Polish coal mines are well equipped with methane monitoring systems,nevertheless the worsening conditions force a continuous impro- vement in the field of environmental monitoring. Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Several new sensors and portable instru- ments for methane monitoring and early fire detection have been developed and tested in mining conditions.

The subject of my paper is one which, I am certain, has exercised the mind of every man on whom depends the safe and economical conduct of mining operations; particularly in this district where the enormous size of the ore body has necessitated the mine workings assuming a scale that was hitherto unknown in the history of Australian mining. I, therefore, approach the subject with the feeling that I am displaying considerable t.emerity, knowing as I do that the subject has engaged the earnest attention and thought of everybody immediately concerned in the extraction of the ore of this district, and particularly of the Broken Hill lode.I think I shall not be contradicted in asserting that a very large proportion of eur accidents are distinctly traiceable to inexperience on the part of the miner, and records at the mines and verdicts of coroners' juries in many instances uphold this assertion by showing that the accident under notice was the direct result of lack of knowledge of the conditions of the work, or, at any rate, of an error of judgment hardly conceivable in the experienced miner. That this assertion is correct may also be proved by visiting any of the mines of the district.To the experienced eye it will be evident at once that a very large number are not in way skilful in the use of their tools and, therefore, lack the experience which of necessity must be coincident with the acquirement of skill. As Pliny commented two millennia ago, The only certainty is that nothing is certain. Despite the many breakthroughs, advances and promises, the way we each live and work remains awash with technological, economic and political uncertainty. The resources sector is no exception in this regard. Mining itself is much more than a complicated process or recipe; it is a complex adaptive system. The way we adopt and adapt new technologies, the way we evolve data into corporate wisdom, the way we make decisions and even the way we view our concept of rationality should each be the subject of intense review. Translating these sentiments into sustainable company growth is indeed the challenge. This is unlikely to be achieved within convention, but through innovation. The game is changing!

Nuggety gold-quartz reefs are characterised by localised, high-grades and in many cases coarse free-gold. Geometrical and grade complexities are often observed. The high-grade regions are generally erratic and have a low continuity; though may make the deposit economic. Viable grades are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade material. Drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development and bulk sampling. In general terms, only an inferred resource is likely to be estimated from surface drill data alone. Underground development, further drilling and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate inferred and indicated resources. Closely spaced development with bulk sampling is likely to be the best way to determine a probable reserve. The resource evaluation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand the controls to reef geometry and grade distribution. Geological interpretation has traditionally been undertaken in two-dimensions, though computer software is now being used to produce three-dimensional models. Grade interpolation has generally been undertaken using classical methods, typically weighted averages, zone of influence weighting and polygonal/sectional blocks. Tonnages can generally be calculated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because of its highly erratic and discontinuous nature. To account for variability it is recommended that a best estimate be reported within a grade range, as this more accurately reflects the uncertainties involved. Reporting should be undertaken within the framework of the JORC code, but should involve special consideration of grade reliability.

Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines.The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation.A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed.Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.CITATION:Baguley, W, 2013. The movements of the major continental cratons and the distribution of the principal tectonostratigraphic terranes are reviewed in the Circum-Pacific region during Phanerozoic time. It is concluded that major periods of orogeny and consolidation of accreted terranes in the Circum-Pacific region is best correlated with periods of advance of cratonic blocks over the Pacific Ocean basin combined with relative convergent to transpressive motions between the cratons and the Pacific Ocean plates. Continental collisions and collision of terranes with continental margins has not been a significant geodynamic process in Circum-Pacific tectonic evolution. The permanency of the Pacific Ocean basin throughout 500 MA is remarkable. It appears no continental block or large continental fragment has ever entered or crossed the Pacific Ocean basin since early Paleozoic time. This area where no continent has entered for 500 MA is almost coincident with the present Pacific Ocean basin and seems associated with the 25 to 100 meter geoid high which dominates the present-day figure of the Earth.

