"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. Analcime-bearing rocks are one of the varieties of raw zeolite material, although the characteristics of analcime are not as good as other kinds of zeolites such as clinoptilolite or mordenite. However, some fields of application of analcime-bearing rock have been found, eg a method of water purification has been developed and patented. Analcime-bearing rocks are rather widespread in the Timan region of the Komi Republic of the Russian Federation. They are represented by Upper Permian siltstones and mudstones. The analcime-bearing rocks have the following mineral composition (per cent): clay minerals (50 - 70 per cent), quartz (ten to 30 per cent), analcime (one to 30 per cent), feldspars (two to ten per cent), carbonates (two to five per cent) and pyroclastic material. Analcime aggregates encrust cavities and infill microfissures in rock. Both microcrystalline (crystals <0.01 mm in size) and medium-crystalline (~0.5 mm) aggregates are observed. The mechanical, gravitational, magnetic, sorption and ion-exchange properties of analcime-bearing rocks have been studied. They are characterised by a high index of grindability and a low index of abradability and crush resistance, low values of the benzol-based pore volume and toluene-based specific surface area, and a medium porosity value. The magnesium based ion-exchange capacity (IEC) ranges from 28.7 to 196 mg+equiv/100 g. Analcime-bearing rocks of the Timan region are characterised by low beneficiation potential. Preliminary ultrasonic treatment of the analcime- bearing rocks is efficient for the destruction of intergrowths along their boundaries and production of free analcime aggregates. The proposed beneficiation procedure yields 95 per cent analcime concentrate. In the Komi Republic, analcime-bearing rocks are utilised in agriculture. They are also used for domestic needs (eg as biotoilets for domestic animals) and the solution of ecological problems (regeneration of soil polluted by oil). We have completed experiments on the purification of potable and industrial water using analcime-bearing rock subjected to thermal treatment. The experiments demonstrated that it was possible to decrease water colouration by 20 per cent, turbidity by 79 per cent, permanganate oxidation by 30 per cent and total iron content by 70 per cent.

CPeX is a non-ideal explosive performance prediction model. The model takes into account the rate of energy release, the extent of chemical reac- tion and the effect of confinement on energy release. The model resolves the explosive energy into `shock' and `heave' com- ponents as a function of explosive type, hole diameter and rock type. The predictions of the model are compared for a bulk emulsion, and a prill-doped bulk emulsion in soft rock. The predictions, based on calibra- tion of the model with simple unconfined detonation velocity measure- ments, show the significant effect of non-ideality on explosive Performance.

The New Broken Hill Consolidated Airshaft is the first major undertaking in the development of New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd's. property, which adjoins that of The Zinc Corporation Ltd. on the latter's southern boundary.The Zinc Corporation ore-body has a southerly pitch. The Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft is 1000 ft. north of the common boundary, and the general plan of development of the New Broken Hill Consolidated property is by driving south from this shaft on the lower levels. No downcast airway from the surface was available south of the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft; this shaft acts as the main downcast to the bottom of the Zinc Corporation mine, the general air flow then being northward and upward to the upcast shaft at the extreme north end of the Zinc Corporation property.Rock temperature is 920 F. at 2000 ft., increasing by 10 Fahr. each 72 ft., the rock temperature at 3000 ft. being estimated at 1060 Fahr. With the general air flow northward from the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft, adequate ventilation under these temperature conditions would not be practicable for any great distance south of this shaft without another main airway from the surface. Accordingly the New Broken Hill Consolidated Airshaft is being sunk at a point 1000 ft. south of the common boundary, i.e., 2000 ft. south of the Zinc Corporation's New Main Shaft, to ventilate future New Broken Hill Consolidated workings and that part of the Zinc Corporation mine between the boundary and the New Main Shaft.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.

The cost of production from truck and loader fleets is influenced by management development of the culture of the organisation, work practices, systems and procedures of the production and maintenance teams. Establishing if the cost of production is the best that can be achieved then requires the measurement of results against established standards of performance. This paper provides a series of discussion points of the factors that influence the cost of production from men and machines for large scale open pit mining operation and provides some suggested performance standards in the form of Benchmarks. Most of the references have been drawn from established large scale deep pit mines in USA, Canada and Australia which have had to implement and constantly fine tune cost efficiencies in order to survive. The discussion provides:ò a review of priorities or the relative importance of the various cost elements for a mining system;ò suggestions of systems and procedures for the operation and maintenance of machines which are considered to yield the best overall results;ò examples of operations that have developed and implemented management systems and controls that are achieving good results in specific functions; andò suggested benchmarks of performance.

