On January 1, 1948, we boarded the cage at 7 a.m. and were dropped to the 900 level of the Brunswick shaft. The previous evening, we had attended the New Year's party at the Miners' Guild Hall and as this soireée had not disbanded until the small hours of the morning, we had only had about two to three hours sleep. At the 900 level station, we fell in beside our mining partner, a Cousin Jack, who was known by all as Porky. Porky didn't say anything as we plodded down the drift, we didn't say anything either-in fact there was little conversation by anybody.

FLOTATION requires the existence of a definite contact angle. This contact angle, the surface tension of the solution, and adsorption at the solid-fluid interface are quantitatively related. Adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate on hematite was measured for a wide range of concentrations of reagent in solution. Similar measurements for quartz have already been made. Contact angle measurements were then made on polished surfaces of hematite and of quartz immersed in aqueous dodecylammonium acetate solutions, and a functional relationship was sought between adsorption density at the mineral-solution interface and the contact angle. Finally, the surface tension of the aqueous amine acetate solutions was measured. These data were combined to give an evaluation of the work of adhesion for the three-phase system. Specular hematite was crushed and then ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, with flint pebbles, to pass a 200-mesh screen. The ground product was sized in a Haultain infrasizer, and one of the granular sizes (cone No. 3) was used in all adsorption tests. A hand magnet was used to remove magnetite and abraded iron. Quartz was removed in a Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator. The purified hematite was leached in aqua regia, washed with distilled water until the washings appeared free of electrolyte by conductance measurement, dried in a low-temperature oven, and stored in a pyrex container. The specific surface of the closely sized hematite was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.' Three measurements gave an average value of 1350 sq cm per g. Chemical analysis showed Fe -69.37 pct, insol = 0.72 pct. The quartz used in the flotation tests had been prepared by Chang" for an earlier investigation. Demineralized distilled water was used for all test solutions. Dissolved salt content was of the order of 0.03 ppm, expressed in terms of sodium chloride, as estimated from conductance measurements. Dodecylammonium acetate was obtained from Armour & CO. in two forms, the unmarked compound and a preparation marked by carbon 14 in the hydrocarbon chain of the aminium ion. Specific activity of the active salt was 0.134 millicurie per g. The important physico-chemical constants for the primary amine salt have been reviewed by de Bruyn. The calculated effect of hydrolysis of amine salt on pH of aqueous solutions and the effect of pH on the distribution ratio of the alkylammonium ion to free amine are of particular interest. All other chemicals used in this investigation were of analytical reagent grade. A column method' was used for adsorption work. Attainment of equilibrium distribution in the adsorption column depends on the solid-solution contact time, hence upon the volume of solution passed. It was assumed that contact time required for equilibrium would be a maximum for the lowest reagent concentrations. On this premise it was demonstrated experimentally that the passage of 500 ml of solution through the mineral bed was adequate. An aliquot (1 to 5 cc) of the solution to be analyzed was transferred to a small pyrex cup and allowed to evaporate to dryness at room temperature; 4 or 5 mg of unmarked amine acetate were added to the dried sample and the cup and its contents were transferred to the combustion system for analysis. Evaporation at room temperature must be emphasized, as even slightly elevated temperatures result in loss of reagent. A laboratory model G Beckman pH meter equipped with a glass electrode was used to measure pH of amine acetate solutions. The technique of internal gas counting of radioactive carbon dioxide in a Geiger-Muller counter was used. Developed originally by Brown and Miller,- his method was adapted to the analysis of carbon-14 marked flotation reagents by Chang, de Bruyn, and Bloecher. nalytica1 method and procedures have been described in detail by Bloecher.' Contact angles were measured by the captive-bubble technique." The mineral specimens were carefully selected to avoid cracks and inclusions of other minerals. ENROLLMENT of both undergraduate and graduate mineral engineering students rose approximately 11.8 pct over last year to a total of 12,830. Leading again in the enrollment climb was ceramic engineering which increased by about 21 pct. Approximated increases in enrollment of the other mineral engineering categories, in order, were: metallurgical 17.7 pct; petroleum 13.3 pct; geological and geophysical 3.3 pct: and mining proper, the lowest with 2.9 pct. Total ECPD school enrollment climbed to 242,405 -just below the 1947 peak, but 14.4 pct higher than 1955. Engineering enrollments have shown a general increase since 1951, and freshmen enrollments have climbed steadily since 1950.

