The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. M. Co. was supplied with a compressor by Messrs. Thompson and Co., of Castlemaine, and with the object of testing its actual performance.

The accuracy with which block estimates are perceived is obtained by calculation of the kriging variance. This is dependent upon the model chosen for the semi-variogram of the deposit. For an extensive series of spherical semi-variograms the changes in the kriging variance resulting from various degrees of misassignment of the relative nugget effect are investigated. The results are reported as contour maps of percentage change in kriging variance as a function of the range and relative nugget effect of the true model.

We operate a 50 cubic metre per hour mobile alluvial tin mine on small scattered deposits in the Irvinebank area. Wash is loaded by a Cat. 950 front end loader into the bin of a screening section and screen undersize is pumped to a separate jig unit. Both units are rubber tyre mounted and are shifted once a month when the haul distance gets to about 150 metres. The shift takes about 8 hours.The screening section is sited close to the face with a ramp for dumping in and a one metre drop for the screen oversize which is removed by the loader.A reciprocating plate feeder with variable rate hydraulic drive, feeds wash onto a horizontal 1.2 metre x 2.2 metre two deck Kinergy screen. Minus 10 millimetre undersize is pumped by a Warman 6/4 sand pump with a 37 kW variable speed Reeves Motordrive to the jig unit.The jigs are placed 20 to 70 metres away so that tailings will run back into previously mined ground. Reject stone is used to impound the sand and mud, allowing the water to filter through and return to the feed water pump.An MTE trapezoidal module is used as a primary jig. Hutch product is pumped to an eight cell clean-up jig which we developed ourselves along MTE lines. It has a trapezoidal shape and sawtooth stroke provided by cams. Clean tin is taken from the first four spigots. These consist of clear plastic tubes fitted with taps so that there is no water loss except when the tin is drawn off. Fine concentrate from the last four spigots is put over a curvilinear table which sits on a steel base packed with earth.

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". The term "industrial minerals" covers a vary wide field. However in Australia this field tends to be characterised by the follow- ing: (1) Relatively low unit values. (2) Product specifications can be exacting compared to the metalliferous field. (3) Product specifications often have to be tailored to the needs of the end user. (4) Beneficiation plants tend to involve low capital outlays relative to the metalliferous field. However they often have to produce products'to a range of specifications. (5) Technology often influences what can be considered as reserves. (6) Because of low unit values industrial minerals tend to be relatively cost sensitive. This is particularly the case in regard to transport. (7) Location of deposits near to major urban areas (markets) dictates a greater pressure on ecological aspects. (8) In Australia there has been a tendency to vertical integration largely due to the restricted market available. Reserves assessment is shown to be critically dependent upon the above Factors.

The wide application of computers in beneficiation plants has resulted in the creation of a number of complex automatic control systems at all stages of ore dressing processes. To create such systems it is necessary to solve complex problems of analysis and calculation. The application of computers to solve these problems demands development of simple and effective methods of investigation and simulation of ore dressing process dynamics because all the known methods are complicated in usage and cannot guarantee the desired accuracy and quality of process control. A new grapho-analytical method of investigation and calculation of ore dressing flow sheet dynamics, worked out by the authors of this paper, is based on proportion method development and is used to construct dynamic characteristics of the investigated processes. It is possible to use the given method for investigating benefication schemes with flotation machines having non-linear static characteristics and circulating loads. The suggested method of investigation of concentration flow sheet dynamics allows us to obtain dynamic characteristics of technological process parameters in both linear and non-linear systems. Moreover, the final result can be obtained without labour consuming analytical calculations by a simple graphical construction based on the static characteristics of the known equipment and processes.

The post pillar cut and fill stoping method has been adopted by King Island Scheelite for the extraction of the main Dolphin orebody. The orebody is a massive, tabular deposit varying from 10 to 50 metres in thickness, and dipping at approximately 30¦ towards and under the sea bed. The mining method was selected for 1. maintenance of hangingwall support under the sea bed; 2. maximisation of first stage ore extraction; 3. flexibility of mining, allowing maintenance of grade and selective mining around waste bands within the orebody, and 4. compatibility of existing equipment both with stoping and the on-going underground mine development programme. Stope parameters were established on the basis of initial rock stress analyses, and since the undercut phase of mining the stoping programme has been monitored with various types of deformation measuring devices installed in a series of large diameter boreholes.

