The ability of the Australian minerals industry to successfully manage the changes and challenges that face it in the 21st century depends ultimately on the quality of its human resources. Mining engineers have a vital role in this regard. The education and training that universities are currently giving to mining engineers is under challenge and needs to be reassessed in the light of industry directions for the 21st century. At one extreme is a push for a `finished product' graduate, up and running in `the flavour of the month' issues. At the other extreme are moves to reduce face-to-face university teaching hours and return to the time honoured university concept of `reading' for a degree. The lessons of Mourn make it apparent that neither approach is appropriate to the industry's future needs (Windridge, 1996). Basic knowledge gets rusty with time and new skills need to be learned. In order to conduct mining operations safely, productively and competitively, mining engineers must now accept the need to be prepared for continuing professional development as a career imperative. The concept of being professionally or statutorily qualified for life is no longer valid. This calls into question the purpose, content, structure and mode of delivery of university courses, all of which need to engender the principle and facilitate the cause of continuing professional development. This paper presents a model which aims to deliver a quality assured university education for mining engineers for the 21st century at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional level. The model extends beyond traditional university boundaries to match industry requirements to international best practice. It is based on collaborative alliances and innovative presentation modes which will provide industry access to undergraduate and postgraduate course elements presented by a broad range of national and international academic and industry authorities. It offers the prospect for preserving the best of university ideals in higher education, for developing and maintaining programs of direct relevance to industry needs and for a structured involvement in the continuing professional development of mining engineers.

Although the effects of sea level changes on ore concentration processes are to some extent obvious with certain deposits, e.g. beach placer deposits, they have been largely overlooked with others such as Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits. It is contended that sea level variations may have more profound effects on a wide range of deposits than has previously been appreciated. These deposits include not only placer'and residual deposits but also stratiform copper deposits, Mississippi Valley type deposits, stratiform manganese deposits and Minette type iron deposits. Sea levels in paralic basins profoundly affect the influx of 'detrital sediment, and this has to be suppressed to allow for the accumulation of thick rich deposits of coal evaporites, phosphate or metalliferous sediment. Emergence can be associated with oxidized waters, erosion, and,solution of soluble rocks. Submergence can reverse the Eh trend and can lead to preservation of ores. Both realms of surficial sedimentary environments and subsurface diagenetic environments can be affected by changes in water pressure, gas pressure (pC02), Eh, pH, and temperature as sea levels fluctuate. Even relatively small sea level changes may have profound effects. For example, there is some evidence to suggest that when the level dropped below 100 metres about 10,000 years ago, the Red Sea became isolated by the sill at Bab el Mandeb in the south, and evaporated away to leave a series of shallow lakes. The Red Sea is 1 to 2 km deep. It was at times such as this that the well-known copper-zinc mineralization developed in the Red Sea trough. Changes in sea level also affect the stability field of gas hydrates which can yield large volumes of gas leading to mass movements on the sea floor (Warnke, 1986).

Nine case studies are presented to illustrate how risks can be, minimised or quantified during pit optimisation, utilising Whittle Four-D software. Each case study covers a specific problem that has been encountered from a wide variety of pit optimisations. Case A: Maximising profits when the tenement owner is paid a royalty on tonnes processed. Case B: Allocating product prices, rather than a single commodity price during optimisation. Case C: Quantifying processing costs that are affected by penalty elements in the ore. Case D: Exploration expenditures below current pits can be quantified through the use of simulation techniques. Case E: Alternative strategies can be quantified when pits are restricted by tenement boundaries. Case F: Relocation of mine infrastructure that requires large capital expenditures, can be simulated by allocating costs to an area during optimisation. Case G: Evaluating alternative corporate strategies during pit optimisation. Case H: Sensitivity analysis for price, processing cost and mining cost. One common problem for blasting in iron ore mines with significant weathering is the occurrence of large blocks of hard rock mixed with softer material. This situation causes a problem for blasting design and sometimes produces large boulders of rock that require a secondary blasting, as well as excavation difficulties. To minimise this situation, geophysical techniques were used to identify the hardest material amid the weathered material. To study the problem, seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) methods were used in an intensely weathered Brazilian iron ore deposit. The methods of GPR combined with IP, resistivity and seismic showed to be effective in modelling the contrast among hard, friable materials and soil. The results were used to improve the geological model and create more favourable conditions for the subsequent blast design. The blast design based on geophysical/geological models resulted in significant improvement in the fragmentation of the iron ore. This was achieved by the adoption of a specific drilling pattern for a given geological situation. With the new specialised blasting design the formation of boulders was eliminated.CITATION:Vieira, L and Koppe, J C, 2015. In many cases, current metallurgical accounting practice does not consider the errors associated with the measurements used in obtaining the metal balance. Considering all measurement errors, including errors associated at each step of the process - from sampling and analytical errors to measurement errors in circuit instrumentation, can improve the accuracy of the final metal balance - assisting in the improvement of process performance, optimisation and control.The consequences of the inclusion of measurement errors on metal balance for different circuit configurations and typical metallurgical accounting practice (two product and three product formulae) will be discussed in this paper.Examples of the tools, methodology of implementation, and periodical metal balance tasks are presented to illustrate the advantage of this approach in meeting the different requirements of each department.CITATION:Brochot, S and Durance, M-V, 2012. Sampling criteria and practical implementation of these criteria are discussed with a view of achieving and maintaining a high level of quality for minerals at their various stages of production through to their utilisation. From this it will be shown the advantages that can be gained by producers who undertake stringent quality control programmes for their ores, thus ensuring they have a competitive edge over other producers.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.

