Separation of leach residue suspended solids from pregnant liquor solution is an important step in hydrometallurgy flowsheets. Alternative flowsheet options are counter-current decantation (CCD) thickeners or counter current washing (CCW) horizontal belt vacuum filters. Extensive sedimentation and vacuum filtration simulations have been completed by FLSmidth on leach discharge slurries to indentify equipment capacity and performance. These data were used to compare Capex and Opex for CCD versus CCW alternatives. In addition, Capex and Opex for large horizontal belt vacuum filters with filtration areas greater than 250m2 are compared to current state of the art sizes of 150m2. This paper presents this information and discusses various advantages and disadvantages.

The construction and placement of tunnels by means of jacking is continually advancing. This paper presents an outline of the construction of a major highway tunnel placed by a combination of mining and progressive placement by hydraulic jacking of precast units. Features of the project were the relatively shallow ground cover between rail and road routes over the tunnelling and jacking operations and also the weight of tunnel sections to be moved into position.

The 6000m long King Headrace Tunnel will be driven through hard Owen Conglomerate in the Eastern third and feldspar porphyry in the Western two thirds, with the anticipated hardness up to 350MPa unconfined compressive strength. Since the Commission had not driven a long, large diameter tunnel for some twenty years, major research was undertaken to assess the current tunnelling trends. Tunnel boring machines were compared with drill and fire equipment. Rail equipment was compared with rubber tyred equipment. Tenders were called with tenderers invited to submit alternatives if desired. Commissioning and production excavation using the equipment is discussed with the final conclusion being that the individual items of equipment purchased combined to make an efficient hard rock drill and blast system capable of progressing through all rock conditions likely to be encountered on the King and Anthony Schemes.

Air leakage through rock fractures in coal mining is a major cause of coal spontaneous combustion. In order to overcome the deficiency of the existing fire control technology and prevent coal spontaneous combustion by isolating coal from oxygen, the article proposes a novel technology of inorganic solidified foam (ISF) with high expansion to fill fractures effectively. ISF consists of fly ash, cement, setting accelerator, redispersible polymer powder, water and aqueous foam. For preparing homogeneous and stable ISF, a preparation system with a pore type foam generator, a mixer device installed with a hollow shaft and helical blades, air compressor, slush pump and monitoring instruments was developed, and the working principles of key devices were elucidated. Based on a series of experiments on the different ratios of each component material and technological parameters of the preparation system, ISF with a foam expansion ratio of 8~10 and dry density of 250–400 kg/m3 was prepared. The relationship between elastic compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and density was summarised. Based on the injection experiment for fracture of loose coal pile with high temperature, the characteristics of sealing air leakage, compressive strength, thermal insulation, flow and cooling of ISF in the fresh state were investigated, indicating that ISF can effectively cut off the air leakage and cover the coal sample to reduce the temperature in the earlier stage, and ISF can remain stable and not crack. The ISF was applied to Luwa coalmine to seal small coal pillar pressure fractures and loose coal fractures in goaf. After press-casting the ISF in Luwa coalmine, the pressure-difference of inner-outer increased, meaning the effect of external conditions on the pressure-difference decreased, showing that it could plug the air leakage effectively.CITATION:Qin, B T, Shi, Q L, Lu, Y, Zhu, C, Li, F L and Jia, Y W, 2015. Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, aO2-, and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of aO2-, which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions.

The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The possible integration of this process with existing zinc condensation and recovery processes is Discussed.

The paper outlines the development in the control of dust in Australia over the last 20 years. Factors influencing dust make at the faces are discussed. The effect of high production systems is analysed. Changes in dust standards and results of dust sampling on longwalls and continuous miner panels are given. Research conducted on air curtains and water infusion on dust control on longwall faces is presented along with recommendations for future research. It is found that both dust curtains and water infusion can cut dust mak by 50" each when applied separately.

"Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. The basic parameters causing outbursts are rock pressure, gas characteristics and the physico-mechanical properties of the coal. The three sets of factors are to some degree interdependent. At Collinsville, the gas characteristics coupled with the physico-mechanical properties of the coal appear to be the major factors contributing to outbursts. The relative importance of rock pressure is uncertain. The following geological parameters appear to be necessary before outbursts can occur. 1. A coal rank greater than 1.2% vitrinite reflectance. 2. Thrust faults with throws greater than 3.Om or strike- slip faults with coal gouge wider than 0.3m. 3. Seam gas emission values greater than 1.1 cm3 /g. Igneous intrusions are the likely source of the carbon dioxide seam gas. Outbursts have occurred at depths ranging from 215m to 265m. They occur at these relatively shallow depths due to: 1. the high rank of coal at the present topographic surface and the high coalification gradient; 2. the relatively high degree of tectonic deformation of the strata; 3. the seam gas characteristics; and 4. the extent of igneous intrusions.

