Manganous oxide is readily soluble in concentrated ammonia solutions containing ammonium salts. Lixiviants of ammonia and ammonium carbamate permit ready extraction of manganese from reduced ores and the manganese in such solutions may be precipitated by heating to transform the carbamate to carbonate. THE widespread occurrence of manganese in low grade oxide and carbonate ores not amenable to mechanical concentration has led to extensive investigations of hydrometallurgical methods for producing a pure manganese compound suitable for further treatment. Manganese carbonate is the preferable compound. This product when fully crystalline and of not too fine crystal size is easily filtrable and stable in air. It can be converted to other compounds such as the oxides by heating in air or can be reacted with acids for producing salts. A useful hydrometallurgical process must produce relatively concentrated solutions that can be purified easily, reagents must be cyclically used, and heat requirements must be small. Neither the ammonium sulphate nor sulphur dioxide leaching processes that have been tested extensively fulfill these requirements. Other heretofore proposed processes have obvious limitations and have not been tried on a large scale. The present process is based on the discovery by the writer of a new group of aqueous manganese-ammonia complex solutions highly concentrated in ammonia, which permit rapid solution of manganous oxide to concentrations of 80 to 100 g Mn per liter and from which a fully crystalline, easily filtrable manganese carbonate is precipitated by the addition of carbon dioxide and partial ammonia removal. Although the process may be carried out with many ammonium salts, commercial advantages dictate the use of ammonium carbamate, which is obtained when CO2 is passed into concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonia. If the carbamate is used, the only reagents, ammonia and CO2, are volatile and may therefore be recovered from solutions and residues by heating, thus eliminating washing and extensive evaporation. Impurities are controlled easily as most metal oxides are either insoluble in the lixiviant or fail to precipitate with the manganese carbonate. Others are controlled by sulphide addition. The process has been tested extensively on a small scale on a wide variety of ores, including Three Kids, Artillery Peak, Cuyuna, and Chamberlain, as repre-

A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass. IT. is, of course, expected that manufacture of the various metal powders should involve numerous methods adapted to the specific characteristics of the metals themselves. Several methods for powdering a particular metal may be available, but the physical characteristics of the powder as produced by the several methods may be quite different. In the final analysis, the application of the metal powder dictates the physical properties that the metal powder must possess, and this, to a very large extent, will determine which of several possible methods of. manufacture is adopted. Sometimes powder of the same metal is produced by more than one method, each powder having specific characteristics .that make it particularly suitable for its application. For purposes of classification, the various methods of powdering metals can be grouped as follows: 1. Machining. 2. Milling (by ball mills, stamps, attrition mills, etc.). 3. Shotting (pouring molten metal into water, air, etc.). 4. Granulation (by stirring molten metal while solidifying). 5. Atomizing (disintegrating by steam, compressed air, etc.). 6. Condensation of metal vapor. 7. Reduction of oxide powders. 8. Chemical precipitation. 9. Electrolytic deposition. 10. Sintering (for producing alloy powders). 11. Formation of an alloy followed by dissolving or otherwise removing one of the alloying constituents. MACHINING Turnings, cuttings, filings, etc., are, of course, produced as by-products in machine work of various kinds, and find certain applications as metal powders. For example, iron powder so produced is used extensively as a reducing or precipitating agent and as a constituent in certain hard-finish cements.

