The Westerschelde tunnel will be the first permanent road link between the Dutch regions of South Beveland and South Flanders. Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. This paper describes the problems and their solutions.

In 1972 the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia was recognised as a stratigraphic horizon with significant potential for high grade iron ore reserves. Within the Newman area the Marra Mamba Iron Formation has been subdivided into four strati- graphic units: Lower BIF member, Middle BIF and shale member, Upper BIF member and Upper shale member - and a standard natural gamma log reference section compiled for the entire formation. The recognition of the Upper shale member as an additional unit contrasts to the previously proposed stratigraphy. Enrichment of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation to ore grade (0)8 percent calcined Fe) in the Newman area is restricted to the Upper BIF member and to a lesser extent to the Middle BIF and shale member. Typical ore from Orebody 29 is friable interbedded martite-ochreous goethite, signifi aptly different both physically and chemically from the Brockman Iron Formation ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. Large scale customer acceptance trials (in excess of 4 million tonnes) have shown that Marra Mamba ore crushed to fines and blended with Mt. Whaleback fines in a ratio of up to 15:85 forms an acceptable sinter feed.

Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method, provided that drawpoint spacing, drawpoint size and ore handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material and that the drawpoint horizon can be maintained for the draw life. In the near future several open pit mines that produce in excess of 50 000 tons per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low cost, large scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented. These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than has occurred in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent orebodies by low cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined. In the past caving has generally been considered for rock masses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust LHDs, a better understanding of draw control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than with drill and blast Methods.

Complex ores, characterised by intimate intergrowths between minerals, have previously been treated by flotation with limited success. The most common problem has been that the liberation size is often finer than the lower size limit for selection flotation. A technique has been developed in which the problem is overcome by the use of a selective agglomeration procedure in which the values are coalesced with oil to a size suitable for flotation prior to introduction into the flotation machine. A complex lead ore was characterised by QEM*SEM mineralogy as having a mean galena liberation size of 15 ¦m. The best recovery of lead at 50 per cent Pb grade by standard flotation was 53 per cent. After application of the procedure, 86 per cent recovery was obtained after a single cleaner step. The oil functions as a bridging liquid in the presence of conventional collectors which render the mineral oleophillic.

Trials of different tapping operations at Olympic Dam have been carried out with the aim of improving the safety of tapping and improving the integrity and lifetime of the taphole. This has involved trialling the use of a mudgun and drill on one of the tapholes of the electric furnace in place of the normal manual tapping procedures. The blister copper tapholes are currently closed using a conical clay plug formed around a steel bar. The plug is pushed into the taphole by hand to stop the flow, and the cooling on the outer part of the taphole freezes the blister copper in the tapping channel. The hole is burnt open using consumable oxygen lances. This puts the furnace technicians in close proximity to molten metal and heat û which is reflected in the safety incidents reported by these operators. By moving to a mudgun and drill operation, the furnace technicians will be moved away from the taphole area improving their safety. Additional benefits include: improved tapping cycles; extended taphole refractory lifecycles; and improved furnace integrity around the taphole, hopefully extending the campaign. This paper outlines the trials that have shown that it is possible to plug and drill blister copper (not matte) tapholes using a mudgun and drill.

In a dynamic environment such as the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea Geotechnical Engineering for the Ok Tedi Project must be described as both interesting and challenging. To be effective a reasonable sized team of dedicated people is required with occasional supplementation by specialist consultants and an annual review process. Ok Tedi Mining Limited's (OTML) Geotechnical Section has a vision to be recognised as the leading mine-based geotechnical engineering section in PNG and to be world class by any international standards. This paper deals with the organisational and operational duties of the Geotechnical Section at the Ok Tedi Mine. One of our major roles is in the area of safety, and in particular in the early warning of natural and mining induced geological hazards that may affect safety and/or productivity. The major activities in- clude geotechnical inspections (pit, waste dumps, tunnels, re- gional), data collection activities and database management, geotechnical design and control work.

