The Howe Coal Co. is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne bed which ranges in seam thickness from 38 to 42 in. and pitches approximately 7° to the northeast. The raw feed to the cleaning plant averages about 20% ash and 1.10% sulfur, being reduced in the cleaning process to 4.8% ash and 0.9% sulfur with a free swelling index of 8 or 8%. This coal rivals the Pocohantas seam in chemistry and coking characteristics but has better fluidity than the Pocohantas seam coal. The coal is presently being prepared for the Japanese steel market in an 85-tph pilot plant designed and constructed by Roberts & Schaefer. The cleaning-plant flowsheet is discussed in detail.

IN these days of intense competition for the domestic fuel market much is heard of the low efficiencies with which solid fuels, and most particularly bituminous coal, are burned in domestic heating equipment. In contrast to the every-day operating efficiencies of 85 and 90 per cent in large, central, electric-generating stations, efficiencies of 50 per cent and lower are cited for the hand-fired home furnace. Just as the miles per gallon of gasoline is only one of the factors that determine the cost of operation of an automobile, so the thermal efficiency is only one factor in the cost of domestic or other heating. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the total costs of domestic heating by various fuels and types of equipment, to determine the relative importance of efficiency and other factors, and to discuss what this signifies relative to the future of the use of fuels in the home.

Fresh waters and the presence of clay in many Rocky Mountain and West Coast sands require special methods of log analysis. Archie's saturation equation requires addition of a shale correction term, and the SP equation must also be modified to account for clays. Suitable equations were developed several years ago, but have not been widely used due to the algebraic complexity. A computer-oriented method has now been developed to overcome this problem. The basic shaly sand equations are rearranged in four different ways to permit solution for various sets of available input data. Essential to application of the method is the correction of observed SP values to those that would be observed if the resistivity of the formation waters were exactly interchangeable with the activity. A graphic method for doing this is given. Where conditions require consideration of the effect of clay in the sands, the method presented has been found to improve the accuracy of water-saturation determinations. INTRODUCTION Log interpretation in many Rocky Mountain and West Coast basins is complicated by rapid vertical and lateral changes in water resistivity. Calculation of formation water resistivity from the SP curve becomes difficult in zones that contain clay, since changes in SP deflection may be due to changes in either clay content or water salinity. In hydrocarbon-producing reservoirs, the problem is further complicated because hydrocarbon saturation also reduces the SP.1 A log interpretation system using computers has been developed to provide a solution to this problem, based on equations proposed by de Witte.2 Four different simultaneous solutions of de Witte's equations have been made. Each solution method uses a different set of input data as independent variables. Thus, a choice of solution method is possible, depending upon the logs run and the availability of other data. Two of the solutions do not require a knowledge of water resistivity. This system is intended to be used primarily in multiple sandstone-shale sequences of low and moderate resistivities where the principal contaminant in the sandstones is clay. However, where sufficient regional data are available, interpretation in single-zone sandstone reservoirs can also be improved by using the method. THEORY AND HISTORY OF SHALY SAND ANALYSIS The log interpretation formula originally proposed by Archie3 in 1941 is applicable only to rock-fluid systems wherein the rock has negligible electrical conductivity. In 1949, Patnode and Wyllie4 showed that if the rock itself can be considered conductive due to the presence of clay, a different calculation approach is necessary. During the following years, this problem was investigated at great length, as was the related problem of the effect of rock conductivity on the SP.5-11 These investigations established functional relationships between SP, resistivity, water saturation and water resistivity for such a formation. Refs. 2 and 12 provide summaries of these studies. Unfortunately, practical use of these relationships required that water resistivity be known independently from the SP. Although log interpretation methods for rock systems containing clay were proposed at that time,' they were not generally accepted for routine use. There are three principal reasons for this. First, in many field situations involving high-salinity water, rock conductivity may be neglected (even if present) without introducing appreciable error. This may be seen by considering the following expression for waier-saturated rock.' 1/R2=1/R1+1/FRn....(1) where 1/R, is conductivity due to clay. As Rw becomes small, I/FRw becomes much greater than 1/R, which may be neglected. Where 1/R, may be neglected, the sandstone is called clean. If the term may not be neglected, the sandstone is termed dirty or shaly. For resistivity purposes, the classification between clean and shaly sands then depends not only upon the conductivity due to shale in the sand, but also upon the resistivity of the associated water (shale is used here to mean surface condition due to disseminated clay). A sand of given conductivity might safely be treated as clean in association with high-salinity water, but would require shaly sand methods if associated with fresher waters. Shaly sand methods are not required in many areas having saline waters; but in Rocky Mountain and West Coast sands having relatively fresh waters (often more than 0.3 ohm-m resistivity at formation conditions), the shaly sand methods are needed. Errors Rw calculations from the SP due to the presence of shale are likewise related to water salinity. In saline water formations drilled with fresh mud, the ratio of mud filtrate resistivity to water resistivity is high, the SP is large and the presence of shale can introduce large errors in water resistivity calculated by the conventional method. When the resistivity ratio is low, the errors are smaller. At zero SP, no error would result from shale. Thus, from the SP viewpoint, a given rock could be shaly if associated with a saline water, and clean in association with a fresh water, which is the opposite of the resistivity-oriented definition above.