IN GATHERING material for this chapter on Yerington and the one to follow on Silver Bell, the A.S.& R. project near Tucson, Arizona, I was fascinated at the way the two stories paralleled each other. For example, here are a few instances: (1) The first copper mining in the Yerington district of Nevada was in the late 1860's; the first in the Silver Bell area in 1873. (2) Each district was served by a branch railroad about 25 miles long from a main line of the Southern Pacific (by quizzical coincidence); and, in each instance, the railroad was later abandoned and torn up. (3) Each district had a sizable blast-furnace smelter ten or fifteen miles from the principal mines, and in each instance the smelter was later dismantled for junk. (4) Up to 1954, the Yerington district was credited with a production of 100,000,000 lb of copper; the Silver Bell district with 80,000,000 lb. (5) In each district the entire production had come from deposits other than the low-grade ore bodies now being exploited. (6) In each instance, existence of the low-grade deposits of the Porphyry type was recognized in the period circa1910-1914 and a substantial amount of exploratory drilling had been done, on one deposit at Yerington and on two at Silver Bell. (7) In each instance, the properties containing the Porphyry ore were acquired by a strong company (Anaconda Copper Mining Company at Yerington and American Smelt-

Discussion of the paper of F. C. LANGENBERG and R. G. WEBBER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 291 to 300. HENRY M. HOWE, Bedford Hills, N. Y.-The results here given are of great interest and are welcome as forming another rivet to increase the stability of our present theories of the constitution and properties of steel. The important discovery is that the hysteresis increases with the fineness of the structure, that is to say with the extent of contact between the particles of ferrite and cementite. All of the specimens except No. 4 consist of ferrite and cementite of different degrees of intimacy of admixture. If hysteresis represents something akin to surface friction, which retards the rotation of the ferrite on the application and release of the magnetizing force, then it is only natural that it should increase as it does with the intimacy of admixture, because it is at the surface of contact of a given particle of ferrite with the neighboring particles of cementite that this friction is to be expected, and of course the extent of surface must in¬crease with the intimacy of admixture. The somewhat greater hardness of specimen 4 than of the others may perhaps he referred to the principle discussed in my paper, Why Does Lag Increase with the Temperature from Which Cooling Starts?' The furnace-cooled specimens were cooled so slowly that the influence of the initial temperature of heating is effaced. But in the air-cooled specimens we have the suggestion that the high temperature, 1,000°, from which the cooling of No. 4 started has prevented the completion of the transformation, with the result that the metal is slightly harder than any of the others. The difference is not to be explained by difference in the fineness of structure, because the whole range of fineness from No. 1 to No. 6 is accompanied by no change in hardness, the only change being an appreciable increase of hardness following the air cooling from 1,000°.

G. B. WATERHOUSE,* Buffalo, N. -Y. (written discussion?).-One of the most essential features of rail manufacture is the production of rails that will give good service and be free from failures. To this end rails are made to careful specifications and their manufacture is controlled by rigid inspection on the part of both the producing mill and the railroad or its representative, such as the Hunt special inspection referred to in the paper. Captain Hunt refers to the crescent-shape base failures and describes them as ruptures in the rail flanges extending from the outside inward toward the web. This is hardly correct and may be misleading. It has been shown, over and over again, that the base breaks originating in seams invariably start at the center of the rail base; and run longitudi-nally in varying lengths from 3 to 12 in. and sometimes longer. Most of them are from 5 to 8 in. long and then curve outward to the edge of the flange. The split at the center of the base may exist for an indefinite time and not be discovered until the break shows on top of the flange or the piece of flange breaks off. The. stresses that cause the break are explained in two ways: (1) by the eccentric bearing of the rail base, that is taking contact at one side or edge and bringing excessive strain at the center of the base which starts fracture in any seam that may he present at that point; (2) the split may be due to cross strain in the base where this member is thrown into. compression, as happens where a pair of trucks are on opposite sides of the cross tie or rail-base hearing, and the head is put in tension. A careful study of "split base breaks" shows that fully 95 per cent. occur on the tie bearing, which is further evidence that the above de-scribed causes for the initial break are probably correct. These split base breaks are almost invariably progressive, but always start at the center of the rail-base running longitudinally.

