Current regional geoscientific studies across the McArthur Basin as part of the National Geoscience Mapping Accord by the Northern Territory Geological Survey and Australian Geological Survey Organisation have provided a significant amount of new data which has enabled revision of the stratigraphic and chronologic framework of the basin. This paper provides an overview of these results, with particular emphasis on new results from Arnhem Land.

In both exploration and mining, the laboratory is often seen as a cost rather than a profit centre. The aim in most mining companies is to increase profits by reducing costs, so the budget for the laboratory is under constant pressure.There is another option; to see the laboratory as the brain of the operation. By lifting the status of the laboratory and treating it as a profit centre, mine costs may be reduced in other ways, e.g. reduction in milling costs. This change of status will require investing more capital in better equipment, more training for employees and more employees to carry out project research.There are many examples of major costs being incurred because of inadequate laboratory work. Conversely, by spending more money on laboratories and their activities, overall costs can be reduced or profits enhanced.

A rotating disc geometry has been used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of the metals cadmium, lead and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu/Zn and Cu/Fe systems for which the rection rate was found to be completely solution-phase mass-transfer controlled. When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0.2 to 0.4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in e which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomeon was obseived in the Cu/Zn Cu/Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass ,..~sfer controlled.

A prediction technique for support perfor- mance of hydraulic backfill in narrow stopes is applied to two stopes separated vertically by a sill pillar. Predicted stope wall closures and fill pressures compare favorably with field measurements taken over a period of several years at two mines in the Coeur d'Alene dis- trict. Stope wall closure and peak pillar stress can be substantially reduced by improved fill quality within a practicable range of fill and rock properties.

A small glass walled pot grate has been used to simulate drying of iron ore pellets in a travelling grate plant. This equipment has enabled the effect of decreasing grind and de- creasing pellet bulk density on plant production to be quantitatively predicted. These predic- tions are compared with plant experience. The use of the laboratory simulator in comparing the effect of various additives on plant production is also described and substantial improvements in both the goethite and free-water drying periods are predicted.

The Golden Pig mine has embarked on a diamond drill program design philosophy that increases flexibility of the program by greatly increased drill pattern densities. The use of standard broad pattern diamond drilling at the Golden Pig mine has previously lead to operational inefficiencies and impacted significantly on the costs of the mine. The diamond drill program philosophy and its interaction with mine planning is explained. The case study of the E lode mining as used to internally justify the increased drill densities is detailed.

This paper deals briefly with productivity-enhancing advances in shaft sinking technology in South Africa post-World War II in general and the developments and application of long rounds since the 1980s in particular and is amply illustrated.It touches on the conversion to circular section, concrete lined shafts, the introduction of tungsten carbide drill bit inserts and grab lashing; expounds the rationale driving the development of longer rounds; and then describes the evolution of long rounds using hand-held and mechanically mounted rockdrills in South Africa and Canada by both local and foreign contractors. The recent experience gained on the sinking of the South Deep Main Shaft follows. Results obtained from this experiment are tabulated and commented upon. The paper concludes with the postulation of æwhat nextÆ and æwhere toÆ scenarios. Addenda include a list of shaft rounds in excess of three metres in length blasted in the Main Shaft at South Deep and their results, typical round design, manufacturerÆs specifications for the 6 m shaft jumbo and rock drills.

Longwall mining in Australia is approaching maturity. Longwall production from 'state of the art' Australian longwall mines now rivals similar US based longwall operations. Regrettably however, Australian gate road development rates in general fall short of the required development to longwall production ratios that are required to sustain annual longwall production capabilities. By contrast, most US based longwall mines achieve the required development to longwall production ratios to sustain their longwalls. This is despite many having to drive three heading longwall panel gate headings to meet regulatory requirements.

The rapid industrialisation of the world was driven by an improved ability to utilise chemical energy. Unfortunately harnessing explosive energy did not come cheaply given the hundreds of lost lives. However, the modem explosives industry has made significant technological achievements, for explosives are now considered to be both safe and extremely effective. Upon closer inspection, it would appear the key to this achievement has been the development of initiation systems. While the focus may have been originally on safety, modem developments have concentrated upon harnessing the benefits of initiation control. Before attempting to gaze into the future, it is worth reviewing some of the significant advances that have occurred.

