Lower transportation costs, improved handling and better utilization efficiency are some of the reasons that make low moisture coal product desirable. There has been considerable interest in the development of effective coal dewatering techniques to achieve this result. One avenue of considerable merit for enhancing dewatering processes is by modification of the surface chemistry of the coalwater slurry system by chemical means, resulting in better performance of existing equipment. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the utility of surface active agents in the enhancement of fine coal dewatering. A large variety of proprietary dewatering agents have been studied in relation to their efficiency in enhancing the dewatering of a number of Australian coals. Properties of particular coals that make them amenable to improved dewatering by particular chemical agents have been identified. Surface studies, including surface tension and zeta potential measurements as a function of surfactant concentration, as well as dewatering assessments, were used. Particular attention was paid to filtration, but the results could be applied to other dewatering systems.

The aim of this paper is to present an innovative method to help delineate potential target volumes for haematite-goethite mineralisation as opposed to more magnetic ores. This is achieved through interpretation and modelling (2.5D and 3D inversions) of ground magnetics and gravity surveys over the Koolanooka South prospect in Western Australia. The targets are assumed to be dense and weakly magnetic and hosted within banded iron formation (BIF) horizons. Geophysical interpretation (2D map) was performed using a variety of processed magnetic and gravity images (Betts et al, 2007) to determine the distribution of lithologies, to understand the structural architecture and to map out any anomalous areas of excess density (possibly indicating goethite alteration). The created geological map is used to build geological cross-sections (geometrically consistent) that were modelled (in 2.5 D) against both potential field datasets. The crosssections are consequently used as the framework to build a 3D geological model. The model defines 3D volumes of rocks including several BIF horizons. The distribution of densities and magnetic susceptibilities of the BIFs is inverted within the GOCAD«-VPmg environment to reduce the misfit between the response of the model and the observed gravity and magnetics. By combining the results of both petrophysical property distribution it is possible to map out (using classical GIS type queries in 3D) volumes of higher density and lower magnetic susceptibility.

Blast exclusion zones are instrumental in protecting equipment and personnel. When there is no constraint in footprint, the exclusion zone can be enormous, practically eliminating the hazard of flyrock. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case and in many circumstances the blast design needs to be altered to suite such scenarios. When a conservative design approach is taken, it could completely eliminate any form of ejection, whether it is from the free face or the bench itself. The degree to which typical flyrock models describe fragment motion through air with ballistic flight equations are not justified when such a high level of control is applied. Uranium mining operations commenced at Ranger mine site, Jabiru NT Australia in May 1980. The Ranger orebodies, totalling approximately 110 000 tonnes contained U305 had been indicated by airborne radiometric survey in 1969 and confirmed by drilling the following year. Both diamond and percussion drilling methods were used to define the mineralisation and samples were analysed using a combination of radiometric and neutron activation techniques. Ore reserve estimates were calculated from conventional and geostatistical methods, and following the mining of 15 million tonnes of ore, reconciliations with before mining estimates are well within acceptable industry standards. In-pit grade control employs radiometric techniques including a radiometric truck discriminator built in Australia to mine specification to meet production requirements and improve productivity. Environmental requirements associated with uranium mining are a daily consideration.

The mining industry often needs to operate in remote or climatically harsh locations. The industry has recently been forced to deal with extreme conditions including floods, heatwaves and droughts. As these are becoming progressively frequent occurrences, mines typically build ‘downtime’ into production schedules and expect to incur costs to manage the various risks arising from climate extremes. Importantly, many environmental conditions are becoming more extreme and consequently, risk management based on past data can become increasingly ineffective. Market and shareholder demand for fewer interruptions are another pressure on mines to avoid prolonged or frequent downtime. Hence, adaptation to climate is becoming an important strategic move for many companies, many of whom are using future climate scenarios and alternative risk evaluations.We present here a method that uses commonly available mine site data to assist decision-making for reducing vulnerability to sudden flood. The method, ‘climate-related adaptation from terrain evaluation results’ (CRATER), identifies a mine’s flood ‘hot-spots’ and presents them as a ‘traffic lights’ warning map. The process then requires a failure analysis process such as fault-tree analysis to identify both the cause of possible failures and a range of possible failure-avoidance adaptations. In the final stage, management can assess the most suitable option for the mine, based on the availability of capital such as time, facilities, labour and money in addition to social acceptability of the options. CRATER has been tested in an open cut mine environment and is now being further developed to identify how subsidence over underground mines may impact on flooding and ponding over the mining life cycle (CRATER II). The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex. Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) /Calgary Coal Research Laboratory and the National Research Council in Ottawa established a joint working research group with industry to develop and test various computer models for application in surface coal mining operations in western Canada.The first part of the paper deals with the problems the group experienced during the past two years especially having model specification and requirements defined and understand site management practices.The second part of the paper deals with site specific development of general mine model for TransAlta Utilities' Highvale Mine in Alberta. Described here are the development of an interactive truck/shovel model for their three pit operation, selection and application of dragline model for tandem operation with the extended bench method, criteria for operational model of the five seams operation with selec-tive mining approach.

The Porgera gold deposit in the Papua New Guinea highlands contains about 387 tonnes of gold. The results of its exploration show the benefits of persistence and commitment to this difficult deposit. The mineralization consists of a complex intermix of auriferous and argentiferous sulphides, gold tellurides and free gold as disseminations, veins, stockworks and breccia matrix. Its deposition was structurally contolled within a system of mafic diorite intrusions and adjacent sediments. Two styles of alteration accompany the mineralization. Gold grades vary erratically throughout the deposit. Over a period of 22 years nine phases of exploration have been undertaken by six companies or consortia of companies. Surface rock chip sampling, geological mapping followed by scout and systematic grid diamond drilling have been the most successful exploration tools. Exhaustive metallurgical process investigations and economic evaluations of mining options have been invaluable in guiding the exploration towards defining the ore body. Impetus was given to the project during times of flagging enthusiasm by several important discoveries and a breakthrough in the metallurgical processing approach. The discovery of high grade ore deep in Zone VII in 1984 turned this marginal deposit into a potentially very large gold mine.

