The San Vicente stratabound zinc-lead rhythmite deposit, Peru, is hosted in carbonates of the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic Pucara Group. These strata were deposited in a large, shallow water, carbonate platform which extended nearly continuously for 150 kilometers (north-south) in the eastern part of the Pucara basin.The distinctive sulfide-bearing rhythmites occur in three dolomite units which, from bottom to top, include the San Judas horizon with one sulfide-bearing manto; the San Vicente horizon with seven sulfide-bearing mantos including the main ore horizon; and the Alfonso horizon with three sulfide-bearing mantos. The dark gray sulfide-bearing dolostone layers range in thickness from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and contain variable amounts of carbonaceous material, pyrite, quartz, fine-grained sphalerite and galena. They are bordered on each side by selvages of yellow to red-brown coarse-grained sphalerite containing minor amounts of galena. Coarsely crystalline white or gray sparry dolomite is found between the coarse-grained sphalerite layers. Although commonly stratiform and uniform in thickness, the dark layers curve, "pinch out," coalesce, and form "islands" and "peninsulas."Mineral replacement textures, the paragenetic sequence, and presence of sparry dolomite, bitumen, intraformational breccias and isotope data support a hydrothermal replacement origin by metal-bearing solutions that deposited the ore and related minerals in space previously occupied by dolomite and evaporite minerals. The alignment of the Zn -Pb deposits, and at San Vicente the orientation of the mantos, the spatially and temporally associated igneous sills and the tourmaline-bearing sandstone support hydrothermal mineralization driven by a magmatic heat source in a tensional regime.

In most instances, the application of high-chrome grinding media results in an increase in the recovery of the valuable mineral(s). The authors have published data from a number of plant-based case studies, which indicate that it is not unreasonable to expect a recovery increase in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2.0 per cent for a copper ore. It is of interest to understand where the increase in recovery is coming from. That is, is the additional copper recovery the result of improved fine particle flotation or is it due to an improvement across all size fractions?This paper aims to answer this question. Laboratory flotation tests were completed using forged steel and a high-chrome alloy on a volcanogenic massive sulfide copper ore. The unsized data indicated that the application of high-chrome grinding media to this ore resulted in an improvement in both copper recovery and copper concentrate grade. A detailed kinetic analysis of both the copper sulfide and gangue minerals was completed that clearly shows that the change to a more inert grinding media produced significant increases in the flotation rate constants (both fast and slow) across all size fractions. It is also possible to observe that the change in pulp chemistry has resulted in a decrease in the flotation kinetics of the -20 micron pyrite, while the coarse pyrite recoveries have increased, presumably because of an increase in the flotation of the chalcopyrite/pyrite composite particles.CITATION:Greet, C J, Jacques, S and Kinal, J, 2014. St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012. This paper describes the methodology developed to establish a sequentia mining plan applied to a coal mine, using computers. Firstly, isocontou. maps were generated from the drill holes and outcrop description information, representing the thickness and depth of the rock formation: present in the mine site. The procedure relies on the repeated application of the cross validation techniques, until the standard deviation of thi estimation is reduced to a minimum.From this map the coal reserves of the two coal seams, the overburdet (separated in hard and soft material) and the interburden were calculated After that, the maps were transferred in digital files to AutoCAI software, where different mining plan simulations were performed. 7b ore evaluation in each case was done automatically, including tonnages volumes and stripping relations. The final mine configuration consider the economic aspects of the operation.

A failure of the Pit IA highwall in July 1989 led Newcrest Mining Ltd's Telfer Gold Mine to commence underground operations approximately 12 months ahead of schedule. The failure presented four major challenges to management: 1. how to maximise the recovery of the Middle Vale Reef (MVR) in the open pit: 2. how to minimise the risk to personnel involved in the extraction of the remaining open pit ore; 3. how to avoid disruption to ore supply: and 4. how to maintain a permanent and safe means of accessing the underground operations from the base of the pit. The risks associated with meeting these challenges were minimised through the installation of a complex network of real time slope monitoring equipment. These monitors were connected to an alarm system which was combined with detailed operational procedures to be carried out in the event of a highwall alarm being triggered. The accuracy with which the risk of failure has been managed was demonstrated recently when the onset of a second failure was initially identified some 13 months prior to its ultimate collapse in October 1992. The location, timing and size of the failure was able to be predicted allowing appropriate precautionary measures to be taken to ensure safety of access to the underground portal and pumping equipment in the base of the pit. This paper reviews the sequence of events leading to both the July 1989 and October 1992 failures of the Pit 1A highwall and the monitoring equipment and procedures used to identify, quantify and manage the risk to personnel operating in the base of the pit.

