The Henderson Mine has been utilising a continuous panel caving method to extract molybdenum ore since starting operation in 1976. In the past three decades since the mine was designed, many changes have taken place in underground technology as well as the general nature of the mining business. The impacts of larger scale underground equipment and automation are significant at Henderson and continue to reshape the nature of the enterprise. During the first years of operation in the 1970s, Henderson required almost 2000 employees to achieve full production, today only about 400 people are required to fully utilise the plantÆs capacity. The most recent change to the facility is the conversion from a rail haulage system to an underground crushing and conveying system that transports ore 25 km to the Henderson mill site. This change has required the introduction of large, rubber tired haulage trucks underground and the mining methods necessary to develop the large openings demanded by the trucks and underground crusher. The development of the underground crusher is also the first step to mining the final bottom horizon of the orebody. Along with this move comes an opportunity to almost triple the effectiveness of the mining effort, through higher draw columns and wider draw bell spacing. This final advancement to a totally trackless mine has positioned Henderson well for safe and efficient operation as it enters the 21st century.

Since 2005 BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been working with the consulting company Runge to implement the software XPAC Advanced Destination Scheduler (ADS) in life-of-mine studies. The Mt Whaleback mine, being the single biggest open cut iron ore mine in the world, presents some special challenges in scheduling. The biggest challenge has been the slow run time and difficulty in targeting all ore and waste requirements. The high waste to ore strip ratio means that much of the cost of mining is tied up in waste dumping. It is therefore very important to schedule waste efficiently. At Mt Whaleback there is an additional challenge of managing two types of waste: inert and environmentally sensitive pyritic material. This paper shows how the XPAC destination scheduler is configured to achieve efficient and repeatable waste scheduling results at the Mt Whaleback mine. It also discusses proposed improvements to the process. The overall ore and waste schedule is configured to target mining parameters, crusher feed and grades. The schedule is run in two stages. The first stage is ore mining. The waste that needs to be mined is locked in a sequence. The second stage is the waste scheduling. The waste destination scheduler uses three inputs: source waste parcels locked in a sequence, a haul road and a waste dump block model. The process involves setting some rules for dump progression and haul path selection. These can be validated. The schedule is then run to target the shortest travel time. The results of scheduling are graphical and numeric and can be transferred into many different formats for reporting. The graphical result shows face positions in time that can be used for detailed dump design. The numeric results are used to estimate truck fleet size, fuel consumption, labour and equipment financials. The process has been successful in reducing the project time line, increasing the ability to do more scenarios and increasing schedule accuracy, transferability and repeatability.

Some developments in copper, lead and zinc extractive metallurgy which have gone in to production or seem to be close to production scale are described with emphasis on why these innovations have been adopted.Mineral processing operations are now using: automated quantitative mineralogy,high capacity fine crushing equipment, ò fine grinding equipment, andcolumn cell flotation.Extractive metallurgy plants are using:ò bath smelting of concentrate at various scales, and ò flash converting of copper.Hydrometallurgical process developments are slower to make a commercial impact. Concerns about ability to handle impurities in the feed and production of saleable by-products are often major hurdles.An expression for the probability of implementing the first example of a new development is presented.

The stratigraphic sequence west of Mount Isa contains the Judenan Beds, Eastern Creek Volcanics, and May Downs gneiss. It is an incomplete sequence as major north-south faults divide the area into four separatezones containing portions of these different units. The first three zones, which occur directly to the west of the Mount Isa Fault, consist of quartzites and quartz-mica schists which are uncorrelatable between zones but have been grouped together as the Judenan Beds. The most western zone contains an incomplete section of Eastern Creek Volcanics which rests conformably on a unit believed to be equivalent to the Mount Guide Quartzite; this is again underlain by the May Downs gneiss. A detailed description of the rock types is presented, but only a broad stratigraphic correlation is possible with the very much thicker sequence to the east of Mount Isa.The age of sedimentation is believed to be Lower Proterozoic and it may not occur in the type of geosynclinal basin envisaged by previous authors.This sequence is intruded by many small basic intrusions and also the Sybella Granite with its associated microgranite and pegmatites. The Sybella Granite consists of both a massive and a foliated phase; the latteris generally restricted to the margin of the main granite mass.Four regional metamorphic zones have been identified on the basis of their pelitic mineral assemblages; these are a chlorite, biotite, biotite-cordierite, and a sillimanite zone; separating each are prominent north-south faults.This metamorphism is a regional metamorphism which accompanies the first generation folding of the area and is not associated with the emplacement of the Sybella Granite. A very localized retrogressive metamorphism is also found in some areas of second generation folding.

