A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

The formation of banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted high-grade iron ore deposits in the Hamersley Province, Australia has been debated for decades. Although a structural control on their formation is widely accepted, only the roles of large-scale structures (ie faults and folds) formed by brittle and ductile deformation have been considered to date. However, the deformation of multilayered sequences in the Hamersley Province (ie the Mount Bruce Supergroup), with their contrasting rheological behaviours, creates challenges for understanding the complex structural framework at regional to deposit scales, including the significance for mineralisation and orebody location.Our approach to understanding these complex relationships is based on an established principle of structural geology, which is to extrapolate microscale structures to deposit-scale structures and vice versa, supported by state-of-the-art 3D modelling techniques. Complexly deformed hand samples associated with the Mount Tom Price iron ore deposit (Hamersley Province, operated by Rio Tinto Ltd) have been analysed and visualised with 3D explicit (Move™, Midland Valley Ltd) and implicit modelling software packages (Leapfrog™, AranzGeo Ltd) and supported by microstructural investigations (optical and X-ray microscopy) and fieldwork.Our study shows that the deformation of BIFs in the central Hamersley Province is controlled by microscale chemical processes (ie dissolution precipitation creep) due to rheological differences between iron oxide and chert layers, contrasting fluid flow properties and layer thickness variations. These processes account for the removal of vast amounts of silica, its transportation by diffusion in the presence of a fluid and reprecipitation at low-pressure sites. ABSTRACT- I Results are given for a series of tests in which a 300 mm pilot-scale Jameson cell has been used in copper recleaner flotation, and for the flotation of a lead rougher feed. the results indicate that the production rate of solids, at the same superficial air velocity Jg, is higher than in conventional columns. Thus in the copper recleaner application, the pulling rate reached 14 gm/cm2/min compared with between two and three for an operating column, while in the lead cleaner application the comparable figures were 12 - 14 gm/cm2/min for the Jameson cell vs 8 - 9 gm/cm2/min for a test column. A froth crowder was used to increase the air superficial velocity Jg in the Jameson cell in the copper recleaner, while holding the collection mechanism and pulp feed rates constant. The recovery increased from 50 per cent to over 90 per cent, suggesting that recovery is controlled mainly by the froth conditions, rather than the particle-bubble interactions in the Downcomer.

In the field of mining engineering, design and planning are complex tasks, which require the knowledge of various engineering disciplines. GRUBE (Graphisch-RechnerUnterstiitzter BergwerksEntwurf) is a modular databased program system, which offers computer aid for all mining departments using a 3D CAD software as the user interface. Despite the data quantity and complexity, specific and uniform working conditions have to be applied to the planning of technical equipment of a pit. With the application of 3D graphics, complex data stores and their interrelations become 'palpable' for the user by suitable visualisation. GRUBE-M forms the mechanical operations module of GRUBE, in which underground locations displayed as three-dimensional graphic models are `equipped' interactively. Planning alternatives can be created and compared quickly in terms of technical calculations and economical analysis.

A brief history of the mineral sands industry is given from a radiation protection standpoint, with gamma radiation and inhalation of radioactive dust being identified as the main sources of radiation exposure of persons working in the plants. The principal sources of gamma radiation exposure are identified and the history of early bagging methods is discussed. The concept of ALARA is introduced and the impact of the "bulka bags" (and more effective monazite storage facilities) are detailed as illustrative examples of dose minimization, together with the requirements for the transport of monazite. The dose from radiation received from inhaled dust is dependent on a number of parameters of the dust, some of which are not well known. ICRP 30 (1978) makes recommendations relating to the intake of radionuclides by workers. These recommendations are discussed with respect to the inhalation of dust containing thorium. The possible pathways of radioactive material throughout the body are also described. The effect of having parameters that differ from ICRP 30 is discussed and suggestions are made relating to measurements that can be carried out to more accurately determine these parameters. Since in some instances the exposures to dust yield personal doses which may exceed the annual ICRP 30 based limits, it is necessary to define more accurately parameters of the dust so as to determine more accurately personal Doses.

Good mining is central to any approach to value tracking. Good mining occurs where the ore is correctly delineated, measured and fed to the mill. This process is usually referred to as grade control, ore control or quality control. There are now ways to measure the efficiency of this process, such as by using conditional simulation, and a brief synopsis is presented. Resource estimation is the foundation of ore reserve estimation, which should enable useful prediction of the expected metal to be recovered from mining and milling. Significant improvements have resulted from applying new techniques such as the Chain of Mining (CoM) method, which models the mining process. Again, a brief synopsis is presented. Tracking value from the mine through the mill implies a linear sequence of processes that can be modelled. Reality is more complex and there are error components, feedback loops and breaks in the Chain of Value. Modelling the total production process in a number of operations is considered, including the various impacts on producing reconciliations. Procedures are also discussed for handling a number of difficult issues such as: different data supports, stockpiling strategies, blending from multiple ore sources, blast movement and underground ore extraction.

A study of two laterite profiles developed on a serpentinite near Rockhampton, shows that loss of Si02 and MgO results in the relative concentration of Fe203, A1203 and a number of minor elements. Serpentine is broken down to form montmorillonite, goethite, quartz and kaolinite. Enrichment of nickel occurs, and it is shown that the element is mainly associated with montmorillonite and serpentine. It is well known that in most areas of Central Europe it is not difficult to find water - usually at shallow depths - and to recover and use this water. What is much more difficult, however, is to find water sources that offer both sufficient in quantity and qual- ity. Far too often, there are sources that offer abundant quantities but of poor quality or vice versa, i.e. high quality water but insufficient volumes. In the former case where water quality is not adequate - which is more often than not due to anthropogenic factors and only very rarely a result of geogenic effects - the application of treatment techniques can help to turn such water into potable water that is suitable for human con sumption.

Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. The author presents various procedures for the choice of dri-ving systems for mining, including the method of indeterminate Lagrange factors and linear programming.The possible application of the points-awarding method is demonstrated.It allows for taking into account both surd and commensurable characteristics of a driving system for mining. Organisations’ incident classification processes are plagued by the overclassification of events, often leading to excessive workloads and suboptimal outcomes. This presentation addresses the pressing need to rethink how incidents are classified to maximise organisational learning and minimise systemic risk. A major issue in the current incident classification landscape is the tendency to classify events at high levels, overwhelming organisations with investigations they cannot efficiently handle. This results in inadequate risk reduction and learning opportunities. The link between injury classification and investigation methods further compounds these problems, creating unnecessary administrative clutter. Challenging the misconception that every event, no matter how minor, requires a comprehensive investigation, this presentation advocates for a shift in perspective. The key recommendation is to decouple injury classification and risk matrices from the decision-making process regarding what and how to investigate. Instead, the emphasis should be placed on identifying opportunities for organisational learning and risk reduction. Organisations can streamline their incident management processes by adopting a more pragmatic approach that aligns incident classification with the organisation’s investigation capacity. This transformation focuses on achieving meaningful outcomes, enhancing safety and improving performance. This presentation provides an innovative process for organisations to revamp their incident classification practices, enabling them to harness the full potential of incident data for learning and risk mitigation. It highlights the importance of aligning incident classification with the opportunity for organisational learning, ultimately leading to more effective incident management and enhanced safety outcomes.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

The Rise & Shine Shear Zone is a shallow-dipping Cretaceous late metamorphic shear zone formed in a compressional environment. The Shotover mineralised system is dominated by normal faults with well-defined vein systems that cut across Miocene schist folds and faults related to the inception of the Alpine Fault. Despite the geological differences between these mineralisation systems, they share many common features of hydrothermal alteration that have resulted in disseminated gold in altered sheared schist. The most distinctive feature of both systems is the abundant ankeritic carbonate that has formed from decomposition of metamorphic chlorite. Excess iron from this alteration reaction combined with hydrothermal sulphur to form sulphides that host the disseminated gold. The chlorite decomposition reaction was reversed in the latter stages of both mineralisation systems, and this was accompanied by further gold emplacement in the Rise & Shine system.   Both alteration systems involved initial decomposition of metamorphic albite, followed by deposition of albite as a vein mineral in the latter stages. The fluid flow that yielded the disseminated gold was controlled by microshears that pervade host schists, in strong contrast to many Otago Schist vein systems where host rock alteration is absent. The ankeritic alteration in the Shotover and Rise & Shine mineralised systems has increased the volume of mineralised rock, and may have made suitable targets for large-tonnage, low grade gold deposits.

The Energy Authority of NSW has wide powers and responsibilities conferred by its Act which are pertinent to the State's coal industry and its development into the next century. With respect to coal, the broad objective is to maximise the benefits to NSW and its people derived from the State's coal resources. The initial focus of the Authority's coal-related activities in the late 70's and early 80's was on petroleum substitutes from coal. Research was supported, especially on hydrogenation, and the Authority participated in the Joint Australia/Federal Republic of Germany coal-to-oil feasibility study. It also co-ordinated a State Government initiative to involve the private sector in examining the possible establishment of a synthetic fuels industry based on Hunter Valley coal. With a short-fall in world-wide petroleum supply now seen as less likely for some years, the Authority is looking also at ways of working towards the broad objective in the field of coal utilisation on both domestic and export markets. Areas of interest include possibilities for using washery rejects, means of making NSW coal more competitive as an energy source, use of coal-seam gas and new or special technologies for burning coal. The future is expected to see renewed interest in producing petroleum substitutes, and coal - as the State's major energy resource - is seen as a strong contender as a basis for such an industry. Developments in coal-based power generation are also expected to have an impact, with advanced technologies having a possible place here as well as Overseas.

Spiral separators have been used to treat heavy mineral sands in Australia for some thirty-five years. They were used as the primary treatment method until the advent of the Reichert cone, which largely replaced them, due to its compact design and relative ease of operation. Spirals continued-to be used as the final cleaning stage before dry separation of the heavy minerals as they remained the most efficient separator for this purpose.

Three ores (sulfidic, oxidized and carbonaceous) were analyzed to determine the effects of leaching time, ore depth, and ore mineralogy on cyanide species concentration. NaCN solutions were percolated through opaque columns filled with milled ore. Column design made liquid sample collection possible from various depths at specific times. The concentrations of weak acid dissociable(WAD) and total cyanide, Fe(CN)63 , Fe(CN)64 , SCN , and Cu(CN)43 were determined for each sample. Extended percolation time led to increases in WAD cyanide concentra- tions and decreased SCN and Cu(CN)43 concentrations regardless of ore depth. WAD cyanide concentration decreased while Fe(CN)64 concentra- tion increased with ore depth. Highest concentrations of Fe(CN)64- SCN and Cu(CN)43 were found in the sulfidic ore, with expected low WAD cyanide concentrations.
