Over the past ten years a series of investigations have been conducted to determine some of the physical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges. Detailed discussions of many of these investigations have been published elsewhere.1-6 Laboratory experiments made by other investigators using Hopkinson pressure-bar techniques have shown that solid materials are fractured in tension by the reflection of an incident compressive stress pulse at a free surface.7-12 In these tests a small charge of explosive is placed in contact with one end of a bar. Detonation produces some plastic flow and crushing of the bar near the charge and generates a compressive stress pulse that travels along the length of the bar. At the free end of the bar the compressive stress pulse is reflected back into the bar as a tensile stress pulse. If the tensile strength of the bar is exceeded during this reflection process, a tensile fracture normal to the length of the bar is produced, and the broken end of the bar moves forward with a constant velocity equal to the average particle velocity trapped in the broken fragment. The new surface formed by the fracture becomes the new free end of the bar that reflects the remaining portion of the incident compressive stress pulse. This process is repeated any number of times until all of the incident stress pulse is reflected.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an aban-doned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they pene-trated the capping and encountered iron. ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was dis-covered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint.

THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. ‡ There is, however, a distinct metallographic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others 1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The volumetric flow rate and the initial concentration of the copper sulfate solution influence the rate of reaction and, hence, the precipitation efficiency in a continuous launder cementation system. Using a model of such a system it was found that the precipitation efficiency is related to the two process parameters by the approximate expression [ log [1-n] = -[0.072 co 2.91 e – 0.511c o Q 1.15 ] N Q] where c is the initial concentration, Q, is the volumetric flow rate and N is the number of launders in the system. This expression agrees with an equation developed for the rate of the cementation process if it is assumed that the exponential factor represents the change in the surface area with concentration and the exponents 2.91-and 1.15 relate the hydrodynamic conditions and the surface concentration to co and Q. The experimental results are used to determine the values of a Precipitation Coefficient for any volumentric flow rate and initial concentration of solution. Knowing the Precipitation Coefficient, the total volume of launders that will result in a given precipitation efficiency can be calculated. It is established that maximum precipitation efficiencies are obtained for initial concentrations between 6.0 and 7.0 gpl and volumetric flow rates of approximately 350 m3 /hr Good agreement between calculated and actual launder volumes is obtained for a number of industrial operations for which a comparison is made.

Electrical double-layer properties of the silver sulfide-solution interface in different electrolytes and the influence the properties exert on the adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) were studied using an electrochemical titration technique. The flotation behavior of silver sulfide was observed using DAA as collector and the results were correlated with adsorption measurements. Silver and sulfide ions were identified as the potential determining ions and their adsorption densities were measured as functions of the pAg and of the ionic strength at two different pH values. The point-of-zero-charge (PZC) was observed to be at pAg 10.2, the value being independent of pH and of the nature and concentration of the electrolyte used. The surface charge of silver sulfide in these electrolytes was positive for pAg values less than 10.2 and was negative for pAg values greater than 10.2. The adsorption of amine on silver sulfide surfaces at pH 4.7 was found to be strongly dependent on the pAg. A shift in the PZC towards a lower pAg due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion towards silver sulfide surfaces. At pH 9.2 a strong adsorption of the undissociated amine molecule was indicated. The PZC shift towards a higher pAg and the adsorption of the amine was virtually independent of the interfacial electrical conditions.

Water-propelled banks of carbon dioxide recovered both high- and low-viscosity crude oil substantially in excess of that recovered by water flood in linear flow model experiments. The increase in oil recovery is explained by oil swelling and viscosity reduction. Additional oil was recovered by solution gas drive at the end of the carbon dioxide floods when the model systems were depres-sured. This study was an investigation of the use of a water-driven carbon dioxide bank to recover crude oil. Techniques involving the injection of carbon dioxide have aroused con-siderable interest in recent years among methods considered for increasing oil recoveries. A number of investigators have studied the process in the laboratory1-' and in the field.7,5 Laboratory studies referenced indicate that carbon dioxide in conjunction with water flooding recovers more oil than does water flooding alone. These re- ports diverge widely, however, in stating magnitude of improvement. We believed that a water-driven carbon dioxide bank would increase recovery of crude oils by two mechanisms: viscosity reduction and oil swelling. Due to reduction in the oil viscosity caused by solution of carbon dioxide, displacement efficiency should be improved. In addition, the residual oil should be highly swollen by the carbon dioxide held in solution. Thus, the final residual oil saturation, in terms of stock-tank oil, would be lower than in the absence of carbon dioxide. To test this hypothesis, experi-

