Cubic ZnSe crystals have been grown with HCl, HBr, and I, as chemical transport reagents. The growth of large, well faceted crystals is in the order HCl < HBr < I, with some produced by I, transport being 1 cm on an edge. ZnSe:I crystals showed no strain in cross polarized light and were homogeneous as determined by electron microprobe. These ZnSe:I crystals had a mobility at 25°C of about 300 sq cm per v-sec and contained 103 dislocations per sq cm; further, these crystals were pure cubic and showed both photolumi-nescence and photo conductance. Doping was attempted during crystal growth. ZnS and Zn (S,Se) crystals were also grown by I, transport. ZnSe crystals have been grown by most of the common techniques.1"6 Of these, chemical vapor transport as developed by Kaldis2 showed promise of producing high perfection, cubic ZnSe. With chemical transport, crystals can be grown far below the transition temperature for conversion of cubic to hexagonal structure. A small temperature gradient between source and growth region tends to allow near equilibrium growth, which should lead to good crystalline perfection. Because it is necessary to form volatile compounds, halogens or their compounds are extensively used as transport agents. HCl, HBr, and I, were compared as transport agents for growth of ZnSe crystals. Doping during crystal growth was attempted. ZnS and ZnSxSe1-x crystals were also grown by chemical transport. Electrical and optical properties of the crystals were examined. EXPERIMENTAL Fig. 1 is a sketch of the growth apparatus, which was a modification of Kaldis&apos;. A quartz rod which butted against the seed crystal served as a heat sink to promote growth only on the seed. Initially, crystal growth was attempted with ZnSe prepared by wet chemical methods. Because such a material contained oxides and selenates, HC1 reacted with these oxygen compounds to form H2O and no ZnSe transport occurred. Further, this ZnSe contained about 10 ppm Cu plus other impurities. High purity ZnSe, containing small amounts or no oxygen compounds, was prepared by reaction of H2Se with zinc vapors at 600° to 800°C in an atmosphere of palladium diffused H2.7 The ZnSe thus produced was usually copper free and contained only 1 ppm by weight of magnesium as determined by emission spectrographic analysis. G.E.&apos;s electronic grade ZnS, which had about 10 ppm metallic impurities, was used without further treatment. ZnS-ZnSe charges were prepared by mixing the two compounds together, then sintering 24 hr at 1100°C in an H2S ambient. The gases, HBr and HC1, were commercial grade, of 99.9 pct purity, while the I2 was 99.999 pct pure. The single crystal seeds with (111) faces for growth were mechanically held in place by sealing the outer quartz tube to the growth tube. After the charge was introduced, the system was outgassed at l0-5 torr while heated to 500°C. The desired quantities of transport reagents were then sealed off in the system, which had been cooled to 25°C. The growth tubes were inserted into a furnace with the desired temperature and thermal gradient. The system was allowed to cool for 1 to 12 hr from growth temperatures of about 850" to 25°C. The tubes remained stationary during crystal growth. HCl CHEMICAL TRANSPORT GROWTH Preliminary runs with HC1 had a temperature gradient of 100° to 200°C and no seed or heat sink. At very low concentrations, carbon dissolves interstitially in molybdenum resulting in a linear expansion of lattice parameter with increase of carbon in solid solution. Geometrical consideration of the relative size of carbon atom to size of interstice approximately predicts the observed volume expansion. THE element carbon, occurring in molybdenum, either as an unavoidable impurity, or purposely added, markedly affects the mechanical properties of molybdenum. Several investigators1-" have noted the occurrence of molybdenum carbide at the grain boundaries of cast molybdenum, and Fischer and Rengstorff&apos; have shown that this intergranular constituent can induce intergranular brittleness. The appreciable change, with temperature, of the solid solubility of carbon in molybdenum, found by Few and Manning," suggests other important effects upon mechanical properties. Finally the relative atom diameters of carbon and molybdenum (the ratio of atom diameters is 0.59) are indicative, by analogy with iron (ratio of carbon atom diameter to iron atom diameter is 0.65), of a possible interstitial solid solution. If carbon dissolves intersti-tially in molybdenum, anelastic effects and age-hardening effects, similar to those observed in other body-centered cubic metals, could be expected. However, from the work of Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker," it might be inferred that carbon forms only a substitutional solid solution with molybdenum. These considerations