It is shown that coke has a major influence on the pattern of operation and on the aerodynamics of the blast furnace and that the physical and chemical characteristics of coke, at each stage in the furnace, determine its ability to satisfy requirements for iron production and coke economy. Analysis of coke sampled from operating furnaces is compared with furnace behaviour. The available data suggests the importance of segregation, strength, size change and chemical degradation of coke on furnace performance. Correlations are presented for coke breakdown ratio as a function of coke rate and hearth diameter which shows that breakdown increases with hearth diameter and with decreasing coke rate. It is also shown that the Micum tests do not reflect the coke strength in a predictable way and that solution reactions appear to play an important role in giving rise to a pitting effect on the cell walls of the coke with the resultant deterioration in coke properties. The catalytic effect of activating substances, such as alkalis, is noted and results are presented which show the effect of carbon solution on the coke strength. The importance of coke in the stack and in the bosh is discussed and flooding results are presented for BSC furnaces which show the probable driving limits for the furnaces considered. It is also shown that coke sampled from different tuyeres in a furnace gives quite different flooding limits. Other applications of the coke test work at BSC are also noted and the relevant objectives listed.

The theoretical and experimental studies have been done to clarify the hearth flow of iron and slag. The results of dissections show that the hearth can be treated as a packed bed of coke hav- ing good permeability with a coke-free layer at the bottom of the hearth. 3-dimensional numerical calculations of hearth flow with and without a coke-free layer are carried out, and the results are assured by a water model simulation. The influences of a coke-free layer on the iron flow and the discharge route of iron and slag are examined. The 3-dimensional flow pattern can be represented simply by the travelling time, which depends on characteristically the profile of coke-free layer and the quantity of iron in the hearth. Those flow parameters could be obtained by the results of radioisotope tracer test ( Co for iron flow, and Sc for slag flow) at several furnaces. As a result, it is found that the coke-free layer repeats the cycle of appearance and disappearance at several-month intervals. This cycle corres- ponds to large temperature fluctuation at the bottom of hearth. The relation between iron flow and skull (solidified iron, coke and deposited graphite mixed layer) on the hearth brick was studied by the model experiment and the thermal analysis based on the indications of thermocouples installed in the bottom of the hearth. If a thin coke-free layer is formed on the skull, a fast iron flow is generated in the layer, and melts away the skull. The growth and melting of skull produces the fluctuation of thermal load on a bottom brick, causing brick Damage.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. In this paper, the authors attempt to bridge the gap that currently exists between the duty-of-care responsibilities of underground mining industry personnel, and the multifaceted health challenges facing mineworkers in Western Australia’s metal mines where diesel-powered mobile equipment predominate. In addressing this issue, the complexities of the nature and extent of the challenges are discussed along with the current inadequacy of existing regulatory metrics. Support is given to the need for well-organised in-mine baseline studies to clearly define the distribution and aging characteristics of the toxic and carcinogenic pollutants within the mine ventilation system, with special emphasis given to exploring the validity of biomonitoring systems. The paper concludes with the proposal that a template risk assessment data sheet be prepared for the industry to provide mining personnel with a sound basic knowledge of the health risks involved and the control measures and precautions available for minimising and/or eliminating the hazard.CITATION:Jones, O, Musk, A W, Reid, A and Davis, C, 2017. This paper, one of two written about the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling Conference, 1993, describes the design and monitoring aspects of the railway tunnels built between Central Station and Brunswick Street Station.The design was mainly influenced by the need to minimise settlement of buildings above the route. In flotation cells, especially in large flotation units, froth management is a crucial variable that should be considered during the design phase or optimised to improve the performance of existing flotation circuits. This paper presents a simulation evaluation of the effect of launder design on the metallurgical performance of an industrial flotation circuit consisting of five TankCell® e630 (630 m3 ) cells in a Cu rougher duty. This analysis was carried out using a new industrial simulator, which was built on a wide database collected from many industrial concentrators. This tool is currently incorporated into HSC Chemistry® software and allows evaluation of the effect of launder design on mineral froth recovery, water recovery, entrainment, and other variables to be quantified. The industrial flotation circuit was evaluated under different launder design scenarios, considering an actual flotation circuit that includes TankCell® e630 cells for calibration and as a reference (baseline). Firstly, two different designs were evaluated in the full circuit: a standard launder design and a new launder technology. It was found that the new launder technology enabled improvement of the mineral recovery along the circuit, mainly for coarse particles, due to the improvement in froth mineral recovery. Next, the partial upgrade of the launder design along the circuit was analysed. Thus, the new launder technology was evaluated in the first and the last two cells of the bank. The results showed that upgrading the launders in different cells along the circuit delivered an increase in the final recovery with respect to the baseline, with a partial impact on the concentrate grade. However, these changes are less than those when evaluating the full upgrade scenario. A partial launder upgrade either in the first or last two cells of the bank showed similar final recoveries, but the latter enabled a slightly higher concentrate grade (about 1 per cent higher) to be achieved. Finally, the evaluation of launder design using the industrial simulator made it possible to estimate its effect on variables that are not commonly obtained from plant surveys, including froth recovery per particle size, collection recovery per particle size and liberation, gangue entrainment and bubble loading grade.