With production at Olympic Dam scheduled to commence in June 1988, it has been necessary to install a complete underground ore handling system capable of removing two million tonnes of material annually from the mine. The system comprises mucking from stope drawpoints, truck haulage to underground storage, primary crushing, conveying and hoisting. On the surface, material is conveyed to stockpiles at the Metallurgical Plant. Mining of the numerous special excavations within the system was incorporated into the mine's ongoing development program prior to the underground construction phase. Utilisation of a decline from the surface enabled versatile construction equipment to operate at the underground sites as well as simplifying the transportation and delivery of construction Materials.

Ranger Uranium Mines (RUM) operates an open cut located in the Top End of the North- ern Territory. Strict environmental controls govern all operations and the water management requirements have the greatest impact on mine planning. The two main goals of planning are to provide mill feed and to mine sufficient suitable quality waste rock for ongoing con- struction of the tailings dam. Early planning concentrated on staged development of the pit to provide access to as much ore as possible for a given amount of development. All waste was considered to be suitable construction material. Grade control of crusher feed was the main problem in planning, as wide vari- ations occur in ore grade over relatively short distances. Water management for the site ope- rates a no release' system for contaminated waters. Design storage has proven inadequate, and the open cut has been used as the extra storage. As construction of future stages of the tailings dam requires non-mineralised rock materials which meet specific quality criteria, the mine has had to re-examine long term plan- ning and pit development strategies. This has entailed the collection of much data not re- quired under normal mining conditions, such as the assaying of waste drill core. The overall impact on mine planning of the environmental regulations has been to alter the philosophy of earlier planning, making it necessary to create a new strategy for pit development with

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

Since 2009, the Northern Territory and Australian governments have been working under a national partnership arrangement to inform a rehabilitation plan for the former Rum Jungle uranium mine. Part of the rehabilitation strategy is to backfill a flooded former pit (Pit), which extends down to 100m below the current pit lake surface and was historically partially backfilled with uranium tailings. It is proposed to utilise the remaining pit volume below water level to sub-aqueously store Potentially Acid Forming (PAF-I) waste rock which currently occupies large stockpiles across the site. The rehabilitation design and planning process undertaken to develop a strategy commensurate to project objectives and construction constraints involved the establishment of key constraints derived from the analysis of historic data sources and preliminary design efforts. Tabled strategies were balanced against dependent project tasks and project objectives, especially surrounding minimising disturbance of highly contaminated materials within the Pit. Ideas were developed in conjunction with industry input and review of case histories to develop a remediation solution that is constructible within the project timeframe and constraints.

It has long been recognised that applications of the Net Present Value (NPV) investment decision making methodology can have serious deficiencies in situations where investment can be delayed and, once made, various options allow increases or decreases in the level of output. NPV valuation can undervalue the project if it does not incorporate future flexibilities or ""options"". It is important to realise that a proper valuation of a project (ie, valuation of its future cash flows) must incorporate an analysis of optimal future decisions involved in managing the project. Current valuation cannot be divorced from a consideration of future decision making. There is now a considerable amount of literature, mainly academic, identifying and exploring ways of remedying these deficiencies in the application of NPV. While the necessity of period by period analysis is sometimes acknowledged, little if any practical illustrative model building has been published to date, aside from algorithms using continuous time stochastic processes which deny access to the uninitiated.