W. J. Kroll (Belgium)—Those who are acquainted with the metallurgy of our forefathers may have occasionally a good time when glancing at recent publications in which aged discoveries are unconsciously reported as novelties. We know very well, that oxygen blowing of iron has been described by old Bessemer. The author of the present article is, however, not aware of the fact that the process he describes, the fused salts scrubbing, was already used in the middle of the last century by St. Claire Deville in his attempts at making higher-purity aluminum from raw AlCl3 by sodium reduction. The same fact escaped the three investigators to whom the author refers. The technical grade AlC13 produced by St. Claire Deville from impure oxide, chlorine, and carbon (Oersted process) was contaminated with Sic4 and FeC13, which he removed on an industrial scale by various methods.' He sublimed, for instance, his chloride in contact with iron nails, or aluminum chips, or in hydrogen, which reduced the FeC13 to the less volatile FeCl2. He used also alkali-alkaline earth chlorides as a solvent for A1C13 and FeC13 in presence of iron as a reducing agent, and sublimed his purified AlC13 from solvent salts. The successors of Deville used also zinc or lead as a reducing agent. These methods were later used currently for the purification of BeCl2 and for collecting this compound in a salt bath, suitable for fusion electrolysis. More recently, the same Deville process has been described as applied to the purification of ZrCL4, as part of a method of extraction of ZrCL4 from silico zirconium, which later was reacted with FeC12 in a separate part of the equipment. According to the patent referred to3 the ZrCL4 is dissolved as a gas in a carrier salt such as alkali-alkaline earth chloride, from which it can be reclaimed in a purified form by distillation. A bath of NaCl/KCl is recommended in the specifications. The FeC12-FeC13 go in the salt solution in which raw ZrCl4 is introduced by bubbling, while Sic4 and Tic4 pass through the bath and escape in the atmosphere. purification by this salt-solvent method is thus well described. It may be worth while insisting on some minor details about which the author did not bother too much. One of these concerns the material of construction for the container. If iron is used, and if no other reducing agent is added, then it is the iron of the pot that acts as a reagent in the breakdown of FeC13 to FeCl2, and corrosion can be expected. This shows the importance of using extraneous large surface-reducing agents, of which there is a choice. Zir-

(communication to the Secretary*).¬I assume that where this valuable paper states, near its end, that "it is not possible to establish a market price, " the author means that no particular price which will fit all conditions and fields can be given. I am not in agreement with Mr. Wyer, however, that the actual value of natural gas leaseholds is "largely a matter of opinion." I would even be willing to express myself very strongly as believing that if we, as experts, cannot give anything closer than a mere opinion, our testimony or reports are not of great value to our clients. I believe, moreover, that by detailed geological examinations and with our latest knowledge of geological structure, principles of natural gas occurrence, etc., we can approach just as near a certainty in natural gas valuations as we can in oil valuations, and much more so than in the valuation of many metal prospects, in which only the upper few feet of the vein has been opened. In other words, we are getting nearer and nearer every year to bringing geology as applied to oil and gas development into the class of an exact science. Mr. Wyer's paper gives an excellent outline for methods of leasehold valuation. Being presumably intended as an outline only, it can be expanded indefinitely by a detailed discussion of the methods of valuation for the four different classes of leaseholds which he mentions: (A) "Producing;" (B) "Protective;" (C) "Reserve;" and (D) "Prospective." This classification is probably as good as can be made in practice. In the producing leaseholds in particular it is easy to establish a market price at which these leaseholds should be bought or sold. The question would arise in any case whether or not the leases are connected with a pipe line or the distance from the pipe line. Assuming that a pipe line already taps the property and that gas is already being sold for a certain figure, this price must be multiplied by the number of thousand cubic feet still "in sight" in the ground, from which is to be deducted (a) bonuses, (b) rentals, (c) royalties, (d) cost of drilling, (e) taxes and

Fe-Ni-B alloys were inresligated by X-ray diffraclion after splat quenching. Although this rapid cooling did not produce a measurable supersaturation of dissol1ed boron in either binary Fe-B or Ni-B alloys, a marked increase in dissolved boron was achieved by the splal quenching of lernary Fe-Ni-B alloys. Boron additions up to 2.0 wl pcl to Fe-13Ni and Fe-24Ni alloys cause an increase in retained austenite from 0 to 59 pet and to 92 pet, respectively. The martensitic phase in the Fe-13Ni-9 at. pct B alloy is .found to conlain about 0.6 at. pet interstitial boron, as evidenced by the tetragonality of this phase, and about 3.6 at. pct substilutional boron, us deduced from the lattice paratrieler decrease, the balance of the boron being precipitated as (Fe,Ni)aR. The austenitic Fe-Ni-B plznses also contain both interstitial and substitutional boron. Iron-Boron System. The phase diagram and related information about the solid solutions and intermediate phases in the Fe-B system are given by ansen,' Elliott.2 and Pearson.1 The equilibrium solid solubility of boron in both ferrite and austenite is quite small: the maximum solid solubility of 0.02 wt pct B (0.11 at. pct B) occurs in iron at the eutectic temperature of 1150°C. while the maximum solubility in a iron is less than 0.01 wt pct.l There is disagreement in the literature as to whether these solid solutions are substitutional or interstitial. Based on the measured activation energy of boron diffusion in iron, it appears likely that boron moves interstitially in austenite. 