The City of Sydney is currently investing in a number of infrastructure projects that require tunnel excavations within the Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone. It is generally accepted that this formation has high residual stresses of ‘tectonic’ origin, so much so that these stresses have been implicated in a number of well-known failures and problems for tunnelling. These include failure of ‘roof beams’ comprising discrete beds in the crown of tunnel excavations; stress-induced spalling and ‘slabbing’ of tunnel walls; shear displacement between beds causing the failure of rock bolts; strain in adjacent infrastructure and, the necessity for re-grouting of high conductivity fractures due to stress relief dilation after excavation. Whilst there is an extensive published database of in situ stress measurements comprising ‘hydrofrac’, ‘over-coring’ and ‘slotter’ stress measurements, these data indicate a considerable spread of results. The traditional approach to interpreting this data has been to attempt to fit linear correlations to stress versus depth data, based on personal experience and ‘back-analysis’ of monitoring data during construction. However, there are a number of such correlations in the literature and there is divergence of opinion regarding the assessment of ‘background’ in situ stress and appropriate upper and lower bound values for design. This paper provides a brief review of the published data; suggestions on an alternative ‘risk-based approach’ to assigning in situ stresses for design; and, proposals on how in situ stress tests may be conducted in future to improve the quality of the database available to designers.CITATION:Macklin, S, McKay, G and Erskine, M, 2014. For any processing plant there will be deleterious elements or minerals which affect production or quality, and a strategy to predict their occurrence and mitigate their impact is required. An early objective of the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program was prediction of the acid consumption and gelling behaviour of the ore, which affects leach recovery, throughput and circuit availability. The geometallurgical test program measured the response of a wide range of ore types, and then relationships between mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry were developed. Thus the drivers of acid consumption and triggers for gelling events could be described in ways that were meaningful to plant operations.To enable optimisation of the mine planning and ore blending processes, the parameters driving metallurgical response must be translated to the block model. Data support is critical in populating a block model. Assay information is easily obtained, but mineralogical and metallurgical information is more expensive and time consuming to collect. Hence population of a block model with mineralogical and metallurgical values using a conventional geostatistical approach is not always possible.An alternative approach employed at Olympic Dam was the development of a suite of assay-to-mineral algorithms. These algorithms were calibrated using all available mineralogical information, and this enabled the calculation of mineral abundances for more than 1.5 million assayed samples. Estimation of the minerals in the block model, and the generation of acid consumption values for each block could subsequently occur.The use of back-calculated mineralogy from assays as part of process model generation is an innovative tool which can be used for mine planning and optimisation and to ensure the plant does not receive any unwelcome surprises. Ultimately, one purpose of geometallurgy is to predict potential processing issues and their drivers so that these can be mitigated. A strategy to achieve this is outlined hereafter.

In the 10 years from 1998 to 2008 the annual number of fatalities in the Australian mining industry has plateaued (MCA, 2007-08 and abc.net.au website). Despite significant efforts to eliminate fatalities, this is not a comfortable statistic in this very public performance indicator.GHD has been working with the mining and minerals processing industry to identify the key risks that lead to fatalities utilising a semi quantitative risk assessment technique (SQRA®), initially developed to assist Major Hazards Facilities prepare Safety Cases (OH&S, 2007-08) in response to the Longford Incident in 1998 (Dawson and Brooks, 1999).Workshop cross functional teams are assembled from the sites and led by the GHD facilitators to identify the incident types that can have fatal consequences, the causes of those incidents and the controls that are utilised (or could be utilised) to reduce the risk. The risks for each incident type are quantified to produce a risk profile for the facility and the critical controls – the controls that have the greatest impact at reducing the risk of fatality – are selected. These controls are assessed for their adequacy and improvement actions are identified. Prioritisation of the actions is achieved by re-estimating the incident risk profiles.A review has been undertaken using a small sample from the more than 100 individual studies that GHD has completed at mining and minerals processing sites. The five most significant risks reported by sites are:1. Fall from Heights,2. Vehicle/ Vehicle and Vehicle/Pedestrian interactions,3. Entanglement,4. Molten Metals and Materials, and5. Electricity.The most significant reductions in risk identified were found to be by implementing engineering controls. Examples include:1. Chutes to contain splashes and spills of molten materials,2. Redesigning instrument and equipment layouts to take personnel away form high risk areas,3. Designing remotely operated equipment to remove personnel away from high risk areas,4. Proper fire fighting equipment provisions such as deluges around flammable materials, and5. Adequate risk assessment to ensure equipment is designed to handle the real situations and not a design case to meet an arbitrary specification.All of these cases and many of the actions identified in the studies could have been handled through better design and construction early in the life of a project rather than retrospectively fitted after operations have begun.

