Oroya Mining LimitedÆs Mt Gibson Gold Project, 280 km north east of Perth, is one of Western AustraliaÆs more recent discoveries of a major gold resource. Modern gold mining commenced in 1986, on a shallow laterite reserve of 6.62 million tonnes averaging 1.50 g/t gold. By the end of 1998, mining had progressed from an initial three shallow laterite pits to a series of 14 open pits with maximum depth of 100 m, on three separate trends with a combined strike length of over 10 km. The Project has yielded 868 400 ounces of gold from 16.5 million tonnes of ore at an average recovered grade of 1.64 g/t gold, from near surface laterite, supergene and primary sulfide ores. This includes a 160 m deep underground decline operation which mined 120 000 tonnes at an average grade of 9.1 g/t gold and a four million tonne Dump Leach on a synthetic base which yielded 68 900 ounces. The Project was placed on Care and Maintenance in 1999 pending drilling to refresh reserves. Hosted by strongly tectonised and altered Archaean volcanic rocks within and adjacent to a major regional shear, primary gold mineralisation occurs as structurally emplaced sulfide and quartz lodes. On the main Gibson Trend, multiple zones of mineralisation occur within a zone up to 600 m in overall width. The overall footprint of known mineralisation exceeds 20 km2 and the potentially mineralised domain exceeds 100 km2. The current estimate of a combined resource of 9.4 million tonnes averaging 2.47 g/t gold (749 500 ounces) is derived from a database of 10 500 drill holes, of which only four per cent test below 100 m vertical depth. Ore envelopes which remain open at depth and major gaps in the drilling pattern beyond the currently defined resources promise straightforward potential to define additional resources. Oroya Mining Limited and its joint venture partner Barrick Australia are targeting a major gold mining operation from this potentially world-class mineralised system. Oroya has the exclusive right to produce up to 500 000 ounces and is working toward the completion of a feasibility study into a resumption of mining using the existing 1986-built 1 Mtpa processing plant. The joint venture is in the early stages of testing the depth and lateral potential of the Mt Gibson mineralised system. Mining options currently under review include progressive open pit extension and amalgamation leading to one or more large open pits, and underground operations. It is too early in the development of the Project to offer definitive economic models of potential large-scale mining operations.

In the last two decades three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have become an important tool in engineering sciences. More recently, the safety requirements in underground railway stations have increased with regard to incidents. For this reason, existing underground stations (eg Munich, Strasbourg and Berlin) are being equipped with smoke extraction facilities to protect passengers from smoke and visibility impairment in the event of fire. In addition, designs of planned underground stations (eg Karlsruhe, Doha) also include these facilities.For the commissioning of ventilation engineering systems with complex structures, the functional testing of the whole technical installation are important, as are the acceptance tests of ventilation and equipment parts. This functional testing includes not only the technical inspection of the equipment but also the acceptance measurements of the capability of the equipment and the execution of hot- or cold-smoke tests to confirm the effectiveness of the ventilation system.Due to the fact that the overhead contact line and other sensitive installations were already installed in the tunnel roof at the time that smoke tests were proposed, hot-smoke tests with fire loads up to a maximum of 1 MW could only be executed. Therefore, the evidence of the attainability of the safety objective had to be provided computationally in this special case with a fire scenario of a heat release of 10 MW using CFD simulations.This paper presents the interplay between the results from acceptance testing and smoke tests and the use of 3D CFD simulation and virtual reality using the example of Allmend station, which was repositioned underground and is part of a new section of track from Lucerne railway station to Kriens in the Zentralbahn network. The process of desilverising by fractional crystallisation with reflux was investigated through laboratory batch tests and continuous laboratory bench scale tests at CSIRO Clayton, to a 300 kg/hr pilot plant at Port Pine. The pilot plant built at BHAS comprised a vertical cylindrical refining column with internal diameter 250 mm and height 3.2 m, attached at the top to an off-set cylindrical stirred crystalliser tank. Crystals were made in the crystalliser by intermittent immersion of steel cold fingers, which were water cooled between immersions. Gas heat was used for melting the crystals at the base of the column and for side compensation heating. A computerised in strumentation system was employed for data logging and for controlling some critical plant operations. A mechanical device was first employed to promote counter-current plug flow of crystals down the column against the rising stream of reflux liquid, but this was found to be unsatisfactory owing to excess noise, frequent mechanical failure, and excessive accumulation of dross. Plug flow was finally promoted by pulsing the column. Low silver levels, less than 1 gitonne, were achieved with both methods of crystal transport under total reflux conditions. The pulsed column gave results for silver and bismuth which agreed with the theoretical predictions of a computer model, but there was some selective drossing of antimony. In the mechanically agitated column, excessive drossing promoted selective removal of most of the antimony and some of the bismuth, and the results after extended operation were well removed from the theoretical predictions. Plant failures and operating problems prevented the achievement of satisfactory product quality with the necessary reliability under production conditions. Other priorities necessitated the termination of the project before the process could be optimised.