4 However, this observation does not rule out the possibility that some of the dissolved boron may also occupy substitutional sites in this phase. Investigations of internal friction of boron in iron have suggested that boron is interstitial there.' Shevelev, 5 on the other hand, reports a decrease in the ferrite lattice parameter with dissolved boron content, thus indicating a substitutional solution. Unfortunately. Shevelev's methods and analysis are unclear. Goldhoff and spretnak6 have measured the lattice parameters of pure iron and an Fe-0.005 wt pct B (0.027 at. pct) alloy at both room temperature (ferrite) and from 920° to 1200°C (austenite). They reporte: a lattice contraction in the ferrite of 0.0003 ± 0.0002 due to boron, thus indicating a predominately substitutional solution. Appreciable (0.0010 to 0.0060) lattice contractions were found in boron-containing austenites, but these effects were much larger than could be accounted for by the substitutional solution of all the boron present. Nickel-Boron System. Elliott 2 gives a summary of thephase diagram and recent work on this system. The solubility of boron in nickel reaches a maximum of 0.03 wt pct at the eutectic temperature of 1080°C. Iron-Nickel System. ansen' presents the equilibrium diagram for this system and also discusses the metastable austenitic and martensitic phases along with the a=? transformations. The lattice parameters of Fe-Ni ferrites have been recently redetermined by Abrahamson and Lopata.7 Their data, Fig. 1, show an unusual change in slope at about 1.7 at. pct Ni. Very few measurements of the lattice parameters of Fe-Ni martensites are available in the literature. The values of Roberts and Owen8 are considerably higher than those measured in the course of the present work: they find that a, is constant at 2.874? from 8 to 30 at. pct Ni. CONFUSION appears to exist in the discussions of fan testing because engineers do not agree on what energy should be credited to the fan in certain cases, and because certain terms that are used in the discussions seem to have double meanings. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to discuss the useful energy that should be credited to the fan and the methods of determining this energy, and to suggest changes in nomenclature for the sake of clearness. The instruments commonly used in the measurement of fan pressures are the manometer, the static tube, and the impact tube. The static tube is a tube with small pinholes in it. When connected to one leg of the manometer and placed in the air current with the holes facing at right angles to the direction of the current, this tube causes the manometer to register the static pressure, unaffected by the impact of the air. The impact tube is a tube with an opening that faces the air current. When connected to one leg of the manometer, this tube causes the manometer to register a pressure which is the static pressure modified by the impact of the flowing' air on the end of the tube. If the static tube is connected to one leg of the manometer and the impact tube to the other leg, and both instruments are inserted close together in the air current, the static pressure is eliminated and the manometer registers the impact pressure. The efficiency of a fan is the percentage of the expended power utilized in useful work. The items to be included as useful work are a matter of convention, and as the conventions are not universal I feel that the matter is open to discussion.

DURING the comminution of a brittle material in the presence of dry air, no known phase change or chemical reaction takes place. The energy changes associated with the comminution are those of the transformation of kinetic energy into heat energy and the energy absorption represented by the actual rupture of molecular and/or ionic bonds. The random nature of the actual grinding process in a tumbling-mill often precludes the effective application of a rupture force on each individual particle of brittle mineral present. The result must be a great deal of useless vibration on an atomic scale in both the brittle mineral and the grinding medium below the elastic limit, which vibration is eventually manifested as heat energy in the mill. The actual rupture of molecular, or ionic, bonds creates new surface on the brittle minerals; each square centimeter of this new surface then must possess a number of potential bonds, each of which could reform theoretically with the release of energy. The sum total of this potential energy of bonding per unit of new surface, minus bond satiation effects of the enclosing gas or liquid, must be the surface energy of the mineral. If the comminution of the brittle mineral were carried out within the chamber of a calorimeter, the energy released as heat could be determined rather accurately. Moreover, the total kinetic energy input to the comminuting mass (mineral and medium) conceivably could be derived by a suitable torquemeter and revolution counter if the whole calorimeter