach to a conventional drill and blast technique. Because the design included two mid-tunnel ramp-to-surface connections, conventional mining methods would allow for development of the tunnels with multiple working faces to achieve a more rapid schedule. This paper presents the initial baseline considered for the ventilation design and the optimisation methodology applied by Codelco to minimise the airflow and pressure requirements of the ventilation system. For the last 50 years, traditional safety management has improved safety performance by: • Fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard). • Improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc). • Making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). Although these approaches certainly have merit, and may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many modern-day incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

"Ventilation models are invaluable tools for both prediction of routine daily ventilation changesin an operating mine to circuit performance expectations at the mine in 20 yearsÆ time. Arguably ventilation offi cers are becoming increasingly reliant on maintaining an accurate ventilation model with which to do their work. This paper relates to the practical assessment of the accuracy and thus ability of a mine site ventilation model to be reliably utilised on such varied tasks. The author's experience shows that in some cases the incumbent model is found to be in a state of tune that demonstrates a mine wide detailed assessment of branch resistances is simply not required. The money spent on a detailed mine wide ventilation survey that is not required would be far bett er served purchasing much needed monitoring equipment, rather than fixing something that is possibly not even broken. The term ænot rocket scienceÆ has been incorporated into the title of this paper because it appears that many practitioners believe that circuit validation is diffi cult. As long as clear att ention to detail is paid to the actual data collection process then drawing an accuracy comparison between the circuit performance and the model performance at any particular point in time, is really very simple. This paper will show a manner in which a circuit can be analysed to determine its actual state of health by using various diagnostic tools and tips. It will help ensure that subsequent work scopes to address any highlighted model defi ciencies can be more effi ciently scoped and targeted. It will hopefully remind operational people that such self assessments can easily be done æin houseÆ if the appropriate steps are followed."

Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.During the environmental impact assessment and project development phase, Nautilus completed a number of hydrodynamic modelling exercises in order to predict the nature, volume and extent of the plumes likely to be generated by the sea floor mining tools and return water discharge at the sea floor.The modelling was conducted using the suspended sediment fate model (SSFATE), developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and RPS APASA engineering consultants. The SSFATE model was originally developed in order to predict and manage dredging plumes, and has since been adapted for deep ocean sea floor mining. The model uses a Lagrangian approach to remove the limitations of grid resolution, and simulates far-field effects of sedimentation plumes by assuming that the average transport and turbulence associated with currents are dominant over the initial turbulence at the release point. The random walk procedure utilised in the model tracks particle size classes as they disperse and settle, and also takes into consideration any re-suspension that may occur following settlement (RPS APASA, 2014).CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. Over much of Australia, rainfall is highly seasonal and storm-driven. Consequently, operational mines often need extensive earthworks – drains, dams and levees – for protection during the occasional large floods and for water storage against the dry times; however, it has not been appreciated that many of these earthworks will need to function after mining has finished, sometimes, beyond a normal design life for engineered structures.While a mine is operating, standards for design and maintenance are dictated by regulation and risk assessment. For dams and levees – regulated structures – the standards imposed mainly relate to life-of-mine. The levels of risk and maintenance accepted by the mine operator may not be acceptable to another landholder in perpetuity. However, the Environmental Authority cannot be surrendered unless the landholder has accepted responsibility for any unrehabilitated regulated structures (Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP), 2016).In order for a future landholder to be willing to take responsibility for a dam or levee, the structure should be of value to the business of the property. In addition, its management needs must be consistent with that business; for example, it should be maintainable using skills, equipment and materials normally available to the business.CITATION:Henderson, S J, 2016. Bacterial leaching of sulfide minerals are fairly well established in heap, dump and in situ leaching and the primary bacterial treatment of refractory gold concentrate using CSTR have gained industrial prominence in recent years. Three cultures, a mesophile T ferrooxidans (DSM583), a moderate thermophile Sulfobacillus acidophilus (strain YTF1) and a extreme thermophile (Sulfolobus strain BC65) were used for the biooxidation (pre-treatment) of the Porgera gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under optimum O2 and CO2 enriched air (30 per cent O2 and ten per cent CO2) based on volume ratios. The positive effect of using oxygen and carbon dioxide enriched air for the biooxidation of gold-bearing pyrite mineral was clearly demonstrated where an increase in Fe release rate by a factor of 2.8, 1.8 and 1.5 for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively were observed compared with the shake flask tests. The lag phase observed with the other test conditions such as in shake flask or with air decreased by about 80 per cent for all three cultures. The average observed dissolved oxygen concentrations in the pulp for these tests were 8.7, 5.8 and 5.0 mg/L for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively, indicating that O2 was not limiting in these tests. The pulp redox potential was observed to increase with time for all tests coincident with the leaching rate and reaching a maximum of 663 mV, however the maximum value differs for each strain, with DSM583 exhibiting the highest followed by YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Biooxidation of pyrite under optimum gas enrichment at different pulp densities showed near total Iron extraction occurred for pulp densities of three, ten and 20 per cent (w/v). At high pulp densities, more so at 40 per cent than 30 per cent (w/v), the leaching rate decreased rapidly for tests with YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Monitoring of dissolved O2 shows that O2 demand increased with increasing pulp density and the average dissolved O2 concentration observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus at 40 per cent solids concentration was 1.0 mg/L and below, suggesting limiting oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions for these two cultures. The decrease in leaching rate observed at high pulp densities (30 and 40 per cent) under optimum gas enrichment was accompanied by low metal dissolution and low redox potential values which was attributed to shear stress due to attrition of cells by high solids concentration, toxicity of metal ions especially Ag and Fe and the formation of precipitates and jarosites as confirmed from XRD analysis of leach residues hence impeding the leaching process. Limiting conditions due to high pulp density and viscosity were only observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus. The subsequent cyanide leaching for precious metals from the pre-treated pyrite concentrate in all cases shows the extent of gold and silver recovery increased with the degree of pyrite oxidation and Au and Ag recoveries in excess of 80 per cent were achieved compared with only 18.1 per cent and 35.9 per cent for gold and silver respectively when treated by direct cyanide leaching on the original, untreated concentrate.

The geotechnical model is the cornerstone of any mining geotechnical design and as such the confidence level and reliability of the geotechnical model is paramount. The geotechnical model confidence level needs to be commensurate with the level of design that is being applied or study that is being undertaken. The geotechnical model is made up of several components and the reliability of the data underlying these components ultimately determines the reliability of the geotechnical model.Data reliability is linked to the quantity of data collected, the spatial distribution of the data collected, quality of the data collection and the interpretation of the data. In a typical project, there is an opportunity to improve data reliability through the scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility and final design and implementation stages.Currently, very little quantitative guidance exists in the literature on assessing the confidence level of geotechnical studies, although there have been attempts by various authors (Haile, 2004; Haines, Swart and Kruger, 2006; Read and Stacey, 2009; Dunn, Basson and Parrott, 2011) to qualitatively describe what level of geotechnical data is required. Recently a number of authors (Read, 2013; Fillion and Hadjigeorgiou, 2013; Thomas, 2013) have outlined methods that could be applied to assess the reliability of some types of geotechnical data that are used in the development of geotechnical models.This paper briefly discusses some of the factors influencing data reliability and the geotechnical model confidence and some of the tools available.CITATION:Dunn, M J, 2014. The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