Historically, most investigations of biogeochemical cycling in acid rock drainage systems involved synoptic sampling over longer time periods (one sample per week or month) or intensive time series studies over a few hours or days. However, many important episodic loading events, such as seasonal meltwater and storm events occur on timescales that are rarely observed by these traditional sampling approaches. Monitoring these transient processes, which may contribute the bulk of the annual metal loading, is essential for accurate assessment in acid rock drainage areas. Recent work also has demonstrated dramatic diel (24 hour cycle) variations in trace metal concentrations in response to diel changes in temperature, pH, oxygen, and photochemical cycling (Brick and Moore, 1996; Nimick et al, in prep). To characterise a system that may respond to diel, seasonal, and episodic events, a monitoring program must sample at a frequency that captures the details of these major forcing events. We developed two novel instruments, the Zn-DigiScan and the DigiSampler to examine low and high frequency temporal changes in acid rock drainage areas. The Zn-DigiScan is a battery powered real time in situ chemical analyser designed for long-term deployments with hourly analyses of Zn. Stream physical parameters (temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, etc) were measured every 15 minutes with a water quality sonde. The DigiSampler was developed for the long-term daily sampling of biogeochemically active elements and can take either discrete samples or samples integrated over 24 hours. The DigiSampler collects 2 ml samples in a Teflon coil which are separated by 0.2 ml nitrogen bubbles. The sample coil is returned to lab and the 2 ml samples are diluted 1:10 and analysed for trace metals by ICP-MS. Initial results from a three-day deployment at Fisher Creek, MT, USA have successfully demonstrated the ability of the Zn-DigiScan to record Zn concentrations at levels below 100 ¦g/L. Zinc concentrations measured at 30 minute intervals in Fisher Creek showed a diel cycle with low values of ~25 ¦g/L in the late afternoon and increasing to ~60 ¦g/L by early morning. Zn concentrations were inversely related to temperature and pH, suggesting that temperature and pH dependent adsorption was the main factor controlling diel Zn fluctuations. Initial deployment of the DigiSampler also was successful, revealing diel cycles in Zn, Cu, and Mn. Comparison of trace metal samples collected by the DigiSampler showed good agreement with samples collected by an Isco automated water sampler, demonstrating that the DigiSampler can collect clean samples for trace metal analysis at the low ¦g/L range.

Some mqre facts and inferences are presented in amplification of a recent paper on the geology of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile stressing the volcanic origin of its rich gold ores, some of which are considered tobe exhalites. Previously unpublished and largely unmapped pyroclastic features in carbonated and chloritized, but not in amphibolitic, country rock are brought to attention. This applies particularly to the main host, viz. the relatively coarse-grained quartz dolerite greenstone (Q. D. G.), i.e. Golden Mile Dolerite, and gives more credibility to the spatial association of the rich Green Leader and telluride ores with bodies of sediments and tuffites occurring within, or adjacent to, Q. D. G. There may be an intrusive relationship with contiguous mafic amphibolites of doleritic origin, but this is not certain and can only be resolved by morecomprehensive mapping than in the past. Volcanic features have always been recognized in CalC Schist, i.e. Paringa Basalt, more so recently in the shape of coarse volcanic breccia.Iu the subsequent deformation of the gold ores since their inital emplacement there appears to be a structural parallel with some Canadian base-metal deposits, most of them of volcanogenic origin.

While sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. It is often left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Yet sampling and sample processing are of vital importance. There is little point in making major capital investments in the latest analytical equipment and spending considerable time obtaining the best analytical precision, if the sample provided for analysis is seriously biased in the first place.

