Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015. Epithermal gold is hosted by late Middle Miocene Okiduse Volcanics on Woodlark Island. Dating of associated alteration minerals indicate mineralisation to be broadly contemporaneous with volcanism (12.2 - 12.5 m.y.) and is probably related to subduction of the Solomon Sea plate along the Trobriand Trench. Mineralisation is polymetallic and structurally controlled. Pyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor chalcopyrite occur in steeply dipping fracture zones and/or hydrothermal breccia bodies associated with mixed clay-pyrite alteration envelopes. These envelopes occur within a terrane of regionally propylitised high-K, calc-alkaline andesites and related epizonal subvolcanics. Gangue minerals include quartz, calcite, dolomite and minor anhydrite. High level advanced argillic alteration and siliceous cap rocks are not present but may have been eroded off the top of the system. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data suggest that the carbonates and paragenetically associated auriferous base metal sulphides probably deposited from an isotopically evolved (+8%. 180) reduced hydrothermal fluid sourced from underlying sedimentary rocks. The fluid was predominantly of low salinity (0-4 wt % NaCl equivalent) and had a temperature of about 270¦C at the time of boiling and mineral deposition.

A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. Deformed and annealed single crystals of aluminium (9) and cadmium (10) first start to recrystallize along slip planes and in deformation twins.The present work deals with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformatjon by creep.Two factors enter into these experiments that were not met with in other work on this subject. The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

Reports of delays and cost blowouts in major study and construction projects are becoming increasingly prevalent in the resources industry. This is mainly being attributed to an escalating cost environment associated with the increased number of projects in the development to construction pipeline and a scarcity of competent skilled resources to deliver these projects. However, not all this effect can be directly attributed to the current environment. Historically the mining industry has not performed well in its ability to deliver projects according to the financial and physical parameters forecast in the feasibility study process. To manage the risks associated with delivery of major projects, resource companies need to ensure they use a standardised approach to management of their project development to satisfy project objectives and enable more efficient use of the increasingly limited available resources. Each discrete step in advancing the project from scoping study to operations needs to be integrated, reducing the amount of rework and duplication. This paper is primarily a consolidation of existing ideas on project management systems but also introduces new concepts to solve current issues. It describes the basic components of a typical mining project, the issues that commonly arise, the key attributes, and critical steps required for an effective integrated project management system covering projects from initial scoping studies through to project commissioning and operation. This paper focuses on technical study components of the mine development project with allowance for transitioning to design and construction and operation phases.

In 2003, Independence Group NL purchased the Long Shaft Nickel Mine complex (Long) in Kambalda, Western Australia. Lightning Nickel, the nickel operating arm of Independence Group, faced considerable challenges operating the mine, with the most significant challenge being able to prove that the remnant ore at Long and the associated orebodies could be mined safely and efficiently. Given the seismic history at Long, the magnitude of these challenges could not be underestimated. In an effort to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the flatter orebodies, traditional methods such as room and pillar were dismissed. A method consisting of transverse sills, butting into each other was proposed. To stop fill material from the first sill rilling into the adjoining sill, it was proposed to backfill the sills with pumped cement fill. The capital cost of the fill plant was estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million and the cost for cement alone was $1.0 million per annum. Shotcrete was already an extremely useful tool in dealing with the widely variable stress environment, but was to be used in an innovative manner that would enable the full extraction of a tabular section of the Victor South orebody. A layer of shotcrete, approximately 100 mm thick, was to be sprayed on the up dip wall of the initial development sill. The sill was to be backfilled with ænormalÆ development waste and ætoppedÆ with sand backfill. The next sill, ie slightly up dip and alongside, was to be mined along the shotcrete boundary wall. With respect to wall stability, the premise was that the shotcrete wall would stay in place and prevent the backfill (development waste and sand) from rilling into the adjoining development. It was also proposed that any breaches of the shotcrete wall would be repaired using shotcrete before substantial inflow of backfill into the ænewÆ development. This paper describes the development and implementation of this mining method, as well as some of the associated financial aspects.