The majority of water to the Olympic Dam mine and the nearby townships of Roxby Downs and Andamooka is supplied from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB). There are no permanent local water sources available to Olympic Dam. The use of water from the Great Artesian Basin by Olympic Dam receives considerable attention by BHP Billiton and is extensively regulated by the Government of South Australia. Olympic Dam has robust business management systems in place to ensure the sustainable use of water from the GAB including ISO9001 and ISO14001 systems to deliver the targeted outcomes and obligations of the Olympic Dam Environmental Management and Monitoring Program. The management systems ensure that Olympic Dam retains accountability for its water demand from the GAB over the life of the mine. This accountability has delivered continuous improvement in water use efficiency driven by operating discipline, implementation of water saving projects, using water on a fit for purpose basis including substitution from non-GAB sources, and risk management to prevent and mitigate water supply disruptions to Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs. Since the establishment of Olympic Dam, BHP Billiton has funded a reduction in GAB water flow from bores, previously going to waste, that is greater than the annual average flow used by Olympic Dam.

As a result of commissioning No.5 B F, 2670m3 inner volume, in March 1972, the largest B F in Australia; new expertise in maintenance, furnace operating practices and design have been obtained. This experience has also been extended to the other furnaces. A series of operating problems were con- fronted; all parts of the furnace, including the hearth side walls and bottom,were adversely affected. In December 1977, serious hearth wall wear was detected at No.5 B F, and a potential hearth breakout was averted. Hearth wear in No.4 B F was discovered in March 1979, and emer- gency underhearth cooling was installed to reverse an extremely advanced hearth bottom erosion. Hearth behaviour of No.5 B F oampaign 1972-1978 and`No.4 B F campaign commencing 1972, has been studied and discussions on the causes, effects and measures undertaken to protect the hearths are presented in this paper.

Three main genetic types of hematite can be recognised at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF): Micaceous or schistose hematite derived by metamorphic/metasomatic process during regional metamorphism, increasing eastward, formed under temperatures ranging from 250¦C to 500¦C in CO2-rich aqueous carbonic, high- to medium-salinity fluids. Hematite in shear and mylonite zones, showing a wide variation of fluid and temperature conditions, between metamorphic and hydrothermal conditions. Deformed quartz-specular hematite veins formed during the late phases. Hydrothermal, compact and isotropic hematite developed during a brittle-ductile regime, forming the cement of the boudinage-kink breccia and jacutinga-type of gold mineralisation, under temperatures ranging from 80¦C to 140¦C in aqueous, low- to medium salinity, oxidant fluids, resulting from the interaction of meteoric and metamorphic/metasomatic fluids. Quartz-carbonate-sulfide veins were formed slightly later, through reducing fluids.

Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

This paper deals with change strategies on brownfield and greenfield sites in extractive industries. It draws upon contemporary experiences across Australian, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). Change strategies can be used when owners of an extractive industry operation want to optimise their resource. This paper draws upon many tried and proven theories and practices, including the findings of the Tavistock Institute (Trist, Emmery, Bamford, Jaques), as well as the concepts of Adult Learning espoused by Malcolm Knowles and is supported by learnings of Australian based management consultants. This paper reviews a range of approaches that have succeeded in the integration of systems, machines and people, with the key corporate objectives of: increasing productivity; decreasing cost; improving on-time delivery performance and achieving long-term survival. Such integration needs to be measured to show the outcomes from the change strategies and the authors have worked within many measurement regimes and metrics but for the most part, found that JaquesÆ set of metrics being æquality, quantity, resources and timeÆ has gained currency across many Australian operations. This paper contends that investing money in machines alone without a commensurate investment into the people side is counter-productive. Further, if there is not an understanding of processes, ie stable and capable, core and support processes, then all that new technologies will do, is to make what is done badly, only quicker. Recent interventions for the most part, have been cognisant of this balanced approach towards change management. The change strategies described are across extractive industry implementations, using a number of tools and techniques drawn from Continuous Improvement and Six SigmaÖ (registered trade and service mark of Motorola Corporation, USA).

