Boliden's Aitik open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand yearly production from 18 to 36 Mt of copper ore during 2010. The expansion includes a new concentrator located 3 km off the pit, two new apron feeder crushers connected to the ore storages and concentrator with conveyors at a total length of 7 km. The concentrator has two lines with autogenous grinding mills and flotation each with a capacity of 18 Mt. Consequently the mine operation has to be expanded. To achieve this, there was several parallel processes ongoing; investments in new equipment, reorganisations, improvement projects in maintenance and productivity. The Aitik 72 project was started to coordinate productivity and mine planning activities. Initially the long-term strategic mine plan called for a total movement of ore and waste to increase from 40 to 72 Mt but has today increased to 89 Mt. Productivity projects have been focused on load and haul activities such as fuel economics (Renstr÷m, 2007), effective utilisation of trucks partly by increasing manning levels, improved dispatch and shovel utilisation focusing on optimal use of loader/truck fleets. The eco-driving projects previously reported have reduced fuel consumption significantly. This project is also a productivity project, as part of the fuel savings comes from minimising idle engine hours due to queues, break-downs, operator shift changes, etc but also from under and overloading. Effective use of truck fleets, ie transport of material, loading and dumping, thus excluding non-productive engine hours has been an essential motivator when deciding the size and number of new trucks required. This has resulted in a reduction of the investment with at least one but maybe two trucks. A third major project was to optimise shovels together with truck fleet by improving short-term, up to two weeks, detailed planning of drilling and shovel activities. Daily scheduled breaks for maintenance as well as planning of shovel utilisation, down to shift level are included in the production plans. KPIs and online production reports, based on real-time monitoring of drill rigs, shovels and trucks, have been an essential tool used regularly to engage and motivate mine production personal and information reporting to management. Several projects have already reached their goals. The projects will continue throughout 2010 to ensure that productivity targets are met.

Kidston Gold Mines, located in semi-arid North Queensland, Australia is currently in its closure phase. Highly innovative and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies were employed at the site, including the direct revegetation of the surface of the tailings storage; the construction of a tailings sediment entrapment pond; the construction of a spillway to drain large rainfall events from the surface of the tailings; the construction of store/release covers over the tops of the waste rock dumps; the sheeting with oxide waste rock of the waste rock dump slopes; the partial back-filling of the initial Wises Hill Pit with waste rock and thickened tailings produced from the subsequent Eldridge Pit; the partial flooding of Eldridge Pit following the end of mining; and the construction of wetland systems to treat contaminated tailings and waste rock dump seepage. These closure strategies involved the careful consideration of water management. Specific water management issues included understanding the water balance of the tailings dam; the operation of the tailings dam sediment entrapment pond and spillway; understanding the water balance of the store/release waste rock dump covers; the importance and sustainability of vegetation on the tailings, store/release waste rock dump covers, and on the sheeted waste rock dump slopes; the level and quality of water in the partially flooded Eldridge Pit; and the treatment of contaminated seepage in the constructed wetlands. The seasonal and highly variable rainfall experienced in this semi-arid climate posed a number of challenges for the management of water on the site post-closure. The paper details these challenges and highlights how they were resolved over the period leading up to and following the end of mining.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options. Narrow vein gold mineralisation generally contains both fine (<100 ¦m) and coarse (>100 ¦m) gold particles. The in situ size and shape, deportment, distribution and abundance of the particles controls deposit sampling characteristics, grade distribution and metallurgical properties. Particles can range from individual disseminated grains, clusters of particles and masses above 1 cm in size. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for very coarse particles. Deposits generally show a background grade of mineralisation dominated by disseminated fine gold particles. Drilling will resolve the background grade well, though is likely to considerably understate the grade related to the coarser gold particles. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on metallurgy, with key factors affecting recovery being particle size, deportment, liberation parameters and silver content of gold minerals. For coarse gold particles the focus should be on liberation and the early removal of the particles from the mill circuit by gravity concentrators and gold traps. Finer particles will require more grinding to liberate prior to flotation or cyanide extraction. The determination of gold particle sizing is thus required to minimise evaluation and geometallurgical uncertainty and lower project risk.

