The following changes of address of members have been received at the Secretary's office during the period of Jan. 1 to Mar. 15, 1907. This list therefore supplements the annual list of members corrected to Jan. 1, 1907, and brings it up to the date of Mar. 15, 1907. The names of members who have accepted election during January and February, 1907 (new members), are printed in italics. The large number of changes of address since Jan. 1, 1907, shows the importance of publishing these changes as frequently as possible, and the Bi-Monthly Bulletin has been selected as the means to present this information to the members of the Institute. By a simple method of cutting out these names and addresses and pasting them directly over the corresponding names in the annual list of members, the record can be kept practically up to date, and the value of the list correspondingly increased. For this purpose the changes of address have been printed only on one side of the page. The names of new members, being in italics, are readily distinguished from the others, and can be pasted in approximate alphabetical order on the margins of the pages.

Oil production in north Louisiana in 1938 was 28,442,910 bbl., a decrease of 225,160 bbl., or less than 1 per cent, from 1937. The principal increases were at Cotton Valley, Lisbon and Zwolle. The greatest decrease was at Rodessa, with small normal declines in production of the old settled fields. Natural gas production from gas wells declined 15.9 per cent from 1937, but casinghead gas increased, so the decline in total production was only 6.9 per cent. Decline in completions was due to lack of proven areas for drilling, as well as price and marketing difficulties; and wildcat activity mas also less than in 1937. The increase in number of dry holes was due chiefly to shallow drilling in the old Caddo and Zwolle fields. Most important events in 1938 were the discovery of the Shreveport deep oil and gas field, extension of the Logansport gas-distillate field into Louisiana, development of oil production in the Bodeaw zone on the flanks of Cotton Valley, opening of deep gas-distillate production at Shongaloo, and completion of one well in a deeper horizon at Bluc Lake (Zwolle field). Geological Notes The deep drilling done in 1938 did not cause any important changes in geological correlation and nomenclature of the formations below the Upper or Gulf Cretaceous. The stratigraphic section of the Lower Cretaceous and deeper beds, with names used in the accompanying tables, as approved a year ago by the Shreveport Geological Society, is as follows:

The controlled amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur or selenium found in commercial coppers perform a variety of highly useful functions. Indeed, a large segment of modern copper technology is essentially dependent upon the presence of one or more of these elements. Consequently, the literature contains many references to their effects but the scope is broad and has been only partly covered. New data are presented herewith directed toward a better understanding of the basic behavior of these elements in copper, with particular emphasis on the composition range o to 0.05 per cent. These data are a part of a general program of research on the effects of impurities on the properties of oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper, other portions of which have been reported previously. Schematically, the behavior of individual elements is determined from measurements of conductivity and softening temperature,'v2 and the binary alloys employed are synthesized from high-purity copper in order to eliminate interference from the effects of extraneous impurities. Alloys of selected composition were first prepared in the oxygen-free form by continuously casting the melts in the form of %-in. diameter rod. Oxygen was added subsequently to portions of the alloys, either by remelting or by diffusion at 8jo°C. from a surface scale. Test wires wcre drawn one B. and S. number per pass, using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in., and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Oxygen-bearing slugs made by remelting nere hot-rolled to 4ia in.. drawn to 0.162 in., annealed for 30 min. at 6o0°C. and cold-drawn 75 per cent to 0.081 inch. The alloys containing phosphorus, having been compounded very early in the program, were prepared in the form of 3i6-in. rod, and processed to wire with only the last three intermediate anneals listed above, all of these having been conducted in commercial nitrogen. In addition, the conductivity anneals on these alloys were also performed in the same atmosphere, and the small amount of oxygen present as an impurity in the gas resulted in some loss of accuracy at temperatures of 700' to 8o0°C., as will be shown later. Subsequently, the anneals for all oxygen-free alloys were conducted in hydrogen to prevent oxidation, and purified nitrogen was employed only for oxygen-bearing samples. All conductivity anneals wcre of one hour duration followed by a rapid quench in 10 per cent HZSO*. THE Federation of Engineering Societies has been created for the sole purpose of public service. This initial meeting surely warrants some discussion of a few of the problems to which this organization, for expression of the --. engineering mind, can quite well give consideration. Some of the greatest of the problems before the country and, in fact, before the world, are those growing out of our industrial development. The enormous industrial expansion of the last fifty' years has lifted the standard of living and comfort beyond any dream of our forefathers. Our economic system under which it has been accomplished has given stimulation to invention, to enterprise, to individual improvement of the highest order, yet it presents a series of human and social difficulties for the solution of which we are groping. The congestion of population is producing subnormal conditions of life. The vast repetitive operations are dulling the human mind. The intermittency bf employment due to the bad coordination of industry, the great waves of unemployment in the ebb and flow of economic tides, produce infinite wastes and great suffering. Our business enterprises have become so large and complex that the old personal relationship between employer and worker has to a great extent disappeared. The aggregation of great wealth, with its power of economic domination, presents social, economic ills which we are constantly struggling to remedy.