During the past few years the writer has been impressed by the close relation of many epigenetic orebodies with anticlinal structures. In the literature on ore deposits there is occasional mention that an oreshoot or district is on an anticline, but in most of the descriptions no weight or significance is attached to the relation, and usually the fact is concealed in a mass of structural detail. A few writers have stressed the relationship in a few districts or on a certain type of deposit. Church, Spurr, Butler, Stahl and Schuette have called attention to certain features, but the general extent of such a correlation has not been made known in any publication that the author has seen. A recent article1 on the localization of ore deposits, by well-known geologists, does not consider this common association. The author has seen in the field a number of the structural features described, and in addition has made a fairly complete review of the literature. This paper presents enough of the examples found to show the frequency of the relation to anticlines, and since only a few deposits on synclines are known, all of these of any importance of which the writer knows are mentioned. With certain qualifications which are discussed later, epigenetic ore deposits of replacement or vein type are mostly found where local upwarps of the earth's crust have taken place. Where formations antedating the ore deposits are present in the proper attitude to demonstrate vertical warping (i. e., more or less horizontal beds) the structural feature on which a mineral district, or mineralized area is located is almost always anticlinal, or domelike in nature. Some or even most of the ore deposits in a given district may be on the flanks of the upwarp, but few major districts are located definitely on downwarped areas. Synclinal basins within certain limits of size appear to be unfavorable to the type of fracturing that admits ore-bearing solutions. Replacement orebodies frequently are localized in small anticlines or domes, the size of the anticline or roll often being more or less commensurate with that of the enclosed oreshoot. The production of sand in an oil well increases operating costs because of abnormal wear in subsurface equipment, the necessity for frequent cleanouts, and the need for a means of disposing of the sand. Moreover, removal of sand from the zone can bring about the creation of cavities from which bodies of formation, sand or shale, may slough into the hole, endangering the shutoff, impeding production or collapsing the liner. The procedure known as gravel packing is attracting attention as a means of controlling these factors and contributing to the productive life of a well. That gravel packing is now substantially beyond the preliminary stage on the Pacific Coast is reflected in the 191,000 bbl. of oil produced monthly by the 66 gravel-packed wells in 11 different producing sectors. Reasons fob Gravel Packing Gravel packing, if properly carried out, can be expected to provide the following benefits: 1. Prevent the movement of sand and thus eliminate sand production and sand fills, and prevent the formation of cavities. 2. Provide a practical, relatively inexpensive, large-diameter hole, which will provide well-known theoretical advantages. 3. Support the walls of the hole by completely filling the space between the liner and the formation, regardless of its irregularities, and afford a support for liners. 4. Provide for more efficient pumping operations in wells by: (a) possibly utilizing the gravel as a gas trap in pumping gaseous fluids, (b) allowing deep submergence of the pump into the oil zone. In a conventional well—that is, where the liner is set in an open hole-. even though perforation sizes are chosen according to known rules based on analysis of sand grains from samples from the zone, there is likely to be some production of sand. The following investigation was undertaken to develop a method for determining with reasonable accuracy the depth of overburdens of 100 ft. or less. Seismic methods seemed to offer good possibilities. The problem differed from that of the familiar salt-dome location in that the depth of overburden to be determined is much less than is encountered in oil prospecting. This means that a much shorter time interval must be measured with accuracy. Refraction methods seem at present to offer greater possibilities than reflection. The air sound persists for from 0.1 to 0.5 sec., because of echoes, and seismic reflections coming during this time are difficult to detect. A seismometer sensitive to vertical vibrations only offers possibilities and has been used here with some success. It is hoped that the application of this type of seismometer to reflection shooting in this region may be investigated still further. The apparatus used consisted of a carbon-button seismometer followed by a three-stage, transformer-coupled, vacuum-tube amplifier and a General Radio string oscillograph. Time marks are provided by a 1000-cycle, 600-r.p.m., synchronous motor provided with five spokes which intercept the light to the camera at 1/50 sec. intervals. This motor is driven by a two-stage vacuum-tube amplifier of 3 watt output, actuated by a tuning fork. The power supply for the seismometer amplifier is one 2-volt storage and one 45-volt B battery. The motor amplifier is powered by a 6-volt storage battery and 6 to 225-volt, 15-watt motor generator. The temperature-frequency characteristics of the tuning fork have been determined and for ordinary working temperatures the error in time that would be introduced is less than M millisecond for time intervals up to 100 milliseconds. The impact is produced by a sledge blow for surface distances less than 100 ft. and dynamite for greater distances. Two steel balls with wires attached form an electric circuit through a 1-ft. piece of railroad rail upon which they rest. THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