Up to 80 per cent of the copper in a bornite ore can be quickly leached with percolating acidified ferric sulphate solutions. The upper limit for rapid copper extraction is set by the conversion of bornite to slowly dissolving chalcopyrite. The dissolution occurs in two stages: a rapid linear initial stage, followed by a slow, non-linear stage. The initial step is largely controlled by the rate of oxidant supply (Fe2(S04)3); temperature is not an important variable during the initial reaction. The second leaching stage is controlled by chemical and physical factors and is temperature dependent. The initial copper leaching rates are insensitive to both the concentration of the ferrous sulphate reaction product, and the sulphuric acid concentration.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control in New South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

THIS note gives comments on the paper by Kitaev et al on p. 68 of this book and compares results with those obtained by ourselves. We wish to say that the authors are to be congratulated on their sophisticated approach to an important problem and that it complements our efforts on flow maldistribution.1-5 It is our view that Eqs. (1)-(5) on p. 69 are impressive, but unfortunately with present day computers and computational facilities, it would be quite impractical to contemplate the numerical solution of these. Eq. (8) in the authors' paper, on p. 70, does provide the logical starting point for tackling flow maldistribution problems and strictly speaking this equation is more accurate than Eq. (1) in our paper in this book. We note in passing that there is direct experimental evidence to support the contention that our Eq. (1) is at least a reasonable approximation and one may question in a practical sense whether the refinement afforded by Eq. (8) in the paper by Kitaev et a/ is justified. While one must readily accept the appropriateness of Eq. (8) of Kitaev et al as a starting point, the subsequent mathematical manipulation by the authors is open to serious criticism. In order to solve this complex, non-linear equation Kitaev et al postulated irrotational flow, which afforded considerable simplification. One can argue simply on physical grounds that the assumption of irrotational flow is inappropriate, a fact which should be readily apparent on inspection of the flow fields shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of Kitaev's paper. It follows that while the starting point through the use of Eq. (8) is correct the results derived from this starting point may be suspect because of the erroneous nature of the irrotational flow assumption.

On the southern flank of Lihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000-1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction- modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

Segregation of tailings on deposition can occur as a result of a) sub-aqueous deposition, and b) sub-aerial deposition at lower solids concentrations (i.e. when the solids concentration is less than the segregation threshold). The effects are likely to be more pronounced in the case of subaqueous deposition.This paper presents the results of an investigation of a sub-aqueous tailings facility.Data from the investigation show extreme variations in particle size and density compared to test results for non-segregated ‘all-in” tailings. The results indicate that on segregation both the fine and coarse splits tend towards a well sorted (poorly graded) mix, and both have significantly lower consolidated density than the all in tailings. This result is reasonably well known for the case of the segregated fines (“slimes ponds”) but less appreciated for the coarse fraction. The results suggest that if the effects of segregation are not allowed for, the overall density of the deposit can be seriously over-estimated at the design stage. Also the quantity of water retained in the tailings can significantly influence water recovery and water balance results.CITATION:Seddon, K, 2018. KCGMÆs Fimiston Open Pit, located in the centre of the historic Golden Mile, is situated above some 3000 kilometres of old underground workings. These workings, both level and vertical, present significant safety and operational problems in the pit. One of these challenges is in safely drilling void areas so that they can be charged and blasted effectively. Current drilling practices in these areas require machines that can only drill 115 mm holes on a smaller pattern than the standard blast pattern. This results in more time and cost to both drill and charge these areas. Any other method currently available to drill out these areas involves putting operators in a potentially hazardous situation by being too close to the void area being drilled. Not effectively drilling and blasting these areas leads to hazardous situations further in the mining cycle including oversize, large toe and uncollapsed voids. Ineffective blasting also causes reductions in mining productivity and mine to mill performance. In response to these issues, KCGM has commissioned the implementation of a fully remote controlled DM45 blast hole drill rig to drill out selected void areas. The remote system, installed in conjunction with Ausdrill Ltd and GM Mining Electrics, is designed to operate similarly to a tele-remote bogging system with the operator controlling the drill rig from a separate control cabin via radio signals and video feed. This allows KCGM to drill in areas of higher risk without exposing the operators to voids. The drill rig will also be able to drill standard patterns through some specially selected void areas, reducing costs and extra time associated with drilling and charging void affected areas. The remote rig is expected to provide a number of benefits, both in the drilling process and in further downstream operations. Costs of drilling in void areas are expected to decrease with standard patterns instead of smaller patterns being drilled. Safety and operator comfort are also expected to increase through removing the operator from the pit floor. Blasting is also expected to see significant improvements through increased ease of charging void areas (because of larger holes and standard patterns), more consistent patterns resulting in less secondary blasting and toe and an overall improvement in the speed and cost of charge-up practices. This more consistent blasting will also improve shovel productivity, crusher performance and overall mine-to-mill efficiency. This paper presents an overview of the development of the remote controlled system, including modifications that have occurred since commissioning. It explains some of the problems encountered and how these have been solved. Key issues for operational success will be identified and explained with a view to making future implementations easier. Factors used to assess the performance of the remote controlled rig will also be explained in further detail and used in a preliminary assessment of the rigÆs feasibility.