Extraction under very mild conditions - a few minutes at room temperature with poor solvents - yields results characteristic of surface properties for a variety of coals. Such superficial extractions preferentially remove long-chain aliphatic compounds. As coal becomes more oxidized, less of these yellow- colored compounds is extracted, forming the basis for a simple colorimetric test for coal surface quality. The fact that these aliphatic compounds are responsible for surface hydrophobicity is supported by good correlation between extraction results and floatability, which decreases with decreasing extractability. This extraction test is very sensitive to oxi dationb even the effect of heating for an hour at 100 C can be detected. A second extraction test using mild alkali conditions has shown good correlation with plant dewatering Operations.

The use of saline water for mineral beneficiation in arid regions is general practice and also the case with Exxaro Namakwa Sands, situated on the west coast of South Africa. Although it is ‘cost effective’ to use sea water for mineral beneficiation, downstream process separation efficiencies may be negatively affected. This is more specific to surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic and high tension (HT) separation. If minimal fresh water is available then, proper washing is often neglected. Salt crystals can form on particle surfaces during the drying process before electrostatic separation.This paper describes a study that has been conducted to determine the effect of upfront salt water processing on downstream electrostatic/HT separation. The study indicated that minor quantities of salt can cause the separation efficiency to decrease substantially.

The South Deposit Tailings Storage Facility (SDTSF), located at Grange Resources Pty Ltd’s (Grange) Savage River mine in north west Tasmania, has recently begun construction. The facility will provide storage for approximately 37 million cubic metres of tailings, equating to approximately 20 years’ tailings storage.The SDTSF embankment will be constructed entirely out of waste rock won from mining operations, and will feature a flow-through drain constructed from alkaline, non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock. This provides Grange with an economical storage solution for waste management (both tailings and waste rock) and maximises available space on site. The outflows discharged through the alkaline rock ‘flow-through’ will provide a long-term source of alkalinity to Main Creek, subsequently feeding into Savage River. This will provide environmental benefits to the downstream ecology that has long been degraded due to the effects of legacy acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), caused by historical mining operations.CITATION:Longey, R, Brett, D and Simmons, A, 2015. Alumina is a major impurity in Australian iron ores and as the higher grade ores become depleted there will be a stronger focus on treating lower grade haematite/goethite ores and developing suitable beneficiation techniques to reduce the alumina content. High alumina in iron ore is deleterious in that it can:• produce slags with lower desulfurising capacity,• reduce sinter/pellet strength and quality, and• produce higher slag volume and increase slag viscosity.Meeting iron ore quality specifications for alumina by blending ore from different sources will eventually be insufficient. Hence, innovative flow sheets based on new and commercially available technologies will be required. Their advantages and disadvantages, the testing methodologies and the challenges and diffi culties involved in reducing the alumina content of iron ores are presented and discussed.

"Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. The nickel operations at Kambalda consist of mining thin massive to disseminated Ni sulphide orebodies from 10 individual mines of variable grade.Daily sampling involves visual estimation of the grade of working faces based on geological parameters. This system of grade estimation is used as a guide for daily grade control only.Nickel metal allocation is based on an external sampling system. As all ore sources are blended at the primary crusher, only one calculated mill head grade is available. Therefore all sources are sampled prior to crushing. This system historically consisted of mechanically grab sampling ore from trucks as they passed over a weighbridge on arrival at the concentrator. Currently the system involves diverting one out of every ten trucks to its mine sample stockpile, which is crushed through the primary, secondary and tertiary crushing system fortnightly. The individual mine grades are re-combined to create a total sample grade. This is reconciled against the calculated mill head grade. The reconciliation factor is applied uniformly to all individual mine sample grades to calculate mill reconciled mine grades.

Newcrest Mining LimitedÆs Telfer Mine is a world-class gold and copper producer, situated in the Great Sandy Desert, in the north west of Western Australia. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics such as being one of AustraliaÆs most remote mine sites, being within 270 km of the hottest town in the southern hemisphere (Marble Bar) and having been shut down and reopened after a two-year feasibility study. The construction of a new plant and reopening of the mine gave Newcrest the opportunity to review their mining practices and systems including the opportunity to incorporate reconciliation as a core process. Telfer is now well on the way to being one of the largest gold and copper concentrate producers in Australia. When the mine reopened in June 2003, Telfer implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate reconciliation of geological models, production data and plant measurements. The system was implemented on site in June 2004, as a web-based information management system, integrating other existing mining and plant software packages. It continues to provide an auditable process and consistency of data, providing ease of analysis with standard and customised reporting. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Telfer. It outlines the consolidation of a number of management systems into one centralised system that can be used to compare and reconcile the tonnes and grades from the mine through to the mill. The authors outline the key estimates and measures that are used for reconciliation at Telfer, detailing the characteristics of the system used to capture the information and the benefits that have been gained through the use of a rigorous reconciliation process on a complex orebody.

Studies by Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd (TIP) have indicated that underground quarrying of backfill may be a cost competitive option for providing backfill for specialised situations in underground mining. Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authorsÆ personal observations and experience.