made it desirable to study the effect of carbon on the lattice parameter of molybdenum in greater detail than heretofore. All heat treating was done in a high temperature furnace7 built specifically for heat treatment of molybdenum. The temperatures and times of heat treatment were determined from the a solubility limit for the Mo-C system." These heat treatments were carried out in argon which was purified with respect to N, and H.!0." Purification of the argon was accomplished by passing the argon over hot (750°C) titanium and then through a magnesium perchlorate drying tower. As many as six samples were run concurrently and quenched at different times without interrupting the furnace cycle. Both the purity of the furnace atmosphere and ability to quench samples from any temperature up to 4000 °F were of prime importance in the successful heat treatment of samples for the lattice parameter investigation. Carbon Analysis The Leco Combustion apparatus was used for carbon analysis. This apparatus is capable of an accuracy of & 0.003 pct for a 1 g sample in the range below 0.10 pct. However, it is felt the degree of accuracy is somewhat better than this limit in view of the consistency evident by cross checking a number of determinations. The Battelle Analytical Laboratory consistently reported check results to within k 0.001 pct C. X-ray Measurements The molybdenum wire specimens (20 mils) were carefully filed down to about 12 mils and then etched with nitric acid to 8 mils. Carbon analyses were made on specimens before reduction in size; however, since there was no evidence of surface carburization, it is probable that the carbon was uniformly distributed throughout the sample. The resultant specimens were strain free and small enough to minimize the error in the lattice parameter determinations due to X-ray absorption. Diffraction patterns were obtained with a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 114.59 mm in diam utilizing the Straumanis type asymmetrical film mounting. Nickel-filtered copper. Ka radiation and zirconium-filtered molybdenum Ka radiation were used. Line positions on the film were measured with a traveling microscope equipped with a vernier scale permitting measurement to 0.001 cm. The average of five readings was used to determine the position of each line. The lattice parameter for each specimen was determined from the data by the extrapolation method of Bradley and Jay, Y.e., the intercept at 90" of the straight line obtained by plotting the apparent lat-

It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. THE advance made in recent times in this branch of metallurgy is indicated y the attention the subject is receiving from important American copper-producing companies. Reference to the files of publications devoted to the mining industry discloses that some 20 American companies are actively investigating the amenability of their ore, or other material, to leaching methods, and that plants of varying capacities up, to 10,000 tons per day are under construction or are projected. Several leaching works are in commercial operation. It has been frequently pointed out that no method of leaching is universally applicable, for the reason that each ore differs in some particular from apparently similar ore found elsewhere, and also because local conditions are rarely the same even where the ore closely approximates in character that being worked at some other point. For this reason the older companies are approaching the matter in a conservative manner, experimentally determining for themselves the salient features in each instance. In considering a leaching proposition three factors at once fix the attention: (1) disengaging the metal from mineralized forms in Which it is found in nature; (2) recovering the metal in a commercial state after it has been dissolved; (3) the apparatus best adapted to carrying out the several operations.

The Army Reorganization Act, which became effective July 1, 1916, contains a provision authorizing the organization of an Officers&apos; Reserve, in which will be included a Corps of Reserve Engineers. There will also be an Enlisted Reserve of skilled workmen in technical lines. THE telluride of gold and silver, the " Tellurgold-silver" of Hausmann, and " Petzite" of other mineralogists, has been found in so few localities, that a late discovery of the mineral in a new locality may not be uninteresbing. So far this mineral has been found in Europe only in a few mines in Transylvania, and in Hungary; and in the United States in the Stanislaus Mine, in Calaveras County, California, in the Golden Rule Mine, Tuolumne County, California, and in a mine in Montana, the precise locality of which I have forgot, ten. The new locality referred to is at the Red Cloud Mine, Gold Hill District, Boulder County, Colorado.