Methane predrainage from coal seams in the Western Area of the U.K. has been practiced over the past decade. The differing reasons for the practice include the controlling of gas emission rates in coal headings required to win out coal faces and also the need to control the gas emission rates in the roadways of retreat faces in order to comply with the statutory requirements. There are some similarities with predrainage experience in the Bulli Seam NSW. The several case studies highlight the varying conditions in the Western Area coalfield where the use of predrainage was Required.

The Junction Reefs gold bearing deposit is situated on the Lyndhurst Mining Field in mid-west New South Wales. It is located within a triangle of three country towns namely, Blayney, Cowra and Canowindra, all three townships are approximately 25 km from the current operational mining leases. The district is well developed, having been settled for more than a cen- tury. However, being close to the Cities of Orange and Bathurst it is real- lised, instantly, that mining leases have been pegged, in this area, almost boundary to boundary. The lease patterns are, with few exceptions, those which had been estab- lished more than seventy-five years ago. These types of lease patterns may not assist the proper exploitation of a large district where there have been many discoveries of gold, copper and other metals.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. The blast furnace is a counter current reactor. The counter current principle of the furnace makes it very efficient in transferring the heat and mass required to drive the reduction reactions inside the furnace. However, this does impose a stringent requirement on the permeability of burden material in the furnace. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous feeds used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, often accounting for ten to 20 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. As the lump ore descends through the blast furnace, it is dried, heated and reduced by the ascending hot reducing gas. To ensure good furnace permeability, generation of fines from burden materials including lump ore due to mechanical, thermal and chemical processes needs to be minimised. Unlike sinter and pellets, lump ore is subject to thermal degradation. To assess this behaviour of lump, the ISO decrepitation test (ISO 8371, 2007) is often conducted, and the result is calculated as a decrepitation index (DI). However, the DI values obtained from the existing ISO decrepitation test vary considerably between test portions and between laboratories, which makes meaningful comparison very difficult. In order to identify the sources responsible for the unacceptable repeatability, the effect of various testing conditions, such as particle size, heating rate, sample preparation and loading method, on the mean DI value was studied. Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited (RGC) and Consolidated Gold Fields Plc (CGF) purchased New Guinea Goldfields Limited (NGG) in 1982 as an exploration venture. Following an intensive drilling programme in the Upper Ridges area sufficient ore reserves were outlined to justify the installation of a new 700 tonnes of ore per day gravity gold extraction plant. Major considerations in the design of the new plant were to minimise production inter- ruptions in the existing plant and to include simple, but technically efficient, equipment that could be operated and maintained by a workforce with limited experience in modern technology. These goals were achieved over a six month period, commissioning being carried out in April, 1983. Mining the epithermal gold deposit is by open cut benching and truck haulage. The gravity concentrator includes a scrubber, wet hammer mill and rod mill, to crush, grind and prepare the ore for sizing and desliming. Gold recovery units consist of a jig, spirals, shaking tables and amalgam barrels. Although the majority of the gold is in the minus 100 plus 20 microns size fraction a recovery of 63 percent, from a head grade of 2.0g/tonne, is Achieved.

Hydro-economics is a field of research that analyses water resources from a multi-disciplinary approach (Harou et al., 2009). These models generally include one component that describes the water resources of the catchment being analysed (e.g. the physical behaviour of water), an economic component that describes users’ water demand function (changes of willingness to pay relative to availability) and a coupling methodology. These models go beyond calculating cash flows for water investments and analyse the economic behaviour of users when facing water shortages or surplus. In other words, water demand curves are defined for each water user (e.g. urban, agriculture, mining, environmental and hydropower), and they are used to retrofit the water resources component. As a result, the model approximates the catchment scale response to droughts and wet periods, including the effects of water markets, restrictions, recycling, water sharing and any cooperative efforts by users to adjust to changing climate conditions.These models are usually focused on agriculture and urban users, the main water consumers in most catchments, but they have sometimes included environmental, industrial and hydropower users (Bekchanov, Sood, & Jeuland, 2015). Nevertheless, although a relevant user of water in several catchments, the mining industry has been rarely included. This paper is part of an ongoing project that addresses this gap by developing a hydro-economic model in the upper section of the Aconcagua River in Chile.