The first difficulty encount.ered in preparing this paper was to find a definition of the word "special" as applied to steel. The first thought is "obviously any grade not mild steel" but this is an over-simplification, because the term "mild steel" covers a series of carbon ranges, each found from experience to be especially suited to the production of a particular rolled section.Even if the Australian structural mild steels are excluded it is found that no part of the plant here is independent of special steel.The face-man on Iron Monarch makes his bench safe by barring down with a 0.6% carbon steel bar. He bores a hole into the ironstone with a 0.75-0.8% carbon steel drill, driven by a jackhammer which is built of a variety of special steels. After it is shot down, the stone is lifted by an electric shovel, very few of whose steel components fall into the general category of structural grades of mild steel.Further special steels are met with in the truck into which the stone is loaded, the hauling electric locomotive, and the rails on which these .run. Even the permanent way uses more than one grade, e.g., the crossings experiencing heavy service have their frogs built with austenitic manganese steel inserts.Special steels play their part in the overhead crane which tips these trucks, and in the crushers into which they discharge, and so they can be followed right through the production line, and they are still there at the seaward end of the ship loading boom at the head of the WhyalIa ore jetty.

The Western Australian School of Mines is continuing to investigate the blasting techniques and mining strategies that are used for ore/waste separation (or high grade/low grade ore separation) or to prevent ore and waste mixing. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and undergoes no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully recovered at the minimum overall operating cost. The current study includes the use of computerised Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) technology to assist the user with the blast technique selection and blast design process. These aspects are highly dependent on the geology. (geometry, rock mass properties, grade distribution), explosive performance and the expectations of the mining company in terms of production rates and equipment utilisation. Most of these factors are not well defined and nor are they easy to quantify. However, a large amount of knowledge does exist and is available in the following forms: rules of thumb, empirical formulae, engineering judgement and past experience. KBS techniques are well adapted to handle such"forms of knowledge. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate an approach for the use of Knowledge Based Systems during the analysis and interpretation stages of the blast design process. In particular, the components and methodology of the developed system are described for selective open pit gold mining. The Knowledge Based System developed was written using the declarative programming language PROLOG.

The purpose of filtration in a gold reco- very plant is to separate the gold bearing liquid from the solids in the slurry. Some of the gold is inevitably lost due to incomplete separation. An investigation recently completed by the authors has brought to light a method of reducing such losses. In this investigation, the filtration pro- cess was represented by a steady-state mathema- tical model which took account of 14 indepen- dent variables and three parameters. One of the filters in the plant at West Driefontein Gold Mine in South Africa was isolated from the rest and fully instrumented. A computerized data acquisition system was installed close to the filter, and the data obtained from it served to test the model. Using the model together with an optimizing program, the optimum operating point for the filter as a function of throughput was found, and a control strategy developed to minimize the total gold losses in the filter plant.

The underwriting of professional negligence has proved to be an evolving science. As with most insurance products coverage offered in the past was very broad but as legal precedent demonstrated to Insurers areas of unforeseen exposure policy documents per se have become more restrictive until today the insurance market through attrition have produced a basic policy structure with various purchasable extensions which together provide insuring professionals with coverage that has proved to be adequate for their needs. The basic policy provides indemnity and protection for fortuitous negligence. In a practical sense, however, professional indemnity policies are really a defence document in so far as policy holders are relying upon the expertise of Insurers to protect them in the event that a claim is made upon them. Whether damages are awarded is in many respects a secondary consideration, the most important factor is to ensure that policy holders are protected in terms of the legal defence mechanism. By way of illustration we are currently in the process of defending a large professional firm which purchased from us a policy with a limit of indemnity of $10M. The case has been running in a Supreme Court now for 14 months and the defence costs which we have incurred on their behalf are rising close to $8M as I put pen to paper. Defence costs of that magnitude would in effect terminally cripple all but the very largest professional operations in Australia. In more recent times coverage has been provided in Australia for breaches of the Trade Practices Act and similar legislation enacted in various States. No-one really appreciated the comprehensive impact which the Trade Practices Act would have on commerce in Australia. Most professionals thought that indeed they would be exempt from prosecution under this Act. The passage of time has clearly indicated that this is not the case and we have found that it is much more difficult to defend a claim involving breaches of the Trade Practices Act than it would be to defend a claim for breach of tortuous liability.