Sized fractions of Wisconsin Gogebic taconite were reduced with hydrogen over the temperature range from 600° to 1000°C. In general, the degree and rate of reduction increase with temperature. Particle size has no observable effect except in the smaller fractions at 900°C and above, where reduction is impeded, possibly due to the siliceous nature of the ore. Gaseous diffusion appears to be significant as a rate controlling factor at certain stages. THE depletion of high grade iron ore reserves in the United States has established the need to utilize all available iron ore deposits, both in long range planning and from the viewpoint of national emergency. This has led to extensive research and development in this field. The beneficiation of Wisconsin Gogebic taconite ore has been previously studied by investigators at the University of Wiscconsin, 1 the United States Bureau of Mines,, Battelle Memorial Institute, 3 and others. Methods investigated have included concentration by flotation processes, magnetic and gravity separation, magnetic roasting and various combinations of them. The foregoing studies have been concerned with the production of an enriched ore suitable for blast furnace use. If the ore could first be reduced to metallic iron and then beneficiated, the product could be used directly in the open hearth or electric steel-making furnace. The by-passing of the blast furnace should enhance the economic feasibility of the beneficiating process. The work reported here,4 was undertaken to establish data on the hydrogen reduction of Wisconsin taconite that would eventually lead to the development of an economic direct reduction process for this and perhaps other low grade siliceous ores. The volume of work on direct reduction can be judged by the fact that 240 direct reduction processes were patented in the United States alone up to 1951, 5 and numerous additional processes have since been developed. Some of the factors contributing to direct reduction development are: 1) The increasing capital cost of the blast furnace and its accessory equipment. 2) The decreasing availability of high grade domestic ore. 3) The high cost of steel scrap for use in the open hearth and electric furnaces. In general, direct reduction processes can be divided into two types; those using a solid reductant (coal, peat, lignite) usually carried out in a kiln, and those using a gaseous reductant (H2, CO) in a shaft furnace or a fluidized bed retort. As there is no low cost coal readily available in northern Wisconsin but natural gas could be quite easily obtained, it is believed a gaseous reductant process would offer the greater feasibility for use on Wisconsin taconite. It is hoped that this preliminary work will beof interest to other investigators in this increasingly important field. TACONITE ORE The ore used in the investigation was obtained originally from the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and consisted of a representative composite made up from trench samples of the Norrie, Pabst, Plymouth, Pence, and Yale members of the Wisconsin Gogebic range iron formation. Chemically, the ore contains approximately 52 pct SiO, and 30 pct Fe. X-ray diffraction and other studies indicate the principal minerals to be quartz (SiO2), hematite (Fe2O3), and goethite (Fe2O3. H2O). Minor amounts of iron containing silicates, siderite (FecO3), and magnetite (FeO-Fe2O3) are present. The iron minerals and quartz are so finely disseminated that the ore requires grinding to less than 200 mesh (74 µ) for essential liberation.l,2 The iron content of each of the several size fractions studied is shown in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The method used throughout the investigation was based on that developed by the U. S. Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. Precision lattice-constant measurements have been widely used in the study of cubic solid solutions but as yet have been rarely applied to noncubic solid solutions. (See, however, references I and 2.) With the high precision at present attainable in the measurement of lattice constants, the X-ray method should be readily applicable to noncubic solid solutions. In the work reported here, hexagonal close-packed magnesium was used as the solvent and either lead, bismuth or gold as the solute. In the magnesium-lead and magnesium-bismuth systems the a and c lattice constants were determined as a function of composition, densities were calculated from these lattice-constant data, these theoretical densities were compared with those directly measured and the solid solubility limit was determined on quenched specimens over a considerable range of temperature. In the magnesium-gold system, the solid solubility is very small but we have obtained an indirect check on the solubility limit previously reported. Materials and Preparation oF the Alloys The magnesium used was obtained from the Aluminum Company of America and was 99.987 per cent pure. Impurities as reported On the label were: Fe, Al, 0&apos;004 per cent; Si, 0.009 per cent; Zn, trace; Cu, Pb, nil. The bismuth was Merck&apos;s analytical grade, minimum purity 99.95 per cent. Maximum impurities as listed