The relative importance of magmatic and metamorphic fluids in Archaean gold mineralisation has long been a subject of debate. Computer simulations can be used to explore the interaction between competing fluid flow drivers, thus providing insight into their role in mineralisation. This approach has been applied to Archaean gold mineralisation in the Yilgarn craton, Western Australia. A simple model representing regional metamorphism in a granite-greenstone terrane indicates that fluid produced during a regional metamorphic event in the Yilgarn was unlikely to have been involved in mineralisation, because it would have escaped from the crust long before the main gold event. Another model illustrates the competition between magmatic fluid production, convection, and deformation. The model shows that the timing of deformation relative to fluid production is important in determining the fate of magmatic and metamorphic fluids, and hence their potential to play a role in mineralisation. The utilisation of fossil fuels, including coal (of which Australia is a large producer and exporter) is a significant contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases. Methane gas, formed during the coalification process, is present in coal seams to varying levels depending on the rank and depth of the deposit. This gas usually escapes to the atmosphere during mining operations without prior conversion to C02 or utilisation as fuel. The quantity of methane released can represent from less than one percent to more than five percent of the carbon content of the coal mined. Per unit of carbon, methane has a greenhouse impact many times that of C02. The emission of uncombusted methane to the atmosphere can therefore represent a greenhouse impact of similar porportions to that of the CO2 formed by combusting the mined coal. However, greenhouse emissions from coal can be minimised by collecting the coal seam methane and converting it to water vapour and the less damaging form, CO2. If such conversion is carried out while performing useful work, the methane can further reduce greenhouse emissions by displacing other fossil fuels. Technology has been developed to allow coal seam methane gas to be economically collected in a pure form, uncontaminated with air. This pure methane can be used to supplement natural gas supplies, to generate power or for the production of chemicals or substitute transport fuels. By collecting and utilising coal seam methane, the greenhouse impact from the mining and use of coal can be minimised, with significant reductions possible in the case of gassy deposits.

Slags are the most voluminous solid by-products generated in pyrometallurgical operations, and, as such, finding an application for these oxidic materials is pertinent to maintaining resource efficiency. In particular, pyrometallurgical copper production is associated with high slag rates, typically ranging from 2.2 to 3.0 tons of slag per ton produced copper, which necessitates slag valourisation. A possible application for these iron silicate slags is as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), which effectively lowers the CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious material. Although utilising iron silicate slags as SCMs has been studied in previous work, the scientific literature has limited data on the effect of composition on the inherent reactivity in cementitious systems. More specifically, no reports on the impact of FeO/SiO2 ratio have been presented in previous publications. Therefore, the present study aimed to isolate this parameter in a synthetic FeO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-Cr2O3 system. Since the amorphous content is a pertinent parameter for SCMs, a high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) was utilised to assess the crystallisation behaviour at continuous cooling conditions. Furthermore, high-temperature rheological experiments were conducted to measure the viscosities of the slags in relation to the crystallisation behaviour. The experiments showed that depolymerising the slag by increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio generated a less viscous slag, which showed higher tendencies for crystallisation. Furthermore, experiments assessing the inherent reactivity as an SCM showed that depolymerising the slag by increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio as the sole independent parameter generated an initially more reactive slag. However, replacing SiO2 with FeO was found to negatively affect the reactivity as measured over seven days within the tested compositional range.

Magnetite has been used in coal processing for many years and it is likely that its use will continue well into the twenty first Century. While magnetite is only a minor cost component in coal processing, the use of processed magnetite in dense medium separation is essential to provide the split of quality coal products which the markets of today demand. The occurrence of magnetite in Australia is relatively abundant, but a combination of its iron content, magnetic properties, quality and proximity to the coal processing plants is essential to provide a low cost product for use in the Coal Industry. The demand for more splitting of coal in coal processing may require more grades of magnetite, particularly as a finer grade lower specific gravity medium to separate the finer quality low ash coals.

The crystallisation behaviour of low melting point CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions greatly affect the deformability of inclusions during the rolling process. The crystallisation characteristics of CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-MgO melts representing the oxide inclusions in Si-Mn killed steel were systematically investigated. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallisation change were analysed under a fixed CaO/SiO2 in the complex inclusions. The continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) experiments were conducted. The results showed that the increase of MgO content increases the crystallisation ability of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions, while the increase of Al2O3 content has the opposite effect. The viscosity, liquidus temperature of oxide melt and also the initial crystallisation potential might be the reasons for the change in crystallisation behaviour. Also, the crystallisation activation energy could semi-quantitatively characterise the crystal growth during the crystallisation of inclusions. To obtain low melting point plasticized CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO (CaO/SiO2=1) system inclusions, the Al2O3 content of the system needs to be controlled larger than 15 wt per cent and the MgO content should be kept at a small amount.

The Ok Tedi open pit mine will have final wall heights in excess of 750m. The behaviour of these excavated slopes will be influenced by the presence of numerous defects. This paper discusses the identification of possible failure mechanisms within the pit walls based on mapped fault and joint data. Results from analyses using these data have formed the basis for the ultimate pit design.