As electrical power is used to a greater extent on the Rand than in any other mining center, it is thought that a short description of the methods used and results obtained may be of interest. In comparing Rand practice with that on other fields, several general factors should be borne in mind: First, the mines are all working on large tonnages of low-grade ore (average. $6.50). The annual crushing rate is about 27,000,000 tons. Second, the mines are all grouped udder the financial and engineering control of mining houses, so that the results of a group, rather than an individual mine, are open for study, and practice follows more uniform lines. Third, coal of fair quality (about 12,000 B.t.u.) can be obtained for $2 to $3 per ton., Good supplies of condensing water are, however, scarce, and have to be carefully stored. Power Supply Power is supplied by the Victoria Falls & Transvaal Power Co., Ltd., and its subsidiary, the Rand Mines Power Supply Co. Both companies, which are practically one from an engineering point of view, operate the following stations, all feeding into the same system.

MANY requests for information as to the possibility of washing coals to some predetermined percentage of ash or sulfur have suggested that the producers aim to satisfy some degree of purity set by the user of the fuel, rather than to attain the greatest economic benefit to all concerned. This paper is written to show that the highest economic purity of washed coal can be determined from washability studies of the raw coal, costs of mining and washing coal, and data on the effect of ash and sulphur on the value of the coal for the particular use for which it is intended. COKE FOR BLAST-FURNACE USE For purposes of illustration, we take the case of coal washed for coke to be used in the iron blast furnace. The method outlined can be made general in its application by substituting for the figures used here the actual operating figures for the particular case under consideration. In general, it costs the blast-furnace operation from 8 to 25 c. per ton of pig iron to slag out each 1 per cent. of ash introduced into the blast furnace by the coke. This figure depends on which one per cent. of ash is removed, and decreases with decrease in ash: When blast furnaces and coal mines are considered as a whole, the figure decreases to zero and then becomes negative, on account of low recovery of washed coal. Various figures1 have been given by different investigators: These figures necessarily differ, not only on account of the differences in operating costs but on account of the difference in the respective fuels as well. For the purpose of this paper, which, as explained, is to point out a method of attacking a certain problem, the figures used in the exposition of the method are of secondary importance. It is apparent that no universally applicable figures can be used, because there are none. Each plant has its own coal,2 its own operating cost, and its own conditions.

