Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens. Aitik is a large copper porphyry type deposit located in northern Sweden, currently exploited at an annual rate of approximately 45 Mt. The ore’s exceptionally low head grade of 0.25 per cent Cu and varying degrees of hardness across the entire deposit pose challenges to the two fully autogenous grinding lines, each of which comprises a primary autogenous mill in series with a pebble mill. The variability in ore grindability frequently leads to fluctuations in mill throughput. Within the framework of a geometallurgical approach, the present study investigated the relationships between ore grindability and modal mineralogy. For this purpose, drill core samples from different lithologies were subjected to Boliden AB’s in-house grindability tests. This fully autogenous laboratory-scale test generates a grindability index mainly related to abrasion breakage, which is a significant breakage mechanism within autogenous mills. The test results suggested divergent degrees of grindability within and across the selected rock types. A combination of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence analyses was performed for the grinding products and bulk mineral samples. The resulting mineralogical and elemental properties were subsequently correlated to the parameters from the grindability tests. It was shown that the main mineral phases, such as plagioclase, quartz, and micas, correlate well with the grindability indices. Similar correlations were found regarding the sample’s chemical composition, attributable to the main mineral phases. A further inverse correlation was established between the sample’s calculated average Mohs hardness and the grindability indices. Moreover, mineral liberation information provided by scanning electron microscopy was associated with the parameters mentioned earlier. The identified relationships between grindability, modal mineralogy, and element grades may help Boliden develop a predictive throughput model for Aitik based on the mine’s block model.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. In addition, a case study comparing two different density determination methods applied to the same rock samples from the Los Bronces Copper mine was undertaken and the results of that study are presented here.Selecting the most appropriate method to determine density and comparing results from two or more techniques against each other, together with other suitable quality control procedures, is considered to be of utmost importance for all mining operations and exploration projects.CITATION:Makhuvha, M, Arellano, R M and Harney, D M W, 2014. A major breakthrough in extending the life of the wear material of high pressure roll crushers when treating moist, highly abrasive material has removed the last impediment to the widespread acceptance of high pressure comminution in the minerals industry. The system is very energy efficient. It has been demonstrated that in the cement industry energy savings of up to 50 per cent have been achieved compared to conventional hall milling. Besides being energy efficient, the process provides some remarkable and useful effects; ò better liberation of mineral constituents (as proven for diamond liberation). ò preferential comminution where induced micro fissures follow grain boundaries. ò higher reactivity of the product due to micro fissures. All these points will be described here together with a review of current flowsheet design and incentives for the use of this method of Comminution.

Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

If appointing a single Managing Contractor, the Owner or Manager must stipulate what is and what is not required from the Project Controls Systems. There are numerous computer programs available for scheduling and cost control and it is important to select systems which best serve the Owner's needs.

The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Treating an ore blend from five different deposits at Newgold’s Peak Gold Mine (PGM) has always been a challenge due to the inherent variability between each of the orebodies.Operating the processing plant at PGM with a ‘normal’ level of process control and a good operations and metallurgical team has allowed the processing plant to achieve above the name plate design at 102 t/h and recoveries in the order of 92.8 per cent for gold and 88.4 per cent for copper.With a company value and culture of striving for continuous improvement, PGM implemented the Manta Cube® system, an advanced process control system, for the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, gold leach circuit and tailings thickener over a 12-month period throughout 2012 and 2013.The overall benefits of implementing the Manta Cube® system has led to an increase in mill throughput of at least two per cent, improved SAG mill liner life, a ten per cent decrease in cyanide consumption and a reduction in flocculant of at least 30 per cent with no detriment to the gold and copper recoveries.The entire project had a payback period of less than two months, and the combined benefits resulted in an overall increase in revenue of at least $5 million per annum. The operation of the cyanide-sensitive Mintek/TB1 kegold electrode was studied in the laboratory, with regard to equilibration time and drift, the effects of pH, stirring, salinity, dissolved oxygen, zinc and copper(I) ions. Methods for valid calibration in the range 20-600 mg(NaCN)/L and pH values in the range 9 - 12 in the absence of copper were also studied. Increasing the salinity beyond a threshold of 40 g(NaCI)/L improves calibration and measurement. The sensitivity is 91 mV per decade change in the concentration of ionic cyanide, and output is reproducible to within 10 mV with attention to the factors listed above. However, salinity of 40 g(NaCI)/L also sensitises the electrode to interference by copper(1) ions. This copper sensitivity seems capable of saturation, suggesting a research strategy for possible remedies.