Most metallurgists appreciate the great need of a process for the extraction and recovery of valuable metals from complex ore, where the presence of one metal increases the cost of extracting the other rnetals to such an extent that not any of the metals can be extracted at a profit. We need only refer to some of the mines in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, where oxidation has taken place and the sulphur, zinc, copper, and some of the iron and other metals have been leached out, large bodies of oxidized ore remaining, rich in lead, silver, and sometimes gold. These metals have been concentrated by the removal of the other metals, leaving a very desirable ore for treatment in the blast-furnace for the production of lead bullion, and recovery of the silver and gold. If lead is not present, the gold and silver metals are usually recovered by some method of milling, or the ore is shipped to a smelter, where it is mixed with lead ore or copper-iron sulphide ore from some other mine. In these same mines, when developed to greater depth below the leached or oxidized zone, the ore is found to contain the original mixture of sulphur, zinc, copper, etc., added to, or I should say left with, the lead, silver, and gold values; but instead of adding to the value of the ore, the presence of these elements, especially zinc, makes the copper, silver, and gold of less value, and often worthlees. Such was the experience of the oldest mines in Leadville,.Colo., until methods of mechanical separation of the lead from the zinc were developed sufficiently to allow of some profit by the making of a concentrate rich in zinc to be shipped to the zinc smelter, and sometimes a lead concentrate which could be shipped to the lead smelter; but even in these cases the waste of the different metals is a very serious matter. In the very best concentrating plants some zinc will be left in the lead concentrate, to be lost and to give considerable trouble in the lead-smelting furnace. On the other hand, some of the lead, with a large percentage of the copper and silver, will follow the zinc into the zinc concentrate, to be, perhaps, recovered by smelting the cinder or clinker left in the re-

This paper describes a study, based on core data, of the directional permeability of a sandstone reservoir. Directional air permeabilities are explained and correlated with lithology by the tensor theory of permeability, which is extended to the more general case of heterogeneous anisotzopic porous media. In this case, the permeability tensor is made up of two components: (I) anisotropy (variation around a point) which correlates with bedding, and (21 heterogeneity (variation from point-to-point) which correlates with grain size. INTRODUCTION Previous studies of directional permeabilityl.5-8 have concerned themselves only with anisotropy at a point, rather than with both point-to-point differences and local anisotropies. In this paper, we present the existing tensor theory of permeability for anisotropic porous media and then extend it to the more general case of heterogeneous anisotropic porous media. The laboratory measurements of directional permeability are explained in view of this extended theory and the data are discussed in terms of the lithologic factors that correlate with it. The results show what the heterogeneity and anisotropy of the reservoir element are, and that the directional permeability correlates with lithology. Data used in this paper are measurements of air permeability in eight directions, spaced at 45° intervals, on 142 2-in. vertical plugs from 30 cores. The core data are meaningful in terms of directional permeability because the cores were oriented to within 45O during drilling and coring.3 Although we initially thought that only 60 per cent of the core material was reliable, subsequent study showed that almost all of it was reliably oriented. After determining the air permeabilities, the data were reduced to three independent variables for each plug: the major and minor permeability axes, and the direction of the major axis. These were obtained by converting the permeability data to the reciprocal square root of permeability and fitting the transformed data with ellipses according to the tensor theory of permeability.8 The point-to-point areal variation of the minimum permeability axis is related to grain size. The direction of the permeability axes, where the major axis exceeds the minor axis by at least 5 per cent (measured variation is about 4 per cent), correlates with the bedding. The permeability tensor used in this study must be considered as the sum of a scalar and a tensor, with the scalar being the minor axis permeability as a function of position, and the tensor the directional effect, which is additive permeability over the minor axis. In this case, the point-to-point variation or heterogeneity (minor axis) is substantially larger than the variation at a point or anisotropy. It may be important that this separation of "directional permeabilities" be recognized when considering migration of fluids due to permeability variation. Local migration may be due to anisotropy and point-to-point migration may be due to heterogeneity, but the direction and magnitude of these may not be the same. Furthermore, in truly heterogeneous systems, one would expect that anisotropy would be the smaller of the