A review of the most widely used global extraction sequences in sublevel is undertaken. The review includes techniques used to extract massive as well as single or multiple steeply dipping tabular orebodies. The paper also deals with thick flat lying orebodies suitable for open stoping. Techniques used to minimise the effect of stress redistributions on a global scale are discussed for all the extraction sequences analysed.

Traditional methods for the production of transition metals from their ores usually include the electric arc smelting of the ore or concentrate to produce a ferroalloy. This is subsequently refined to produce either a ferroalloy or to produce the metal or metallic carbide. Recent trends in the treatment of iron ores have seen the development of many processes for solid state carbothermic reduction followed by melting of the prereduced iron to produce steel and similar types of processes are under consideration for the production of ferroalloys. There are clear potential savings in energy and control of emissions from such processes. This paper discusses some research which is currently underway at La Trobe University into the solid state carbothermic reduction of chromium and tungsten ores to produce the metallic ferroalloy or the carbide for subsequent further processing. The kinetics of the carbothermic reduction of both chromite and scheelite were found to be dominated by gaseous CO rather than by direct carbon reduction. However the diffusion of carbon into the ore is certainly an important feature of the process. The production of tungsten carbide from the metal is the slow step in tungsten reduction. The development of phases during reduction were studied using a scanning electron microscope and an electron probe and knowledge of the phases produced allows analysis of the reduction process.

With the advent of Computer aided mapping and surface modelling techniques Geologists and Engineers have had to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of these systems to effectively use them. In this paper we will trace a short history of the rather rapid progress in this area. From this historical perspective we will make some observations and use these to guess at what the future holds. We hope that this paper will assist in clarifying the develop- ments in computer assisted mapping and modelling and promote thought on how these techniques may be best applied to the problems of the Mineral Industry.

Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. The Jundee gold mining operation is located in the Western Australian Yandal Greenstone belt. Jundee is a mature operation encompassing multiple and complex underground ore resources, dwindling open pit reserves, large surface stockpiles, small satellite resources and two near-mine but stand alone process plants. The imminent completion of continuous open pit mining and the associated drop-off in total mill feed precipitated a review of the strategic mine plan and development of options that would optimise the exploitation of the remaining mineral resources and the utilisation of the existing plant and infrastructure.An initial review of the strategic decisions to be made, available options as well as the quantity, complexity and co-dependency of the strategic variables quickly led to the conclusion that an Operations Research style modelling approach would be appropriate. An 'off-the-shelf' program engine by the name of WHATSBEST! (LINDO Systems Inc.) was chosen on the basis of price, reputation and ease of use. The model was formulated with the unknown variables (being the ore mining rates) expressed as a proportion of the maximum achievable ore mining rate from each source. Costs were defined as variable or fixed, with this definition being a key aspect of the modelling process. The critical application of the model was in determining the optimal extraction rate of ore, the destination (ie Jundee or Nimary mill) and the sequence of extraction of each ore source that maximized the cash flow of the operation. The program was designed to be able to quickly derive an optimal result from the many variables, replacing the previous laborious iterative process of arriving at an acceptable answer by means of several large and static spreadsheet models. This paper presents the process of selection, formulation, application and scope of operation of the turn-key linear and non-linear program strategic model now used as part of the Jundee Operation strategic decision making process.

Mines are often located in remote areas that are not well served by æstiffÆ power grids. Radial transmission networks, high lightning incidence (eg in South Africa the Witwatersrand experiences seven to ten strikes/km2 per year), low short circuit strengths and diesel generation are not uncommon. All these factors result in the electric power supply to many mines being unusually prone to dips and disturbances. æLegacyÆ winder drives û cyclo converters and dc drives û convert power directly from the supply to the motor, with no intermediate energy storage element. Further, they rely on the supply network for commutation and are therefore sensitive to supply voltage disturbances. There is a high probability that a dc or cyclo mine winder will trip during a supply disturbance, often resulting in lost production time and call-outs for technical staff to reset or even repair equipment. In contrast, a voltage source inverter (VSI) ac drive stores a large quantity of energy (in the dc link capacitors) and is fully self-commutating. Hence, this topology is inherently more immune to supply voltage disturbances. Indeed, vendors of ac VSI mine winders make general statements about the superior performance of their drives during supply disturbances. However, the advantages have apparently not been previously quantified. This paper compares different winder drive topologies and their sensitivity to supply disturbances, considers categories of supply disturbances and quantifies the cost of the effects on the different drive types.