In the scope of the project named CAPUME II (EEC BRITE/EURAM contract - project MA2M-CT90,-0042(SMA)) for the development of an integrated mine planning system for underground mines, two of the main tasks were the development of a short-term mining planning procedure (module) and a numerical simulator of the mineral processing plant of Pirites Alentejanas - PA. The short-term mining planning module defines the mining sequences by solving a constrained minimisation problem. The ore grade variability is the objective function subject to the geometrical constraints of the mining method and to the maximum of `internal blending'. The optimisation problem is solved by applying a dynamic programming algorithm. The plant simulator is an essential tool of the planning system allowing the preview of metal grades/recoveries of copper, lead and zinc of concentrates streams, given the corresponding metal assays of the run-of-mine ore, defined by the short-term mine planning module. This way, the management can plan the short-term mining operations (the weekly sequence of exploration blocks and the internal planning) in order to fulfill given required conditions, based on a shipment schedule and on a purchaser's formula. In this paper, after a short description of the short-term mining planning module and of the simulation package named SIMUL, a synthesis of the main model development steps and the results of some simulation runs are presented and discussed.

A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

Mining companies have recognised that characterisation of particle breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimisation of comminution circuits. Recently the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterisation testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions. The latter is believed to be the dominant breakage mechanism in AG/SAG mills. Existing devices, such as the JKMRC Drop Weight Tester, are not suitable for performing repetitive impacts since they are too time consuming. Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalised experimental test program on professionally designed and manufactured JKRBT machines. The first JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the project in 2008, with commercial release expected in early 2009. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionise ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterisation of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control of comminution circuits since it is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement. The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed. In response to requests from the iron ore mining industry, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Mineral Physics has developed a number of bulk analysis techniques in which analyses are obtained directly from ore samples weighing many kilograms or from ore located on conveyor belts.Because penetrating neutron and gamma radiation is used, measurements are obtained from a large volume of ore, which ensures thal the analyses are represelllative of the bulk.Two different gamma-ray techniques have been developed to measure iron ore grade. The first is based on backscallering of 60CO gamma rays, while the second involves measurement of the annihilation radiation which arises when the ore is irradiated wilh 226Ra gamma rays. Both techniques measure the iron concentration with an accuracy (1 s) of better than 0.4% Fe.A thermal-neutron irradiation technique using a 252Cf neutron source has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron and the aluminium impurity (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines on a conveyor bell. Because the conveyor speed must not exceed about 0.05 m/s, if good accuracy for AI2O3 is required, an auxiliary analysis bell is required Lo avoid inLerference with normal ore processing. Dynamic trials have demonstrated that accuracies of 0.6% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3 can be obtained.

To compare open circuit lead primary rougher results at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., eleven surveys were made over five weeks of plant operation with varying ore sources, including a specially hauled sample of 100% Black Star ore. Three of the surveys which represented extremes in performance were selected for sizing, cyclosizing and assaying for lead, zinc and iron. A comparison of the flotation kinetics has revealed the similarities (including common problems) and differences for the surveyed ores. The concepts of entrainment and collectorless flotability are used to aid interpretation of the kinetic data.

In the expansion program of the iron ore pelletizing plant at Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel Ltd., an automatic computer control of products fineness on grinding department is practised. The main problem of the process control of a grinding system is scattering of measured fineness values of products. The scattering comes from the inherent nature of grinding systems, sampled powders and measuring systems. A method is developed to presume the exact status of the plant from scattering products (fineness values and to achieve a stable con trollability of the plant by utilizing the computer. An on-line fineness analyzer, an automatic sampling device and vari-speed air separators are also developed to compose the automatic grinding plant. This report introduces the fundamental epts and results of the automatic fineness rol system of the grinding plant.

Formed in 1965 to investigate the bauxite deposits on the Gove Peninsula, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Nabalco Pty. Limited undertook to determine the feasibility of establishing a mining operation and alumina plant of at least 500 000 tonne/year capacity. The drilling programme undertaken and the analytical methods, assumptions and criteria used to define practicably extractable bauxite are described. The ore characteristics and the interpretation of results used to evaluate the reserves are detailed. The operating techniques developed in mining ten per cent of the reserves and variations experienced between indicated and actual mining are examined and discussed.

Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.
