Hoisting ropes are constructed of wires and strands positioned helically around the axis. This helical positioning causes that, in the rope loaded at the end with the weight Q, the longitudinal displacement u, axial force P, torsional displacement v and constant torsional moment M are generated. More over, the proper weight of the rope q gives the force acting along the axis of the rope. This force changes its value from 0 at the bottom to qL at the top. This force gives, along its length, a variable torsional moment making the rope rotate. During the movement of the conveyance downwards the falling part of the rope rotates, which makes it untwist on the section up to the half-depth of the shaft and twist on the other half-depth. As the result, the twisting lay of the rope changes increasing in the upward direction and decreasing downwards. The angle of twist of the strands changes in an apposite way. When moving upwards, the uplifted rope does not twist and retains its state of deformation up to the moment when it passes over the pulley. Next, the cycle of untwisting and twisting repeats during the movement of the other conveyance downwards. This phenomenon is known from mining practice. It was also analysed, in the works of Glushko (1966) and Popowicz (1963).

Detailed underground mine design and optimisation studies undertaken by the author over the past few years have clearly demonstrated that additional value can be created by varying the cut-off grade (COG) spatially throughout a deposit as well as over time. This additional value can be particularly significant for marginal operations. This paper, by way of worked examples, illustrates the conceptual and practical considerations of applying a differential cut-off policy for an underground mine to both maximise value and manage risks associated with production and metal price volatility. Consideration is given to both the design stage of a new mine and to the strategic and practical application of a differential cut-off policy in an operating mine.

This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. This is a case history of prospec- ting carried out by Comstaff Pty. Ltd. over the Pinnacles Area, part 4 of Exploration Licence 5/63, 9 km north of Rosebery in Western Tasmania. Evidence is presented to show that A 0 soil samp ling is a viable prospecting method for outlining polymetallic sulphide occur- rences in areas where leached organic/ glacial soils are common. Diamond drilling of low threshold anomalies has intersected base metal mineralisation.

"The use of conditional simulation to characterise mine plan uncertainty is increasing for the assessment of risk in mining projects. While the development of grade uncertainty profiles is relatively straightforward and can be validated using standard geostatistical techniques, the addition of geological uncertainty to evaluate total risk remains problematic. Some of the problems associated with geological uncertainty methods include the clustering of data in favourable geologic units, difficulty in training image definition and the inability to address change of support issues for categorical variables. Despite these obstacles, the importance of geological uncertainty as a contributor to total uncertainty has prompted Newmont to explore and evaluate the use of various techniques (and combinations of techniques) on different deposit types.Two orogenic deposits of different geological complexity were selected for the study: Subika, a shear zone-hosted deposit, and Merian, a deposit containing gold mineralisation associated with quartz vein zones and stockwork within which are found higher-grade quartz breccia zones. Newmont trialled various categorical simulation approaches to determine the applicability of these methods for each deposit type and the effect of parameter choice on the width of the uncertainty interval. Some of the techniques that were trialled include multiple point statistics methods, sequential indicator simulation using local probabilities as well as variations of these methodologies.The goals of this study included: gaining an understanding of which techniques may work best in which deposit types gaining an understanding of the intricacies of each method gaining an understanding of the effect that each method has on total uncertainty analysis.This paper presents a comparison of the various techniques and makes recommendations for their use in uncertainty analysis.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Perry, R, Allen, L and Inglis, R, 2014. At present there exist few engineering calculations and principles to determine exclusion zones for personnel in the vicinity of underground explosive storage areas. This paper is written to encourage discussion and proposes a method to determine the impact of a blast wave through scientific principles. Then, criteria to determine an ‘exclusion zone’ need to be identified.There has been much work on identifying the pressure rise and the energy of explosive detonations underground but little to develop standards in criteria that can be used to identify exclusion zones for useful design of underground infrastructure. The author presents the newest ways of calculating the pressure rise and energy (impulse) of detonations and puts forward some criteria to be used in the identification of personnel exclusion zones to spark peer review and discussion of these criteria towards developing standards for engineering design.Smith and Sapko (2005) used Sach’s scaling laws to develop a relationship for both pressure rise and impulse, which incorporated factors for intersections. Intersections will have a large bearing on the peak pressure and the energy of the blast wave and needs to be incorporated. Silvestrini, Genova and Leon Trujillo (2009) developed the scaling laws with an energy concentration factor to predict blast propagation in partially confined geometries and together the author has proposed equations for determining the peak side pressure and the impulse in a tunnel. Given the weight and type of the explosive, the average cross-section of the tunnel complex and the number and type of intersections encountered, the pressure and impulse can be calculated.The military has carried out many investigations as to the influence of blast pressure and impulse on the human body. Lung damage, ear damage and velocity knock down are three of the criteria standards that are presented as possible methods of determining exclusion zones around an underground explosives magazine. The author suggests that the velocity curves presented by Bowen, Fletcher and Richmond (1968) could be an acceptable method of determining an exclusion zone as it incorporates the side pressure and the energy of a blast wave to determine the ability of the wave to knock down personnel.CITATION:Lovitt, M B, 2014. In China, there are approximately 3,000,000 million m3 of gas (methane) included in highly gassy mines liable to coal/gas outbursts; the amount of methane pre-drainage possible is estimated at 400,000 - 500,000 million m3. At present, methane drainage has been carried out in 110 mines with a total amount of 19,000 million m3 methane produced during the period of 198 1- 1986. The methane drainage in coal mines of China can be divided into three types: from adjacent seams, from working face seams and from goafs, all with good results. In recent years, general attention has been paid to integrating methane drainage into the mining system but methane drainage from old goafs has to some extent been developed as well.