A methodology for the fatigue life estimation of load haul dumpers, employed in underground platinum mines, has been developed and applied. This method entails the quantification of operating conditions by means of stress measurements. The measurements are then translated into a fatigue loading factor for a finite element model. The results of this analysis are then used to compare all the critical connections in the structure to detail categories in relevant fatigue codes, and predict a life in operating hours for the vehicle structure. The method was applied on a specific model and the results of this analysis were compared to actual failure occurrences with reasonable accuracy. It is intended that the methodology be embedded into performance specifications and purchasing contracts and that technology transfer to OEMs be achieved. Based on the experience of this project and other similar exercises it is estimated that structural life expectancies may be increased across a typical fleet of trackless mining vehicles (LHDs, drill rigs, utility vehicles, dump trucks) by at least 20 per cent.

Recent studies carried out to support the development of a strategy for the New Zealand mineral industry by the NZ Minerals Industry Association have included investigations of mineral potential, and the development of scenarios for realising this countryÆs mineral potential by 2010. New economic research is applying a general equilibrium model to quantify the opportunity cost of this potential. The model analyses separately four categories of land (private land and three categories of Crown land) and identifies four distinct mineral classes û precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and aggregate. It investigates the economic effect of the increased availability of mineral resources on the mining industry itself, on other industry sectors and on the NZ economy generally, including its impact on unemployment, GDP and household welfare.The analyses suggest that increases in the level of GDP of between 1.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent may be obtained by utilising New ZealandÆs mineral wealth to varying degrees. The mineral industry sectors are significant beneficiaries under all scenarios; mineral output increases by between two and five times its current level. However, the flow-on effects to the rest of the economy, and to households, are also significant. The analyses show that household income, adjusted for changes in consumer prices, can be expected to increase by between 1.6 per cent and 2.7 per cent. This results largely from increased employment.

The resource estimation of lateritic deposits, such as Aurukun, presents specific issues related to the lateral changes in thickness and elevation of the various horizontal layers (or zones) within the deposit where the x and y dimensions are orders of magnitude greater than the z dimension. The objective was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) block model that retained the vertical and lateral variation inherent in deposits of this type to allow full optimisation of the production plan without prior selection of an economic portion (enriched bauxite layers) of the profile at the resource estimation stage. The Aurukun bauxite deposit is held by Chalco Australia Pty Ltd (Chalco) and forms part of the world-class Weipa bauxite province, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The bauxite is predominantly pisolitic with an upper boehmite-rich zone and lower gibbsite-rich zone. The bauxite consists of both in situ and reworked domains, is overlain by a thin soil horizon and has kaolinite clay as a transitional base. A portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was utilised on site, in addition to elemental assay, on each drill sample to determine the mineralogy, in particular levels of boehmite, gibbsite, kaolinite and reactive silica. As part of the scope of work, a field program was undertaken using large diameter Boart Longyear sonic drilling to acquire detailed density measurements across the deposit to allow compliance with Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) reporting requirements. Interpretation of the stratigraphy was conducted on a hole by hole basis with definition of the zone layering based on stratigraphy, geochemistry and mineralogy. The zone boundaries were then modelled as 3D surfaces and used to constrain a block model. The block model estimation used the ordinary kriging method, with the estimation done in unfolded space and then refolded, therefore maintaining the zones irrespective of thickness or orientation. The unfolding process converts the real-world positions for both blocks and informing samples to a scaled position relative to the roof and floor of each zone. Analysis of the data and variography were also undertaken in unfolded space. The x and y dimensions are unchanged, but the z dimension is a relative position. The effect of the unfolding and limits on number of samples per hole is to æpushÆ the informing sample search sideways but within the stratification, rather than vertically. This honours the strong vertical zonation within the bauxite profile. The JORC Code requires that the stated resource must have æreasonable prospects for economic extractionÆ. This is a qualitative rather than quantitative definition. A number of selection criteria to define a resource roof and floor were developed in consultation with the project engineers and owners to meet these criteria. The vertical selection of material to include in the resource highlights the variation in the development (and destruction) of the bauxite profile from area to area within the deposit.