The steam-generating plant at the Garfield smelter of The American Smelting and Refining Co. consists of two divisions in which the boilers are classed as direct-fired or waste-heat. The direct-fired boiler plant consists of eight 330-boiler hp. type K-19 and S-I 7 Stirling boilers located in the boiler room adjacent to the power house, and two 330-boiler hp. Stirling type K-19 boilers in the reverberatory building, which formerly were connected to a reverberatory furnace but now are arranged for direct firing. All direct-fired boilers are now fired with natural gas. The waste-heat boiler plant consists of all units connected to reverberatory furnaces, and receiving heat from the exit gases therefrom. In this classification there are two 490-boiler hp. Erie City vertical water-tube boilers, and six 330-boiler hp. type K-19 Stirling water-tube waste-heat boilers. Each furnace has boilers arranged in battery setting. The boilers are directly in front of the furnace and connection is made through a short uptake and flue (Fig. 1). The Stirling boiler settings rest on concrete foundations at ground level, with the furnace uptake and flue at a low elevation. The Erie boilers are carried on steelwork some 15 ft. above ground level, and stand against the face of the uptake with no connecting flue. The constructional requirements of a larger furnace dictated this type of setting.

This paper describes a computerized simulation system developed by KETRON, Inc., in cooperation with the US Bureau of Mines. The system is designed for use by mine managers and engineers rather than computer specialists and allows the novice user to arbitrarily create room-and-pillar mine plans, with the computer illustrating the simulation of face activities on a video screen. Extensive visibility of the simulation is provided by visual display of the machine elements and their movement in the section to accommodate the extraction, roof control, place changing, and haulage operations. Performance statistics are also generated to analyze the operations. Both conventional and continuous mining methods can be simulated. In addition to simulating arbitrary scenarios, the system can also be used to display actual time-studied operations and maintain a file of these activities. Practical applications and case studies are provided in the paper to demonstrate the usefulness of the system. The system is designed to operate on a desk-top mini computer and is currently installed on a Hewlett-Packard 9854B system with 450 K bytes of memory.

INTRODUCTION Most works on flotation of ions and precipitates from solutions have been summarized recently (1-3). Flotation is more desirable than thickening or centrifuging because of higher recovery, productivity, simplicity of apparatus and better economics in general. Electrolytic flotation that utilizes gases is more favorable than other flotation processes because of the following: higher dispersity of gas bubbles, low coalescence of the bubbles, possibility of gradual regulation of the dispersity and other parameters of flotation (4-5). Flotation from solutions is mostly based on the use of alkaline reagents as precipitants (5). Flotation from acid solutions is less common. We used multicomponent solutions with more than 2-3 components, unlike previous research methods. Acidic flotation allows recirculation of solutions to previous operations such as leaching, etc. REAGENTS FOR PRECIPITATION Electroflotation was studied over a wide range of pH with the addition of ferrocyanide, oxyquinoline, hydroxide and carbonate precipitants. In recent works (1,2,6,7) on flotation of Ni, Cu, Zn from alkaline solutions, mostly ferrocyanides were applied. Our choice was oxyquinoline because of the following: 8-oxyquinoline is a nonspecific reagent for many metals, it is readily soluble in acids and alkalis, oxyquinolates of the studied metals are in soluble compounds, the reagent works over a wide range of pH, it is widely available, oxyquinolate precipitates are stable when exposed to air, are readily floatable, and are easily converted to oxides of the metals by sintering.

