In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). Active geothermal systems occur widely in Sumatra and in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) ofNew Zealand. There are also many occurrences of epithermal gold mineralisation in Sumatra, some of which are economic. Minor sub-economic occurrences of gold have been reported in the TVZ but none have yet been mined. There are both similarities and differences in the nature of the active geothermal systems and mineral deposits in Sumatra and New Zealand, which can be systematically related to the tectonic setting. The thicker crust and consequent predominance of silicic volcanism in New Zealand leads to hydrothermal systems which are little eroded and with limited lateral outflows. The systems in Sumatra are of mixed character, with some of the characteristics of those in andesitic island arcs such as Java or the Philippines, e.g. a higher proportion of systems with identifiable acid magmatic volatiles, a greater potential for deep erosion and lateral outflows than in New Zealand; but modified by the more oblique component of subduction and thickened crust so that some are localised in volcano-tectonic depressions and consequently have high piezometric levels of primary hydrothermal fluid. The unusual occurrence of calcic zeolites in veins associated with gold mineralisation in Sumatra is thought to be indicative of æsatelliteÆ boiling zones along de-gassed hydrothermal outflows.

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. "The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.Trends amongst service providers will be put forward as well as developing options and alternatives. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. Beneficiation of Nickel Lateritic Ore from Montes Claros de Goißs, Brazil Beneficiation is a key factor for both technical and economical aspects of industrial processing of nickel lateritic ores. A combination of comminution, classification and concentration stages are usually used to upgrade the metallurgical plant feed, thus resulting in both capital and operating cost reductions. This paper describes the testwork conducted on Montes Claros nickel lateritic ore in order to investigate the potential for upgrading. A comprehensive laboratory testing program included crushing, scrubbing, screening, grinding, gravity separation and attritioning, for both saprolitic and limonitic ore types from the Montes Claros deposit. The results indicated a clear potential for such an upgrade, which was later validated in a pilot plant program.

The Waimumu area, 12 km southwest of Gore, is underlain by the Gore Lignite Measures, an early Tertiary fluvial sequence approximately 500 m thick resting on Triassic-Jurassic argillitic basement. The Waimumu Quartz Gravels (Pliocene) have been deposited locally and are in part due to the localised reworking of the Gore Lignite Measures. Structurally the area is dominated by the Dunsdale Fault System, a steeply dipping series of NE trending reverse faults (Isaac and Lindqvist, 1990). The Belle-Brook, Hedgehope and Parker Road sites sampled are adjacent to the downthrown (east) side of the Hedgehope Fault.The authigenic gold-sulphide association at Belle-Brook was discovered in 1987 (Falconer, 1987: Clough and Craw, 1989). Despite a very limited amount of alluvial mining a significant quantity of authigenic marcasite has developed. Authigenic sulphide trace element analysis has shown anomalous amounts of As, Ni, Cr and to a lesser extent Zn, Pb and eu (Table 1). It has been established that the nickel occurs as a colloform banded Ni sulphide, possibly bravoite, within the marcasite (Figures 1 & 2). Arsenic and nickel (re)mobilisation are well documented in the literature. Generally As and heavy metals are mobilised in the groundwater as a result of the oxidation of sulphides (ie as a result of mining). At Belle-Brook it is reasonable to assume the authigenic sulphide trace element composition reflects either localised groundwater contamination or hydrothermal mineralisation. This poster presents some preliminary findings.