Coal loss is an important issue at many coalmines, with losses of five per cent being common. The type of loss varies from mine to mine but is dependent on mine strata, the drilling and blasting processes applied and the mining method used. Typical coal loss mechanisms from the drill and blast process are coal roof damage and edge loss. Usually a reduction in coal loss is in direct competition with the need to provide material that is well-fragmented and a muck pile that has the required cast percentage. These competing issues were addressed over a two-year period at a mine in the New South Wales Coalfields by implementing a five-step approach. This was centred around building an understanding of the coal loss mechanisms utilising proprietary heave- modelling software, measuring coal losses by comparing survey to drill and/or gamma logs and implementing appropriate coal loss reduction processes. The end result exceeded expectations with a 95 per cent reduction in coal loss. The Canahuire epithermal Au-Cu-Ag deposit in southern Peru is a complex and challenging deposit for metallurgical studies. It has issues of gold locking in sulfides and non-sulfides, deleterious elements and acid rock drainage (ARD). From scoping study to feasibility study, there has been considerable improvement in the understanding of the important geometallurgical characteristics that need to be measured and modelled. This paper presents the current understanding and the requirements to continue to provide optimal models for mining studies.Significant effort has been put into understanding the genesis of the deposit. Improved spatial and temporal understanding of lithology, alteration, structure and mineralogy was used to build a geological and alteration model of the deposit.Early metallurgical programs quantified the effect of head grade on process plant recoveries, but the geometallurgical and statistical analyses did not identify other physical characteristics that influence these recoveries. The studies improved the understanding of the nature of locked gold which can occur as minute inclusions (< 5 ¦m) in sulfides (primarily pyrite with lesser arsenopyrite, pyrite being 100 times more abundant than arsenopyrite) and gangue minerals (quartz and carbonates) as well as solid solution in arsenopyrite and pyrite.The presence of pyrite and the limited buffering capacity of waste rocks increases the potential ARD, which will require mitigation costs before, during and after operations. Waste rock ARD potential has been classified and incorporated in the geometallurgical model. The current classification of waste rock at Canahuire, using international classification standards, is limited due to the complexity of the deposit.Complex deposit metallurgy necessitates a complex process flow sheet, including flotation and cyanidation. Economic recovery will be constrained by the relationships between economic variable grade, other elements and mineralogy. These constraints and inter-relationships are difficult to establish throughout the deposit with a single test. A follow-up geometallurgical program is under investigation and will attempt, with the help of additional test work, to map areas of higher and lower recoveries. It is hoped that metallurgical response can be linked to measurable parameters other than head grade. Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coals in the Greymouth, Ohai and Kaitangata coalfields represent a major national energy resource comprising-up to 2500 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. The three coalfields are closely related in terms of age and sedimentary and structural character. The most striking feature common to all is the complexity of the geology which has severely restricted exploration and mining of these coal resources. This complexity is manifest in the irregular lensoid nature of coal seams and by the incidence of unpredictable medium and small scale faulting and folding. There are many geological similarities between these coalfields which are considered to arise from a common origin which can be related to the plate tectonic evolution of the southwest Pacific region. In order to efficiently assess and exploit these coal resources it will be necessary to know their geology in great detail. This can he achieved by increasing the understanding of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the coal bearing basins. This knowledge may be gained by the application of traditional (ie drilling, field mapping) and innovative techniques (ie high resolution seismic, in seam seismic) with on going research-oriented studies (ie basin analysis, coal petrography).

A multidisciplined approach arrives at superior solutions that are rigorous, holistic, achievable and often novel. Electro slag remelting (ESR) is one of the methods used to produce high-cleanliness steel. In the ESR method, the product steel electrode is immersed in flux, and the electrode is melted by the Joule heat of the flux generated by high current. CaF2-based melts are mainly used as fluxes, but the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts varies widely among researchers and measurement methods. Therefore, this experiment aims to measure the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts based on the van der Pauw-Ohta method, which does not require the cell constant that is a fundamental error factor in electrical conductivity measurement at high temperatures. The measurement temperature was set at 1450–1600°C, and dehydrated Ar flowed through the furnace at 200 mL/min. Electrodes were fabricated by Pt-30mass per cent Rh alloy, and the electrodes were connected to an impedance analyser using a four-terminal probe. The electrodes were immersed in the melt, and the impedance and phase angle were measured by AC frequency sweep (50 Hz to 200 kHz). The electrical conductivity was then calculated by utilising the impedance’s real part values when the impedance’s imaginary component was zero. The electrical conductivity showed a positive temperature dependence. The electrical conductivity of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt increased with increasing temperature but was found to be roughly one-third of those of the previous studies. In the conductivity measurement of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt, the AC frequency with a phase angle of 0° was found to be different depending on the temperature and immersion depth. By sweeping the frequency, the impedance at the phase angle of 0° can be obtained, which enables us to measure the electrical conductivity more accurately.

Recent changes to environmental legislation and trends in the environmental regulation of mining in the Northern Territory are being driven by (among other factors) Federal Government policies and international agreements on the environment. These trends are discussed and the expected application of the NT Water Quality Management Strategy (based on the National Water Quality Objectives) over the next few years is examined with respect to mine environmental management practices. Some of the potential conflicts and changes in approach which may develop are identified and examples discussed. Proactive means of integrating trends in environmental legislation with mine planning and waste management are discussed.