In a previous study, various pyrite depressants were examined to improve the flotation performance of a copper-sulfide ore. Optimal results from this study were used to examine the effect of elevation on recovery and grade. Tests were conducted at elevations of 3350, 1735, 610 and -760 metres, consisted of five repetitive experiments for statistical analysis, and were performed both with and without airflow control. Tests were also performed in a glove box at Montana Tech to mimic the pressure conditions. Results indicate that both recovery and grade are dependent on pressure via bubble size and airflow suggesting that pressurised flotation cells should be considered for operations, particularly those at high elevation. Economics are extremely favourable for implementation because ensuing capital expenses are inconsequential with minimal time for return-on-investment.

The reasons for choosing autogenous grinding for the new Warrego concentrator of Peko Mines N.L. are discussed and the ores to be treated in the concentrator are described. The mill was designed on the basis of pilot tests carried out at Cobar and the performance of the mill has been most satisfactory both in its metallurgical and mechanical aspects. An empirical technique has been developed to predict mill performance for change in feed rate or feed size and a mathematical model of the mill is being developed for simulation and control work. The weight and size distribution of the mill load was determined at one set of operating conditions for use in the mill model.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

Optimum selection of explosives by means of monitoring explosive performance can lead to increased profitability through the control of fragmentation, a reduction in hangingwall and footwall damage and overall drill and blast costs. Studies conducted at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company underground copper mine evaluated in situ the performance of four explosive types. Measurements included monitoring the levels of induced shock energy and the attenuation thereof with distance. The velocity of detonation (VOD) of these explosives was also measured using in-hole techniques. Assessment of these results, together with a knowledge of the rock mass strength, facilitated the selection of an explosive that was best suited to the given rock mass conditions.

The competition between various options for the use of land is ever increasing. Commonly in Australia large tracts of land were un-encumbered by sweeping land use option limitations, but this situation has been rapidly altering in recent decades as governments are obliged to maximise the utility of the land for a broad range of competing interests. While the interests of miners have always been considered, the effects on limiting access to land for exploration and possible mining have not always been effectively incorporated into decision-making processes. As a result the challenge for national and state organisations representing these interests has been to develop a transparent process to allow for the mineral potential of an area to be systematically assessed and for information to be presented for use by specialists and non-specialists. Government agencies are called upon to implement government policy but also to provide accurate and meaningful advice which can assist in policy and land use decisions. Commonly timeframes are short and information can be less than complete. Nevertheless on-going decisions are made based upon the best available understanding. It is in this operational framework that the methods described in this paper are set. The paper describes a process for quickly and systematically providing advice on mineral potential for use by government agencies and ultimately the community within tight time and resource constraints. It is a method of combining the accumulated knowledge about mineral resources and their potential and presenting this information in an easily accessible form which can be used in a negotiation and policy development environment. Development of the method was undertaken to meet the needs of the Regional Forestry Agreement process in Australia. The method has been applied to study areas in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and elsewhere. Examples in this paper are taken from north eastern New South Wales.

Sulphur dioxide oxidation is an attractive alternative anodic reaction to the evolution of oxygen in copper electrowinning. Accordingly, the electrochemical oxidation of SO2 in aqueous 1.0 x 10-1 mol/L NaClO4 has been studied at pH 2.3 using platinum and glassy carbon electrodes. On the platinum electrode SO2 oxidation occurred on the forward scan at 0.96 V and on the reverse scan at 0.63 V. For GC, a single SO2 oxidation peak occurred at 1.40 V on the forward scan. SO2 oxidation on both electrode substrates was hampered by oxide layer formation. The electrode could be reactivated however, by oxide layer reduction. Although reactivation was most successful for platinum, SO2 oxidation on platinum is quite complex, with this evidenced by the reverse scan anodic peak. Glassy carbon shows simpler behaviour and thus, is the preferred substrate for SO2 oxidation.

The rocks of the Serranias Chilla massif of Bolivia are a suite of metamorphosed Palaeozoic basalts and associated continental sediments.