The technology of flotation recovery of silver from the residue of a zinc plant is described. The peculiarity of this technology is a preliminary pulp conditioning in sodium chloride solution in the presence of aluminum metal under high temperature. In this process the silver is converted to the metallic phase and then floated with the usual sulphydryl collectors. A variant using a combined technology is also described, in which before flotation is performed about 50 per cent of silver is leached. The total silver recovery with the combined technology comes up to 90 - 94 per cent.

The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Production from a major, deep orebody requires the construction of two 6 m diameter, 1000 m deep ventilation shafts over the next three years. Further ventilation upgrades have foreshadowed an additional 1500 m of 6 m diameter shafts beyond that. After reviewing the construction alternatives it was decided to raisebore the first shaft in one pass using Western Mining Corporation's 121R raiseborer and the Wirth sequential head. The significant cost and speed of construction potential of 6 m raiseboring justified the risks associated with this new technology. Large diameter sequential head raiseboring has only been carried out in South Africa. Over the last three years many lessons have been learnt and the technology has progressed to being considered feasible. Operating practice and the optimisation of raiseboring performance for specific ground conditions are the areas requiring further work. The development of large diameter raiseboring in South Africa and the site preparation and initial operation at Z.C. Mines are described. Comment on actual operating experience includes the geotechnical investigations, the raiseborer foundations, cuttings disposal and the drilling of the pilot hole which has progressed to beyond 450 m. Unforeseen difficulties with the verticality of the pilot hole and with mud losses illustrate the types of problems that can be expected.

Mineralogy is the link between ore formation and ore extraction. It is the most fundamental component of geomet programs, and the most important aspect of a life-of-project approach to mineral resource projects. Understanding orebodies is achieved by understanding the mineralogy and texture of the materials, throughout the process, because minerals hold the information required to unlock the value they contain. Geomet mineralogy programs absolutely require the appropriate expertise and at least three steps of mineral characterisation prior to using semi-automated or other methods: field examination, thorough core logging, and optical microscopy. Economic geological inputs for orebody characterisation are necessary for orebody understanding, and are exemplified by current research in the Zambian Copperbelt, where revised sequence stratigraphy and understanding of alteration, metasomatism and metamorphism can be used to predict topical issues at mine sites. Environmental inputs for sustainability characterisation are demonstrated by recent work on tailings from the Leadville, Colorado, USA area, including linking mineralogy to water quality issues. Risk assessments need to take into account the technical uncertainties around geological variability and mineral extractability, and mineralogy is the only metric that can be used to make this risk contribution.CITATION:Olson Hoal, K, Woodhead, J and Smith, K S, 2013. "Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first'stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. As a result of the rapid economic growth in Japan, environmental problems have become a national concern in the latter half of the In 1967, the Basic Lair for Environmental Pollution Control was enacted as a fundamental ::olicy in this field. This lair provided compre- hensive guidelines for the action to be taken pollution prevention. The biggest problem n air pollution of those days was that of the sulphur dioxide content of the atmosphere. Based upon the law, the smelters in Japan have struggled hard to solve this difficult problem. Consequently, the ambient SO2 level has been lowered gradually year by year. At present, the ambient SO2 level is nearly equal to that in the atmospheric background. Furthermore, the fixation ratio of sulphur in Japanese copper smelters has attained up to 99.5 per cent.

India is well endowed with vast reserves of banded hematite ore, about 12 billion tonnes, estimated by some conventional methods. Various authors have assessed this huge reserve using some advanced geostatistical methods. A Banded Iron Formation (BIF) belt named the `Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai' belt in India has been chosen as a case study. In this paper, the experiences of Chiria iron ore, in particular, have been described. This study will finally create a dynamic mineral inventory after standardising the geostatistical parameters which will help to cater for the needs of the stringent quality requirements of the Indian steel industries.