Many hydrometallurgical and chemical processes produce large amounts of acid waste. This is illustrated by the copper S/X-E/W process used at the Mount Gordon mine in North Queensland, which produces a tank house bleed in the form of a concentrated sulphuric acid stream. The bleed stream is necessary to remove impurities such as iron that decrease the efficiency of the electrowinning process. However, this bleed stream comes at a high financial cost due to large quantities of make up sulphuric acid required as well as the need to neutralise the bleed stream prior to disposal. The present work describes the approach taken to develop a solvent extraction process for the selective recovery of sulphuric acid from copper tank house bleed liquor. The proposed extraction system was investigated using a branched long chain aliphatic tertiary amine tris(2-ethylhexyl)amine (TEHA) as the extractant, Shellsol 2046 as the diluent and octanol as a modifier. Computer simulations were used to determine the optimum operating conditions for the recovery process. It was found that the process was able to selectively recover up to 90 per cent of the sulphuric acid from the copper electrolyte. This is recovered as a pure aqueous acid stream at a concentration of up to 130 g/L that can be recycled back into the tank house circuit or other areas of the process. The raffinate acid concentration was reduced from 180 g/L to as low as 18 g/L, significantly reducing waste disposal and the environmental impact of the copper process. The equilibrium data and simulation results were also compared with an alternative extractant, CYANEXR 923. Finally the efficiency of the TEHA extraction system was investigated on a pilot-scale in a pulsed perforated plate column. This information was used in order to scale the process for an industrial application. The same methodology applied in this case study could be used to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions to waste streams encountered in other hydrometallurgical or chemical processes.

In common with several great orebodies and mineral camps around the world Broken Hill has been the subject of state-of-the-art technical and scientific scrutiny during its long working life. During the early years geological interest in Broken Hill tended to be directed at the body for its intrinsic scientific worth, mainly on account of its large size, high grade and wealth of mineral species. For much of the last 60 years the interest has had a more applied motivation, namely, to assist the search for either repetitions in the Broken Hill field or analogues in other terrains. This paper looks at the major changes in geological concepts and exploration techniques applied at Broken Hill and attempts to assess their impact.

The Lochiel Deposit is a large occurrence of soft brown coal about 130 km north of Adelaide. The deposit is undergoing continued evalua- tion of which an integral part was the excavation of a Trial Pit. The Trial Pit was deemed necessary to demonstrate that the deposit may be mined efficiently by draglines and the particular emphasis was on the geotech- nical and hydrogeological aspects of what may be termed difficult mining conditions. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was commenced in September 1986. After considerable planning and excavation was successfully completed in May 1987. The project is unique in terms of its size and technical com- plexity. It entailed excavation of over 230,000 m3 of overburden to an overall depth of 36 metres. The excavated material was utilised for experimentation in a Trial Dump. Included in the Trial Pit design were several novel techniques includ- ing depressurisation drains to improve mining conditions in soil strength materials and the use of vacuum to aid dewatering.

Acid generating sulfidic tailings covering a surface area of approximately ten hectares have been deposited in the historic mining area of Lavrion in Greece. For the development of a remediation strategy, the performance of three alternative acid generation control techniques was assessed under actual field conditions. The techniques involved the application of dry covers, including a synthetic HDPE liner and a compacted clay layer with capillary barriers. Furthermore, the potential formation of a low permeability hardpan layer at the sulfidic tailings surface by limestone addition was investigated. The field tests covered an area of 2500 m2, which was divided in equal quadrants, corresponding to the control plot and the three alternative remedial options. To monitor the amount and quality of percolated water, lysimeters were installed beneath the four plot areas. Based on the monitoring results over a period of six years, due to the dry climate encountered in the Lavrion area, a low amount of water percolates through the pyrites if no action is taken (control area), corresponding to 20 - 25 mm per year. This water is highly acidic, pH = 1.2, and contains a heavy load of contaminants, eg Fe 40 g/L, Zn 15 g/L, and As 1.5 g/L. The HDPE cover eliminated the percolation of water into the material for a period of five years, whereas thereafter the volume of leachates increased to values similar to those recorded in the control plot. The water collected in the lysimeter of the clay cover has been minimal corresponding to approximately five per cent of the drainage volume produced in the control area. In the fourth plot, which involved limestone addition to sulfidic tailings, the volume of drainage initially collected was almost double compared to the control area. After three years of monitoring, significant reduction in the amount of percolated water was observed, attributed to the formation of a cemented layer (hardpan), at a depth of 40-80 cm from the testpad surface.

Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.