The gravimetric integral Knudsen effusion method was used to measure cadmium activity values in binary liquid In-Cd alloys in the range 523 to 573 K. The activity measurements together with other studies from the literature indicate that special bonding conditions exist in the melts near a composition corresponding to InCd3. Sound velocities in In-Cd melts were also measured using a precision pulse-echo over- lap method in the range 404 to 953 K. The frac- tional deviation of experimental and ideal isentropic compressibilities at 623K shows a functional dependence on composition with a pronounced maximum near the composition 75 at.%.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

The pressure along the top hori- zontal surface of embedded lining and the vertical sides are measured by pres -sure gauges embedded in sand medium. fhe test results show a complete figure of rupture characteristics of concrete lining embedded in soft ground which approximates alluvial deposite often occur in metro construction at cities near the river side. These test results have been taken as a reference in assessing the action behavior of concrete lining in certain cities in China.

Localised indicator kriging was developed following a similar approach used by Marat Abzalov (2006) in his paper titled æLocalised uniform conditioning (LUC): A new approach for direct modelling of small blocksÆ. Abzalov introduced the idea of mapping panel distributions from uniform conditioning onto selective mining unit-sized blocks that were created using ordinary kriging. This concept of remapping panel distributions was applied to multiple indicator kriging histograms.At Newmont a program was developed that made the remapping of MIK histograms to SMU sized blocks extremely efficient and was subsequently tested on several gold deposits. The results have been encouraging as the localised indicator kriging (LIK) method has eliminated many issues that have plagued both ordinary kriging and multiple indicator kriging. Use of localised indicator kriging methodology limits the smearing of high-grade and the over-smoothing of grade that is common and difficult to control in OK but retains the ability for localising grades. LIK also simplifies change-of-support corrections, eliminates un-mineable slivers of low or high-grade when dealing with small tonnages, and allows for the mapping of linear and non-linear estimates into the same block.

Computational techniques are needed to assist in the analysis and interpretation of the increasing amounts of geoscientific and mining related data and information that are routinely gathered at mine sites. New interpretation methods are needed to provide an integrated approach so as to establish relationships (cause and effect) or to be predictive about possible outcomes based on acquired data. Traditional multivariate statistical methods are often confused by variable relationships that are non-linear, data distributions that are non-normal, and by the data themselves that may contain missing values, text and both continuous and discontinuous numeric values. Modern data mining methods are available to understand the relationships within and between diverse data sets, and identify relationships or trends associated with processes, measurements and mine design parameters in mines. The self-organizing map (SOM) is a data mining approach with the advantage that all input data samples are represented as vectors in a data-space defined by the observations (variables). The SOM procedure is an exploratory analysis tool that highlights patterns and relationships. Results are internally derived, in an unsupervised fashion based on measures of vector similarity. Our SOM outputs are highly visual, which assists in understanding and illustrating the dataÆs structure and internal relationships. Two studies are presented. The first uses SOM to investigate the relationships between a range of measured and derived rock property parameters and their observed behaviours during mining. Our aim was to determine whether a SOM analysis would allow a better understanding of observed and predicted rock behaviours from their rock properties. The SOM analysis showed that there were indeed relationships between æbrittleÆ, æsugaryÆ, æslabbyÆ and æsqueezingÆ rock behaviours and a number of the input parameters. The computed SOM æstructureÆ was then used to assess the likely behaviour of unknown samples by assigning them into behavioural fields based on their measured and derived geotechnical responses. The second study was aimed at assessing whether a SOM analysis of microseismic data at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGM) Mt Charlotte mine can contribute towards understanding and potentially forecasting/minimising seismicity at the mine-design stage. The database comprised 40 sample æclustersÆ of microseismic parameters from the MS-RAP software package, which were derived from 2500 individual seismic events. The SOM analysis showed that some of the initial mining conditions are related to the seismic parameters. In each of the studies, the SOM procedures assisted in understanding the data and provided new insights. Because of its æordered vector quantisationÆ foundation, the SOM procedure is a substantial improvement over traditional statistical methods in three main areas:its ability to analyse data from disparate sources, including different data types; its ability to analyse sparse data sets with missing values; and its ability to analyse and visualise non-linear relationships within a data set.