were revolved. The difference between these two energy figures should then represent the net energy (gross energy input—heat enerb output) used in creating new surface, gliding or slip on atomic planes, twinning, and possibly other lattice rearrangements within the mineral. If it be postulated further that with a hard, brittle crystalline material, such as quartz, the energy used to produce gliding, twinning, and other permanent lattice movements is a very small fraction of the total net energy absorbed, then this energy absorption within the grinding calorimeter can be ascribed to the creation of new surface energy alone. Such energy is, from the thermody-namic standpoint, the true effective work of the grinding device, in this case a tumbling-medium mill. The ratio of this effective work (in calories) to the total energy input (in calories) should express the thermodynamic efficiency of the comminution taking place under the conditions used in the grinding calorimeter. This approach to the measurement of the energetics of tumbling-mill grinding was suggested by some previous work by Fahrenwald and coworkers' with a laboratory ball mill and a thermometer. They measured the efficiency of grinding based on the formula: Pct Grinding Efficiency = Energy (calories) — Thermal Energy x 100 1npZ Output (calories) Energy input (calories) Efficiencies thus measured, while grinding quartz sand, ranged from 19.7 pct to 7.4 pct. Cook in 1915,' used this approach to the problem of grinding efficiencies in stamp batteries and obtained the energy input by stamp weights times drop distances and the energy output by means of thermometers and pulp flow rates. He calculated that 80 pct of the input energy to the stamp shoes was wasted as sensible heat in the ore pulp. No other studies of comminution by this method of energy differences came to the author's attention. Reasonable agreement as to the order-of-mag-nitude of comminution efficiencies in tumbling-media mills is lacking in the literature. There is a widespread impression among technical workers that the grinding efficiency of the industrial ball mill may be on the order of 1 pct, or even a fraction

Silicon thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum onto (0001) and (1102) sapphire substrates. Attempts were made to correlate the structural properties of the deposited silicon films with the following: 1) substrate orientation, 2) substrate surface condition, 3) substrate temperature, and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000°C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. The following sapphire surface treatments were investigated: 1) annealing in the ultrahigh vacuum at 1200° C; 2) heating in a hydrogen atmosphere at about 1350°C; and 3) etching with silicon by evaporating silicon onto sapphire substrates heated to 1200° or 1300°C. Twinned silicon films were occasionally formed at substrate temperatures between the 800° and 1000°C on unprocessed mechanically polished substrates; however, the reproducibility and crystallinity of these films were generally poor. Single-crystal and twinned silicon films were formed at substrate temperatures between 700° and 1000°C on substrates which were silicon-etched at 1300°C prior to deposition. Fiber texture films were formed at substrate temperatures between 500° and 700°C. The (111) lattice plane of the silicon single-crystal films was parallel to the (0001) sapphire plane and the (100) silicon plane was parallel to the (1102) sapphire plane. TECHNIQUES are well-established for growing single-crystal silicon thin films on sapphire by chemical methods.'-* Vacuum epitaxial techniques have a number of advantages over chemical epitaxial techniques in the fabrication of thin film microcircuits.5 One of the most significant is that vacuum techniques are compatible with well-established procedures for forming vacuum-deposited thin-film resistors, capacitors, and interconnections. Salatna, Tucker, and young6 recently reported the formation of relatively poor crystalline-quality silicon films on sapphire by electron beam evaporation in a vacuum of about 7 x 10-7 Torr. The purpose of the investigation described here is to determine the relationships between the structural properties of silicon thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by electron beam evaporation in an ultra-high vacuum and the following: 1) substrate orientation; 2) substrate surface condition; 3) substrate temperature; and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000° C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. Two orientations of sapphire were used: (0001) and (1102). The thick-nesses of the films were between 8000 and 16,000A. The morphology and crystallinity of the deposited films and substrate surfaces were investigated by optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A cross section of the ultrahigh-vacuum thin-film evaporator is shown in Fig. 1. The bell jar is stainless steel and copper gaskets are utilized at all seals. High vacuum is attained by a 6001iter per sec ion pump and a titanium sublimation pump. Sorption pumps are used to rough the system to a pressure of about 10 µ prior to starting the ion pump. Vacuums in the 10- 10 Torr range were attained after baking the system at about 250°C for 8 hr. Vacuums in the 10-8 to 10-9 Torr range were maintained during silicon evaporation. The silicon charges, which were cut from p-type single-crystal boules which had resistivities between 2000 and 4500 ohm-cm, were placed in the water-cooled copper crucible of a 180 deg bent-beam 5-kw electron beam evaporator. During