Artificial support can be used to improve wall stability in open pit mines. This is examined for a particular case where the factor of safety for a slope is kept constant by using artificial support as the slope angle is increased. It is demonstrated that the savings in excavation generally exceed the cost of support. However, in order to correctly judge the eco- nomic impact of artificial support on the project, all the elements relat- ing to the use of artificial support must be taken in account.

It is a privilege for me to participate in this vitally important discussion of The Role of Governments in the Management of Resources. The distinction of my fellow participants is evidence that this event is a matter of extreme importance and attracts international attention. In the management of natural resources, government and private enterprise share awesome responsibilities for the economic well-being of nations. Mining and its relation to the prosperity of nations is almost as old as recorded history. Copper was being mined and extractive metal- lurgy practised at Timna in Israel's southern desert as far back as 4000 B.C., and the rich mines of Laurium not only saved the Greeks from Persian domination 2500 years ago, but also provided Athens with a monopoly of silver in the Mediterranean world. This bolstered the economic power of Athens and led to the golden age of Greek commerce and culture.

In the stability assessment of open pit walls, geotechnical engineers have to deal with uncertainty related to structural geology, rock mechanical parameters, groundwater and so on. This uncertainty will immediately and significantly impact on wall stability assessment and therefore. influence mineral recovery and ultimately the financial return of open pit mining. However, the conventional factor of safety applied to measure the stability of slopes and the relevant analytical computer packages cannot quantitatively consider the variability or uncertainty of the input data. As a supplement, therefore, geotechnical engineers have begun to apply probability to the stability assessment of open pit walls over the last two decades. To-date unfortunately, no powerful computer package is available to geotechnical engineers to conduct the probability analysis of slope stability. This paper presents a computer package of probability analysis for rock and soil slope stability. In this computer package, the strength parameters of rock and/or soil material such as cohesion, friction angle and unit weight of the different rock and/or soil type domain in a complex structural geology environment can be considered as the basic input random variables. Groundwater level can also be taken into account as a random variable in this package. Two `rigorous' limit equilibrium solutions, the Morgenstern/Price method and the Sarma method, can be used to calculate the factor of safety during Monte Carlo Simulation applied in this program. Five types of probability distribution are included in this package for the user to simulate basic input random variables. Two realistic cases from BHP Iron Ore are used to illustrate this package.

Fortescue Metals Group flagship operation, Cloudbreak, is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The mine is capable of delivering an annualised production rate of 40 Mt/a. Positioned 50 km to the east of Cloudbreak is Fortescue’s Christmas Creek operation, which has a combined processing capacity in excess of 50 Mt/a. Following on from these successes, Fortescue advanced development of its western Pilbara mines at the 60 Mt/a Solomon Hub. These processing installations place Fortescue in a strong position to deliver on a guidance of between 155–160 Mt/a for financial year 2014/2015.As Fortescue enters a phase of asset consolidation and debt repayment over expansion, the business is commanding stronger performance through enhanced plant operating practices and mine site cost reduction initiatives. To this end, the strategic placement of instrumentation is an area being given greater consideration. Access to real-time information pertaining to conveyed materials is of major interest to operators for making timely process control decisions. Fortescue has recognised the importance of accurate and up-to-date process information about their ores and hence, has adopted the use of Scantech’s Geoscan mineral analysers at two of their mines.There are two Geoscans at Cloudbreak; one on the ROM feed conveyor and another on the final product conveyor. These allow the in-feed material grade characteristics to be assessed. Moreover, the final product stream can be monitored to ensure product quality is maintained within acceptable quality tolerances. A third Geoscan is installed at Christmas Creek mine on a conveyor that transfers final products to Stockyards.This paper discusses the use of the Geoscans in these installations, including benefits to Fortescue’s operations, as well as functional considerations such as the impact of maintenance and calibration. "This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. Numerous recent analyses have shown that future demand for a broad range of critical commodities is unlikely to be met by new discoveries and recycling alone. The only practical alternative source to address this shortfall comes from orebodies which are currently either uneconomic or inaccessible. A common assumption is that a simple rise in commodity price will render these deposits economic. The mining industry has a long history of innovation allowing economic production from increasingly low grade and technically challenging orebodies. Industry “roadmaps” have been produced on a regular basis, with the aim of identifying future innovations which will allow this progression to continue. At the same time, there have been relatively few systematic analyses of the actual range of challenges facing undeveloped orebodies. The aim of this study is to analyse the mix of challenges faced by a group of undeveloped orebodies in order to better understand the relative importance and necessity of innovations applicable to the deposits, with the ultimate aim of determining the relative value and impact of possible innovations to the economic viability of those deposits.