two effects. (communication to the Secretary) : Mr Hartman says (p. 4 of the pamphlet) that the penetration of air into the crucible of the blast-furnace " is, of course, a function of the diameter of the nozzle." To this I would emphatically take exception. Fig. 1 represents a vertical ideal section of tuyere, cruciblewalls and charge, immediately at the tuyere, in which the currents of air are represented, both in quantity and in direction, by the tortuous black-lines emanating from the nozzle-opening and passing through channels of the least resistance. As an electric current, flowing by various conductors to a common point, is carried in quantity inversely as the resistance of those conductors, so here the air ramifies through the most open cavities or channels, relatively little of it passing where the resistance due to fine materials is great. This figure represents the course of currents in the vertical plane only. As a matter of fact, they pass away in every plane, as opportunity offers. The effect of blocking or decreasing the area of the nozzleopening would certainly only decrease the quantity of air entering by that particular tuyere, without assisting penetration. The large channels (b, b, Fig. 1, for example) would still carry the larger part of the air, while again the smaller channels (a, a, a) would continue small and take no larger percentage of the air than before. These channels momentarily change, however, with the slow descent of the coke. Further on (p. 5), Mr. Hartman describes the dispersive effect of a single lump of fuel. He has only to conceive the entire spaces before the tuyere-nozzles as filled with such lumps, in order to parallel the condition of affairs I have just explained. It is where the large pieces of the charge come down, that the mass is the most open, and the blast passes most freely. On the other hand, wherever the fine ore collects combustion proceeds slowly, because of the smaller supply of air. The

The material balance equation used by reservoir engineers is arranged algebraically, resulting in an equation of a straight line. The straight line method of analysis imposes an additional necessary condition that a successful solution of the material balance equatiott should meet. In addition, this algebraic arrangement attaches a dynamic ineuning to the otherwise static material balance equation. The straight line method requires the plotting of one variable group vs mother variable group. The sequence of the plotted points as well as the general shape of the resulting plot is of utmost importance. Therefore, one cannot progrm the method entirely on a digital computer ar is usually done in the routine solution of the material balance equation. If this method is applied, then plotting and anaIysis are asential. Only the appropriate equations and the method of analysis and interpremtion with comments and discussion are presented in this paper. Illustrative field examples for the various cases treated are deferred to a subsequent writing. INTRODUCTION One of the fundamental principles utilized in engineering work is the law of conservation of matter. The application of this principle to hydrocarbon reservoirs for the purpose of quantitative deductions and prediction is termed "the material balance method of reservoir analysis". While the construction of the material balance equation (MBE) and the computations that go with its application are not difficult tasks, the criteria that a successful solution of the MBE should fulfill have always been a problem facing the reservoir engineer. True and complete criteria should embody necessary and dcient conditions. The criteria which the reservoir engineer uses possess a few necessary but no sufficient conditions. Because of this, the answers obtained from the MBB are always open to question. However, the degree of their acceptability should increase with the increase in the number of the necessary conditions that they should satisfy. Generally, the necessary conditions commonly used are (1) an unspecified consistency of the results and (2) the agreement between the MBE results and those determined volumetrically. This second criterion is usually overemphasized. Actually, the volumetrically determined results are based on geological and petrophysical data of unknown accuracy. In addition, the oil-in-place obtained by the MBE is that oil which contributes to the pressure-production history,' while the volumetrically calculated oil-in-place refers to the total oil, part of which may not contribute to said history. Because of this difference, the disagreement between the two answers might be of paramount importance, and the concordance between them should not be overemphasized as the measure of correctness of either one. In this paper, a third necessary condition of mathematical as well as physical significance is discussed. It is not subject to any geological or petrophysical interpretation, and as such, it is probably the most important necessary condition. It consists essentially of rearranging the MBE to result in an equation of a straight line. This straight line method of the MBE solution has invalidated a few long time accepted concepts. For instance, it has always been advocated that if a water drive exists, but one neglects to take it into account in the MBE, the calculated oil-in-place should increase with time. The straight