on the label were: Fe, 0.008 per cent; Pb, 0.010 per cent; Ag, 0.010 per cent; Cu, 0.005 per cent; Sn, 0.003 per cent; Sb, 0.00; As, 0.000; S, 0.01 per cent. The gold was purified by double precipitation with sulphur dioxide. The lattice constants of these three metals have been previously reported.3 The lead used was test lead, silver free and with a maximum of 0.10 per cent heavy metal impurities. The lattice constant 01 this lead has been measured and found to be 4.94057 ± 0.00016 at 25°C. The alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the constituent metals in magnesia-lined alundum crucibles under an atmosphere of hydrogen purified by passing over magnesium heated to 500°C. The magnesia lining prevented contamination 01 the alloys with aluminum. Vacuum melting could not be used because of the volatility of magnesium. A high-frequency induction furnace was used for the melting operation and the stirring action of the current resulted in thorough mixing of the constituents. The melts were allowed to freeze in the crucible, the ingots obtained weighed about 10 grams. An extremely thin white film formed on the surface of the melts, sometimes covering only a part of the exposed surface. The effects of mutual interactions between elements on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chrormium, columbium, molybdenurn, nickel, or silicon have been determined. The equilibrium nitrogen solubilities in the liquid iron alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. The second-order effects caused by the presence of chrormium, columbium , or silicon in the melt were found to be significant. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing several alloying elements has also been measured as a function of melt temperature and nitrogen pressure. The heat of solution of nitrogen in microcomponent iron alloys has been found to be a function of the logarithnz of the activity coefficient of nitrogen, irrvespectilje of the composition of the melt. The heat of solution of nitrogen in pure liquid iron was determined to be 1265 ± 450 cal per g-atom of N over the temperatxue range 1600° to 1800°. Sieverts &apos; law was obeyed for all melt compositions studied in the pressure interval 0.4 to 1.0 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron and in many dilute binary liquid-iron alloys has been the subject of many investigations. Pehlke and Elliott&apos; made a comprehensive investigation on this subject in which they summarized and compared previous researches. However, the practical application of these solubility studies requires prediction of the nitrogen solubility in the multicomponent alloys encountered in operating practice. The interaction parameter as defined by wagner2 has been used to predict the behavior of a solute in a complex alloy, and a modification of this approach has met with reasonable success in several instances.&apos;1"5 The necessity for extending the nitrogen solubility data on binary alloys is caused by the lack of direct measurements of the solubility of nitrogen in molten alloy steels. A direct comparison between measured solubilities and those predicted for multicomponent alloys based on data in binary systems has been made in only a few instances, and most of these were reviewed by Langenberg,6 who developed a graphical technique for predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The solubility of nitrogen has also been studied over the entire Fe-Cr-Ni ternary system by Humbert and Elliott.? Both studies compared the solubilities computed from binary iron alloy data with those measured in ternary alloys in the liquid state at 1600°C. Most of the nitrogen solubility measurements referred to above were for iron alloys at 1600°C; thus, the ability to predict nitrogen solubilities in molten iron alloys has been restricted primarily to alloys at 1600°C. Recently, Nelsson8 devised an approximate method for calculating the change in nitrogen solubility in molten iron alloys as a function of temperature, but an assumption of regular solution behavior limits the applicability of the method. Chipman and Corrigan9,10 have developed an empirical correlation. based on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in the iron alloy at 1600°C, which facilitates the estimation of nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. This method also has limitations, due to the necessity of calculating the activity coefficient for nitrogen in a multicomponent iron alloy at 1600°C from the nitrogen solubility data for binary iron alloys. The shortcoming of such a straightforward approach to the problem of predicting nitrogen solubilities is the disregard of mutual interactions between elements in a complex iron melt. This investigation was conducted in an attempt to provide a more reliable method of predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The effects of the mutual interactions between chromium, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, or columbium in iron were studied, using the Sieverts&apos; technique1,7 to measure the effects of alloy composition, temperature, and pressure on the solubility of nitrogen in ternary liquid iron alloys.