Current models for the origin of banded iron-formation (BIF) derived in situ iron ore deposits assume that the typical chert and iron oxide banded BIF is the primary rock from which enriched iron ore deposits arise by the selective leaching of quartz and the residual accumulation of the iron oxides. Weathering extends to the base of all the hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province, which lie within the saprolitic weathering zone, as shown by the preservation of the primary textures, and are overlain by a hydrated goethite zone representing the solum. Since groundwater typically contains dissolved silica, derived from the hydrolysis of silicate minerals, greatly in excess of the saturation solubility of quartz, it is incapable of removing quartz from below the watertable, and quartz is preserved in all saprolites derived from quartz bearing rocks. Quartz may be dissolved in the solum due to the influx of meteoric water having little or no dissolved silica, but soil-forming processes that dissolve quartz likewise alter the oxides by hydration and transposition with consequent destruction of primary textures, and there is no suggestion of soil-forming processes having produced the deposits, which typically extend to considerable depths below the water-table. A characteristic feature of the typical hematite orebodies is the unaltered nature of the iron oxides in the ore compared to those in the adjacent cherty BIF. Although the solubility of ferric iron at >10 ppb is much less than quartz, any process capable of dissolving the huge volume of quartz must also affect the iron oxides, but evidence of this is completely lacking in most ore deposits. Hydrothermal alteration at Koolyanobbing in the Southern Cross Province affects both cherty BIF and ore, and clearly shows equal mobilisation and recrystallisation of hematite within quartz/hematite veins and in the surrounding cherty BIF, which shows no evidence for the selective leaching of quartz. Similarly, any metamorphic process capable of removing all quartz from BIF would leave characteristic evidence in the remaining oxides. However, a hydrothermal process may account for at least portions of certain ore deposits, in which the chert bands have been replaced by carbonates at comparatively low temperatures, to produce a quartz-free magnetite/ carbonate rock that is readily upgraded to high-grade ore by supergene dissolution of the carbonates. This process is interpreted to have formed high grade ore at Mt Gibson, Koolyanobbing æAÆ Deposit and Mt Tom Price North Deposit. In addition to carbonate replaced cherty BIF at Mt Gibson in the Murchison Province, there are extensive sequences of magnetite BIF without chert bands, and this chert-free facies of BIF is interpreted as the precursor to the majority of in situ hematite ore deposits, through oxidation and weathering of magnetite and iron silicate and carbonate minerals. The world-class martite/microplaty-hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province are a special case of BIF-derived iron ore deposits that were initiated during the Proterozoic era. Evidence from overlying Wyloo Group conglomeratic horizons containing clasts of Hamersley Group BIF indicates that microplaty-hematite formed within the clasts before deposition, and that Proterozoic subaerial oxidation and weathering of uplifted Hamersley Group formations produced the microplaty-hematite in both chert-free and cherty BIF.

The capacity of chlorine based solutions to rapidly and effectively dissolve coarse gold in oxide ores is well established. The inherent advantages of chlorine are high dissolution rates (10 - 100 times those of cyanide), and low cost. The high dissolution rates mean that coarse or poorly liberated gold may be dissolved over relatively short periods and hence ore particle size may cease to be such a critical factor. The cost of size reduction to allow adequate gold liberation in order to achieve an adequate gold recovery is less of a consideration when using chlorine than in traditional plant or heap leaching cyanide-based treatment systems.Because chlorine based solutions capable of dissolving gold evolve an unpleasant vapour phase with the potential for significant chlorine losses into the atmosphere, traditional heap leaching with active solutions being sprayed onto prepared heaps is not possible. The ore must be covered and the solution may be introduced beneath that cover through prepared injection `wells' and recovered through production 'wells'. The pit is flooded with active solution beneath an overburden or cover with the solution migrating from the injection 'wells' to the production 'wells' over a period of around five - ten days.