line method shows that in some cases, depending on the size of the neglected aquifer, the calculated oil-in-place might decrease with time. The straight line method requires the plotting of a variable group vs another variable group, with the variable group selection depending on the mechanism of production under which the reservoir is producing. The most important aspect of this method of solution is that it attaches a significance to the sequence of the plotted points, the direction in which they plot, and to the shape of the resulting plot. Thus, a dynamic meaning has been introduced into the picture in arriving at the final answer. Since the emphasis of this method is placed on the interpretation of the sequence of the points and the shape of the plot, one cannot completely automate the whole sequence to obtain "the best value" as normally done in the routine application of the MBE. If one uses the straight line method, then plotting and analysis are musts. The straight line method was first recognized by van Everdingen, et al,2 but for some reason it was never fully exploited. The advantages and the elegance of this method can be more appreciated after a few cases are carefully treated and worked out by it. SOLUTION OF THE MATERIAL BALANCE EQUATION SATURATED RESERVOIRS The MBE for saturated reservoirs written in AIME symbols is

The earliest U. S. patent on a crushing machine was issued in 1830. The device incorporated the drop hammer principle later used in the famous stamp mill, whose history is so intimately linked with that of the golden age of American Mining. Eli Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock-breaker --the Blake jaw crusher--patented in 1858. The idea of his mechanical principle, the powerful-toggle linkage, was so sound that today the Blake -type jaw crusher is the standard by which all jaw crushers are judged. In 1881, Philetus Gates was granted a patent on a machine which included in its design all the essential features of the modern gyra tory crusher. For some years after these pioneer machines were developed, crushing requirements were quite simple. All underground mining and open-pit quarrying was done by hand with tonnages and rock sizes generally small. In the milling of precious metal ores, stamp mills were popular as the final reduction machine. The stamps were fed with an ore size readily produced by one break through small gyratory or jaw crushers. Even in large underground mining operations, there was no demand for large crushers; and increasing tonnage requirements were met by duplicating the small units. The Homestake gold mine in South Dakota was a good example, where in 19 15 twenty -two small Gates gyratory crushers were used to prepare the ore for the batteries of 2,500 stamps. Open pit mines and the introduction of the steam shovel created a demand for larger crushers, which led to the development of a gyratory with an 18 in. (457 mm) receiving opening. Up to this time, the jaw crusher had kept pace with the gyratory, both from the standpoint of receiving opening and capacity; but now the gyratory stepped into a 15-year lead with larger and larger sizes. This trend toward large primary crushers started just before the turn of the century, and in 1910 crushers with 48 in. (1.22 m) receiving openings were being built. About this time, the jaw crusher was revived in a great contribution to primary crushing by the introduction of the 84 in. by 60 in. (2. 13 by 1. 52 m) machine. This crusher was usually followed by a 24 in. (6 10 mm) opening gyratory crusher for secondary breakage, a system which reawakened the industry to the use of the jaw crusher as a primary breaker. It is interesting that although his machines never came into general use, Thomas A. Edison ranks as a pioneer in the development of the large primary breaker. The object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions. Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting that other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific'' and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera. Elementary Composition as a Basis of Classification There can be little doubt that the ultimate or elementary composition of "pure coal" is the best basis of classification. It was soon after the perfection of the method of elementary analysis of organic substances by Liebig that Regnault, the distinguished chemist and physicist, laid down the principle that coals of the same kind vary only between narrow limits of elementary composition. This is still the widest generalization that can be made about coal. Upon it the metallurgist Gruner based his classification. In some quarters the value of the ultimate composition was denied, Stein going so far as to say that it teaches us nothing of importance about coal. One still hears statements that it is like crushing a work of art in a mortar and analyzing the powder, or like counting the number of times a given letter occurs in a sentence. Such comparisons are misleading, and the criticism might be applied to organic chemistry as a whole. Nor is the existence of isomerism, or of entirely different substances which