evaporation, a molten zone was formed in the top center of the silicon charge, and the portion of the silicon charge in contact with the water-cooled crucible remained solid. RECENT studies by Smith and Olney,1,2 Olney,3 Greifer and Salli,4 Rys etal., and Olney and smith 6 have established that graphite is the first decomposition product to format the surface of hypereutectoid plain-carbon steels when they are austenitized in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and slowly cooled. This graphite evidently forms directly from the austenite and only at the surface of the specimen. The interior of the specimen is found to be free of graphite. The graphite layer can almost completely cover the specimen surface and the rate of its formation is markedly sensitive to the orientation of the austenite. The present work was undertaken to study this phenomenon further, especially with regard to the effect of temperature and austenite orientation. The material studied in this work was a high-purity iron-carbon alloy containing 0.88 pct C, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.016 pct Si, 0.005 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. Specimens were heat-treated in a commercial hot stage modified for rapid quenching.7 This permitted direct observation of the formation of the surface graphite. A vacuum of 10"" to 10-5 mm of Hg prevented oxidation or decarburization of the specimens. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1100°C and quenched to a series of lower temperatures where they were isothermally transformed. Surface graphite was observed to form at 700°, 750°, and 780°C but not at 825°, 900° or 1000°C. ALTHOUGH the occurrence of a readily visible tarnish on the stress-corrosion fracture surfaces of titanium alloys tested in oxygenated nitrogen tetrox-ide solutions has been reported,' the possibility that the formation of this tarnish is a requirement for cracking to proceed does not appear to have been considered. It has been proposed that failure occurs in this system as a result of some electrochemical-mechanical process.2 However, recent studies3-6 of the stress-corrosion cracking of a brass in certain ammoniacal solutions, which also cause visible tarnishing, have led to the view that failure occurs by the repeated formation and fracture of a brittle surface film of cuprous oxide. The purpose of this note is to point out the similarities which exist between the tarnish which forms on a brass and that found on titanium alloys failed in nitrogen tetroxide, and to suggest, by analogy, that a similar tarnish-rupture mechanism may be operative in the latter case. The titanium alloy selected for the present study contained 5.2 pct Al, 2.5 pct Sn, 0.025 pct C, 0.16 pct Fe, 0.014 pct N, 0.012 pct H, 0.07 pct 0, and 0.002 pct Mn by weight. Vacuum-annealed alloy strips measuring 4 by 0.25 by 0.04 in. were used to prepare self-stressed test specimens. Each specimen was made from two strips by bending the end portions and spot welding them together to produce curved sections of uniform bending stress. (The exact details of preparing such specimens have been described by Lisagor el al.7) The curvature in the strips determines the ma-magnitude of the outer fiber stress, which in the present specimens was 100,000 psi (yield stress = 120,000 psi). The specimen surface in the spot-welded end regions was shot-peened to induce compressive stresses and thereby eliminate the possibility of stress-corrosion cracking in these regions. The test environment was nitrogen tetroxide, initially containing 99.5 pct N2O4, 0.1 pct H2O, and 0.08 pct C1, through which oxygen had been bubbled for 30 min. During testing the tetroxide was subject to an oxygen pressure of 250 psi. The duration of the test was 96 hr, and during this time stress-corrosion cracks propagated through some 50 pct of the thickness of the specimens. After testing, the tarnish was liberated from the fracture surface by immersion in a methanol-5 pct bromine solution, and then examined by electron dif- fraction and transmission electron microscopy using a JEM-7 electron microscope. The possibility that the bromine solution had affected the structure of the tarnish was investigated by an "in silu" examination of the stress-corrosion fracture surface using a reflection electron diffraction attachment designed for handling bulk specimens. Typical areas of the tarnish liberated by the me-thanol-bromine solution are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l(a) reveals that the tarnish consists of individual platelets, and from Fig. l(b) it can be seen that the platelets are joined together to form a semicontinuous film, the boundaries of the titanium substrate grains being retained in the tarnish. Electron-diffraction patterns taken from these areas exhibited diffraction spots typical of a monocrystal. The diffraction pattern shown in Fig. 2 was taken from the central area in Fig. l(n). Monocrystal patterns obtained from areas containing numerous individual platelets can only be explained by assuming that their growth is governed by the titanium substrate (i.e., their growth is epitaxial). In other areas, the tarnish had folded over or became mechanically damaged, and these areas gave diffraction patterns consisting of "spotted" rings, enabling interplanar spacings of the tarnish lattice to be determined. Ore was not immediately taken off, as nothing serious was looked for. The iron for the next week graded from No. 4 to white, and in six days the make was 2741/2 tons. At 10 p.m., Friday, the 28th, a slip of -14 feet occurred, and on Saturday, at 5 A.M., another of 3 feet on the south side and 7 feet on the north side took place. At this time it was found that the south side had been hanging for over a week—a fact which had not been reported. Throwing off the wind, to produce slips and reduce pressure, had been tried with no effect. The stock, as seen through the tuyeres, seemed to consist almost entirely of coal, with just enough infusible cinder to cement it into a mass through which the blast could not be forced. At 3.50 A.M., Sunday, the 30th, the first cinder seen in seventeen hours came into tuyeres Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 6. At 9.30 A.M. No. 3 was taken out to see if the stock