Geometallurgical parameters are descriptions of the mineralogy and microstructure of the ore determining its mineralogical and microstructural characteristics. From a conditional geostatistical simulation of such properties, a processing model can compute recovery, equipment usage, processing costs, and thus the monetary value for mining and processing a block with certain processing parameters. The output can be used for optimising mining sequences or finding optimal processing parameters by solving the corresponding stochastic optimisation problem.The approach requires two properties of the simulation not provided by established geostatistical techniques:Many relevant geometallurgical parameters are from non-Euclidean statistical scales such as (mineral) compositions, (grain size) distribution, (grain) geometry, and (stratigraphic type) categorical, which might produce nonsensical values (for example, negative proportions, negative facies probablities, planar grains) when simulated with standard geostatistical techniques.Due to the nonlinearity of processing, the entire conditional distribution of the geometallurgical parameters is relevant, not only its mean and variance. The geostatistical simulation needs to reproduce the joint conditional distributions of all the geometallurgical parameters.The multipoint conditional geostatistical simulation technique discussed here allows for jointly simulating dependent spatial variables from various sample spaces. The technique combines an infill simulation, similar to the one used in multipoint geostatistics, with a new form of distributional regression to estimate conditional distributions of arbitrary scales from different information sources, including training images, training models and observed data. The distributional regression is based on a generalisation of logistic regression and is related to both Bayesian Maximum Entropy geostatistics and high order cumulants.The method ensures that simulated data reside in the set of possible values and honour the characteristics of the joint distribution to be reproduced. The minerals industry focus over much of the past twenty years has been on cost reduction and production growth supported, but not driven, by technology improvements. Mergers and acquisitions, and the demands of financial markets, have been high priority items whereas research and development and technology based innovation have received less attention and have been cut back in many companies. Technology improvements will be critical if the industry is to make progress on the stated aims of improving energy efficiency, reducing water usage and maximising recovery from deposits. They will also be important for improving capital efficiency and in treating difficult deposits. However the role technology based innovation will play both in the overall industry, and within individual companies, during the next decade is quite uncertain. There are major challenges in progressing technology based innovation in an industry with limited technical resources which is dominated by long life high capital operations. Specific opportunities for energy and productivity improvements exist but face significant technical and structural barriers that need to be overcome if the industry is to significantly improve performance. Current evidence suggests that changes in approach will be needed for these improvements to be realised. Recent studies in the United States and Canada have highlighted the wide range of energy performance across the industry and the scope for marked improvement from both incremental improvements and increased research and development. Comminution, material transportation and underground mine ventilation were identified as high priority areas. Opportunities within these areas are discussed both in respect of specific technologies and in how they may change performance. The role of open innovation as a source of new technology is also discussed. This is an abstract only. No full paper was prepared for this presentation.

Project financing challenges caused by declining commodity prices have heightened the need to improve project metrics such as minimising capital payback and maximising net present value (NPV). Khnaiguiyah Mining Company (KMC) recognised the need to improve early cash flows at their Khnaiguiyah zinc-copper project after initial studies showed the project could not provide the desired financial outcomes necessary to compete for investment dollars in the current market.A significant improvement to the project cash flow in early years was realised through simultaneous optimisation of cut-off grade, mining sequence and strategic stockpiling. This improvement was achieved by accelerating mining in the pits, stockpiling lower value material and feeding higher value material directly to the plant. The schedule required higher mining and stockpile capacities than the sequential mine plan although minimal change occurred in the definition of ore and waste as measured by tonnes and grade. The practicality of the strategic schedule was demonstrated by implementation in the production plan with excellent conformance.CITATION:Thobaven, D J, 2014. The OK orebody comprises a steep dipping narrow quartz reef averaging 0.4 m in width hosted in basalt and gabbro with porphyry bars cross-cutting through it. The following paper tracks the mining of this orebody, challenges encountered, measures undertaken to address these challenges and changes in mining conditions and methods as the mine matured in both depth and age. The initial mining method was narrow vein hand held shrink stoping accessed by shaft, that over the period of the mines life was superseded by gallery stoping, shrink stoping and ultimately mechanised narrow vein long hole sublevel open stoping. The reasoning behind the change in mining methods is detailed, including safety and cost benefits. The transition presented many challenges that were overcome, resulting in the successful development of a narrow vein long hole stoping method. The lessons learnt during the transition period and the practices and principles developed for successful mining of narrow vein orebodies using long-hole open stoping methods are summarised in this paper. The final section of the paper takes a retrospective view of how the knowledge gained through the mining of the OK orebody would be applied to a new mine containing an orebody of this type, with consideration given to the initial excavation design, equipment selection, mining sequence, geotechnical investigations and mining method used.

