Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.

The Alligator Rivers Region has been the scene of one of Australia's most intensive environmental monitoring efforts since the current generation of uranium mining was mooted in the 1970s. Prior to mining, the local environment and the nature of potential impacts were not well known. The initial monitoring programs therefore included large baseline characterisation and research components. After some 15 years, water, soil and sediment monitoring programs have been reduced to a fraction of their early size, as the mining and natural systems became better known and characterised, and the actual nature of the environmental impacts were established. Modem techniques allow much more rapid and thorough identification of chemical species and elements of concern, allowing much more focused monitoring programs to be designed. In the 1980s data collection was emphasised at the expense of interpretation, and monitoring programs were maintained at much higher levels than were in fact required. It is now clear that investigations are important and should be distinguished from monitoring programs, and that the timely interpretation of investigations and implementation of recommendations can greatly reduce the effort and expense that can be involved in a monitoring program. Monitoring programs based on a sound understanding of potential environmental impact may then be efficient and cost-effective, yet provide sufficient information to assess the environmental impact of mining, guide further environmental protection measures when problems are detected, and demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.

My experience in preparing independent expert reports has been that "best practice" sets higher standards than any laws or requirements set out by the ASX and NCSC. This is where I see the AusIMM coming in.

Hydrocyclones have widespread use as classifiers in applications such as mine fill preparation and coal preparation. A fundamental conflict often exists between recovery of all of the valuable material and maintaining the quality of the product. This conflict is a result of a portion of the feed material passing through the cyclone, effectively without undergoing any classification. This paper describes an investigation, undertaken as an undergraduate project in mining engineering at the University of NSW (Brook, 1994), into aspects of cyclones in which supplementary water injection is used in an attempt to reduce the amount of misplaced fine material reporting to the coarse product and hence improve the overall classification efficiency. In particular, the study concentrated on the effects of different modes of water injection. Two methods of introducing wash water into the cyclone body were investigated. A series of tests were performed on a laboratory hydrocyclone having provision for radial water injection at different levels through small orifices in the wall of the conical section, and a preliminary study was made of the performance of a novel cyclone in which the conical section had walls of a permeable polyethylene, permitting a uniform introduction of wash water over the entire surface.

Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the problems encountered in designing and sinking No 7 shaft, and to present the methods employed in the operation.The illustrations accompanying the paper show the details of the construction of the equipment used in completing No 7 shaft, consequently the descriptions appearing in the text are brief outlines only. Mineral leases Nos 7 and 8, held by the Broken Hill South Limited, comprise an area of 69.5 acres. The length of the holding is approximately 2500 ft.The western orebodies, which are the main producing masses, enter the property at the northern bonndary. Generally, the dip of the orebody is to the west, and the pitch to the south, but local variations occur and even a reversal of pitch has been noticed. The angle of dip is approximately 70 degrees and the angle of pitch 45 degrees.

This short paper outlines the authorÆs views regarding the progress we have made as an industry in managing mining assets over the past 500 years. It represents a personal view û but one founded in fact-based observations of mining companies and of the mining industry in general. There is no doubt that AgricolaÆs views as expressed in De Re Metallica (1556) were visionary. There is also little doubt regarding another issue û that whilst a great deal has been learnt about the management of mines since AgricolaÆs time, observations suggest that best practice management is the exception rather than the rule across our industry. Although insights regarding the successful management of mines have become apparent, we still witness unnecessary errors in our industry that lead to the loss of shareholdersÆ funds. By highlighting some aspects of current best practice, particularly in the arena of operations management, it is hoped that this short paper contributes a small step along the next 500-year-long learning curve. The paper concludes with a brief description of the progress and impact of continuous improvement initiatives at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Located in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields, KCGM is currently AustraliaÆs largest gold mine producing over 800 000 ounces of gold per annum. Improvement initiatives at KCGM look set to deliver some $100 million in value over life-of-mine.

Nordberg has conducted extensive research, during 1982-85, on the effects of cone crusher variables such as speed, throw and cavity design on the productivity of the crushers. Simultaneously, Nordberg's engineers have developed advanced design and testing techniques that ensure efficient and reliable crusher designs. Combination of this knowledge has resulted in a design of the MPI000 (1000 hp) crusher which fits on the existing 7ft Symons foundation and yet is capable of producing twice the ton- nage of the 7ft. In this paper the development of the MP1000 crusher and its performance compared to the 7ft heavy duty and super heavy duty crushers will be discussed. Also, substantial cost savings resulting from the application of such a high performance machine will be presented.

"Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. The action of free rolling disc cutters is well understood, relationships between disc geometry and performance having been established both in the laboratory and under field conditions. However, under severe operational conditions a malfunction of the disc bearing assembly is likely to produce a definite change of cutting action. Collapsed or siezed bearings can even prevent the disc from rolling and thereby create what is equivalent to a drag pick. This paper describes a programme of laboratory experiments using deliberately stalled discs. Their performance under such conditions is contrasted with that for a free rolling disc and also with a drag pick having a ridged front developing into a negative radiused back clearance angle. In conclusion an assessment is made of the influence stalled discs can have on the torque and thrust requirements for a tunnel boring machine.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

Whitehaven Coal Limited operates an underground longwall mine near Narrabri, New South Wales. The mining horizon in the Hoskissons Seam is overlain by a 16–20 m thick unit known as the Digby Conglomerate, a unit that is sufficiently massive to have potential to cause a windblast during first caving at the start of each longwall panel and periodic weighting throughout the panel. A program of hydraulic fracturing has been successfully used to precondition the conglomerate strata to increase its caveability at the start of each panel. This paper presents a system of temperature monitoring that was used successfully to measure hydraulic fractures at Whitehaven confirming their rate of growth, orientation and interaction with previously placed hydraulic fractures.CITATION:Mills, K W, Blacka, B G, Jeffrey, R G and Salisbury, O, 2014. Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

The BHP Billiton Cannington mine uses sequential flotation to treat a silver, lead and zinc ore supplied from an underground mine. The final products from the process plant are a silver rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. Operational history of plant performance highlighted that the majority of valuable metal losses to final tailing occurred in the -5 ¦m fraction. Research completed on the flotation characteristics of this size fraction in plant feed resulted in the development of a split flotation process to improve the silver and lead mineral recoveries. Construction of a $A 9.5 million brownfield project to install the new split flotation circuit at Cannington was completed in July 2002. The circuit consists of three stages of cyclone classification to recover the ultra fine material to a final cyclone overflow stream, conditioning of this pulp to achieve optimal process conditions, and conventional rougher and three stage cleaner flotation to produce a silver rich lead concentrate. The rougher tail from the new circuit is recombined with the cyclone underflow streams and processed through the original lead-zinc flotation circuit. This paper discusses the circuit design, material properties, material selection for components of the circuit, operational practices and requirements to ensure the circuit succeeded in meeting production targets. The technology is subject of a number of patent applications including international application No PCT/AU02/00400.