There are two discrete aspects to collecting portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data to obtain reliable results and to comply with reporting requirements under the 2012 edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012) – sampling method and quality assurance. A robust sampling program is required to obtain representative material for analysis. The appropriate method should be established for a particular project using a small orientation study. A variety of approaches to sampling soils, drill cuttings, rock faces and diamond drill core are discussed. These include using multiple spot analyses, scanning using a single operating beam and the collection of cutting saw pulps. The operator must also be aware of the attenuating effects of analysing through sample bags of different material types for various elements as well as the limitations of current pXRF instruments in reporting reliable data for certain elements. The analysis of the samples must also be accompanied by a quality assurance program in order to generate data that are ‘fit for purpose’. This includes recording X-ray tube resolution on a routine basis, using matrix-appropriate standards for which total elemental concentrations are available, using silica blanks, capturing sufficient duplicate analyses to constrain data precision and obtaining check assays to calibrate pXRF data against laboratory data. Examples of quality control approaches and data are presented. Table 1 of the 2012 JORC Code also recommends that information on instrument make and model, reading times and calibration be provided in any reporting of pXRF data. To this should be added information on operating mode and temperature, software version and moisture content of the samples. A robust sampling methodology with a suitable quality assurance/quality control program should produce pXRF data of sufficient quality for public reporting purposes, provided that the data are presented using appropriate cautionary language and adequate supporting information.CITATION:Arne, D C and Jeffress, G M, 2014. Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Townsville prospect is situated approximately 4 km north of the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Drilling in the 1990s delineated a resource of >1 Moz of gold within shallow, skarn breccia-hosted mineralisation associated with quartz-carbonate infill, together with pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and a variety of Au-, Ag- and Bi-telluride minerals. The deepest of these historical holes (TVL034) also intersected copper-gold-silver mineralisation more than 100 m below the gold-rich zone that is associated with calc-silicate skarn breccia. Although copper-gold-silver mineralisation in DDHTVL034 is associated with clinopyroxene-rich skarn, it was also noted that garnet in the skarn breccia became progressively darker in colour with depth, ranging from green at shallow levels to dark red-brown at depth. This indicated that the skarn breccia is zoned, with more proximal garnet skarn at depth possibly indicating an association with porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation.Based on this skarn zonation model, recent drilling at the Titan prospect, located approximately 500 m south of TVL034, was targeted at potential copper-gold silver mineralisation beneath shallow skarn breccia-hosted gold mineralisation. DDHTVL 081 intersected 46 m at 6.36 g/t Au from 68 m and 80.7 m and 1.67 per cent Cu, 1.27 g/t Au and 20.32 g/t Ag from 184 m. The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

Indigenous brown coals, which provide a readily available primary energy source, have played a significant part in the industrial development of Victoria. The deposits located in the Latrobe Valley compare in extent with other major deposits of brown coal in the world. Smaller but valuable deposits occur at Stradbroke, Gelliondale, Anglesea and Bacchus Marsh. Extensive drilling, aided by geophysical surveys, and detailed analyses of coal samples, have enabled the extent and quality of these Tertiary deposits to be Defined.

Pbo activities have been measured in conventional blast furnace and direct smelting type slags at 1200¦C. Much higher activity coefficients than previously measured have been obtained and attributed to interactions between iron and lead oxides. The behaviour of PbO in the two types of slag reflects their relative silica contents. Simple equations derived from mathematical modelling work are presented for the prediction of Pbo activities in complex industrial slags.