The magnesium-rich end of the Mg-Ti phase diagram was investigated. The liquidus, solidus, and solvus boundaries to 1 pct Ti were established. All alloys were prepared by saturating molten magnesium with titanium in a consumable titanium crucible under inert gas maintained at 230 psig. The liquidus of the Mg- Ti system was determined by analysis of dip samples taken from 700° to 1300°C under equilibrium conditions in a pressurized inert atmosphere furnace and by analysis of small ingots rapidly poured and quenched from 1400° to 1500°C. The solubility of titanium in magnesium ranged from 0.018 wt pet Ti at 700°C (0.012 wt pet at 650°C by extrapolation) to 1.035 wt pet Ti at 1500°C. The solidus for compositions ranging from 0.03 to 1.00 wt pet Ti was determined to be 650° ± 1°C by thermal analysis. The titanium solid solubility values ranged from 0.08 wt pet at 350°C to 0.19 wt pet by extrapolation to 650°C. The freezing reaction is peritectic. No intermetallic compounds were found in the system; the phase in equilibrium with molten magnesium saturated with titanium was found to be titanium with magnesium in solid solution. Solid titanium will dissolve at least 1.32 wt pct Mg. PREVIOUS investigations of the Mg-Ti system have shown considerable disagreement on the solubility of titanium in liquid magnesium. Furthermore, the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium has not been well established. Liquidus curves for previous work and for the present investigation are shown in Fig. 1. Aust and Pidgeon1 used a dip-sampling method on molten magnesium held in equilibrium with solid titanium under a protective atmosphere to determine the solubility and found that it ranged from 0.0025 wt pet Ti at 651°C to 0.015 wt pet Ti at 850°C. Eisenreich2 introduced titanium into molten magnesium by means of TiCL4 adsorbed on BaCl2. Ingots were then cast at various temperatures. Making the assumption that only the titanium dissolved in magnesium at the time of casting was soluble in H2SO4, Eisenreich determined the solubility of titanium in molten magnesium to range from 0.003 wt pet at 655°C to 0.115 wt pet at 800°C. Eisenreich also determined the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.015 wt pet at room temperature and 0.045 wt pet at 500°C. Since the solid solubility just below the freezing temperature for the bulk of the alloy was much larger than the liquid solubility just above the freezing temperature, Eisenreich concluded that the freezing reaction was peritectic. Obinata et al.3 equilibrated molten magnesium with titanium in hermetically sealed titanium containers which were then furnace-cooled. The titanium content of the magnesium was then determined and found to range from 0.170 wt pet at 700°C to 0.85 wt pet at 1200°C. No intermetallic compound was found in the system. The Armour Research Foundation4 determined two points on the solvus by electrical resistivity methods: 0.00057 wt pet at 200°C and 0.0008 wt pet at 300°C. At higher temperatures, data were meaningless with no trends observable. The authors of this report believed that the lack of significant data at the higher temperatures was due to variations in specimen geometry, although there was no positive evidence to verify this supposition. The present investigation was undertaken to clarify the uncertainty in both the liquidus and solvus of the magnesium-rich end of the Mg-Ti system. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS The equipment used in this investigation, with some modifications, was essentially that used by Crosby and Fowler5 in their determination of part of the Mg-Zr phase diagram. The equipment, as modified for this work, is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of a sealed furnace chamber which can be pressurized with inert gas so that melts can be made above the boiling point of magnesium at atmospheric pressure. Melts are made by induction heating in a titanium crucible which, after diffusion of sufficient magnesium into the walls of the crucible to saturate the titanium at the sampling temperature, comprises the solid phase in equilibrium with the molten magnesium. Dip samples may be taken with the sampling tube, or the entire furnace may be tilted so that ingots may be poured into a mold in the side chamber. The principal difference from the earlier apparatus is in the thermocouple, which in the present equipment is enclosed in a protection tube and immersed directly in the melt. The tips of both the thermocouple protection tube and the sampling tube, which dip into the melt, are made of high-purity titanium. STUDY of the ore deposits of Colorado has disclosed, in numerous places, sharp changes in both mineralogy and metal content of the primary or hypogene deposits with change in depth. A clear understanding of the meaning of these changes is requisite to form intelligent conclusions that can be applied in the exploration of such ore deposits. This paper is an attempt to set forth some of the geologic and chemical relations of minerals that bear on this problem. The effect of the differing electrode potentials of elements on the order of oxidation and on the order of displacement of one metal by another metal in supergene sulfide deposits has been studied for many years by several investigators. The results all agree rather closely with the original Schürmann series of replacability of metal sulfides, as Wells has shown.1 So far as the writers are aware there has been little attempt from the geologist's viewpoint to correlate the electrode potentials of the elements, other than those of the common metals, with the positions and mode of combination of the elements as found in ore deposits, and in particular in hypogene deposits. Wells' discusses electrochemical activity between solutions and certain ore minerals and mentions the possibility of its effect in precipitation reactions. The senior writer for a number of years has emphasized the importance of oxidation-reduction reactions as a factor in the formation of certain hypogene ore minerals, and as the electrode potentials are a measure of the relative oxidizing and reducing power of the elements and their ions, it seems possible that a study of them may offer some suggestions on certain problems. The data at present available for such a line of attack on oxidation-reduction reactions are too far from complete to offer much help, nevertheless the table of standard electrode potentials