In Australia a social impact assessment (SIA) is generally required prior to the approval of a mineral resource extraction or processing projects as a part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. In recent years there has been increased attention on the adequacy of the SIA process applied in major project assessment. Most applications have focused on the impact identification process with little attempt given to the community negotiating power over how impacts will be addressed. The impact assessment tends to occur at a single point in time, with no subsequent re-evaluation or ongoing social impact management and monitoring process. The assessments rarely specify how responsibilities for impacts on communities may be apportioned between project proponents and government, and have been inadequate in dealing with cumulative project impacts. In Queensland, concern about these shortfalls have led to the release of the Sustainable Resource Communities Policy 2008 and requirements for social impact management plans (SIMP) to be developed for each resource development in the State. In this paper a 'pressure-state-response' approach to impact assessment is used to develop an 'impact-response-monitoring-evaluation' (IRME) framework that can be applied to ongoing evaluation and monitoring of social impacts. The framework is applied to coal resource developments in the northern Bowen Basin in Queensland to identify core requirements in a SIMP. The IRME framework is flexible enough to be implemented at various spatial and time scales, for the wellbeing of the local and regional mining and non-mining communities in Australia. The framework can be further examined in other mine developments and could be integrated with the existing mining or environmental protection acts.

There is an increasing trend in the extraction and development of copper resources from complex deposits. The complex deposits pose mineral processing challenges, as they often contain low grade copper ore, relatively large quantity of clay minerals, complex texture, very fine disseminated ore, high amount of pyrite, and high level of impurity elements such as arsenic. With the amount of arsenic in concentrates increasing and with environment, occupational health and safety regulations becoming more restrict, there is a need for a processing method that results in no arsenic emissions and captures all arsenic while immobilizing it in a compound that is stable under a wide range of conditions, so it is suitable for long-term disposal. Some development work has been undertaken to examine the most effective arsenic treatment option for complex orebodies that contain arsenic, but a technically robust and economically viable option has not yet been developed. Previous research has demonstrated the possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from other copper minerals by controlling the potential of the flotation pulp in the single mineral systems. The selective flotation of enargite from copper sulphides in a real complex ore system was studied by Tayebi-Khorami (2016), which is summarised in this paper. CITATION: Tayebi-Khorami, M, 2018. Newstan Mine commenced mining operations in 1887 and has since undertaken extensive mining within the Young Wallsend, Great Northern, Fassifern, Borehole and West Borehole coal seams using a range of mining methods including board and pillar mining and longwall mining.Newstan Mine is planning to extend the existing mine workings using longwall and miniwall mining methods to produce up to 4.5 Mt/a of run-of-mine (ROM) coal for at least 25 years. The planned extension in the Main East and South West sections will involve developing new longwall panels and related mains headings. The new area contains higher specific gas emissions (SGE) than previously experienced at Newstan Mine. To achieve the optimum ventilation requirements for the longwall operation in this new area, a new ventilation shaft was designed to be constructed using the blind boring method in the South West Headings section.This paper presents the shaft design parameters and selection criteria for the construction of the new ventilation shaft, including the construction phase and the holing process to connect the shaft to the underground workings. The relative influences of sinter mineralogy, sintering temperature, solid and pore macro- and microstructure on iron ore sinter physical strength are not yet fully understood. Whilst a range of analysis techniques have been used by researchers to evaluate sinter physical properties and sinter mineralogy, none have been able to directly link sinter mineralogy and physical strength under controlled conditions. CSIRO has developed a unique laboratory method to study the fundamental melting properties of fine iron ores in a laboratory furnace under a controlled temperature and gas atmosphere environment designed to simulate the industrial sintering process. Compacted tablet samples for a 0.41 per cent and a 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series were fired in a tube furnace at various temperatures, cooled, then tumbled using a modified Bond abrasion test apparatus to determine a relative tumble index (TI) at each temperature. Quantitative XRD (QXRD) analysis was then carried out on the tumbled samples and optical image analysis (OIA) was conducted on polished sections of a separately fired compact in each case. The amount of total SFCA was found to decrease with increasing firing temperature for both alumina series with the total amount of SFCA higher in the 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series compared to 0.41 per cent Al2O3 series samples. The increase in the amount of magnetite and hematite with increasing firing temperature was largely at the expense of a decrease in total SFCA. Overall, there was good agreement between the quantitative mineralogy determined from QXRD versus OIA for SFCA, hematite and magnetite. Qualitative analysis of high magnification images of the sinter correlated with both the OIA and QXRD results.

