PHASE relations in three isothermal sections (l000°, 1100°, 1200°C) of the system Ag-Fe-Pd have been determined as part of a program to develop improved crucible materials for containing low-melting iron silicates at low oxygen potentials. The following experimental method was used: Two- to 3- g samples of each of forty different alloys within the system Ag-Fe-Pd were made up from metals of 99.9 pct purity. The mixed metal powders were contained in a 1-cc crucible of dense recrystal-lized alumina and heated in a protective atmosphere (90 vol pct A, 10 vol pct H2), first to complete melting for approximately 30 min and subsequently at the desired equilibration temperature (1000°, 1100°, or 1200°C) for approximately 24 hr. The samples were then quenched rapidly to room temperature and examined metallographically as well as by X-ray techniques. Unit cell dimensions were compared with standards obtained by study of one-phase alloys of known compositions. The results are summarized in diagrams (a), (b), and (c) shown in Fig. 1. Heavy solid curves outline areas comprising compositions of mixtures consisting of the phases labeled for each area. Mixtures in which liquid is the only condensed phase present are confined to very narrow areas adjacent to the Ag-Pd join at high silver contents. OKLAHOMA, in 1924, recorded the largest single increase of any state; the total oil production for the year being 176,206,397 bbl. (Oil & Gas Jnl.), which gives an increase over 1923 of about 9 per cent. Oklahoma ranked second in total amount, California being first, and produced almost 25 per cent. of the total production of the United States. This gain in production is accounted for entirely by the rapid development, deeper drilling, and efficient management of productive areas known at the beginning of the year, for, due to the small number of wells drilled, few new pools were discovered and developed up to any important stage during the year. Three major pools, Burbank, Tonkawa and Cromwell, furnished 37 per cent. of the total production. Burbank led by a wide margin, having the largest production of any single pool; there was a steady increase in production until September. The close. development of the pools in Okfuskee, Seminole, and Hughes Counties, together with the new deep-sand production at Tonkawa and increased drilling operations in Osage County, accounted for the big increase shown during the year. In January, 1924, the shutdown movement and curtailment of production in Hewitt and Tonkawa, which had been effective during the year of 1923, were stopped. The shutdown movement and curtailment of operations in 1923 does not give a fair comparison with 1924, as undoubtedly a great deal more oil would have been produced in 1923 had it not been for these measures. The sensational developments during the year, which were certainly beyond the prediction of the oil industry, were the Cromwell field, which started the year with 10,478 bbl. for January and increased rapidly to 1,267,032 bbl. for. December, and the discovery of the Wilcox productions below 4000 ft. in the Tonkawa field in May, which by the end of the year had produced 11,650,000 bbl. In this connection, it can be safely said that 1924 was a banner year for the Wilcox sand series; it has been estimated that between 40,000,000 and 50,000,000 bbl. of the production for the year came from this sand. Although numerous Wilcox pools were opened throughout the state, the big Wilcox production came from. the Tonkawa and Stroud pools. Oklahoma's deepest well, the Kingwood Oil Co. No. 1 Barnett in the northwest corner of the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Sec. 7 T. 7 N. R. 10 E., Hughes County, was abandoned in January, at 5281 ft. with numerous good shows recorded, which have stimulated-further drilling in the locality.

IT is found when floating oxidized lead ores by sulphidization, that the presence of calcium salts in the water is usually detrimental and lowers the recovery. This effect is particularly marked in dry countries such as North Africa, where the waters often carry large amounts of calcium sulphate and where the ore may even contain gypsum. The effect of calcium salts is readily visible. Whereas in their absence cerussite is quickly stained brown and then .black by sodium sulphide, in their presence the mineral remains very light in color. A similar- effect is produced when barium sulphide is used as a sulphidizing agent instead of sodium- sulphide. Magnesium salts have little or no effect and even tend to reduce the detrimental effect of calcium salts. A study of this phenomenon indicates that it is due to the precipitation of calcium or barium carbonate in contact ,with the mineral simultaneously with the formation of lead sulphide.