Considerable quantities of dissolved nickel are lost in the waste liquors from the QNPL nickel treatment plant. Cementation, precipitation and ion exchange techniques were investigated to reduce this loss. Ion exchange was the most successful of the procedures studied and a process for recovering nickel from stripped ammoniacal process liquors was developed in the laboratory and scaled up to plant flow volumes. The system developed uses a carboxylic ion exchange resin operated in a completely ammoniacal cycle. The regenerant is itself regenerable using existing plant, thus the only loss is the stoichiometric value of NH4+ required to displace the exchanged cations from the resin. Existing plant sand/anthracite filter beds have been adapted for use as resin columns containing 3 cubic metres of resin capable of treating effluent at a flow rate of 6000 litres/min.

The detailed work done by Stillwell and Edwards on the occurrence of cobaltite and safilorite-Iollingite at the South Mine, followed by its presentation as a paper to the Institute, calls for, a few notes on its occurrence elsewhere in the Broken Hill field. No massive cobaltite similar to that in the South Mine veinlet is known except from the Consols Mine (as mentioned in the paper). Fine grained cobaltite has, however, been found in low-grade ore from the North Mine. Microscopic grains occur in a mineralized green feldspar pegmatite. The feldspar has been replaced in part by graphite, and the cobaltite occurs in association with the graphite. In its hardness, pinkish-white colour, and resistance to the standard etchingqeagents it is similar to the South Mine cobaltite; it is etched by acid permanganate solution. An interesting feature of this occurrence is the way in- which some of the minerals (notably galena) have forced apart the graphite lamellae in crystallizing, forming lenses enclosed by the curved cleavage surlaces 0;[ the graphite.StillwelI and Edwards cite a note by G. Smitht for the statement that "cobaltite has been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols Lode in the vicinity of the rich silver deposits, though not in contact with them."Smith, however, is here referring to the oxidized zone. Elsewhere in the same article he states "... a deposit of cobaltite in a very much altered condition was found. This was impregnated with silver, and assayed as high as 3,000 ounces," Of the cobaltite in the unoxidized zone, Smith simply states that it became rarer with depth.Cobaltite has also been recognized by Mr. H. F. Whitworth, M.SC., Curator of the Mining Museum, Sydney, in specimens from Burt's Copper Mine eight miles south of Broken Hill.

Most orebodies have cross-sections of less than 1 km2 and hence do not offer a particularly large target for exploration. Fortunately, although in the geological record ore deposits are small and rare and result from the exceptional coincidence of certain geological processes, these processes are mappable on a much larger, district to regional scale and constitute a mineral system in which the ore deposit is the central feature. A mineral system can therefore be defined as `all geological factors that control the generation and preservation of mineral deposits, and stress the processes that are involved in mobilising ore components from a source, transporting and accumulating them in more concentrated fonn and then preserving them throughout the subsequent geological history'. The mineral system concept emphasises that for many ore deposit types, although economically viable mineralisation may only occur on a scale of say, hundreds of metres, the total system of fluid-rock interactions that led to ore formation can extend over a distance of tens to hundreds of kilometres around the deposit. When mapped out, the total mineral system provides a far larger exploration target than the actual ore deposit itself. Important geological factors defining the characteristics of any mineralising system include: 1. sources of the mineralising fluids and transporting ligands; 2. sources of the metals and other ore components; 3. migration pathway; 4. thermal gradient; 5. energy source; 6. a mechanical and structural focusing mechanism at the trap site; 7. chemical and/or physical traps for ore precipitation. Many of these factors individually are common throughout time and space and are mappable on a regional scale. The delineation and empirical prediction of mineral systems can thus be approached by combining two components of metallogenic research. Firstly, the development of maps of regional geoscientific data and data sets of the distribution of factors significant for mineral systems in general. Secondly, the determination of the essential ingredients of particular styles or types of deposits in terms of mappable elements that any exploration program could focus on.

The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. A commercial enargite concentrate was mechanically milled in inert and oxidising atmospheres for 10 hours. No substantial effect was observed in either an inert atmosphere or in air other than a broadening and weakening of the diffraction peaks. Milling dry in oxygen or wet in air was dramatic with a significant reaction occurring which formed arsenolite, As2O3 and CuSO4.5H2O, both of which are readily soluble.A small amount of SO2 was also formed. Dissolution in acid left CuS as the major phase implying incomplete oxidation. The small fraction of tennantite in the sample was comparatively resistant to oxidation.