Completeness of extraction of a mineral from ore depends on many reasons. First of all it is a function of quality of disintegration of ore. It is supposed that two basic factors: character of structure and texture of the ore aggregate and a disintegration technique influence the quality of the mineral aggregate destruction, æopeningÆ of its internal boundaries. In this paper, the problem of technological mineralogy from the point of view of genesis of the mineral aggregate, its typomorphical features and methods of their quantitative description are discussed. The purpose of this research is to provide information for technologists. It should enable the development of a rational flexible scheme of disintegration of ore with full extraction of a useful component, without its losses and without unnecessary expenses of energy. For achievement of this purpose the mineralogical information should have ½number and a measure+. By the authors, the technique of the quantitative analysis of fabric of the mineral aggregate based on several models û thermodynamic, crystallographic and geometrical is offered and discussed. The leading role in the quantitative analysis of a fabric of ore belongs to internal bounders. But internal bounders of the mineral aggregate by bounders or faces of the mineral individuals or mineral grains are formed. Their geometry, orientation concerning own (mineral grain) crystallographic lattices, orientation and distribution in space of the ore aggregate are proportional to the energy accumulated at origin and the further growth. These characteristics of mineral individuals are consequences of conditions of their formation. That is why the named triad of models is used. From crystallography it is known that faces of different stability and mobility form borders of crystals. They also contain different quantity of energy. Mineral grains also are faceted by different energy borders. They form intergrowths with each other according to a principle of balance or unbalance. That is why in addition to traditional parameters of the description of a fabric of the mineral aggregate (mode and grainmetrical composition) it is necessary to add new. For example, length and the square of intergrowthing bounders of mineral individuals differentiated (in couples), crystallographic symbols of borders, their roughness and so forth. Consequently, solving a problem of the geometrical characteristic of borders, we define also its power characteristic. In this paper experience of application of our technology in studying ores of one of deposits of Urals Mountains is presented. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices, which are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode, are possessed. Structure and texture of rock or ore aggregate reflect its formation and transformation conditions. It is important to understand that disintegration energy cannot be more than aggregation energy, the energy of intergrowths formation. The square and orientation of mineral individuals borders vary at pressures or stresses of mineral aggregate evolution. These phenomena often cause selective increase in the square of borders at constant average grain size, ie the granulation. Granulation presents the increase in quantity of mineral individuals while their modal share remains constant. At the same time their average mineral grains size. Some mineral individuals increase in size at increased pressure. When lithostatic or lateral pressure drops the majority of mineral grains increases in volume at the cost of intersticial or film solutions or fine grains. These are only special examples of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate. They illustrate our statement that all changes in fabric of the mineral aggregate are a reaction on varying external (ie geological) conditions. It is possible to consider that structurisation of totality of mineral individuals as a whole is a process of adaptation of the mineral aggregate, which forms and exists in varying force and energy fields. Differential and integrated geometry of total internal boundaries of the mineral aggregate serves as adaptation mechanism of the mineral grains system. Boundaries form intergrowths of the mineral aggregate. Thus, it is possible to consider that the most informative parameters of the stereometric analysis for restoration of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate are the following. First of all, it is a quantitative estimation of the volumetric shape of the ore mineral in crystallographic coordinates, a total area of borders of all mineral grains in the aggregate, the specific square of their boundaries, the specific square of intergrowth boundaries of the ore mineral separately with grains of each minerals of the matrix of the mineral aggregate as well as traditional grainsmetric and modal composition. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices that are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode are possessed.