The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources objective is to use data and information to undertake a detailed analysis of incidents and accidents to identify risks so that the predictable can be foreseen and avoided. The Department of Mineral Resources has established a computerised database called COMET (COmmon Mines EnvironmenT) to capture information on accidents incidents, inspections, audits and accreditation in improving safety and environment performance. This data together with data from Coal Mines Insurance and WorkCover NSW is being used to provide trend and comparison information. The NSW Injury Risk Management Research Centre at the University of NSW has been engaged by the Department to collate and prepare a detailed analysis of the data. Through this process, five areas have been identified for further research. These being: electrical energy, mechanical equipment, work environment, hours of work, and contractors involvement accident and incidents. The paper covers: the establishment of a mix of performance measures for the industry to indicate whether the safety performance is improving; the provision of data to provide useful comparisons and benchmarks against which companies can compare performance; the development of positive performance measures; the findings and outcomes of the detailed analysis of electrical energy; shocks; the provision of information to industry; an outline how the data is being used to determine departmental; operational priorities; and future plans to undertake research into the other areas identified.

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. RACE Quartz-calcite veins containing Au, As, W, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe cross-cut Alpine Fault- related structures in the Alpine Schist of South Island, New Zealand. These veins, and some other related veins have been deposited by metamorphic fluids at 250¦C to >320¦C at pressures of a few hundred bars. The fluids were very variable in composition, with 0 to 50 mole % CO2 and 2 to 18 wt. % NaCl equivalent. Penetration of hot metamorphic fluids to shallow levels in the crust was facilitated by rapid uplift of hot rocks at a compressive plate margin. Fluid immiscibility at shallow levels caused concentration of salts and metals into the aqueous phase. Gold precipitation was caused by reduction by pelitic country rock and/nr dluILion by other aqueous fluids.

The accounting profession in Australia and overseas has taken up the responsibility of setting standards specifically relating to the minerals and energy industries. Australia led the way with AAS7 Accounting for the Extractive Industries. This statement was issued in 1976 and amended 1977..It largely deals with accounting for preproduction expenditure and uses the term "economically recoverable reserves". It does not require disclosure of reserve quantities or values in balance sheets or as supplementary information in financial statements. The United States accounting profession in 1982 finally resolved an accounting standard in the same area as AAS7-SFAS69 Disclosures About Oil and Gas Producing Activities. It applies only to oil and gas producers, but has extensive disclosure requirements, including proved oil and gas reserve quantities. Current developments indicate that Great Britain is about to follow the US example. At this time in Australia, AAS7 or some other statement relating to the extractive industries has not been issued as an approved accounting standard by the ASRB. Standards issued by the ASRB are binding in law.

A natural gamma-ray gauge has been devel- oped for discriminating overburden and inter- seam sediment from low ash coal located on a moving conveyor belt. It is based on the difference in natural radioactivity of the sediment and overburden compared with the low ash coal, which is detected with a highly ef- ficient "Polyscin" NaI(T1) gamma-ray detector located underneath the conveyor. Gauges have been successfully installed on the bucket wheel boom of the two coal dredgers at the Loy Yang Open Cut. They are used to warn dredger operators that they are digging overburden or sediment and that action is required to avoid the sediment or divert it to the waste dump rather than send it to the coal bunkers at the power station.

A new leaching regime was implemented at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MinesÆ (KCGM) Gidji plant on a cyanide leach of ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate. High lime concentration and lead nitrate were used to overcome the refractoriness of the fine sulfides (high reactivity of fine sulfides with the presence of gold tellurides). The leach pretreatment stage was shown to be detrimental and was shut down. Lime titration was introduced as part of the process control. It was shown that the leach could be performed at low dissolved oxygen, (ie 3 - 5 ppm) to avoid sulfide oxidation and the associated high cyanide and lime consumption. Plant results showed reduced cyanide consumption (40 per cent) and an accelerated leaching rate, whereby most of the gold was dissolved in 24 hours compared to 72 hours used previously. Similar work was performed at KCGMÆs Fimiston plant, which leached a combined ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate along with the slimes fraction from hydrocycloning the bulk flotation concentrate. The use of lead nitrate, high lime and carbon-in-leach generated a faster leaching rate and minimised adsorption of gold on fine pyrite particles. The grind, previously controlled with a P80, was replaced by a P98 to give a better operational indication of top size hydrocyclone performance. Before the implementation of the changes, average leach residues for slimes and UFG were respectively 4.0 g/t and 5.5 g/t. With the modifications to the leaching regime, average leach residues were lower by 1.5 - 2.0 g/t. Whilst significant improvements have been demonstrated, further work is progressing at KCGM to further reduce ultra-fine concentrate leach tail grades, and also to improve the understanding of concentrate refractoriness and the factors responsible for differences between laboratory and plant leach results. Estimated profits since the implementation of the new approach are in the range of $A3.5 million per year.