LANS are underway for the annual meeting of AIME, to be held in New York, February 17 to 21. The technical program includes meetings of all divisions of all three branches, Mining, Metals, and Petroleum. The bulk of the technical sessions will be held at the Statler Hotel, and the annual banquet will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria, Wednesday evening, February 20. The technical program of the Mining Branch activities is included in this issue. While it is not complete in every detail, it shows general interest groupings as well as subjects to be discussed. The program for each division is shown separately to facilitate following the activities of these special interest groups. Then, after a full scale and possibly somewhat strenuous technical meeting, a post-meeting feature will appeal to many of the members. A restful cruise to Bermuda and Nassau is offered at special rates to AIME members and friends. The schedule is a 3:00 pm departure from New York on the Queen of Bermuda on Saturday, February 23; arrival at Bermuda at 7:00 am Monday, February 25; arrival at Nassau at noon, Wednesday, February 27; and the trip ending again in New York at 9:00 am, Saturday, March 1. The problem of vein formation has been of particular interest to the writer for years. As his work for a long time was confined largely to districts showing large deposits of copper ore, it was natural that the efficiency of replacement, as one if not the chief control of the emplacement of the ore, seemed a particularly attractive hypothesis. Of late years, in almost daily underground work in the Guanajuato district, he has collected evidence which makes it certain that in a number of cases the ore solutions were under sufficient pressure to force the rock walls apart and to hold them apart, thus offering an open space for the deposition of vein and ore-bearing material. This paper will concern itself with conditions frequently met with in hypogene ore deposits of the vein type, and will deal in particular with ore occurrence in precious-metal veins of the type classified by Lindgrenl as epithermal deposits, or metalliferous deposits formed near the surface by ascending thermal waters2 and in genetic connection with igneous rocks. To account for the emplacement of this type of ore deposit various writers have suggested the following agencies: 1. Shattering of the wall rocks. 2. Pressure of growing crystals. 3. Magmation, as treated at length by Spurr3. 4. Replacement. 5. Openings produced by folding. 6. Shearing due to gravity. 7. Shrinkage produced by the passage of pre-ore solutions. 8. Contraction joints produced by lateral secretion. To this list there may be added another agency, a discussion of which forms the basis of this paper: 9. Pressure of the ore-bearing solutions.

WITH imperfect instruments it is impossible to make accurate surveys; the results are inaccurate maps, with their attendant consequences. The design of the writer is to describe an improved form of tripod head, and certain defects in an English transit and a miners' dial, with the method taken to remedy the defects of the transit. When the present transit superseded the surveyor's compass, there was one special objection brought against it, and with some show of reason ; namely, that the tripod of the compass with its ball and socket motion, allowed a quicker levelling-up (and, consequently, more work) than was possible with the transit. To this objection it was replied, that the ball and socket would not allow the instrument to be levelled with the same degree of precision that could be attained with the levelling screws, and that if time was sacrificed greater accuracy was attained. Nevertheless, it is a well-known fact that in this country, and especially in England, the compass or miners' dial holds its ground solely from its rapid adjustment. Ever since the introduction of the transit, efforts have been made to give to this instrument the same facility of levelling possessed by the compass or dial, and the same means have been tried, i. e., a . ball and socket motion, since a modification of this in some form was the only method that would answer. The upper part of a transit is, however, much heavier than the corresponding parts of a compass, and, therefore, requires more binding power, which cannot be ob¬tained with an ordinary ball and socket joint. It has been a study with instrument-makers to combine the facility of these two tripods -the quickness of the ball and socket with the steadiness and accuracy of the screws; but in all attempts in this direction the ball and socket of the compass has been literally followed, the entire stability of the instrument depending upon the friction of the ball in its socket. There is great need for a tripod that can be more easily manipulated than the present form, for it rarely happens that an engineer has a level surface on which to set his instrument, and very often
