Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.

The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.

Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

40 percent of the coal reserves and 40 percent of the ouput of coal in China is of thick coal seams. The sub-level caving in Yangguan has evolved together with the hydraulic supports, to provide recovery rates today of 80 to 85 percent, waste ratios less than 10 percent and daily outputs exceeding 7,000 tonnes. Matching of rate of shearing bottom coal to caving of top coal is most important to achieve "simultaneous" operations. Spontaneous combustion in the goat, gas, including in the goal, and dust, are particular safety hazards which are combatted with various stringent measures.

The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. The 14.7 km Mt. MacDonald Tunnel beneath Rogers Pass in Canada used both drill-and-blast and machine boring methods. A unique ventilation system provides for diesel operations. The design featured minimum construction support and an unrei.nforced poured concrete lining. The west heading was excavated in a single-stage drill-and-blast operation. The east heading used a TBM top heading with a drill-and-blast keyhole bench. The choice of methods was controlled by varying geology, with up to 1,700 m rock cover. Construction performance and progress are evaluated.

Between, 1980 and 1984, the demand for non- ferrous metals in the free world grew annually by 1.5 per cent for copper, 0.4 per cent for lead, 1.4 per cent for zinc, and 2.5 per cent for nickel. The growth rate decreased substantially compared to the rate experienced before 1980, and was far lower than the GNP growth during the corresponding period. The main reasons for this are considered to be 1. resource-saving efforts by industrialized countries resulting from the first and the second oil crises, 2. saturated demand for durable consumer goods, and 3. substitution of non-ferrous metals by new materials such as optical fibers.

The QSL continuous lead smelting process incorporates two basically different pyro- metallurgical operations: roast-reaction, smelting of galena concentrate, followed by carbothermic reduction of some by-product lead oxide slag. Both steps are performed simultaneously in separate compartments of a long horizontal cylindrical reactor, which is lined with fused chrome-magnesite bricks. This converter-type reactor contains a liquid bath consisting of a shallow layer of lead bullion with a superimposed layer of slag, the lead content of which is gradually reduced from about 50% to discardible levels. Metal relative to slag, and slag relative to the gas phase are in continuous countercurrent motion. A lead well is arranged at the flue end of the reactor, and an overflow tap for slag at the opposite end. Tonnage oxygen for oxidation and smelting of the charge, and sub- stoichiometric mixtures of pulverized coal and oxygen for reduction and heating of the slag, are directly blown into the bath using fluid-protected Savard-Lee injectors. High gas-liquid momentum transfer ensures intensive local mixing, and enables rapid mass and heat transfer.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. It is a practice, however, which is extending ag the effect of the impurities in zinc on products manufactured therefrom becomes widely recognized.The notes hereunder are intended to briefly survey the principal uses to which high-gr.ade zinc is being put, and, wherever possible, to indicate the effect of the impurities normally present in the lower grades of zinc.In the United States zinc is graded into five divisions, known respectively as "High-grade" "Intermediate" "Brass Special" "Selected," and "Prime Western." Mixers are commonly used for the transfer of oxygen in gas-liquid-solid reactions in minerals processing. The process rate is usually controlled by two steps: gas-liquid mass transfer and reaction kinetics. Some examples are described along with the factors used for analysis of the mass transfer design problem. Typical oxygen rates and appropriate types of aeration systems or mixers are reviewed. The commonly used Rushton turbine has limitations in a number of mineral processes. The development and characteristics of the LIGHTNIN A315 axial flow gas dispersion impeller are described. Some practical examples which highlight its advantages are briefly described.

The flotation behaviour of the Hilton ore of Mount Isa Mines has been examined in the presence of two collectors (sodium ethyl xanthate (Ex) and sodium diisobutyldithiophosphinate (3418A)) over a range of flotation Eh values and collector additions. Tests were also conducted in the absence of collector to determine the relative contributions of natural and self-induced floatability of the major minerals in the feed. In these tests the influence of metabisulphite on the self-induced floatability of the minerals was also determined. Attention focussed on optimising the selectivity of galena flotation. It is shown that the Hilton ore sample contained lower levels of naturally hydrophobic iron sulphide minerals than are generally contained in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Furthermore, the self-induced floatability of galena was less than that exhibited by the galena in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Sodium metabisulphite (MBS) reduced the self-induced flotation of galena but had no effect on the natural floatability of the iron sulphide minerals.

The story of the Penjom gold mine located near Kuala Lipis on the Malay Peninsular demonstrates the valuable role successful exploration companies can play in the development of the gold mining industry. Avocet Mining PLC ('Avocet') began exploration in the area on a limited budget in 1989, securing land tenure around the Penjom alluvial workings in July 1990. The lease granted, known as Block 7, formed part of a land package offered at the time by the Pahang State Government to develop the resources of the area. Until the late-1980s, the Kuala Lipis region, situated approximately 180 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, had restricted accessibility for security reasons precluding serious exploration or mining activity. The situation has changed dramatically in the 1990s, with several foreign explorers active in the Peninsular, targeting old alluvial and underground workings adjacent to the north-south trending Raub-Bentong Suture. Deeper drilling of these prospects has shown there is potential for both small- to medium-scale open pit mining and possibly underground operations, providing companies such as Avocet with an ideal mining investment opportunity.

Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

An underground mine, a treatment plant and supporting facilities have been constructed at Lebong Tandai in Sumatra, Indonesia by PT Lusang Mining. Throughput is initially 50,000 tonnes per annum of ore with an inbuilt capability to expand to 100,000 tonnes per annum. Construction proceeded in parallel with design work on a tightly controlled critical path schedule. The very remote location of the mine, the difficult access and the fact that equipment was imported from many parts of the world presented a challenging project management problem. The transport system, which involves road, river and rail and support facilities on site had to be brought into full operation prior to the arrival of major equipment. Mine development involved the reopening of the old access drives and workings, refurbishing two shafts and the haulage system together with redevelopment of old stoping areas and the opening of new stoping areas. Ore production is now from three main areas using shrink and underhand stoping methods. Ore breaking and drive development is with conventional airleg mounted rockdrills and ANFO explosives. Exploration to locate and develop new reserves to replace ore mined is an ongoing activity.

There are a number of factors affecting the discovery and develop- ment of uranium in Australia which makes this mineral almost unique and quite different from other minerals. I. The role of the Australian Government, which initially encouraged the discovery by offering rewards to prospectors who discovered deposits that could become economic. 2. At a later stage, the Commonwealth and South Australian Govern- ments prevented the development and production of "new mines" by refusing to grant mining title and refusing to allow sales of uranium by not issuing export permits. 3. The unique property that uranium and its daughter products possessed, i.e. radioactivity, meant that any person who purchased a geiger coun- ter could go prospecting, even though they had no previous experience in prospecting and they had an equal opportunity of discovering a new deposit as a company or independent geologist. 4. Because the exploration/demand for uranium didn't occur until the 1940s very little background geological information or models were available and so the early discoveries tended to become the locus for exploration rather than moving into areas which might on geological concepts lead to exploration programmes based on geological models. Because of the lack of knowledge there was the exchange of geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Australia Geologist Survey.

Ore and coke of various size fractions (1 to 11 mm) were packed in a column (146 ó) and resistance to air flow measured under a range of conditions. Results have shown that layered charging results in an interface having essentially a directional structure the thickness of which is directly proportional to the coke and ore size ratio and whose flow resistance exceeds that of the coke layer many times its thickness. Friction factor - Reynolds number plots showed large positive departure from the Ergun equation for all components investigated whilst functional analysis and that in terms of bed constants, showed a strong dependency of the pressure gradient on bed properties and the actual particle size as well as the size ratio. It is also shown that pressure gradient in mixed beds follows previously reported behaviour and that a directional interface offers higher resistance to flow than a mixed interface having the same volumetric ore/coke ratio. Significance of results to practice is discussed.

When attempting to understand potential regional or community socio-economic changes that resource-extraction industries may produce, it is important to analyse the channels that promote these changes. In this study, we propose a conceptual framework to better understand how socio-economic effects are likely to emerge in regions impacted by mining. The framework considers three levels of hierarchical effects (Measham, Fleming and Schandl, 2016).In the first level, the resource-extraction industry causes four direct initial impacts on nearby communities: labour demand shock (mining employment generation), income generation (compensation to landowners and higher wages), environmental consequences and land tenure/Aboriginal issues and an increase in local tax revenues.The second level is shaped by the subsequent population increase (given by immigration of permanent or temporary residents) produced by the new levels of employment and income that resource windfalls can generate in resource-extraction regions. These increases in employment, income and population become the source for a rise in the demand for local (and non-local) goods and services.Finally, the third level is given by boomtown-like and other socio-economic effects generated from the initial effects.CITATION:Measham, T G and Fleming, D A, 2016. The eruption 75,000 y ago of the Younger Toba Tuff ignimbrite and associated ash-fall ranks as the greatest known volcanic event of the past million years. The ignimbrite is known to cover 21,000 km2 (it may extend farther under alluvium of the coastal plain) and forms a low-angle depositional shield centered on the Lake Toba caldera. The ignimbrite is largely nonwelded and shows systematic outward decreases in lithic and crystal contents and clast sizes. Coarse lithic lag breccias that occur at places 85 km apart point to two or more vents on a fissure having this length. The extensive associated ash-fall traceable as far as Malaysia and India is evidently a co-ignimbrite ash but could have a phreatomag-matic component. The Lake Toba caldera measures95 x 35 km and is >1 kn deep. It is not a single caldera but comprises several contiguous depressions and grabens diversified by two re-surgent domes. Earlier parts of the caldera are related to at least two earlier ignimbrites including the Older Toba Tuff dated by Chesner at 0.5 Ma. The caldera is elongated parallel to, and is only 25 km from, the great Sumatra strike-slip fault, and it can be considered almost certain that the caldera is in part a kind of pull-apart structure. The ignimbrites are very crystal-rich. There is no reason to think basaltic magma was involved in their emplacement. Together with ash-falls they have a total volume of several thousand cubic kilometers. They can be categorized as originating from partially crystallized granitic magmas that erupted because tectonic pull-apart occurred several times across the pluton. Small rhyolitic lava domes on fault-lines comprise the youngest volcanic products.