The equilibria at 1 atm total pressure and 600° to 1300°C (1112° to 2372°F) between gas mixtures with various partial pressures of the reactive constituents (principally sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen or carbon monoxide, and hydrogen) and coexisting solid phases (groups variously including calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, iron, ferrous sulfide, and the iron oxides) are examined. Tables and charts show the combinations of temperature, oxygen activity, and carbon dioxide partial pressure under which the various groups of the solid phases coexist and the corresponding sulfur dioxide pressures. In the presence of calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, and calcium oxide, the partial pressure of sulfur dioxide has a peak value at each temperature which increases from 101 atm at about 800°C (1472°F) to 1 atm at about 1200°C (2192°F). With water vapor present, hydrogen sulfide may predominate among gaseous sulfur compounds, particularly at low temperatures and oxygen activities; under all other circumstances considered, sulfur dioxide is the dominant gaseous sulfur-bearing species.

Leach liquors derived from the processing of nickel ores are generally highly contaminated and contain appreciable free acid. Methods are described for obtaining a commercial grade of concentrate from such solutions using pyrrhotite as the seed material to abstract nick- el, cobalt, etc. from solution. At temperatures in excess of 160° C., recoveries of 99% can be obtained from contaminated solutions where the free acidity is as high as 0.5 M in sulphuric acid. At lower temperatures down to 80° C., high recoveries can also be obtained either by adding H2S to the system with appropriate adjustment of the free acidity or by using "activated" pyrrhotite or artificial FeS in the system without prior addition of H2S. The methods are applicable to liquors derived from either oxide or sulphide ores, and the products are suitable for smelting or other known processes used to obtain pure metals. The mechanism of the reaction appears to vary with the operating temperature, and the results ye therefore discussed in the light of electron probe and optical microscopic studies.

At the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, in their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.' The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper,which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. In my biographical notice of Thomas: read at the New york meeting of the Institute, February, 1885, I show. that the working-out of the process was not a hap-hazard or accidental inspiration, but the culmination of many years of investigation of experiments and theories which had been carried on aid advanced by chemists and metallurgists at home and abroad.

This paper presents an investigation of the accuracy of population balance model predictions for ball mill scale-up. Experiments performed in 25.4 x 29.2 cm (10 x 11.5) batch mill are used to estimate linear grinding rate parameters that, in turn are scaled according to specific power draft to predict performance in 381 x 292 mm (15 x 11.5 in.) and 762 x 457 mm (30 x 18 in.) batch and continuous ball mills, respectively. Results are presented for wet and dry grinding of two homogeneous solids, limestone (soft) and quartz (hard), and one heterogeneous solid, a complex molybdenite ore. In all cases good agreement between predicted and experimental product size distributions was obtained.

