The flow function of an iron ore material governs its flowability characteristics in material handling chains within the resource industry. A uniaxial compression test is able to obtain a flow function more rapidly comparing to the Jenike direct shear test; nevertheless, the results often exhibit lower rankings using the former method. This study aims to investigate the fundamental stress states within the test specimen that lead to this phenomenon, and to introduce a new uniform density specimen preparation method for a uniaxial compression test, in order to achieve comparative flow functions as for a Jenike direct shear test. The minimisation of the wall friction effect and achievement of the critical state when preparing a uniaxial specimen are explicitly discussed. Experimental investigations on flow functions of a suite of Australian iron ore samples were conducted using both the uniform density uniaxial compression test and the Jenike direct shear test. Results from both methods were found to be comparable, providing the specimen exhibits cohesive flow behaviours. It is possible to divide industrial minerals into four general categories: 1. fuels, 2. construction materials, 4. agricultural minerals, and 4. industrial minerals. It is proposed to ignore the fuels in the context of this paper and deal in general terms with the others. Mining companies have often considered getting into the industrial mineral business because they can see a resource development with good growth and consistent profits. However, many mining companies being conversant with the metallic side of the industry have spent sleepless nights determining which industrial minerals are most suited for their particular situation. Some have got into the business for the wrong reasons and wished they had never heard of it. Others have successfully adapted to the industrial minerals philosophy and now operate in both metallic and industrial mineral arenas. There is a large difference between firstly, the philosophy and secondly, the functions of being in the industrial minerals business as opposed to metallicÆs. The philosophies can be considered in parallel but it is necessary to clearly have an appreciation of the dominant influences that affect industrial minerals.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

The Vale Ferro Carajßs S11D project in northern Brazil is based on the movement of unprecedented volumes of waste and ore for mobile in-pit crushing and conveying or ætrucklessÆ systems. In peak years, the system is intended to handle a combined 160 Mt of material.The planning and implementation of the first such system for Vale, in a remote greenfield site, utilising the services of a range of international study, design and supply partners has provided a unique set of technical and project delivery challenges. The lessons from these are of value to the industry as the trend to remote and high-volume operations continues.This paper describes the key features of the mining system and documents the challenges and mitigations for important technical, cultural and project delivery issues that have arisen. SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE MEDAL TO LAURENCE CHARLES BRODlE-HALL, C.M.G.The Institute Medal is awarded to a select band of people who have rendered great service to the mining industry and the community. Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

Block caving is an underground mining method that can provide high production capacities at low operating costs. This enables the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies and attracts industry towards the method. Block caving operations require significant initial capital investment and predictable cave propagation is crucial to safety and economic success. Lack of access to observe the caving process hinders our ability to learn how the rock mass and geological structures are reacting to mining. Virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) enables the integration and investigation of multiple, large caving data sets and provides a viable alternative to visualise rock mass response without physical access to the cave. Point instrumentation is incapable of providing an overview of cave performance and seismic monitoring, while providing an overview of the rock mass and the response of structures to caving, is only useful when linked to the caving activities. The integration of point instrumentation data with seismic monitoring information, coupled with scientific visualisation of the mining system in a virtual reality environment, provides a powerful means for understanding caving performance.This paper describes the use of a VRSV module at UNSW Australia, designed for investigating the block cave mining system from a case study operation. This module has been used to investigate the location and chronological evolution of seismicity to understand sources of damage resulting in seismic space-time sequences (SSTS) in the caving system. The events within an SSTS represent damage that is spatially and temporally related. An SSTS group represents a collection of microseismic events from a reasonably competent region of the rock mass that has experienced a stress change significant enough to cause sequential damage. SSTS group locations have been seen to be the path of subsequent cave propagation. Thus, SSTS analysis enables insight to further our understanding of rock mass damage in caving geomechanics through analysis of historic data. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has made remarkable strides and has witnessed a suite of achievements over its ~65-year history; especially in the last 15 years, since organised work began for the erstwhile fragmented sampling community (2003). Theory and practice have been very well exposed and disseminated, as witnessed in the successful series of the World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB) events and other dedicated sampling and mining conferences in Australia and South Africa. At this WCSB8 occasion we fittingly devote a section of our conference to celebrate the life and monumental achievement of Pierre Gy, the originator of the Theory of Sampling; a special issue of TOS Forum was recently published to the same purpose. But TOS is most emphatically not a finished work.Here I try to look into the future with a personal view: TOS – what’s next? Commensurate with this objective there is offered some out-of-the-box thinking. The purpose is to try to zoom in on probable additional future aspects of TOS and its application compared to the first 15 years of our common journey. There are bound to be lacunae here-and-there across the vast application horizon delineated, which is as it should be, as this lecture is meant to initiate a broad(er) debate – and readers may agree with all, parts, or none of the topics presented. Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. A review is presented of developments in mill liners to improve performance in terms of wear, impact, as well as mill grind and throughput. These developments are in response to the growth in size of SAG mills and the use of larger ball loadings and ball sizes in modern SAG milling practice. Shell liner developments include specific mechanical design features such as special bolting, directed metal flow to prolong liner life and a focus on the process aspects of the mills to provide more effective grinding motion with reduced wasteful ball-on-liner impacts. Grate design developments aim to provide high throughput of material, especially in the larger size fractions, while providing good impact and wear life. Curved pulp lifters are designed to ensure, at high mill speeds, complete discharge of coarse solids from the mill.