Sulphur partition between metal and slag has been examined on a cast-by-cast basis for BTIP furnaces. Partition values. were calculated from thermodynamic equilibrium data together with oxygen activities computed from the manganese partition. The S-C interaction coefficient, esc , was treated as an adjust- able parameter and the agreement between calculated and measured S partition values optimized. In the case of furnaces operating with low viscosity slags this procedure led to estimates of esc in close agreement with previously measured values. The same analysis applied to daily average data for several Kawasaki Steel furnaces led to the same esti- mates of e c s , indicating a similar approach to equilibrium. Silicon partition between metal and slag has been examined on a time average basis and found to be far removed from thermodynamic equilibrium for most Australian furnaces. A study of Japanese furnaces of comparable size reveals a temperature dependence of Si parti- tion which appears to be close to equilibrium. Australian furnaces approach this behaviour only when operating with low viscosity slags. A preliminary examination of the effects of burdening with TiO 2 on the silicon partition is also reported.

The unmanned driving technology in open pit coalmines is an important technology that relies on innovation to drive the development of the open pit coal mining industry in China’s transformation of growth drivers and industrial structure upgrading. It is an important path to solve the shortage of mine truck drivers in the future mining, an important way to improve the working environment of open pit mining personnel, and an important foundation for achieving flexible production capacity in open pit mining to cooperate with the coordinated development of new energy. The communication rules at intersections are key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of unmanned driving in open pit coalmines. This paper proposes a collaborative traffic strategy between unmanned trucks for the single bucket unmanned truck intermittent process system in open pit coalmines. Based on the gap theory, this paper analyses the conflict characteristics and establishes a coordinated traffic strategy for the common intersection and merging conflicts of unmanned truck trucks in open pit coalmines, A multi-agent system simulation platform was built to evaluate the coordinated traffic efficiency under different initial average gap sizes of vehicles, with intersection traffic density, vehicle speed, and gap changes as key indicators. The results show that under the simulation conditions of this article, when the initial average gap of vehicles reaches three (four) times or more of the safe distance, the coordinated traffic performance of intersection conflicts (merging conflicts) is better, and the traffic capacity of intersections is close to the traffic capacity without conflicts.

The anticipated economic life of the mine, which defines the rate of mine production, is dictated initially by the design capacity of the mill/concentrator and the production capacity of the mine relative to the grade and tonnage of ore that can be encompassed by the pit design. A small pit will result in smaller investment and cash flow; in contrast, a larger size of pit will increase capital investment and annual revenue. Since open pit mine design and long-term production sequencing are essentially based on three-dimensional block models, changes in block dimensions leads to different mine sizes, and therefore changes in the mine life. The physical characteristics of the deposit, such as reserve tonnage and ore grade, affect the expected future revenues from the mining project, and consequently they affect the life of the mine. Large blocks will increase the recoverable ore reserves and production rates and hence increase the mine life. This paper discusses the effects of the block dimension on the commercial ore reserve, grade-tonnage curve and its effect on the production rate, ultimate pit size, mining cost and consequently the mine life. The result shows that block height is the most effective parameter governing the economical life of the mine.

There is today widespread concern about the future of the mining industry. In attempting to understand the underlying causes the paper probes in some detail, the long term structural changes affecting growth of metal demand and the development of excess mineral supply capacity. This examination reveals an industry characterised by an unfavourable combination of high barriers to exit and low entry barriers. While rising entry barriers are expected to herald some improvement in the profitability of mining over the next decade, this adjustment is likely to be slow and will require a more economically rational assessment of the industry by corporations and governments Alike.

The Ardlethan tin concentrator had dete riorated considerably in metallurgical per- formance, maintenance and plant availability. This problem was compounded by low tin prices and International Tin Council quotas. Mid- 1976 figures were: throughput - 1300 tonnes per day, availability 83% and metal recovery 537. Major problems existed throughout the circuit from crushing to tailings disposal and with morale, staffing, and housekeeping. With the lifting of the quotas in June 1976, management provided funds to implement a major rehabilitation programme and some fifteen major projects, at a cost of about $1.3 million have been completed to date. The change in performance has been dram- atic, and end of 1977 performance figures are: throughput - 1700 tonnes per day, availability 90% and metal recovery 65%.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at its Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter was recently equipped with tuyeres angled at 25 degrees instead of the usual 10 degrees. This change was prompted by the results of model studies undertaken by tha Research Department of Imperial Smelting Processes Limited, at Avonmouth in the United Kingdom, and by the favourable results of operating trials on the Cockle Creek furnace using bent-tip tuyeres to simulate 25 degree inclination. The use of 25 degree angle tuyeres has made it possible to operate with lower zinc values in discard slag and has improved hearth stability over a wider range of sinter quality and composition.

The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.

Major problems overcome include obtaining reliable pH measurements at 100¦C, prevention of scale build up in spent electrolyte heaters, blinding of jarosite filter cloths and the deposition of gypsum in filter presses.

A series of numerical experiments were performed in order to define the fracture strength of schistose rock during crushing. Fracture strength was shown to decrease as the fabric aligned with the principal axis of loading. One of three types of characteristic stress-strain behaviour are defined by the orientation of the fabric with respect to the applied stress.