A little more than a year and a half ago construction started on Canada&apos;s largest initial milling plant. Today the zinc concentrating plant 7 miles north of Barraute sits on ground that once was forest and clay flats. The plant is part of Barvue Mines Ltd. zinc-silver operation. Employees of the plant live in the model community of Barvue, built like the plant in record time. About 5000 tons of ore are handled by the plant daily, with an output of 200 tons of zinc concentrate. Management hopes to raise capacity of the $8 million plant to 6000 tons.

Dispersion-containing titanium-copper alloys were prepared having mean free paths varying from 1.0 to 9.7 P. Tensile studies at room temperature and at 1000°F showed that little or no strengthening occurred when the mean free path exceeded 3 p. A convolution procedure is described for obtaining an analytical expression for the composition profiles of solute concentration:; in binary solid solutions. The free energy of solutions containing such compositional inhomogeneities can then be evaluated and the stability of spherically symmetric clusters (G.P. zones, for short) us a function of their radii and central compositions can be studied accordingly. Two characteristic zone radii are defined: the minimum radius (RM) corresponding to the smallest zone for which growth is energetically favored over dissolution, and the critical radius RK) corresponding to zones associated with the minimum work of formation. The values of RM and RK coincide at the two classical limits of nucleation and growth and spinodal decomposition. As the spinodal is approached, however, RM and RK diverge increasingly and it is proposed that the initial] decomposition morphology is governed more closely by the minimum, rather than by the critical radius since the former possesses no singularity within the m eta stable phase boundary. Reversion is briefly discussed in the light of the foregoing and it is shown that a set of reversion temperatures located between the coherent miscibility gap and the coherent spinodal must correspond to a given distribution of low temperature zones. SINCE the early works of Guinier1 and preston,2 the kinetics and morphology of GP zones have been studied extensively, see Ref. 3, for example, for a recent review. Nevertheless, a completely satisfying theoretical treatment of the decomposition of meta-stable or unstable binary solid solutions is still lacking due to the almost unsurmountable mathematical difficulties that one encounters in attempting to solve the pertinent diffusion equation which, in principle, describes the whole process. This equation, first derived by Cahn for the initial stages of spinodal decomposition,4 is a nonlinear partial differential equation of the fourth order in anisotropic space, a general analytical solution of which is completely out of the question. From this equation, some prediction can be made, however, concerning the later stages of spinodal decomposition5 and a recent numerical solution6 of the equation in the case of one- and two-dimensional composition modulations of a solid solution inside the spinodal has led to the following considerations: the sinusoidal morphology7 is to be expected only for solutions of average composition c, located near the center of the coherent miscibility gap.8 For solutions with co closer to the spinodal decomposition, depleted shell zones9 should constitute the first recognizable decomposition product, later evolving to iso- lated, enriched preprecipitates in a uniformly depleted matrix as this must, in all cases, constitute the final metastable morphology, barring, of course, loss of coherency and change in crystal structure. In agreement with the qualitative description of Bonfiglioli and Guinier,l0 it thus appears that the various models discussed by previous authors are, in fact, idealized successive stages of the general decomposition process. Unfortunately, corresponding calculations for a solid solution outside the spinodal are not yet available because of two additional difficulties: it is essential that the diffusion equation be solved in three-dimensional space, and furthermore, one must include in the equation an appropriate "source term" describing the statistics of the creation of composition fluctuations required to trigger the nucleation events. At present, a general treatment of this problem does not appear to be tractable. Nevertheless, by using a modelistic approach, i.e., by selecting a priori certain composition variation profiles and by evaluating their associated free energies, one can draw certain conclusions relative to the stability of these isolated composition modulations or "zones", both outside and inside the spinodal. This is the object of the present investigation. THEORY We shall now describe a standard four-parameter spherically symmetric GP zone, evaluate its free energy according to the Cahn and Hilliard11 formula (Eq. [5], below), and plot the corresponding energy surfaces as a function of zone amplitude and radius as