The selection of the ore haulage system is one of the most crucial decisions made in the development of an underground mining project. The haulage system is, once selected, one of the components of a mine that defines its ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and the market conditions for its products. Over the last decade, in Australia at least, this selection process has largely centred on the debate over the merits of shaft and decline truck haulage. Little attention, if any, was given to the application of inclined conveyor haulage as a real alternative to the shaft and truck haulage. This is despite well established precedents for its application in the underground coal industry and some limited applications in underground metalliferous mines. This paper seeks to explore the case for the application of inclined conveyors as a legitimate ore haulage system for underground mines. The case for conveyor haulage is illustrated by an overview of the application of conveyors at some existing operations, and discussion of what conveyors have to offer as a mine haulage system and the issues that are associated with them. Material drawn from the feasibility studies for NewcrestÆs Ridgeway mine and Telfer Deeps Project is presented as case studies that considered selection of inclined conveyor haulage. The purpose of these case studies is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust plan. This plan should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the right solution for an ore haulage system.

The detection and control of gas levels in mining is a continuing challenge for the industry. Standard detectors have many problems that could be overcome with laser based spectroscopic instruments, but to date these systems have not been suitable for mining conditions. This paper reports the development of a new digital data extraction scheme to modernise traditional cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS). CRDS is a direct cavity enhanced laser based absorption technique, which is used to allow the identification of an unknown substance by their molecular fingerprint; this unknown substance is identified by analysing the ring downtime of the light exiting the optical cavity. Traditional CRDS has many issues when analysing substances in hostile environments, or when multiple species may be present. This presents an alternative approach, called real-time CRDS (rtCRDS) that has the potential to overcome many of these issues and produces systems that could be used in the mining industry. The system utilises newly developed widely tuning quantum cascade lasers combined with improved optical cavities and novel digital data extraction to produce spectra over a 1500 nm range in a few seconds. The ring downtime measurements produced are accurate and have high sensitivity and maximum signal to noise ratio. This paper discusses the technique, illustrating the advantages compared to traditional systems and show real-time spectra for a set of molecules of interest to the mining industry. This paper also provided an analogy between this approach and that used in digital communications systems, and shows that this scheme is ideally suited to provide a network of sensors in hostile environments.CITATION:Harb, C C and Chalmers, D, 2015. In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. A critical issue associated with mining operations has been the stability of tailings impoundments. Some breach events have produced catastrophic tailings flows that have caused significant economic damage, mass casualties and long-lasting environmental impact in the downstream environment. This paper reports independently estimated values of runout distance, inundation area and fahrboschung of 16 tailings flows. The adopted methodology involves the geospatial analysis of satellite and aerial imagery to classify each tailings flow into a primary impact zone (Zone 1: main overland flow) and a secondary impact zone (Zone 2: along-creek diluted flow) to characterise runout. Only Zone 1 runout values are reported herein given the greater significance in relation to downstream impact. The fahrboschung is calculated using elevation data from global 30 m digital elevation models (DEMs) and source literature. The results show that all the selected tailings flows travelled long distances (2.4 km to 98.5 km) and inundated large areas (0.35 km2 to 27.0 km2) over very low fahrboschung values (0.04° to 4.8°). This indicates very high flow mobility that is largely governed by the high water content sourced from interstitial waters and, in many cases, supernatant ponds. Scatter plots display poor correlations owing to the complexity and variability in travel path characteristics (confinement, slope angle and obstructions) and the inherent properties of the flowing mass. The slope angle of the travel path exerts a strong control over the flow velocity which has implications on kinetic energy and downstream geomorphological impact. Mean tailings flow velocities may range from ~6 m/s on near-flat, open terrain to over 30 m/s in relatively steeper, channelised travel paths, indicating that tailings flows fall within the extremely rapid and high mobility spectrum of global mass movements. The presented work forms an inceptive part of the CanBreach tailings project, a major component of which is to develop a comprehensive database of case histories to examine the role of geotechnics, failure modes and downstream terrains in influencing tailings flow behaviour.