Cannington Mine is an underground silver lead zinc operation located in north-west Queensland which has been in production since 1997. Ore is primarily moved through an underground material handling system comprised of a crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft. The Fowler Shaft was constructed in 1997 using a strip and line method with the intent for it to provide a means to hoist ore from the loading station 600 m below surface. The shaft also serves as the route of key services including high voltage power, mine dewatering and fresh air. Despite the adherence to a mining exclusion zone, large-scale change in geotechnical conditions around the shaft were first observed in 2015. Ongoing ground movement around the shaft lead to cracking and delamination of the concrete liner. Shaft management required the on-site team to measure deformation rates and magnitudes, forecast change, manage rockfall risk and deforming pipework, and ultimately, hoisting skip clearance. Monitoring techniques to observe and measure deformation were required to evolve with the magnitude of movement. Some techniques leveraged off modern technology while some of the most useful techniques were based on logic and first principles. All shaft deformation management strategies relied on the co-operation and alignment between Cannington’s Infrastructure Maintenance, Survey and Geotechnical Departments.

Future developments in the mining sector will be driven by the need to increase safety, ecological sustainability and efficiency. Autonomous systems represent a huge step towards achieving these goals. This paper describes the basic infrastructure of an autonomous system – essentially a network of distributed sensors. Although the sensors are distributed, the overarching communication network with its related middleware offers a transparent and uniform layer. This middleware acts as an abstraction layer which priorities information and provides information to other platforms on request. This permits higher-level autonomous functionality to utilise all information available in the system regardless of where data has been generated or via which physical communication link it has been processed.The Personnel Proximity Detection (PDD) system is described in detail as an example, with details not only of the system itself, but also of the essential full integration and how the abstraction layer allows this technology to be plugged in at any location of the network. The paper ends with a summary of the content and a conclusion.

With the evolution rate of technologies, earthmoving equipment users are establishing vision statements for their operation out to and in some cases beyond 2000. Autonomous systems are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so, as they hold a potential for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost gains. Caterpillar feels that it is important that the infrastructure of on-board systems are understood and can be utilised more in the near term to `grow' a user up to the stage of autonomous operation.

The accurate calculation of ore reserves is one of the most important functions under- taken at a potential or operating mine. In recent years there has been a trend towards recommending more and more complex techniques for the calculation of reserves. However these are not always necessary and many improvements could be made by the use of all potential data and a heavier geological input. An ore reserve should be the result of geological not mathe- matical or engineering reasoning. All ore reserve estimates are wrong and the important thing is to.recognise why they-are wrong and to take action to minimize the errors. Geostatistics and other complex mathematical techniques may appear to answer all our needs for ore reserve accuracy but there are many drawbacks, not least of which is the communi- cation gap which may develop between the operator and both management and production Personnel.

A geotechnical data management system has been developed to manage drillhole and mapping data generated from in house and consultant administered field programs. This system comprises a data collection interface with integrated validation, processing and reporting functionality. Development of the database required careful consideration of how and what geotechnical information is gathered in the field, a clear understanding of the interdependency of the parameters, and the outputs required to support geotechnical design.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System was selected as the preferred software to support the process because of its ability to easily manage data from capture in the field through to quality reviews and ultimately into reports. Initially only geotechnical logging of diamond core was considered, subsequently the system has been expanded to support additional geotechnical data sources such as laboratory test results, traverse and window mapping data. This paper focuses on the core logging data acquisition, validation, analysis and presentation of data.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System has proven to be a robust platform for the capture, interrogation, and reporting of geotechnical data. Data entry objects have been created to manage seven different areas of geotechnical data collection ranging from core logging to mapping to automated reports for falls of ground.