A knowledge of the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in slag as a function of composition and temperature is necessary if effective strategies are to be devised to maximise the recovery of cobalt in nonferrous smelting processes. This work reviews previous studies and shows that comparison and evaluation of the results is hampered by variations in the choice of standard states for the species. Published results have been recalculated to a common set of standard states with a preferred value for the Gibbs free energy of formation of cobalt oxide. It has been shown that the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide referred to the solid standard state in iron silicate slags is approximately two, at temperatures from 1523 to 1623¦K. It is suggested that some contradictory results are most likely due to errors in the measured partial pressure of oxygen.

The Leigh Creek Coalfield is owned and operated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia to supply fuel to the Northern Power Station. To supply electricity at lowest cost, a costing and decision process that establishes the role of the Leigh Creek Coalfield in the overall system planning and operation is required. The costing is integrated in that it is based not just on a particular mine plan but on the wider need to supply a particular electrical demand. The detail costing has evolved over time from manual to main-frame computer to microcomputer techniques. Now there is a choice between fast consistent costs and a slower but more detailed and flexible costing.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Waikato North Head 30 km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook and Taharoa 70 km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan.   Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3 km off shore through two underwater pipelines. Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook 18 km through a 200 mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.   A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

The New Zealand Steel Ironsand Slurry Pipeline was successfully commissioned in February 1986. The project includes 18 km of high pressure, polyurethane lined buried pipe. McConnell Dowell Constructors Limited has developed a coupling which has allowed this pipeline to be fully welded. The design and development of the coupling and its application on this project is discussed.

A volcanic sequence is described from the Golden Cross Mine, Waihi, New Zealand. The sequence includes seven lithostratigraphic units comprising flow and pyroclastic units of Coromandel Group andesite and dacite and overlying Whitianga Group dacite and rhyolite which is intruded by the Golden Cross dacite porphyry and rhyolite dykes. The sequence is mineralised and is unconformably overlain by two post-mineral units, the lacustrine Waitekauri beds and Omahine Subgroup andesite.   Detailed structural analysis of mine data has identified four deformational events (D 1-D4) and related these to the gold-silver mineralising events. Faulting was coeval with the mineralization and directly controlled the development, localisation, style and geometry of the ore shoots. Mineralization developed in competent lithologies where dilation occurred during faulting. The Empire Fault is the master shear which controlled fluid flow. Mineralised veining developed in response to tectonic pulses occurring at slightly different stages as represented by the underground Empire vein complex and the open pit vein array. The mineralising events culminated with the deposition of barren calcite veins. Post-mineral movement along the Western Boundary fault appears to have offset the orebody.

It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone; its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend. Coals can be blended, which alone are poorly, Coking, but which have compensating features. Blending also allows better exploitation of coking coal reserves. Several applications of blending have been reviewed with regard to coal producers and exporters, as well as coal users. The possibility of extracting a coking coal fraction from fuel coals is discussed. Blending systems and the coking of coal are also briefly reviewed.

Indian iron ores with less than 62 per cent Fe are currently unexploited, except for a few sectors which export them to foreign countries. It is anticipated that by 2012 the countryÆs domestic steel production is likely to rise to the tune of 60 million tonnes per annum. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to utilise not only the existing high-grade deposits but it is also necessary to look into exploiting the leftover iron ores of lower grades. Hence, reserves with Fe content 62 per cent and below (particularly the ores with In the present paper, an attempt has been made to beneficiate three different types of low-grade iron ores selected from three different parts (states) of the country. In the paper, alternative routes for beneficiation and effective utilisation have been tested using different techniques in the laboratory in an attempt to match their (Al2O3/SiO2) ratio after thorough characterisation and liberation studies. The paper also encompasses the geological formations, occurrences and distribution of Indian iron ores as well as highlighting the problems associated with the fines, possible metallurgical routes, and their market segregation from the perspective of end users.

The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing.