Zinc-Lead-Silver (Zn-Pb-Ag) mineralisation at the George Fisher Mine occurs in multiple structurally-disrupted stratiform orebodies hosted within a mid-Proterozoic sequence of calcareous siltstones and variably pyritic shales (e.g. Valenta, 1994; Chapman, 2004). The geological model for the mine has been constructed based on a large number of stratigraphic domains which have been defined using recognised patterns of the constituent rocktypes, aided by recognition and mapping of K-rich tuff marker beds (TMBs). The continuity of these domains has been affected by the presence of several sets of faults which are extensional in the plane of stratigraphy, leading to the common occurrence of fault-related stratigraphic gaps in drillholes. Recent improvements to the detail of the geological model have led to significant improvements in the head grade of ore at George Fisher, with relatively small loss of metal. Recognition and accurate logging of these domains requires a high level of knowledge and expertise amongst mine geologists. In order to aid this process, the George Fisher mine installed a Minalyzer CS (core scanner) on site, with the aim of using high resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) geochemical data and core photography to increase the speed, accuracy and consistency of the site geological logging system. This contribution describes some preliminary results from a research project aimed at using the Minalyzer CS XRF data to perform high-resolution rocktype identification and domain boundary mapping in drillcore at George Fisher. Characterisation of platinum-group element (PGE) deposits and their process products has many challenges for the process or applied mineralogist. It is now well established that the PGE distribution for such samples is variably divided between submicroscopic concentrations of PGE in sulfides, tellurides and related minerals occurring as discrete platinum-group minerals (PGM), of which there are a large number of species, many with partial replacement between the PGE and between anions. Each PGE deposit type requires a targeted approach but fundamentally, there are two general methodologies in vogue. One way is to make a large number of polished or polished thin sections for detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/optical examination to determine the PGM distribution and their associations and grain sizes. The other is to make concentrates of representative crushed or processed samples, thus having fewer subsamples to examine. Our method of choice is to use hydroseparation (HS) for concentration. HS provides representative concentrates of sizes down to ~10 ¦m, not possible by other techniques. Various microbeam methods have been used for analysis of trace quantities of PGE (EPMA, micro-PIXE, SIMS and LAM-ICPMS). We prefer LAM-ICPMS (laser ablation microprobe û inductively coupled mass spectrometry) because of the relatively large analytical volume sampled, the ability to measure all the PGE, monitor up to 20 elements, together with detection levels in the tens to a few hundreds of ppb. We provide typical results derived in studies of stratiform PGE ores and tailings, and a massive Ni-Cu sulfide ore.

Yampi Sound is a small channel in the Buccaneer Archapelago (latitude 16° 10' S.; longitude 123° 40' E.), on the northern coast of Western Australia (Fig. 1), about 90 miles north of Derby, and 200 miles north-east of Broome.The iron ore deposits of Yampi Sound occur on an approximately S.E.-N.W. trending belt of islands which form the northern boundary of the Sound (Fig. 2). From east to west they are Koolan Island, Tarrant Island, Usborne Island, Cockatoo Island, Irvine Island, Kathleen Island, Flora Island, and Bathurst Island. Pacific Hydro, a leading renewable energy company from Australia, is developing a series of cascading run-of-river hydro electricity projects in the Cachapoal Valley at the base of the Andes Mountains some 100 km south of Santiago in Chile.These projects involve extensive tunnelling and underground works. The first of these projects is called Chacayes (110 MW installed capacity) and is now under construction with Astaldi SpA of Italy and Fe Grande of Chile as the EPC contractor. Astaldi SpA also has an equity stake in the project. It involves 6 km of tunnels between 5 m and 7 m diameter, of which 2.3 km is by tunnel boring machine (TBM) (5 m diameter).This paper outlines the local and regional geology, the scope of the Chacayes project, actual tunnel excavation rates and support, and compares the decision making on Chacayes between a choice of traditional drill and blast excavation versus TBM.The paper also outlines the next project planned to be developed by Pacifi c Hydro in the valley – the 140+MW Nido de Aguila project involving a main tunnel drive of 11 km with two intermediate adits, plus a 388 m shaft and underground powerhouse. The main tunnel drives are likely to be excavated by two hard rock TBMs (5 m diameter) but will need to be able to withstand high overburden pressures of up to 1300 m.Subsequent projects in the planning stages include the downstream Coya II project with two tunnels totalling approximately 10 km, one of which may be by TBM.

The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.