Sedimentary rock is a lithology that is commonly encountered in mining practices. Their properties, especially the resistance against weathering, are often of critical importance to long-term engineering stability due to their ubiquitous existence on the earth’s crust. The weathering of rocks is a complex process that involves physical degradation, chemical and biological erosions. In this study, the impact of physical weathering on four common sedimentary rocks, namely sandstone, siltstone, limestone and shale, are simulated in the laboratoryoratory environment taking into consideration the impact of preservation condition, temperature and time. In order to optimise the design of the experiment, Taguchi’s design of experiment method is implemented based on the L16 orthogonal array and selected simulation conditions. The weight and dimension variation, fracture intensity, slake durability, and uniaxial strengths of specimens are then tested to quantify the impact of weathering under various conditions. The results indicate that weathering significantly influences the strength of shale, siltstone and limestone but not sandstone. The impact of weathering on dimension variation is insignificant. For soft rocks, most physical weathering took place after second cycle of simulation, resulting in strength reduction up to 100 per cent (disintegration) but generally in a range from 28 per cent to 32 per cent. Additionally, time is the most important factor contributing to the physical weathering of weak rocks, followed by residual, preservation conditions and temperature. Last but not least, some shales, depending on the content of clay minerals, tend to develop significant fracturing or even disintegrate under the influence of weathering.

When a highly anisotropic or weak rock mass is subjected to high-stress conditions, it can lead to large ongoing deformations or squeezing ground conditions. Squeezing ground conditions can impose increased support costs, delays associated with rehabilitation, and disruption to production schedules. Ultimately, in more severe cases, it may result in complete drive closure. Several recent case studies investigated the squeezing mechanism and measures to control squeezing ground in underground mines and also to design appropriate ground support systems. Effective management of squeezing ground conditions requires a sound understanding of the failure mechanism and the driving forces. Once the failure mechanism is understood, the appropriate ground support system should be tailored to specifically manage the critical driving forces that control the squeezing mechanism. Support type, support stiffness, reinforcement length, support density, installation times and mining sequence all have important impact on the effectiveness of the support system. This paper provides a case study at the Ballarat Gold Mine in Australia, where drive squeezing was associated with foliated ground conditions located below 700 m depth. Numerical modelling was used to better understand the failure mechanism and the driving forces that lead to squeezing conditions. The effectiveness of various support types was compared to installed ground support performance. A critical step in open cut coal mining is clean removal of the overburden. This is usually achieved by drilling, blasting and digging. A key part of this process being successful is to stop drilling at the correct blast ‘stand-off distance’. The stand-off distance is the distance between the base of the drilled blasthole and the top of the coal horizon to be mined. Having this correct provides a protective cap of rock above the coal horizon so that the blast will fracture all the overburden without damaging the coal horizon or mixing it with the overburden. Drilling beyond the correct stand-off distance causes the blast to continue into the coal horizon, damaging it and mixing it with the overburden, leading to significant losses of coal product. Conversely, drilling short of the correct stand-off distance results in additional work to remove the intact overburden.

The dilution of blasted ore with cemented backfill materials has been recognised as a significant factor influencing the economics of some underground metalliferous mining operations. Several mechanisms have heen identified as possible causes of fill failures. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of damage as the result of one mechanism, that of production blasting adjacent to bodies of cemented hydraulic fill (CHF). A vibration amplitude transfer function has been developed to model the transmission of blast vibrations from the source, through ore, across the ore to CHF interface and into the CHF mass. The model may be applied in the near field. The model has permitted estimation of vibration amplitude at a point in a CHF mass, to which damage criteria may be applied. A number of assumptions and simplifications have been made to render the problem relatively tractable. Ore and CHF material characteristics recorded by a number of authors were utilised to formulate preliminary damage estimations. A simple application of the amplitude transfer model indicated that a zone of plastically deformed CHF would be produced, and would extend to a distance of approximately 0.5 metres from the interface into the CHF. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, that indicated that the zone of plastic deformation would be more extensive given appropriate conditions. Recommendations for further model development and future laboratory and field investigations have been made.

A reciprocating plate column is described in which two sets of perforated plates are mounted alternately on two shafts and are reciprocated with a phase difference of 1800 between them. It is shown that such a column is mechanically superior to the previously proposed types: under practical operating conditions the pressure fluctuations at the base of the column are only a small fraction of the static head. Furthermore, mass transfer experiments with the system tributyl phosphate in kerosene- acid aqueous solutions of uranyl nitrate show that both high specific throughputs and reason- ably good efficiencies can be attained in this type of column. A comparison with the more conventional extraction equipment (mixer -settlers, pulsed columns) on the basis of residence time per equilibrium stage indicates the potential of reciprocating plate columns in hydrometallurg- ical application, especially in which the requirements of separation efficiency are modest while the scale of operation is large.

Particles finer than 10 um often cause problems in flotation. The current under- standing of the nature of the following effects is discussed: slime coatings on particles, carrier flotation, increased froth stability, entrainment of ultrafine gangue, excess reagent consumption, slower rate of flotation, more reactive surfaces. The review emphasizes the principles underlying these effects rather than details of progress in practical solutions to the problems they cause. The princi- ples of selective flocculation and floc flotation and the various approaches to achieving selectivity are discussed. Hydrodynamic effects on floc growth are reviewed. The evidence suggests that satisfactory performance in the ultrafines fraction will be achieved only by simul- taneously increasing the rate of flotation of the ultrafine valuable mineral and de- creasing the rate of entrainment of ultra- fine gangue.

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process.