The Goodall gold mine is located 30 km east of Adelaide River, within the Pine Creek 1:250 000 map sheet, at 8 525 000 mN: 750 000 mE, on the AMG grid. The first gold was poured in April 1988 and the mine closed in September 1993, having produced 228 400 ounces of gold from 4.095 million tons of ore, at a head grade of 1.99 g/t. Oxide and primary ore was mined from one large open cut and low grade oxide ore from three smaller pits. The gold mineralisation was discovered in 1981 by means of a helicopter borne rock chip sampling survey, which delineated 13 discrete anomalies. Systematic grid sampling of rock chips outlined an area of 1300 m by 300 m within the 2.0 g/t contour. Over 7500 m of costeaning was used to delineate the A and B-Pod mineralised areas. Geochemical soil sampling played only a minor role in the discovery and geophysics none at all. By the end of 1984, 40 diamond drill holes had been completed and a resource of 3.63 million tonnes at 3.0 g/t calculated. In January 1985, Western Mining Corporation Ltd became a joint venture partner and funded exploration to cam a 60 per cent interest. Additional drilling led to a feasibility study in 1987, based on a Measured and Indicated resource of 4.25 million tonnes at a grade of 2.35 g/t. The host rocks are quartzo-feldspathic wacke and interbedded phyllitic siltstone, of the Proterozoic Burrell Creek formation. The main zone of gold mineralisation, A-Pod, occurs in a sub-vertical vein array, up to 50 m wide and 800 m in length, of quartz and sulphide veins (5-20 mm wide), It is parallel to and on the east limb of an upright, north plunging anticline. Five types of veining have been recognised, with the bulk of the gold mineralisation associated with quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite and chlorite-quartz-pyrite veins. The gold occurs as particles, from 1-20 micron, as inclusions and along fractures in pyrite and arsenopyrite and to a limited extent in chlorite. The mineralisation is epigenetic and structurally controlled by fractures developed during an earlier folding event. The gold is assumed to have been derived from the underlying sediments of the Koolpin Formation by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the deep seated northern margin of the Cullen Batholith. Precipitation of gold may have been controlled by variations in temperature and pressure.

Zhangmatun Iron Mine is situated in the suburbs of Jinan city. Shandong, China. Because of surface environmental constraints, no suitable site can he selected to dispose of mill waste. The full mill tailings must be disposed of underground. This paper deals with the work conducted at Zhangmatun mine to develop a total tailings backfill system, taking advantage of a double- shaft blade mixer and an activating agitator to prepare backfill. Cement and ground slag are added to tailings for strength development. Two scopes have been filled and the pillars have been effectively mined out during the field trial. The application of innovative total tailings backfill technology is a new concept at the mine. Detailed planning has achieved a close integration of mining, milling and backfilling. Full mill tailings, with or without rock, are disposed of underground in a continuous process to fill, totally and systematically, the cavities formed by mining.

Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

Chlorination of organic matter by direct injection of chlorine gas or hypochlorite has been investigated metallurgically worldwide with little understanding of the basic chemistry of the passivation mechanisms in- volved. In this paper, chlorination of carbon is attributed to oxidation-reduc- tions, resulting in surface halogenation of graphitic or amorphous carbon. It is proposed that chlorine and carbon interact to form thin coatings of chioro-carbon complexes that block the adsorption of gold cyanide com- plexes, thus passivating the gold adsorption sites of carbonaceous matter. Analytical, spectrographic, microscopic and electron-optical methods have been applied to demonstrate the proposed mechanism of chlorine-carbon bonding, as well as to evaluate the advantages and limitations of chlorination in the pretreatment of refractory carbonaceous gold ores.

Design and construction techniques used to develop two highway tunnels in inaccessible mountainous terrain are described. Measures used to adapt the design to the unusual geology and topography are discussed, as well as measures to adapt the construction methods to available equipment, materials, and skills. Sharp local variations in geoloqic conditions resulted in field modifications to both design and construction techniques. The geology is a volcanic ash and breccia-agglomerate at one site, a jointed andesite at the other, which is also the site of a major landslide. Both rock reinforcement in the form of pretensioned and grouted rock bolts with a shotcrete lining,and rock support by struc- tural steel sets with a reinforced concrete lining were used. A canyonside location and high lateral in-situ stresses required modification of design procedures. Pilot tunnels at both sites resulted in adapting the designs to site conditions with large savings in lining costs, disclosing problem areas in advance of the main excavation, and cushioning of blasting pressure to minimize stability problems.

During 1995 a catastrophic accident took place at the No 2 Vaal Reefs shaft in South Africa, when a locomotive fell onto a cage, causing the death of 104 people. The subsequent Commission of Enquiry found that the safety detaching hook had opened when hit by parts of the falling locomotive, detaching the cage from the rope and allowing the cage to drop 400 m down the shaft. It was believed that had the hook not detached, the rope would have been sufficiently elastic not to have failed, implying that many fatalities may have been avoided. In addition, the risk of accidental opening of hooks due to impact with smaller falling objects in shafts became a concern. This paper deals with a comprehensive statistical investigation that was performed to quantify this risk, establish acceptable levels of such risks and to derive criteria for the resistance of detachment hooks against accidental opening caused by impacts. The investigation involved a survey, dynamic finite element analyses and Monte Carlo simulations.