In 1942, Illinois produced 106,590,000 bbl. of crude oil, or 7.6 per cent of the entire amount produced in the United States. It ranked fifth among the oil- producing states. The production for 1942 declined 20.5 per cent from the previous year's total of 134,139,000 bbl. Tie daily average production for 1942 was approximately 292,000 bbl., or 74,000 bbl; less than the 366,000 daily average for 1941. At the beginning of 1942 the daily production was 367,000 bbl. This production declined steadily to 282,000 for June and to 246,000 for December. This steady decline was caused partly by the reduction in drilling resulting from Federal Conservation Order M-68 and partly by the fact that no major pool was found during the year. Discoveries Forty new fields (Fig. 2, Table 2), 48 extensions (Table 3), and 45 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 4) Were discovered in 23 counties in Illinois during 1942. AMONG the features that make Inspiration of outstanding A interest, particularly to the engineer, is the fact that at various times it has used, as a major method of production, three more or less distinct methods of mining and three distinct methods of treating its ores. Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrision rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in many mills probably represents less than 10% of the total loss, judging from AMAX experience and recent US Bureau of Mines (USBM) tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills. These indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and, for cast irons M7C3 carbides, produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

THE stored energy and microhardness of a Au-Ag alloy deformed by explosive loading were measured previously as functions of shock pressure' and compared with corresponding data for drawn wires.' The difference of the two processes has been explored further by investigating the annealing behavior of explosively loaded specimens and drawn wires. Sheet specimens, 0.042 in. thick, of a Au-Ag alloy containing 82.6 wt pct Au were explosively loaded in stacks of four.3 Wires prepared from the same melt of alloy were drawn through dies.' The annealing kinetics were determined by microhardness measurements on separate specimens for each annealing temperature and time. Several values of the stored energy were measured by tin-solution calorimetry Experimental details are given elsewhere. Wires were drawn until the microhardness or stored energy equalled the corresponding values of the explosively loaded specimens as nearly as possible. A Vice-President continuously) for the last eleven years, apparently neither his picture nor a biographical sketch ever have adorned these pages and were he forewarned in the present instance he would order us to "forget it." He is a Columbia School of Mines man, Class of '98. He worked underground at Rossland, B. C. for a time, then for a year and a half a. chief engineer of the famous Camp Bird at Ouray, Colo. For three wars he was examining engineer for the Guggenheims and since 1901 has been an independent consulting engineer with experience throughout the Americas.

YELLOWKNIFE, the most northerly Canadian gold mining district, is once more in the throes of a boom. Touched off by spectacular and well-publicized diamond-drilling results on the property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd., mining companies and the general public are competing for mining claims and for the shares of companies owning mining claims in the area, with little regard for values. Such a stock-market boom has various unfortunate consequences but undoubtedly one beneficial result is that considerable amounts of money are made available for serious development. The Yellowknife mining area lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, in the Northwest Territories, at a latitude of approximately 62°30' north. In order properly to evaluate the data related to geomagnetic surveys, it is highly desirable to have all the available information concerning the magnetic properties of the involved media. This is true of surface as well as subsurface formations and becomes of increasing importance as advancement in instrumental and interpretative technique permits the analysis of relatively slight magnetic reflections of buried masses. Since the magnitude and areal distribution of the usually complex resultant magnetic field at the surface of the earth is a function of the susceptibility1 of the involved matter, it necessarily follows that susceptibility determinations will afford valuable data for geophysical correlation. The present method was developed to meet the need for routine analysis of specimens in the geomagnetic laboratory where it was felt that general utility, ruggedness, ease of manipulation and reproducibility of results were of greater importance than extreme sensitivity. Electric Circuits The electric circuits are illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 1. INTRODUCTION Methods of linking boundary integral (BI) solutions with finite element (FE) solutions have been well described theoretically in other publications (e.g., Zienkiewicz, et al., 1977). The purpose of this paper is to point out some practical aspects of implementing these linkage algorithms for rock mechanics applications and to describe an alternative linkage algorithm. A not so obvious motivation for using FE-BI linkages is illustrated in Figure 1. The cost of modeling the excavation of the crusher station by the BI method can equal or exceed the cost of an equivalent FE model. This is due to the large surface area which must be modeled by the BI method. In such cases, a more economical approach might be to model the region immediately adjacent to the crusher station by finite elements and link the solution at the periphery of the FE model with a solution for the exterior region. Further economies can be realized if some flexibility in the type of exterior solution is possible. For example, it would be desirable to use a coarse discretization of the FE-BI interface for a BI solution, which would be less demanding of computer storage and time, or to use an analytical solution for the exterior region. The alternative linkage algorithm to be discussed allows such flexibility. BOUNDARY INTEGRAL METHODS There are basically two formulations of BI methods: the direct and the indirect. FE-BI linkage algorithms depend on which formulation is used. The purpose of this section is to briefly describe each method.