IN rock- or ore-crushing tests all data, in order to be valuable for study and comparison, should be obtained and tabulated under conditions as uniform as possible. The results of many such tests have no value for comparison, because of incomplete data and the lack of uniform conditions, screens and scale of sizing, etc. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a form of standard specifications which may be developed by the Milling Committee and approved by the A. I. M. E. for rock-crushing tests. It is not intended to discuss any theories of rock crushing. Reports of rock-crushing tests should include the following details: 1. Description of the machine employed (jaw or gyratory crushers, rolls, stamps, tube mills, Chilean mills, etc.). 2. Method and material (timber, concrete, etc.) of foundation. Much power is dissipated in the vibration of poor foundations. 3. Locality from which the rock or ore was obtained, and geological, mineralogical, and physical characters of the material. 4. The power consumption of the machine running with no load and with full load, the unit of power being 1 hp, per 24 hr. 5. The capacity of the machine in tons (of 2000 lb.) per 24 hr. 6. The duty in tons per horsepower-day. 7. The screen analysis of feed and product by the proposed A. I. M. E. standard screen scale. On the foregoing statement, the following remarks are offered.

Conventional analyses of seepage through saturated media do not apply when tailings impoundments are located above a partially saturated zone. Three stages of seepage are identified and methods for estimating the seepage rates and duration of each stage, based upon flow in partially saturated and saturated porous media, are demonstrated. The effectiveness of earthen liners is discussed and procedures for estimating the required properties of the porous media are provided.

The relation between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An interorystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows. Corroded Lead Sheathing In Figs. 1 and 2 are shown two typical specimens of corroded lead sheathing selected from materials submitted to the Bureau of Standards for examination. Fig; 1 shows a section of the sheathing of an aerial cable; Fig. 2, that of the lead covering of a subterranean feeder-line of an electric light system. In this case the deterioration had proceeded to a much great'er extent than in the case shown in Fig. 1 so that certain portions of the metal could easily be crumbled into a coarse gray powder by the fingers. THE places where, yesterday, oil was unknown contain tomorrow's fields. Unquestionably, some states that now yield little or no oil have great potentialities, and developments in these states, although perhaps of less immediate interest than those in regions where great pools now exist, may easily be of greater ultimate importance than the results of exploration closer to known fields. Not long ago, Montana had only a quarter of an oil pool, and that was regarded by many as an accident that had strayed from Wyoming. More recently, the northern line of Louisiana was a dead line that would not be crossed by any Louisiana operator who valued his reputation for sanity. Within the past few months, Colorado has shown that it is far from being a negligible factor in the oil supply of the Rocky Mountain states, and it is now known that western Kansas, long shunned by many reputable geologists and operators, should be reckoned with. There may be a vast difference between what a wildcat well yields and what the well signifies. The fact that no commercial production is encountered may be lamentable and may well be disastrous to an individual or a company, but the same well that spells ruin to one may convey to another the information that will result in opening a new field. In presenting the conclusions, in this paper, the writer recognizes fully the possibility of erroneous deductions, particularly since he has had contact with only a few of the wells that are mentioned. Information comes principally from the scout. maps and files maintained at the Geological Survey by M. E. Latimer and G. K. Drach, without whose cooperation this summary would not be possible, supplemented by some personal contact and second-hand information gained by. conversation and correspondence. However, it is felt that the data contain few errors, and that the conclusions are at least reasonable.

West Texas was the scene of greatly increased oil activity during 1937, producing 75,743,000 bb1.l in that year as compared with 61,901,-000 bb1.2 in 1936, an increase of 22.36 per cent. The annual total of wells completed increased from 15863 in 1936 to 28062 in 1937, an increase of 76.92 per cent. Of the total completions in 1937, 2464 were oil wells,2 11 gas wells2 and 331 dry holes.2 The marked increase in the number of oil wells completed in West Texas during 1937 had a substantial effect upon the daily average production per well, which decreased 20.84 per cent from December 1936, when a total of 5310 wells3 produced 5,236,467 bbl.3 for an average of 31.81 bbl. per well per day to December 1937, when 7571 wells2 with a total production of 5,910,257 bb1.2 averaged 25.18 bbl. per well per day. Drilling blocks and checkerboard acreage were being acquired following geophysical work in the northern end of the Permian Basin area, composed of Bailey, Cochran, Hockley, Yoakum and Terry Counties, presaging extension of active development northward. During 1937, at one time 30 geophysical crews were working in West Texas, and an average of 15 to 20 crews was active in this area throughout the year. Discoveries Wasson-Denver Field.—Wasson-Denver field in Gaines and Yoakum Counties was the outstanding field discovery of the year. Production is from porous limestone found at about 5000 ft., and an average well is good for from 300 to 500 bbl. of crude oil per day through 3/4-in. choke. The discovery well was drilled by A. G. Carter and others on the Wasson Ranch, Gaines County, and the field has since been extended into Yoakum County. At the year's end 21 wells had been completed, producing