Surface displacements are routinely monitored at multiple points during slope excavation. The monitoring data reveals the safety status of the slope under current loading conditions. They can be used to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope by reducing the uncertainties of the prediction model and its model parameters. In a multistage excavation, the observed displacements in the current stage can be used to update the prediction of the displacements in subsequent stages. Besides, due to the spatial correlation of the slope parameters, the prediction of the displacement at one location can also be updated using the monitored displacements at adjacent locations. This study aims to develop a multistep updating method to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope using time-series monitoring data at multiple points. This method integrates the theoretical computational model with observational evidence. It considers the inherent uncertainty of the slope, model uncertainty and measurement uncertainty. With more monitoring information being incorporated, the prediction becomes closer to the actual performance of the slope. A case study of a multistage excavation of an extremely high rock slope in south-west China is presented for illustration.CITATION:Li, X Y and Zhang, L M, 2014. Mindola mine is currently the deepest mine in the Zambian copper belt. Stoping is currently active to 1330 m below surface with long range plans indicating future production from 1590 m level. The orebody is tabular and dips between 55o to vertical. The thickness varies from 8 to 14 m. The vertical crater retreat method of mining was first introduced at Mindola mine in the late-1980s following several trials that helped define the design criteria for its application. Over the last ten years the method has been continually modified to improve safety and maximise ore production. For example, due to the weakness of some rock units within the orebody formation and the instability of the hanging wall, the last VCR slices are usually between 8 - 10 m thick, and efforts are being made to strictly apply shrinkage method in order to reduce dilution. Recent advances in mining technology in the areas of equipment, blasting techniques, rock mechanics and materials handling have been employed to increase the overall productivity of the mine. Large down-the-hole machines capable of drilling 165 mm diameter blast holes, up to 80 m long are used in stoping. Each stope produces up to 20 000 tonnes of ore per month and can last for three months. Heavy systematic ground support of VCR development has significantly enhanced safety for mining crews and equipment. Crater mining has not only improved productivity and enhanced safety, but also overcome various problems associated with conventional sublevel open stoping previously employed at the mine. This paper discusses the technical and operational aspects of vertical crater retreat mining at Mindola mine during the last ten years. The changes in mining method are often accompanied by changes in mine design, blast design, mining equipment, ground support and operating practices.

Production of hot metal from the Hlsmelt Research and Development Facility at Kwinana, Western Australia commenced in October 1993. The stand-alone facility is a unique, coal-based, integrated ironworks equipped to process iron ore fines to pig iron and simultaneously undertake a wide range of research tasks. The data generated will be used to verify the commercial potential of the technology and to set the design and operating parameters for a full-scale production plant. The design, construction, commissioning and initial operation of the HRDF has required many innovative and practical solutions to be developed and implemented by the international group of organisations contributing to the Hlsmelt Project. Initial operation has produced results which demonstrate the potential of the unique process technology associated with the core plant smelting unit. The recent achievement of post-combustion levels of 60 per cent with heat transfer efficiencies greater than 85 per cent demonstrates that the performance obtained with the Small Scale Pilot Plant in Maxhutte, Germany can be reproduced at a larger scale. The results presented in this paper support the thrust for further intensification and future commercialisation of the process.

Efficient blasting requires constant vigilance with respect to the actual layout being used in the field. Objective measurement techniques are required in laying out a pattern as the 'by eye' or 'thumb suck' methods cannot guarantee consistent results in layout. Erratic blast results are the consequence of such an approach. In a case study at Sons of Gwalia mine, it was demonstrated that incorrect front burdens had a snowballing effect on otherwise carefully laid out blasts, resulting in both excessive amounts of boulders caused by preconditioning of bench fronts and tops, and tight digging. Both problems caused lower excavator productivity and excessive excavator damage, as well as making it difficult to set out subsequent blasts correctly. Several field measurement methods are available to aid in determining correct blast layouts and one is described in this paper.

International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) program to reduce rapid onset geological hazards along the Pacific Rim. Natural disasters observe no national boundaries; international cooperation offers the best opportunity to reduce the losses these catastrophic events create.