The question, Who won the war?, has been the text for innumerable newspaper, and magazine articles, the answers running from "bread and butter" to "poison gas," in a material sense, and from the "Y. M. C. A." to the "boys in the front lines," humanly speaking. Personally, I think the margin by which success was secured was so narrow that none of the complex, interdependent factors could have been .spared, and that, as Admiral Sampson said after the battle of Santiago: "There is glory, enough for all." But if any one human factor can be said to have been absolutely indispensable, I think all will agree that it was the engineer. The engineer, as a rule, is a modest fellow, so modest in fact and so averse to publicity of any kind that, referring to him as a class, he was hardly occupying the place he should in public estimation before the war. By way of illustration, in the early history of a mine in Bisbee, the chief owner was also the proprietor of a saloon and spent most of his time there. When asked why he did not pay more attention to the mine, lie replied: "Oh! I can hire a boy to look after that; it takes a man to run this bar." Comparisons of the position and pay of engineers with other occupations are sometimes made to show that the engineer is not getting all that he should, considering the time of preparation and the qualifications required. Perhaps at least a part of the cause may be his aloofness from many of the practical affairs of everyday life. Whether he won the war or not, the part played by the engineer has certainly placed him on a sort of pedestal in the public estimation at present and it is very desirable to keep him there and maintain the position he has made for himself.

The fabrication characteristics and properties of phosphorized arsenical Lake copper have been compared with phosphorized prime Lake and phosphorized electrolytic seamless copper tubing, in a series of mill-scale tests employing commercial drawing schedules. Phosphorized arsenical coppers containing as much as 0.20 per cent arsenic were drawn with various reductions into 7/8and 3/8in. seamless tubing along with billets of the two types of arsenic-free copper. The effect of arsenic was determined by the average power required to draw given compositions and by the final properties of the respective materials in the annealed condition and after various degrees of cold reduction. Power consumption data show that no more power is required to draw arsenical coppers of this type than the arsenic-free copper. The result? of tensile tests indicate that arsenic increases the strength of cold-drawn tubing somewhat, but has no measurable effect on the properties of annealed tubing; the ductility of the tubing as evidenced by the elongation and other prescribed tests is unaffectetl by 0.20 per cent arsenic.

THERE are 19 pct fewer undergraduate and graduate mineral engineering students enrolled in the ECPD accredited schools of the United States this year than there were a year ago. The figures are: 8727 this year and 10,674 last year. The entire engineering group in both countries numbers 171,070, as compared with 184,547 last year and 252,250 in 1947-48, the peak year. This is a decrease of 7.3 pct since last year, less than half as much as the decrease in the mineral engineering group. These figures on engineering enrollment for the current year, 195.1-52, in colleges of the United States and Canada were prepared jointly by the U. S. Office of Education and the American Society for Engineering Education. The seriousness of the situation is shown. by the reported demand for 60,000 to 90,000 engineers this year for civilian and defense industries and only 35,800 will graduate next June. THIS paper gives observations on ground movement and subsidence resulting from pillar drawing in the Lick Run section of Montour No. 10 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. adjacent to solid coal owned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Experimental mine in Snowden Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The investigation was planned by George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau, who arranged the necessary cooperation with Dr. L. E. Young, vice president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Engineers of that company placed permanent monuments on the surface to establish the boundaries of the coal owned by the Bureau and to furnish fixed points to which all levels were referred. Engineers of the Experimental mine staff then covered the ground under observation with a checkerwork of monuments made of oak pegs set into the ground at 50-ft. intervals in two directions at right angles to each other. The level of these pegs was determined first from Dec. 16 to 30, 1929; again from May 25 to June 5, 1930, and finally from July 7 to 15, 1931. Observations were then discontinued because work had been stopped temporarily in this part on Montour 10 mine.

(communication to the Secretary*): I am greatly pleased that some one has at last reached what I have long regarded as the only rational explanation yet given of the reasons why steel hardens. Mr. Field claims originality; and doubtless he is entitled to it, but not to priority, mhich must be granted to Prof. John W. Langley.' The difference between them is that Langley says " Tension, probably molecular," and Field says " Tension, probably atomic "; in either case the vital thing after solution is tension. Mr. Field's argument carries with it the idea of increase of density with hardness; if he mill study the facts farther he will observe that the case is just the reverse; that is, the greater the hardness the less the specific gravity; it was just this fact that led Langley to his conclusion, in mhich I have always concurred. Field agrees with Langley that the first requisite for perfect hardening is complete solution of the carbon, not combination; and all of the facts agree with this conclusion. The fact that increase of hardness causes reduction of density was first brought to my notice some 40 years ago, when Major William Wade was testing Jones & Laughlin's cold-rolled iron, and I mas his assistant. We found the well-known increase of tenacity, compressive strength, torsional resistance, and hardness. Specific-gravity tests showed that the cold-rolled iron was less dense than the hot-rolled bars. Major Wade was so surprised at this result that he gave me a lot of samples to weigh, saying that he was not satisfied with