Since 1947 Preussag AG Metal1 has used a process for fuming zinc- and lead-containing dump slags and residues from vertical retorts in a half-shaft furnace at their Hüttenwerk Harz at Oker. Contrary to the classic shaft furnace, only one side of the half-shaft furnace is fitted with tuyeres. The opposite side is a bricked slope. The upper shaft section is piped. There zinc vapor and combustion gases are burned by sucked-in air. Gases and fume enter a boiler located on the rear length of the furnace via a piped fire bridge. The gases are then cooled in an air preheater prior to dedusting in a bag filter. The furnace is charged with briquettes of metal-bearing materials, coal and pitch. The leaded zinc oxide fume is comparatively rich in both lead and zinc. The copper in the feed is recovered in low-copper matte. The slag can be discarded. The Oker plant comprises 13 furnaces of 2.9 to 4.9 m length in the tuyere area. Two other plants in Italy and Spain are processing zinc leach residues by this technique. Fuming of zinc-lead-oxide ores as well as partially roasted sulfide- zinc-lead-copper bulk concentrates will be possible.

NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one's capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen's compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen's compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

The two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of a solid are its intrinsic properties, e.g.,grain size, and the operative stress system. The latter may be modified in laminates by the presence of weak interfaces. This is studied in notch-impact tests on a mode1 system of mild steel laminates containing a variety of interfaces. The effect of these is evaluated in terms of the ductile/cleavage transition. Two laminate geometries are distinguished, here called "crack-arrester " and "crack-divider". In both, cleavage is inhibited. This arises because of relaxation of a state of triaxial tension. In the crack-avrester laminates, cleavage initiated at a notch is confined to the layer containing the notch. In crack-cliuider laminates, a thick specimen behaves as the Sum of a number of thinner ones. Additional benefit may derive from improved intritnsic propevties of- the lanlinate layers arising from greater deformation in their manufacture. It has long been recognized that the two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of solids are their intrinsic properties (e.g., grain size friction stress,3 distribution of second phase particles4) and the operative stress system under which fracture occurs. In solids that show a ductile/cleavage transition, cleavage is favored by the presence of a notch. This is because triaxial tensions, generated by the localized plastic constraint at the notch, are operative when fracture occurs.= Anything that suppresses these triaxial tensions will be unfavorable to cleavage. Such suppression may possibly occur in laminates containing weak interfaces and the purpose of the present paper is to explore this possibility. Two basic laminate geometries, here termed "crack-avrester" and "cvack-divider", are examined. They are illustrated in Fig. 1. With the crack-arrester laminates, there is the possibility that, when the fracture crack approaches the interface, this, if weak, may delaminate due to the tensile stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack.= If this happens, energy will be used in delamination, the crack will be completely blunted, and the triaxial tension associated with the crack will be relaxed. To fracture the second portion of the laminate, crack reinitiation will be necessary and, because of the relaxation of the triaxial tension, this reinitiation will occur under conditions of nearly uniaxial tension, which are unfavorable to cleavage. Thus there is the possibility of cleavage suppression in the second and subsequent subunits of a crack-arrester laminate. With the crack-divider geometry, there is again the possibility of delamination at the interfaces. This will divide the crack into a series of cracks propagating through the individual laminate subunits. If these are sufficiently thin, the triaxial tension will be relaxed towards a state of biaxial tension in each of them. Thus, with the crack-divider laminates, there is again the possibility of cleavage inhibition. In the present work, these possibilities are explored using a notched impact test on mild steel laminates bonded with soft solder, silver solder or copper. Even if delamination does not occur, it is still possible that cleavage may be inhibited in laminates. With the crack-arrester geometry, the cleavage crack in the first layer may be blunted and arrested by plastic deformation in the laminate bond, if this is ductile. Partial relaxation of the stress transmitted ahead of the crack into the second layer will then result and this will reduce the significance of this stress in the fracture of the second layer. With the crack-divider geometry, there cannot be much effect in the absence of delamination unless a large amount of energy is absorbed in rupturing the ductile material. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The composition of the mild steel (wt pet) was: 0.04 C, 0.29 Mn, 0.01 Si, 0.006 P, 0.008 S. "As-received" plate was annealed for 2 hr at 900°C and slowly cooled to give a grain size of 0.04 mm. The laminates were made by brazing or soldering together mild steel plates 8 by 3 in. by various thicknesses. These were obtained from the annealed plate by machining, so that the intrinsic material properties were .kept constant. Laminates containing two to six steel layers were studied using standard Charpy V-notch specimens cut from the bonded plates. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other principal calcium sulfate mineral has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO,) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CAS0;2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. However, of most importance is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaS0;Vi H,O) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advantage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which when mixed with water would form a putty that could be "plastered" on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of its quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term "land plaster" for ground gypsum has remained in use. Another cementituous material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered and it has today almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $500 million per year as illustrated in [Table 1].

ACCEPTED current practice for A the valuation of mineral property is based upon Hoskold's theory and valuation tables first published in 1877, and popularized by Herbert Hoover's "Principles of Mining" issued in 1909. In more recent years the procedure has been developed further in the course of the extensive valuation work required for Federal taxation purposes. The 1-aluation of oil and gas properties and of mines is based upon the same principle-the estimation of the present worth of future net revenues. However, in valuing oil and gas properties the method used for discounting future revenues differs somewhat from that adopted for mines, owing principally to the nature of the re- source. production from oil and gas properties usually declines from year to year, whereas coal and ore de- posits are adapted to a more uniform rate of output.