I would like to make the following points in connection with the studies of the deformation of NiAl reported in the recent paper by Wasilewski, Butler, and Hanlon. 1) Much of their paper is concerned with demonstrating that slip occurs on either {110)(001) or {100)(001) systems. In their discussion they state "the existence of (001) as the basic slip direction can thus be considered established." This fact was established by the earlier studies of Ball and Smallman.32 Ball and Smallman also concluded that the slip plane was of the type (110) and they showed that cross slip or pencil glide on orthogonal (110) planes could produce macroscopic slip on planes of the (001) zones, e.g., (100). Wasilewski et al. refer to this paper by Ball and Smallman but not in connection with the slip system determinations. 2) Wasilewski et a!. eliminate the possibility of (111) slip in NiAl on dubious grounds. Their statement that ('the very high yield strengths of the (100) oriented crystals", in which (001) slip is constrained, "immediately ruled out the possibility of {110)(111) slip" cannot be accepted unequivocably; it would be reasonable if the crystals were completely brittle but they are not, as Wasilewski et al. and others33734 have shown. Their elimination of the possibility of (111) slip in a crystal compressed along [227] is misleading since there is no obvious reason why (111) slip should occur in a crystal of this orientation. In fact, from an analysis of the macroscopic surface markings on deformed (100) stoichiometric crystals, Pascoe and Newey34 have deduced that slip occurs on systems of the type {211)(111) and {321)(111). 3) Polycrystalline NiAl is known to undergo general deformati~n.Having emphasized that general deformation is impossible if only (100) slip occurs, it is a pity that Wasilewski et al. do not attempt to account for the disagreement between theory and their experimental results. Of course, (111) slip can provide the additional independent systems required for general deformation.

The following example of the practical application of engineering geology is of interest in that it demonstrates the advantage of keeping accurate records of all wells, whether drilled by onn's self or by others, together with the advantage gained by gathering such data during the process of development. The fault described was found in the autumn of 1915, during the hurried development caused by the discovery of the famous Gusher Bend pool in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The writer was at the time employed by one of the operating companies as geologist, and the example is a portion of the routine work. Location The oil fields of northern Louisiana and east Texas are located in Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River Parishes, Louisiana, and Marion County, Texas. A very narrow strip of the eastern portion of the latter is productive. The producing oil pools are known as the Caddo Field, in the northern part, and the De Soto-Red River Field, in the southern. The two fields are 60 miles apart. There are several gas fields between them, but no important supply of oil has been found, though there are several producing wells in the Anona chalk, locally called the Chalk Rock, in the Elm Grove gas field in Township 16 North, Range 11 West (see Plate 1). The submission of carefully prepared estimates of the oil reserves of the United States calls for no apology or explanation. In this country, petroleum is a rapidly wasting asset and an occasional appraisal of the amount remaining in the ground is a simple business procedure to safeguard the general welfare and the prosperity of the republic. The rumored danger of failure, in the near future, of the foreign supply on which we depend in constantly increasing amounts makes the immcdiatc review of our available reserves the more imperative. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey, in March, 1921, requested the American Association of Petroleum Geologists to cooperate in the preparation of new estimates of the oil remaining in the graund. With the members of this cooperative committee, state geologists, regional geologists, oonsulting specialists, and geologists and engineers attached to many companies worked both independently and through subcommittees. The reports for districts, counties, fields, etc., after review by local or state committees, were discussed by the joint cooperative committee in conferences that, in some instances, were attended by the original compilers of estimates for the states or smaller areas. Finally the data were reviewed and the figures revised by the joint cooperative committee, so that the totals given in Table 1 represent the opinion of the committee, which was composed of F. W. DeWolf, W. E. Wrather, Roswell H. Johnsont Wallace A. Pratt, Alexander W. McCoy, Carl H. Beal, C. T. Lupton, G. C. Matson, K. C. Heald, W. T. Thom, Jr., A. E. Fath, Kirtley F. Mather, R. C. Moore, and David White, chairman. Oil geologists and engineers understand well the speculative nature and the chances of error that must attend estimates of the petroleum in the ground when they cover not merely prospective territory, but possible territory.