IN the measurement of retained austenite concentrations in steels using the integrated intensity method,1 Averbach has pointed out" that the absorption factor A(0) for a flat sample making a glancing angle 4 with the incident X-ray beam can be combined with his constant factor R to obtain our constant factor" G provided that "1—There is no preferred orientation in the sample, and 2—The geometric requirements [for the sample, film, and X-ray beam] have been met precisely."' If A(0) can be combined with R to give G according to the equation G = R . A(0) [14] then the possibility for making non-compensating errors in the austenite determination has been eliminated. This has been described previously in a technical note." Because of the brevity of the previous note,3 it was impossible to emphasize the fact that the two conditions on preferred orientation and geometry can be easily met experimentally, contrary to Aver-bach's statement that: ". . . the necessary conditions must be tested experimentally for each determination, and this is done most easily by observing whether the apparent absorption has the form of Eq. 2 [the theoretical equation for A(0)]."" he way in which these two conditions can be met experimentally will be discussed briefly to help clear up this point. In addition to these two conditions, other factors such as sample shape, homogeneity, and grain size which also affect A will be included in this discussion. A (0) depends on sample shape. The theoretical function for A was derived originally for a flat surface.' In general we have found that a flat sample surface is readily obtainable." If such a surface can * The effect of surfaces which are not flat on the measurement of retained austenite will be discussed later. be obtained, it has the following advantages: 1—it is easily reproducible from sample to sample, 2—it is the form required for metallurgical examination —this type of examination being frequently desirable for this work, and 3—it is an efficient shape for diffraction purposes. Perhaps the most important of these features is that a flat sample surface is easily reproducible; hence, this requirement on the repro-ducibility of A from sample to sample is met for all such samples. The angle of the sample surface and the monochromatic beam can be adjusted by rotating about the vertical axis, The film holder can also be rotated about B so that the film can be exposed over the desired angular range. For Fe K, X = 1.932A. 1011 planes of quartz have d = 3.35A. A(0) depends on homogeneity and grain size. If the sample is badly segregated or the grain size is large, the effect of micro-absorption and primary extinction1. ' must be considered. It has been shown, however, that for most plain carbon or low alloy hardened steels, neither micro-absorption nor primary extinction effects are present.' A (0) depends on camera geometry. For a given angle 0, A remains theoretically constant from a geometrical viewpoint only if the following factors are kept constant: 1—the angle of inclination .+ of the sample to the X-ray beam, and 2—the centering of the sample with respect to the film cylinder. These are mechanical problems which can be solved readily if the facilities of a good machine shop are available. The arrangement used to insure that the angle 4 remains constant and the centering of the sample is reproducible is indicated schematically in Fig. 1. WILLIAM H. KOBBÉ (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with much interest the discussion of my paper by Arthur Knapp and I. N. Knapp published in the March Bulletin. These discussions apparently assume that my paper advances a. number of ideas that are not intended: 1. That the total sandbody or pay is to be removed. 2. That upon bringing this sand and oil to the surface 100 per cent., or perfect separation, can take place. 3. That this tremendous quantity of sand is then hauled away in wagons and distributed as road material. The paper raider discussion is not a theoretical treatment of the subject but is the result of actual experience in oil production under the conditions mentioned.. That wells that produce sand produce in ore oil, and the best operating methods to bring this about are fully treated. It is, of course, impossible to remove all the oil sand underlying a property, but the greater the amount removed the greater becomes the production of oil. As stated in my paper, the surface disposal of this large volume of sand is a problem and the only use to which it can be put is road surfacing; but I did not intend to convey the idea that all this sand was thus used. Only a very small quantity was required on the company's roads, and two wagons only were employed for this purpose. The remaining sand accumulated in the numerous "washes" and sumps. Although this sand contained sufficient oil to stain the hands, it was, surprisingly dry and could be easily shoveled. As stated in the paper, "the piles of sand are gradually freed of their oil content and a crust forms on their surface which will bear the weight of a man." I consider this a high degree of separation. A small amount of oil necessarily remains in the sand and is held there by capillarity. Otherwise it would be useless as a road binder, and, furthermore, to recover such oil special processes of treating are required. Arthur Knapp says, "of the total volume produced by pumping, not more than 4 or 5 per cent. can possibly be sand." I cannot agree with this statement as I have managed many properties where the wells were so operated that the amount of sand produced was five times this figure.