Bauxite was discovered in the Kimberley in 1965 by an Amax field crew. Reserves of 230 million tons, of bauxite. averaging 47% total alumina on Mitchell Plateau and 980 million tons averaging 36% total alumina on Cape Bougainville have been indicated by the results of drilling and bulk sampling. Laterite which contains the bauxite deposits caps basalt and interbedded sandstone and siltstone of the Carson Volcanics formation. Bauxite on Mitchell Plateau is 3.2 metres thick on average and is underlain successively by nodular ironstone, clay and basalt. The major components of the bauxite are gibbsite,boehmite, hematite and goethite containing some alumina, anatase and clay minerals. Quartz and vanadium oxide are minor constituents. Boehmite and hematite are concentrated near the surface, whereas gibbsite and goethite predominate at depth. The bauxite profile consists of ferru- ginous, pisolitic and gibbsitic zones with increasing depth. Cape Bougainville bauxite is 8.6 metres thick on average and of tubular structure; its mineralogy is relatively uniform..

Through an ambitious but relatively low-cost program of marine fieldwork, laboratory investigations and technology-transfer and training activities, three Indonesia-Australia-led marine expeditions were undertaken aboard KR Baruna Jaya VIII between 2001 and 2003. These IASSHA (Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity) cruises have sought to discover and investigate a variety of potential ore forming hydrothermal systems in a range of tectonic settings. All cruises have been successful, both scientifically and from the point of view of training, creation of capabilities and capacity building for such research in Indonesia. Over 60 scientists and technicians from Indonesian and Australian institutions and agencies have been involved. Three new sites and a possible fourth site of hydrothermal activity were discovered in the Sangihe arc in northern Sulawesi. Surveys in the Tomini basin tested a hypothesis based on previous data which suggested this might be an isolated anoxic, brine-filled basin over 2000 m deep where igneous heat sources existed to generate hydrothermal mineralisation. The bay, however, was found to be open to adjacent deep ocean circulation, and there was no evidence of massive base metal sulfides. Subdued evidence of hydrothermal activity was found in the Sunda Strait associated with the famous Krakatau volcano and the extension of the seismically active Semangko Fault. The BANDAMIN program (Indonesia-Germany) covered a portion of the Banda arc in eastern Indonesia, and also found evidence of recent hydrothermal activity and epithermal sulfide mineralisation.

A series of petrological studies were carried out on the characteristics of alteration and mineralisation in mainly structural-controlled (Deep Star, Meikle, Deep Post) and predominantly lithological-controlled (Post-Betze-Screamer and West Leeville) gold deposits in the northern district of the Carlin trend, Nevada. Alteration and mineralisation in these deposits are hosted in a sequence of calcareous clastic units of the Devonian Popovich Formation, into which have been emplaced a number of Jurassic intrusions, and syn- to post-mineral Eocene dikes. Four hydrothermal events have been recognised in these deposits: an initial Devonian base metal system and early diagenesis; a Mississippian stage of alteration in conjunction with burial metamorphism; contact and hydrothermal alteration and base metal-gold mineralisation associated with the emplacement of the Jurassic intrusions; and a Carlin-style gold system related to Eocene magmatism.

Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database. Backfilling was introduced in 1985 and several potential spin-offs were expected. These included improved local strata control for fall of ground and rockburst conditions, regional benefits in rock mass stability and mine ventilation optimisation.

Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.