The importance of proper planning, preparation, and execution of a steady state sampling campaign for metallurgical plant assessment must not be underestimated. Careful planning can increase the amount and reliability of information from an optimum number of samples and fully utilize available plant data. It requires specification of the data required, determination of run duration sampling frequency, the selection, modification and testing of sample points and cutters, as well as organisation and briefing of plant and sampling personnel. Preparation immediately prior to sampling, the conduct of the sampling campaign itself and procedures to handle the collected samples and information are discussed. Cutter design, fabrication and use are described in detail, and typical sampling situations, for ball mills, classifiers, pipes, launders, flotation cells and thickeners are considered individually. Measurement of pulp flow rate can often resolve difficult mass balance problems, and discussion of convenient techniques is included.

Planning for flooding and assessment of flood impacts are important requirements for mining projects, as they are also for other types of development. With more intense development and concern from the community, supported by government regulatory requirements, assessment of flood concerns and impacts has become of increasing importance. To ensure that flooding issues are fully understood and results presented in an appropriate format, advanced hydraulic analysis procedures have been developed and are beginning to be applied. These procedures must be rigorous in an engineering context but the results must also be readily understood by the community and government agencies. Advanced two-dimensional hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as an important means of assessing flooding issues for mining projects. With presentation of results from hydraulic models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), flood impacts can be analysed rigorously and presented clearly. This paper discusses the application of advanced hydraulic modelling in the planning and impact assessment of a major mining project located on a floodplain where there is extensive inundation. The analysis provides for both input to the planning of the project and for detailed assessment of potential impacts. This case study illustrates some important aspects of the application of hydraulic modelling using a two-dimensional modelling to a critical flood design.

It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

It has been said on many occasions that æthe future of the mining industry of Australia, and indeed the world, lies in the hands of the studentsÆ. As a student, this can be a daunting, yet very exciting, statement. If nothing else, it is a direct challenge to the student body of the mining industry to take responsibility for its direction æafter 2000Æ. However, for the students to embrace this challenge, some responsibility must be borne by the universities and the industry itself to provide some direction and encouragement. Perhaps, therefore, the real challenge is to find the right balance between students, industry and education to best prepare the students for a career in the mining industry. The future industry will demand students who are capable and willing to adapt to change and technology and able to exert the vision and leadership required to ensure the mining industry continues to thrive well into the next century.

Downhole survey uncertainties observed at various De Beers operations prompted an investigation into their possible effect on deposit shape and volume. An accurately surveyed artificial æboreholeÆ was constructed and different downhole survey instruments tested. In this way an empirically determined error range of 0.1 per cent to ten per cent was derived for downhole survey data. These survey errors were applied to an orebody model at an existing mine. Visualising the sphere of uncertainty associated with a borehole trace using a general mining package (GMP) gives an indication of possible volume variance. The resulting orebody maximum and minimum volume scenarios for three different depths (200 m, 500 m and 800 m) are presented. For certain instruments and borehole angles, the 3D positional error can be as high as 100 m at 1000 m down the hole. At depths below 200 m the resulting volume deviations can become significant for borehole survey errors exceeding 0.35 per cent. At 800 m depth the volume difference can approach 25 per cent. These figures assume that the error is compounded. The impact of these downhole survey errors is greatest for pipe-like orebodies such as porphyries and kimberlite pipes. Subhorizontal sill-like orebodies (and coal seams) will not be significantly affected by these errors. The impact of this type of survey error needs to be stated (and quantified) and is significant in JORC classification.

A general review of grinding mill steel liner evolutions/developments in recent times. The driving force behind these developments has been the mill operators desire to minimise the nett cost of their operation. These developments have resulted from a team approach between supplier, operators and reline crews. The move towards larger diameter high aspect mills, faster mill speeds, pebble ports and the use of large diameter grinding media has affected the traditional liner designs, which is placing higher demands on the supplier to meet these new working parameters and expectations. Operators are also taking closer ownership in the liners being supplied, as demonstrated by the development of their own mill liner specifications. This paper outlines some of liner developments and changes undergone at various milling operations around Australia and overseas (such as Cadia Hill, Kidston, Ok Tedi Mining, PT Freeport, etc) and where to in the future?