When I had the honor of presenting to the Institute at the Buffalo meeting in October, 1888 (Trans., xvii., 226), my paper on " Steel Rails and Specifications for their Manufacture," I expressed my hesitancy in submitting my ideal rail-sections. Since then, continued residence in Chicago, perhaps, or greater intercourse with railroad officials, has either given me more courage or has taught me that so little is really known on the subject that one is safe in expressing one's views, let them be ever so erroneous. As a further personal excuse, I may remind you that " fools rush in," etc. At all events, I would now call attention to certain rail-sections which I believe to be good. I do not say they are the best, but I feel sure they have more merit than the majority of the adopted heavier-sectioned rails. In determining the proper form for a rail, the subject should be considered from two points; first, and most important, the duty required ; second, and of almost equal importance, the influence of existing details of manufacture upon the character of the finished product. It is perfectly proper that all the strains to which the rail will be subjected should be considered and calculated. But its ability to resist them will depend quite as much upon the character of the metal as upon the form of its section. That which would be the realization of the ideal with good steel would be disappointment with poorer metal. Therefore, the railroad engineer should always have in mind and pay due respect to what the metal worker may give him—the may being the factór of danger to be covered by his factor of safety, and possessing greater importance than any formula laid down by never so eminent authorities. It is well-known how positive is my conviction that high heat during manufacture and good rails cannot go together; hence, if we insist upon the avoidance of this evil by rail-makers, we must give them sections which can be made at low temperatures with commercial as well as technical success. IN this country steel made in a Siemens furnace or Bessemer converter, is generally tapped into a ladle or shoe, and then drawn through an aperture in its base into the various moulds. In order to regulate the flow of the molten mass a refractory valve is arranged at the aperture. A plumbago nozzle is fixed firmly in this aperture, and a stopper of like material is fitted to it, making a socket valve. In order to raise and depress this stopper at will, a rod is fastened-to it, extending through, the metal and over the brim of the ladle, where it is bent back in a half circle and secured in a slide. This slide plays vertically in a frame, permanently fastened to the outside of the ladle, and is moved by a lever having as a fulcrum a pin fixed in this frame, one end, of the lever being temporarily fixed to the slide, and the other end being moved by hand. Reference being had to the drawing (see Plate 1, Fig. 1), E is the nozzle, D is the stopper, A is the rod, protected as hereinafter described, C is the cast-iron framework, B is the wrought-iron slide, B' is the offset into which the rod, A, enters, and is secured in the usual manner by a key, a. Section J, K, shows the manner of hanging the lever. J is a pin attached to the slide by which the end of the lever raises the slide, B. J is the fulcrum fastened to the frame, C. K (Fig. 1) is a hand-nut fastening the slide, B, to the frame, C, at will. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of ladle, showing the outside working of the parts above described. It is the common practice to protect the rod, A, by a coating of clay and fire-sand, kneaded to the right consistency and applied to the rod, and then thoroughly dried. Just before casting, the plumbago stopper, D, is heated at its extremity to redness separate from the ladle and, at the moment of pouring, is placed in the ladle and slide, and adjusted as well as practicable. Some very serious defects ensue, causing much trouble and vexation as well as actual loss. The fire-clay coating in drying becomes cracked and seamy, and at its best is more or less loose on the rod. ARGUMENTS and discussions were not lacking either Wednesday or Thursday mornings, when the geophysicists got together. The first session, under the chairmanship of Paul Weaver, was devoted largely to theoretical papers, except for the first one by F. W. Lee, which was a progress report. This speaker mentioned some of the high lights of geophysical exploration during the last year, such as the recently announced extension of the Rand gold fields through magnetic exploration, and the continued activity in the oil fields of this country. Even this brought forth some disagreements, Paul Weaver feeling that credit was being given geophysics where it was not due for the discovery of certain oil fields. In this criticism Everette DeGolyer concurred, and both agreed that geophysicists must lean over backward when it comes to taking credit for discoveries. The troublesome question of interpreting resistivity curves is always being aired, and Lynn G. Howell's paper, presented briefly by the chairman, served to clear up a moot point raised last year by M. King Hubbert's work. By use of Maxwell's theory of images the author calculated that the effect of a thin, conductive sheet placed perpendicularly across the middle of a four electrode system should bring the resistivity curve up to a figure equivalent to the resistivity of the surrounding medium, but no higher. Variations from this he explained as being due to dirt on the surface of the sheet. The difficult question of interpreting three-layer curves was tackled bravely in Thomas Manhart's paper, presented in abstract by S. F. Kelly. The author seems to be attaining some success through dividing three-layer curves into two approximation curves of the two-layer type.