An analogy is drawn between the buckling of tubing in pumping wells and a fiube, fitted with frictionless pistom, linked by an inelastic rod, and which is subject to an internal pressure. A simple derivation shows that the critical internal pressure exerts a hydrostatic force on the pisfon which is close to the Euler load for compression buckling of the same tube. While the results agree with those of Ref. I, the basis of calculations has been changed and clarified. The presence of internal upsets at the pistons is discussed. INTRODUCTION In the Appendix, Lubinski and Blenkarn state that a tube with ends closed by frietionless pistons connected by an inelastic rod (Fig. 1) will behave as a column loaded with a force equal to the tension force in the rod. They note that, while the fluid may not resist a shear force, the moment in every cross section is piston force multiplied by the elastic line deflection (c.f., the loaded column). Since the equations of the elastic lines are similar in the two cases, the solution is carried over from the loaded column. On the contrary it is suggested that while the method of solution remains unchanged from the column case, the actual stress distribution is different, a fact which is taken into account in this note. A simple method of approximating the buckling pressure is given, and their reasoning in our mathematical language is continued. GENERAL EQUATIONS The equation of an elastic line, initially straight in the x direction (Fig. 2), is given by In the case of a loaded column, this may be written: For the pressurized tube it was shown, by analogy with the loaded column, that tion has a solution that, for P, = EI/P, any deflection is stable (a criterion for buckling). An attempt will be made to describe more precisely, the forces acting on the tube, and to analyze the buckling condi,tions. DISCUSSION If the tube assumed a deflected position, the volume between the pistons would increase so that in deflecting, the energy of the fluid would decrease. When the increase in elastic energy of the tube (due to bending) is equal to the decrease of fluid pressure energy, buckling conditions exist. Analyzing the forces on the tube (Fig. 3), two transverse forces, T,, T,, exerted by the pistons, are balanced by a resultant of the pressure elements which are linearly dependent on the local curvature of the elastic line (Fig. 4). Unlike most buckling cases, the forces depend on the shape of the elastic line, a condition that makes a rigorous mathematical treatment difficult. Several approximations may be used to clarify the problem.

The development of a geological department as an integral part of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham district, Alabama, in 1908 was an innovation probably unique for any mining organization south of the Ohio River. At that time a few of the oil companies were starting geological departments, but there were no geologists among the larger industrial organizations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. had been a substantial producer of pig iron for many years and was just getting a start in the manufacture of steel products from the pig iron. It had large acreages of coal land, ore land and timber land, but there was lacking the detailed knowledge of the possible mineral resources of much of its territory, and this territory at that time covered an area in the neighborhood of 500,000 acres in the states of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Those responsible for the operations of the mining properties, not being familiar with the kind of help that might be expected from geologic work, were decidedly skeptical of the utility of the work. Therefore it was necessary to develop cooperation with the mining organization, by not infringing upon its functions, and by developing the work in such a manner as to demonstrate to the mining department its practical utility. In the first instance the man responsible for a mining operation is apt to assume the attitude that the geologist is a blockader, because the geologist, unfortunately, is obliged to point out difficulties in the carrying out of mining operations in the way originally planned. He points out the dangers of mining out one coal or metal seam at the ultimate expense of an upper or lower seam, and he develops structural features, such as faults and folds, which call to the attention of the mining operator difficulties in his future operations, which the latter had not anticipated. Eventually, however, the value of having these data became apparent to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., and the operators not only welcomed the geological work and cooperated fully in its acquisition of essential information, but reached the point of asking assistance and advice; and complete coordination of the two activities has existed for many years.

SINCE I have told you of the distillation of waters and the extraction of oils from things-all ingenious and useful processes-I wish to continue to speak of the arts. I am reminded that I first wish to write down for you the discourse that I made to you on another occasion a few days ago concerning the operation of a mint, so that if you have lost it from your memory (and this would not be surprising since you have had no practice in it) you may repossess it if you should need to practice it or even to talk about it, and if you find yourself in this activity it may not be new to you. I told you, as I believe you will remember and so again I repeat, that a very great and constant diligence is required by one who wishes to operate a mint well, or to have it operated, because it has many parts which it is necessary for anyone who enters this work to understand very well; indeed, if he wishes that all the work of his helpers be done well, he will have to do it himself. And if it were possible, he should have a hundred hands and a hundred eyes together, and at the same time should be in different places, because some loss often occurs in what is handled because of the carelessness of the workers or because of their little real trustworthiness. It is understood that such things require great hard labors and many kinds of knowledge. The material handled in this work is most often either gold or silver all ready to be spent, and these things are very attractive to those who handle them. In addition to being made into pieces of money likely to disappear, it is very easy to lose, and whatever part is lacking for any reason whatever [132v] brings detriment and loss to the patron since it is a thing of value. Therefore, in short, anyone who wishes to exercise this art well, without being fraudulent therein, must watch the weights with all care because the essence of this art is naught but the division of a quantity of weight into many exactly defined pieces and the alloying of gold by carats and of silver by leghe, exactly established in accordance with what the prince grants you as remedy.* If through negligence you exceed in perfection