Siliceous float sampled in the Wafi River by CRA Exploration in 1977 assayed 22 g/t Au and 89 g/t Ag. Follow up in 1979 led to the discovery of outcropping mineralisation now known as Zone A. Soil sampling in 1980 and 1982 outlined a 350 m by 400 m area of >1 g/t Au at Zone A and smaller areas at Zones B, C and D. Thirty-one diamond holes were drilled between 1983 and 1986. Elders Resources continued evaluation of Zone A under a farming agreement between 1988 and 1990. Mineralised diorite porphyry was discovered in 1990 by drilling conceptual targets 500 m to the NE of Zone A. Evaluation of this copper-gold porphyry became the main focus of exploration for the next five years and a substantial resource was outlined within a single, discrete body. A review of the paths to project development in late-1995 highlighted the need for increased resources via a second mineralised porphyry and/or an additional resource of Zone A size to make the project viable. It was concluded that the greatest immediate potential for increasing the resource inventory was at Zone A itself where the mineralisation was open in all directions. Detailed mapping and drill core logging lead to the geologic and structural models being revised in early-1996. The objectives of the 1996 drill program were to extend the Zone A resource, to test for continuity of mineralisation westwards to Zone B, to better define the controls on gold mineralisation and to delineate high-grade blocks amenable to selective mining by infill drilling and 3D orebody modelling. The last drill hole of 1996 intersected 30 m at 4.6 g/t Au from 273 m in WR147, deep in the western limit of Zone A. This intersection gave impetus to continue drill testing towards Zone B. In April 1997, hole WR154 was drilled 100 m to the west of WR147 and intersected 20 m at 8.5 g/t Au and 70 m at 11.0 g/t Au at similar depths near the diatreme contact. Drill hole WR155 was then drilled 100 m to the west of WR154 and intersected 86m at 5.7 g/t Au and WR159 drilled 100 m to the south of WR154 intersected 36 m at 9.2 and 50 m at 4.4 g/t Au. A significant zone of essentially blind, high-grade gold was discovered beneath the dipping flank of a poorly mineralised diatreme in what became known as the Link Zone. The long history of evaluation has been driven by the conviction of a dedicated team that a mineralised system of the size and complexity of Wafi with strongly anomalous gold in outcrops over the entire Mount Golpu area must contain economic mineralisation hidden within it. The keys which redefined the direction of exploration and lead to the discovery of the blind, high-grade gold Link Zone were, in our view, the critical review of the project status, detailed geological and structural studies to define clear exploration targets and the necessary funding and persistence to carry this through.

The Australian mining sector is undergoing a significant transformation with the adoption of advanced technology to the operational landscape. This has highlighted a critical disconnect between our traditional educational systems and the skill requirements of working with these advanced technologies. This paper aims to provide a behavioural science analysis of how the traditional manufacturing mindset, deeply rooted in our educational frameworks from primary to tertiary education, registered training organisations (RTOs), and in-house learning and development, is misaligned with the needs of today’s technologically advanced mining operations. Originating in the industrial revolution, the manufacturing mindset prioritised efficiency, mass production, and the division of labour. In educational institutions, this translated into an emphasis on rote learning, linear examinations, and a rigid adherence to processes and procedures. Such a system, while effective in producing a workforce suited for repetitive and predictable tasks, falls short in fostering skills like problem-solving, adaptability, flexibility, and coping with change – skills that are increasingly vital in a mining sector dominated by automation, robotics, and AI. The paper discusses how the focus on disciplined adherence to standard work procedures and processes in educational and training programs has inadvertently stifled creativity and autonomy in learners. This issue is compounded in the workplace, where employees, having been conditioned to operate within strict guidelines, now face the challenge of adapting to environments where autonomous decision-making and creative problem solving are crucial. In essence, the traditional approach to education and training has prepared individuals for a world of work that no longer exists. This paper advocates for a whole of pipeline approach, grounded in behavioural science, to revamp mining education and training. It highlights the importance of understanding and influencing the behavioural aspects of learning and recommends for an approach that promotes diversity, critical thinking, and adaptability, preparing the workforce to excel in the rapidly changing landscape of the Australian mining sector.

Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

Following the successful completion of a marked ball test defining the potential wear benefits the high chrome alloys may offer against forged steel, as well as laboratory test work investigating changes in pulp chemistry and improvements to metallurgical performance, a plant trial was commissioned at NewcrestÆs Ridgeway concentrator. The paper briefly describes these results.Newcrest decided to convert their media charge by the top-up method. To monitor the trial a sampling protocol was put in place whereby the pulp chemistry was monitored before, during and after the purge. The metallurgical shift data was analysed using various statistical methods to determine if the metallurgical performance had improved with the change in grinding media. While the analysis indicated that the metallurgy had improved, not all of the benefits could be assigned to the change in grinding media alone. However, the combination of reduction in media wear and the increases in copper and gold recoveries suggested that it was economically viable to operate with high chrome grinding media.As with many trials of this nature the prevailing economic conditions are fluid and a decision was made to revert back to forged steel grinding media in an effort to reduce operating costs. It was further agreed that Magotteaux could monitor the pulp chemistry and metallurgical changes in this reverse trial to confirm the results observed in the earlier conversion to high chrome grinding media.CITATION:Greet, C J, Hitchen, C and Kinal, J, 2012. Any value addition to the mineral sands in the Murray Basin (Australia) will generate waste that needs to be disposed of safely. For example, conversion of ilmenite and synthetic rutile to titania (TiO2) pigment would generate large amounts of environmentally undesirable elements. Processing of U+Th containing zircon sands to zirconia or to higher purity zircon would generate a low-level radioactive waste. In this study it is proposed that one way to circumvent the waste problem could be to contain such waste in magnesium-based (Sorel) cements. Containment of waste in magnesium cements is an attractive idea especially for the mineral sand processing companies that could operate in the Murray Basin in the future, because the required magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride may be made cheaply from the saline waters encountered during mining operations. The magnesium cement production process is also far less energy intensive than the Portland cement production process. The results of this study indicate that mixing a waste stream with a slurry of magnesium cement before being discharged to the disposal area would contain the waste in a æconcrete-likeÆ structure, resistant to dispersion by wind and moderate rain. However, some loss of strength and increased leaching of impurities, Mg and Cl could take place in wet climate areas. Ongoing research is being concentrated to develop a new process for making water-resistant magnesium cement.

"The primary control objective of the project is to achieve milling optimisation by ensuring that the energy available for rock breakage is used as efficiently as possible. This is achieved by increasing the level of mill filing until a process constraint is reached. Stable operation against this limiting constraint is then maintained to ensure long-term optimised operation.Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control optimisation presents a number of challenges. SAG mills have multiple inputs that are used to control multiple outputs (MIMO process). Secondly, the SAG mill loading process is a ‘high inertia’ process that can be approximated as an integrating process. This means that it is open-loop unstable. The hybrid control strategy presented implements an advanced ‘load stabiliser’, which transforms this integrator process into a more manageable first order process, which can be steered stably against the constraints. This SGS hybrid Expert control strategy implemented on both SAG mills at the Porgera concentrator therefore consists of two integrated parts responsible for:stabilising the mill load to a targetdriving the mill load target to the maximum determined by the process constraints (eg maximum power draw) to maximise efficiency and throughput. A comparative study is done between the operation of the plant for a period of a month before and a month after the implementation of this strategy. There are circumstances where the ordinary techniques of experimental variography in geostatistics û now in common use despite their recent origin û are not quite successful. This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Possible application of this technique will be outlined when it will be seen that there are still problems remaining to be solved in its use for economic evaluation of deposits with irregular mineralisation.

This paper presents the results of a test program evaluating the impact of sample mass on the precision of Stage 1 gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test results. Four ore types ranging from low to high GRG contents were the focus of testing. A method to predict the influence of sample mass on the confidence limits of the Stage 1 GRG test result is demonstrated. The results suggest that although small samples tend to overestimate Stage 1 GRG in samples with low gravity gold values due to higher mass pull to concentrate, such samples can give acceptable estimates of the Stage 1 GRG content with focussed sample treatment protocols.CITATION:Giblett, A and Napier-Munn, T J, 2015. In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.