The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

Wet mining of auriferous gravels at L & MÆs Waikaka operation in Southland creates spoil dumps derived from stripping of a clay rich overburden, tailings from past dredging and the processing of auriferous sands and gravels. Over recent times, spoil dumps have slumped on six occasions, threatening the viability of the wet mining operation. Close examination of slump morphology, coupled with the sequence of material placement and rate of dumping suggested a mechanism associated with undrained failure of a 2 m layer of silt and sand tails forming the base of dumps.Commencing with some information on the geotechnical properties of source overburden, back analysis of failure morphology and sequence and development of undrained loading conditions from first principals, the most likely failure mechanism and factors controlling failure were defined. Based on analysis results, a scheme to stabilise the lowwall dumps was developed and implemented, augmented by continuous monitoring of pore pressures in the basal wet tails, and laboratory testing for confirmation of computed material properties.Lowwall spoil stability has improved since implementation involving changes to the method of spoil loading, and modification of wet tails composition to improve permeability and drainage of the basal wet tails under load. The method and approach to prediction and verification of failure mechanism provide a sound basis for continued mining of deeper auriferous gravels.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. The paper argues that at near peak solar illumination, a system for field deployment at the required sensitivity is viable using only commercial off-the-shelf components.CITATION:Job, A T, Edgar, M L and McAree, P R, 2017. Geoscientific information management enables the capture, management and delivery of the original geoscientific observations and measurements of the earth’s natural resources. However, original observations and measurements are worth nothing if the quality and integrity of the data can’t be guaranteed. Geoscientific information is one of the fundamental assets enabling miners to make confident and accurate business decisions, whether that is defining a resource model, performing reconciliation, delivering ore reserve reports or meeting environmental compliance requirements. Without access to reliable, validated or verified data it increases the risk of miners using incorrect information for reporting and compliance. Industry codes, such as JORC, or government regulations, such as environmental compliance requirements, must be adhered to and companies should be able to confidently report to these standards. Without having a robust information management framework in place, it becomes a challenge to make trustworthy decisions, report confidently and reduce the risk of non-compliance. As a key initiative, good data governance should form one part of a miner’s information management strategy. Within the mining industry it is common for companies to only consider technology tools as the key focus for compliance whereas a mature information management focus will additionally consider people and process. All three pillars are critical for a miner to have confidence in their data driven decisions. This paper discusses an industry framework for best-practice geoscientific information management based on the observations gathered from analysing data management practices within the mining industry. It focuses on how the three pillars of people, process and technology are crucial elements to improve operational decisions and ensure companies are compliant.

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. The Sams Creek gold deposit near Takaka in northwest Nelson was discovered in 1974 by CRA Exploration (CRAE) geologists. CRAE recognised the potential of the area and subsequently undertook a comprehensive exploration programme of geological mapping, soil and rock-chip sampling, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling. Exploration defined sporadic gold mineralisation contained entirely within a deformed and hydrothermally altered, peralkaline granite porphyry dyke with a seven kilometre strike length, and up to 60 m thickness. Rock chip samples indicated extensive and economically significant gold grades over approximately one kilometre strike of the dyke at Main Zone prospect. CRAE completed 30 diamond drill holes at this prospect and defined a limited resource. Oceana Gold Limited recommenced active exploration at the Sams Creek Project in late 2002, focusing on improving the geological understanding and known resource at Main Zone. Completion of 1041 m diamond drilling successfully increased the estimated resource to 10.7 Mt @ 2.12 g/t Au containing 729 000 oz at a 0.7 g/t cut off. A further campaign of 1560 m diamond drilling was undertaken in 2003 - 2004 to extend the resource and test the continuity of high grade mineralised zones. Deeper intersections of the porphyry dyke indicated geometrical complexity and grade variability similar to that observed at shallow levels. Recent research suggests that Sams Creek can be geologically classified as a variant of intrusion-related gold systems, and therefore comparable to some other, very large gold deposits. However, due to the rugged terrain and dyke geometry, surface drilling is reaching the limits of viability at Main Zone. If infill drilling continues to be successful then an underground decline may be developed to facilitate further exploration. Potential also exists along strike, where other significant gold anomalies are known but largely untested by drilling.

The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture's operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of a trapezoidal-shaped segmental tunnel lining for a recent tunnelling project in Sydney. Two- dimensional analyses, hand calculations and equipment selection defined the lining geometry and loads. The analysis, which was undertaken using 3DEC (Itasca), included a complete ring of six segments bolted together to assess the impact of imperfectly built rings. Asymmetry was induced in the analysis by unfavourable positioning of segments within construction tolerances. Model output includes displacement and stress within the entire ring and normal, shear and bending moments at the joints. For the case analysed, the results suggest a 10 mm construction tolerance increases normal and shear stresses along the radial joints by approximately 25 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively and up to a doubling of the induced moments.