Kinking in zinc single-crystal tension specimens was observed under conditions of low stress and high temperature. Kinking is discussed in relation to other plastic bending phenomena on the basis of dislocation theory. Experiments on the stress-induced motion of small angle boundaries are reported. KINKING was first reported by Orowan1 as a new deformation mechanism. He observed the phenomenon in cadmium single crystals loaded in compression. Glide lamellae in a local region of the rod were observed to snap over suddenly to a tilted position, resulting in a sudden shortening of the specimen. Between the tilted portion and the rest of the crystal there were fairly sharp boundaries, with the slip plane assuming approximately mirror image positions on opposite sides of these boundaries. Orowan considered the boundaries to be regions where dislocations had concentrated. Hess and Barrett' observed the formation of kinks in critically oriented zinc compression specimens. It was found that the sudden snapping over of the tilted region was not an essential part of the kinking phenomenon but rather was associated with the method of loading. Kinking was explained on the basis of the accepted mechanisms of slip and flexural glide. It was also suggested that a kink can be considered as a special type of deformation band. During a recent investigation of the effect of surface condition on creep of zinc single crystals," a similar phenomenon was observed in crystals which were loaded in tension. The specimens were 0.4 in. diam cylindrical rods with a free length of 4 in. between end connections. All of the crystals were tested at a constant load. adjusted to give an extension rate of approximately 0.05 pct per hr. Kinking, as shown in Fig. 1, occurred in some of the tests performed at temperatures above 200°C. Kinking was observed in specimens varying widely in initial orientation, scattering about a 45" angle between the slip plane and the specimen axis. The condition leading to kinking in tension appeared to be non-uniform distribution of flow along the gage length combined with the restraint imposed by the tensile load. At low temperatures and fast strain rates, the distribution of strain throughout the midsection of tension specimens was generally quite uniform; therefore, bend planes developed only near the ends as described by Miller.4 However, at high temperatures under creep conditions it was difficult to obtain specimens in which the distribution of flow was uniform. Some of the factors which may have caused differences in flow stress along the length of the crystals are: Nonuniform distribution of impurities, accidents of growth (lineage structure), slight bending or other damage during handling, surface conditions, and strain-aging characteristics due to dissolved nitrogen." Plastic flow, once started in a local region, often continued to a relatively large strain before other parts of the gage length became active. Under these conditions a series of kinks, such as those in Fig. 1, were produced. Fig. 2 illustrates how a nonuniform distribution of slip produces bending moments which- are responsible for kink formation. If no plastic bending were to occur while the rod extended by pure slip in two separate sections of the rod, it would assume a shape such as that in Fig. 2a. A specimen having this shape and being subjected to a tension load would have concentrations of stress at the concave surfaces C and lower than average stress would exist at the convex surfaces D. Therefore a bending moment is superimposed on the average stress in the regions between C and D. The positions of potential bend planes under these conditions are shown as dotted lines. Actually no such shape as Fig. 2a develops because plastic bending in the region C-D occurs simultaneously with pure slip in the intervening regions. The observed structure of a tension kink is indicated by Fig. 2b. Perhaps the best approach to an understanding of kinking as well as other related plastic bending phenomena, such as the bend planes discussed by Miller,' cell formation studied by Wood et al.,6 and polygonization,7 is consideration of the dislocation model of a bent lattice. Current theories of the slip process postulate generation or multiplication of dislocations at certain lattice imperfections. IN presenting this paper it is not intended to enter into any discussion of the theory of the blast-furnace, but simply to give the results of a number of determinations of CO and CO2 in furnace gases, and some conclusions arrived at, and the result of an experiment made in hopes of increasing the production of CO2. In the first table, on page 198, is given the averages of a number of analyses of gases of different furnaces, and in the second, of two stacks of different sizes under varying circumstances. The conclusions arrived at as to what influences the production of CO2 are as follows: 1st. Kind of fuel. Bituminous coal not permitting the formation of as much CO2 as coke. 2d. Kind of ores. Rolling-mill cinder being much less favorable to formation of CO2 than hematite ores, magnetites probably less than hematites, but more than cinder. 3d. Length of time of contact of gases with ore. Small furnaces and too rapid driving both waste fuel by not allowing enough time for conversion of CO into CO2. 4th. The temperature of blast. The hotter the greater the quantity of CO2. 5th. Regularity of passage of stock through the furnace. The hanging and dropping of the stock, however slight, seems to pack it more solidly in the hearth, increases the resistance to the blast, and decreases the quantity of CO,. These are the most common causes noticed which influence the production of CO2, unless we except the one that might be considered the greatest of all, the one that has spoiled so many tons of iron, and the amiability of so many furnacemen, the one most dreaded, the great unknown. It would seem a self-evident proposition that the better the contact of the gases with the ore and the less with the fuel, the greater would be the amount of CO2 produced. To prolong the contact of gas with the ore furnaces are enlarged with advantage, and pains are taken to charge the stock in such a, manner as will best promote it. Still, with furnaces of most approved construction and most skilful manipulation, the gases leave the furnace so rich in CO, that not half the heating power of the fuel is obtained, and the highest

INTRODUCTION THIS paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the com¬bustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a. quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years' practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HISTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow. The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam. The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.