The growth of grain boundary films and Widmanstiitten plates of proeutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels ulas considered quantitatively in three plain carbon steels and one "pure" iron-carbon alloy. Growth was found to take place at a slower rate than would be predicted on the basis of a model invoking rate control by long range diffusion of carbon. The films in the pure alloy grew faster than those in the plain carbon steels. A possible explanation is suggested. In 1904, Nernsst&apos; and Brunner2 postulated that ionic crystals growing in supersaturated aqueous solutions grew at rates determined by diffusion through the solution to the growing crystal interface. The gradient down which the diffusion took place was assumed to be fixed by the supersaturated bulk solution concentration, the concentration dt the crystal surface and some arbitrary distance. The flux of material to the crystal was described as Flux where D is the diffusion coefficient, A the crystal surface area, Ci the bulk solution concentration, Co the saturated solution concentration, and 6 the thickness of the diffusion zone. It is obvious that the expression is an adaptation of F+ick&apos;s3 first law of diffusion (steady state). This was the initial formulation of what will be defined here as "diffusion controlled growth," i.e., growth limited by the long range diffusion of a component either to or from the advancing interface assuming both phases at the interface to be in equilibrium. This idea of equilibrium interface concentration implies an infinite reaction rate at the interface. Volmer, Zener,&apos; and 11schner6 have derived expressions for the diffusion controlled growth of spherical precipitates in metallic systems. These analyses agree that the growth in a given direction should be parabolic with time. Brown and Hawkes7 observed that graphite, formed both from the decomposition of cementite and from the decomposition of eutectoid austenite in cast irons, grew according to a parabolic relationship and, therefore, concluded that the laws of diffusion controlled growth, as defined above, were obeyed. They, among others, failed to consider, however, that parabolic growth is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for diffusion controlled growth. Mehl and Dube"&apos; have pointed out that equilibrium may not be realized because the concentration at the interface cannot change instantaneously from that of the bulk to the saturation value. Furthermore, they propose that an equilibrium solute concentration in the parent phase adjacent to the precipitate would remove the thermodynamic activity gradient across the interface and, thus, stop the growth process. Frisch" has also emphasized the importance of interface concentrations that vary throughout the growth of a new phase. The variation in activity across an interface, as discussed by Onol&apos; and Cahn and Hilliard,12 is of fundamental importance to this question. Ham13 considered the data of Turnbull14 on the growth of barium sulfate in aqueous solutions. He concluded that the data could be analyzed in terms of a radiation-type boundary condition. Flux across interface = K (c, - C,) [21 where C, is the concentration in the solution at the interface, Co the saturated solution concentration, and K the proportionality constant. The edgewise growth of Widmanstlitten plates, frequently referred to as the rate of lengthening, was first considered by Zener.&apos;&apos; Basing a mathematical analysis on steady-state (constant velocity) growth he concluded that where G is the growth rate, D the solute diffusivity, Ci the concentration in the bulk, Co the equilibrium interface concentration, C, the concentration in the precipitate, a a constant, Y the radius of curvature of the edge of the plate, and rC the critical radius, i.e., the radius which would increase the activity of solute at the interface at equilibrium under the influence of capillarity to that of the bulk. IN view of the great interest shown in the oil possibilities of Kentucky, one is impressed with the paucity of reliable literature on the oil fields of the state. A few brief reports by the Federal and State Geological Surveys are about the only reliable data available. When the estimated production figures, for 1918, are published by the U. S. Geological Survey, they will show a revival of the oil industry in the Blue Grass State during the past half decade. There will also be an increase in the production for 1919 and 1920, at least. Although as an oil-producing state Kentucky is small, compared with sonic of the other oil states, the present production and the area of undrilled proved territory is large enough to classify it as one of the important oil states of the Union. This paper will be confined to the Irvine District and the immediately adjoining areas which have been prospected with varying success. The Corniferous limestone or Irvine sand is the oil-producing formation in the area discussed.
